Walking in at first glance, you are immediately transported into a fun environment. The whimsical decor, the energy, and the dramatic artwork streamed along the walls of Gentle Star are truly to be admired. You'd think you might've taken a turn into a fun art gallery, much less a medical skin based practice. Nonetheless, extremely lovely and always a pleasant surprise. Craig decorates the reception area each holiday! Approaching the front desk, I am always kindly welcomed by Cassandra and offered a glass of water and a seat on one of their comfy chairs.

Now on to the reason why this visit has become an addictive monthly ritual: da da da daaaaaah! Holly Anne! You'll be quick to notice her warm, sweet, and down to Earth demeanor, but don't let her friendly, ultra feminine ways fool you. Holly can turn a pore inside out and sideways like a Harlem globetrotter does to a basketball. Yes, all with intense skill, ease, and poise. Minus the red, white, and blue head and wrist bands, of course. With all the tricks and talent Holly has, I sometimes have to hold back from whistling that darn catchy tune of the Harlem Globetrotter's theme song while she tugs away at my skin. I mean, have you seen those guys on the court? They're totally consistent. Just like Holly! Oh gosh do I digress...

The nitty gritty: With acne prone skin, I always worry whether a specific treatment will leave me broken out and broken hearted. With Holly, I never have to worry about any of the products used or the methods taken. She is extremely gifted and sustains a world of knowledge concerning skin health and care maintenance. The microderms are a must; they're completely pain-free.

I think anyone who wants top of the line skin care from a results driven practice, they should definitely come into Gentle Star.

The complimentary chocolate after your appointment is a very nice touch too, might I add.

I came to Gentle Star because an important criteria for me was a place that understood ethnic skin. Craig in particular, who is Asian, was recommended to me by a friend on that basis. The issues I wanted to address were 1) age spots (argh!)  2) acne 3) evening out my skin tone and 4) in general, just learning how to better take care of my skin.

At the first appointment, Craig spent nearly an hour with me, telling me about his personal journey of overcoming damaged skin, and answering my many questions. He recommended the Jan Marini line for me, but did not pressure me to buy it. But I was ready for some results, so I forked over $323 for the Jan Marini Skin Care Management System MD kit, which had 7 products in it. Craig said it would last about 6 months.

I came in at 3 weeks for a foliow up and Craig enthusiastically told me that, wow, I looked great! While that was nice of him, I didn't buy it, because to me, I looked pretty much the same.

At the two month mark, I came back in for another appointment. Craig told me that my skin looked good, that this was about as good as it was going to get, and that I should stock up on some product. I asked, isn't the kit supposed to last 6 months? He gave me an oh-did-I-say-that? look, and said it could last that long IF I used the product sparingly.

Overall, I found the customer service to be OK, but I wasn't wowed by it. Craig always mentioned product to me, but he wasn't pushy about it. As to the results, they are just OK as well. My skin did improve, but in subtle ways. I honestly can't tell if my age spots are any lighter, but the acne and corresponding bumpy skin did clear up. And there are some improvements to skin tone as well. However, it's so subtle that only I seem to notice it. None of my friends or family noticed at all.

Was I unrealistically hoping for a miracle? Well yes, a girl can dream, can't she? But I think my goal of having totally smooth and unblemished skin like Supervisor Jane Kim is probably not attainable.

Wish I could give this place 5 stars because their customer service really is fantastic

Because of the rave reviews about their facials, I drove from San Jose and paid the $200+ for their facials. Unfortunately I was left with continuous marks each and every time.

    First time - dumb luck

    Second time - coincidence

    Third time  - pattern

Couldn't bring myself to go a fourth time with the bruises and marks that would take weeks to clear up. I've never tried any of GS's other services. Maybe they're better?

I have been coming to this place for more than 2 years so it has been about time to write a review. I had a lot of outbreaks on my face, so Craig started with extractions and that helped my face a lot. Since Craig is frequently fully booked weeks in advance, I switched to Holly and received the same amazing service. She suggested  salicylic acid peels and that saved my skin. No more painful cysts and no more outbreaks. I have never been pushed to buy products, but everything they suggested worked great for my skin.

I have endless amounts of compliments for Craig, he is such a wonderful person!  He really knows what he is talking about and has completely transformed my skin (which had been an ongoing issue for years).  The services provided here are worth the money, and the staff is welcoming and kind.  I feel very comfortable here and always look forward to my monthly visits.  I have been to countless spas, nothing compares to the professionalism and results provided by Gentle Star.

Craig is more than a facialist: he is a life Guru.

For Realz yo. Mofo CHANGED my skin - brilliant shining gushing perfection. Ok not gushing, but like, from the inside, right? Like, how I feel after my skin is perfected by his angelic and strong determined grip.

Ok Ok so it's pain. And it's all in vain. And it's worth it for the moment, like all things in this very here life.

Got a lot of advice, super useful - so many ways. Glowing, better skin.

(dermatologists since I was like, 11, no one could help...they made me sicker....accutane up the wazoo) and Craig says: Dermatologists do Disease, we do Beauty.

Well said, well said. So it is.

I'm beautiful now! Pay no attention to the donut in the picture.

DO NOT GO HERE FOR LASER.  I went here for Laser Genesis and I was told it would be a no down time procedure.  I had had IPL at another med spa before and I knew that meant you looked fine afterwards and could go about your business.  I was surprised after the procedure to see I was disfigured with huge purple lesions.  They did their complimentary makeup but no amount of makeup could cover these.  The doctor told me they would go away in 4 days.  In 5 days they were still there and I had to buy heavy cover up just so I could go to work.

I figured it would all be worth it once the lesions faded.  But much to my shock as they faded they were replaced with pitted scars like acne scars.  I know about these kind of scars they are permanent.

I think the reason this place has all these great reviews is because of the facials and the botox.  You will notice there are no great reviews for laser.  Do do not go here for laser!  They do not know what they are doing and you may end up looking worse then when you started.  I really regret going to this place.  It's hard to write a review like this but I hope I can save some one from making the same mistake.

Oh, Gentle Star!  That I could yelp you all the stars in the sky, I would.

Dr. Ellis is the one of most talented aesthetic physicians I have met, bar none.  I was immediately touched by his warm, gentle nature (and as I'm writing this, I realize that I've used both "gentle" and "star" in the first three lines; hmmm).

Now, let me recount the experience:

As I rolled up onto Jessie St, I couldn't help but notice the crackheads loading up on the corner, but hey, it's all part of the SF charm.  I was undeterred, as I knew that Mint Plaza, bedecked with such jewels as Chez Papa Resto, 54 Mint, and Thermidor, was a diamond in the rough.  Er, surrounded by the rough.

I wasn't sure what to expect, as I buzzed into the building, and strolled through the corridor.  There at the end, behind the most unassuming of doors, resided Gentle Star.  Which should be nicknamed "Shining Star", as it beamed the second I opened the door.

I loved the urban chic - exposed brick, juxtaposed by brushed chrome, softened by supple leather.

I was warmly welcomed by Cassandra, and if Gentle Star could make my skin as flawless and creamy as hers, I would cry.   I eyed a beckoning box of artisan chocolates, and pondered a cayenne chili pepper varietal.

"That's my favorite!  Try it!", assured Cassandra.

"Helllllo!!!", sang the cheeriest of voices from the hallway,"I'm Thomas Ellis!  Come on in - let's take a look at you!"

He led me into the office, which felt nothing like the sanitized hospital rooms of my experience.  Again, exposed brick through and through.  In the corner, the sweetest of all touches, sat a teddy bear in a wooden chair.

"He's there for you to hug, if you get scared."

Now, I would LOOVE to reveal the experience of my, um, procedure.  But, um, I really don't want to violate my HIPAA rights.  Yeah, that's it.

"Oh, wow.  You DO look good!  Take a look!".  Indeed, I didn't just look good; I looked great.  Now, I was really gonna cry.

"OK, let's give it 10 days, and follow up to make sure everything's the way you want it."  I was pleasantly surprised at how responsible he was - of the 5 aesthetic practitioners whom I had visited, none had taken the care to see me back post-procedure.  That spoke volumes.

Words cannot express how impressed I was. Put it simply like this:  I walked in 33, and out 28.  Seriously.  The last guy I dated said I looked 12.  I think he meant it.  Yeah.  And the best part:  not a single scar, prick, or bruise to let the world know I had just had a, um...facial.

To top it all off, I opened my mailbox several days later, bracing myself for a barrage of bills, forms, and annoying Bed Bath & Beyond coupons.  Among them, shone one shining star.  I mean, gentle star.  On artfully torn paper, adorned with a single rhinestone upon a (you guessed it!) gentle star, was a hand-written thank you note.

I smiled at the thoughtful gesture.  And as I glanced at the mirror to the right of me, I said to my reflection, "Damn girl, you DO look good..."

Dr. Ellis and his staff are amazing. I can't recommend them enough. They were able to eliminate my exclamation point and not look "mean" any time I'm putting any thought into something.  I had zero bruising or bleeding whatsoever.  Dr. Ellis is very conscious about what he's doing, and does it right.

    Hello, Gentle Star! Swanky much?!

Located just blocks from Union Square, Gentle Star's loft-style space & exposed brick is a city-dwellers dream spa. So modern & fresh.

Nikko, who controls the front desk & the front of the house, could not be nicer. Same goes for my esthetician, Holly. The staff made us feel comfy-cozy.

My only complaint about my microdermabrasion appointment is that Holly spent very little time doing the actual microdermabrasion. Of my 45 minute session, less than 10 minutes was dedicated to re-surfacing my skin, which is what we paid for. It felt more like a facial, minus extractions. The rest of the time, my face was being steamed, cleaned, moisturized, etc.

Gentle Star really is super gentle on your skin, maybe a little too gentle. I like it a little more rough & aggressive, but this is a great place for microdermabrasion virgins. P.S. If you've never had your face re-surfaced, it feels like a cat's sandpapery tongue is repeatedly licking
you. My skin felt silky-smooth for a week after treatment.

Okay, so I have to admit. I can't really compare Gentle Star to any other place that do facials, because frankly, I've never *had* a facial at any other place. But I will say this: Gentle Star is amazing.

I had Holly do mine. I've had two so far, and both times I had a really fantastic experience. She made sure I was comfortable and she kept me informed of what she was doing as she was doing it. She also was super friendly and made great conversation that didn't seem forced (not enough interest) or nosy (too much interest).

I also liked how friendly the two different front desk receptionist people were that I had to deal with. The office itself is fun and modern with a flair to the style that is really interesting. And the place is in a great location.

And as for my skin? I've had several people tell me that I look healthier and that my skin looks great. :)

Gentle Star Medspa what can I say besides thanks to Dr. Ellis I am a very happy woman.  He has reversed my aging process and improved my appearance by at least ten years. I also had some really bad scars that have been plumped and smoothed away. All without any surgery.

After reaching a certain age I think that it is therapeutic to hear 'you look so great, you haven't aged a bit' then they always want to know my secret, if I like them a lot I share it.  Dr. Tom Ellis and Gentle Star Medspa

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kelly. She is so professional and kind hearted. She's patient, understanding, and really knows the right questions to ask as well as knowledgeable and honest which really puts you at ease. She asks all the right questions, does not pressure you to get unnecessary procedures which you might expect when going in for a cosmetic procedure. Super plus, everyone else that I delt with during my visit was very kind a professional. Will definitely be back!! YAY!

It's been two years since my last facial. I was trying to be good and get my finances in order since the economy isn't that great.  However, my skin was looking dull and I had too many clogged pores for comfort.  After a recently bad break out (I'm 27, I shouldn't have pimples!) I broke down and made an appointment.

The last time I went for a facial it was at Gentle Star, so I decided to go back.  I was surprised and elated to find out that Holly was still working there.  She's gives great facials.  I had a deep cleaning facial with microdermabrasion and my skin looks and feels so much better. She also gives great skin care advice (she explained, in detail, how to properly use my clarisonic).

I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a facial that actually improves your skin.  There are great day spas in SF, but none made my skin look and feel as good.  I'll trade in a neck massage for a better facial any day.

Bonus:  Blue Bottle Coffee is a couple doors down from Gentle Star.

I've visited twice now and I can't say nothing but great things about Gentle Star!

If you're looking for a place where you will get honest answers from a professional this is absolutely it. Exclusive yes and I love that they keep it this way, why would you want to walk in to a spa filled with wondering eyes or people ruining the atmosphere?

I recently called in to make an appointment and I was able to book something in 2/3 weeks... I got a call a day prior to my visit as a reminder which is great customer service. And on my visit I did both Botox and Juviderm which was recommended by Dr Tom.
He explained what would happen after my visit to expect a bit of swelling and in a few days I would be okay.
There was no swelling on my case, my face looks great and I keep getting compliments about my skin!!

Certainly going back when I'm due and I'll gladly recommend this place to anyone!

I had a facial and microdermal abrasion with Holly. I hadn't had a facial in...oh years (sad grad student salary) and my skin was looking dull, rough and very prone to redness/breakouts. I was ready to go the whole hog: (extractions, photofacial, peels), but Holly convinced me to start small and she was right! Usually places love expensive procedures and try to push as much of that as they can, but Holly told me that I didn't need such a drastic step.

The microdermal abrasion lasted for about fifteen minutes (which, bw, is the correct time for this procedure, you don't want to irritate the skin! more is not necessarily better from what I understand) then steam and extractions. There's no way extractions will ever be ... a walk in the park...but there are people who have a light touch and Holly is one of them. Don't get me wrong--she really gets your skin clean, but she also works in a way that doesn't overly irritate your skin. If she sees you're in discomfort she'll stop, or she'll move to a new area to let you rest for a bit. And she's great to talk to! Time--well it doesn't fly exactly while you're getting all the icky stuff dug out of your pores--but it does pass relatively quickly! The extractions were followed by a nice mask and a GREAT facial massage. Holly then recommended a few products that I have yet to use, but weren't too expensive and encouraged me to keep in touch. If you don't like the products you can return them within 30 days.

Just a really great, non intimidating place where they work on making you feel comfortable. Great location, great people, totally worth the money.

Ladies and Gentlemen!  Have I got GREAT NEWS!

    Are your

    - jowls touching your knees?
    - wrinkles turning your face into the Grand Canyon as seen through Google Earth?
    - zits smoking like Pompeii before the conflagration?
    - expression lines written on your face with a broad-nibbed Sharpie pen?
    - eye bags looking a little "Hefty"?
    - skin cells acting like a petulant lover who refuses to "turn over"?

WELL I HAVE THE PLACE FOR YOU!

At Gentle Star, there's no hard sell, no lotions which smell like roses yet do fuck all for your skin, no bitchy facialists who took their beauty classes at Torquemada U.

Here, there is only meditation on the Platonic Ideal of Perfect Skin.  These guys know their shit -- from Nico, the warm and welcoming front desk manager, to aesthetician and uber facialist Craig Shishido, to Master of the Botox Needle Thomas Ellis, M.D..

And yes, I like facials from time to time....Oh, go fuck yourselves.  I'm gay, what do you expect?  Plus, I'm from Hawai'i -- where we chain smoke Kools on the beach WITHOUT SUNSCREEN -- and have suffered from acne all through my miserable, pockmarked life.

AND I SEE YOU QUEENS APPLYING CREME DE LA MER AND STARING AT YOUR FUCKING PORES IN THE MIRROR FOR AN HOUR  -- WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU BITCHES TO JUDGE ME?  I'M MORE MAN THAN YOU WILL EVER BE!

I'm so glad I found Gentle Star, thanks to the nearly unanimous five-star rating here on yelp.

An air of professionalism infuses this clinic.  Can I just say: what a fucking relief!  I'm so sick of walking into "spas" only to leave poorer and smelling like a motherfucking tuberose.  I mean, if I wanted to smell like that, I'd douse myself in Marc Jacobs perfume for women AND SET MYSELF ON FIRE.

I've only met with Nico and Craig.  Both are consummate professionals who take great care of their clients.  Nico judiciously checks in with you both before and after your appointment in order to insure that your face hasn't melted off or anything.  Craig has a great "bedside" manner when conducting the dreaded "extractions."  He explains the numerous facial procedures available to you, and is truly interested in your individual concerns.

Plus, they both have great complexions.  Do you really want to be worked on by someone who looks like they were rode hard and put away wet?  I thought not.  An intial consultation is free (yes, FREE, asshat).  Check them out.

But if any of my appointments are cancelled because of overbooking, I'm so gonna get Medieval on your asses.  Because, you know, I'm all man.

I came in here for a treatment on my lunch hour and I thought it was great.  Reasonable prices, a good menu of services and a really great staff.  The staff especially stood out - everyone I dealt with was incredibly professional - which at a spa you should be able to take for granted, but many places you cannot.  They also ran exactly on time, which is also rare in the medical and salon industries, and which I really appreciate since my work schedule is demanding.

The space is pretty cool, and the location is easy - near 5th and Mission, and the Powell St. MUNI.  I look forward to coming back again.

Gentle Star deserves the rave reviews.

They are exceptional, professional, caring, and patient.

They don't push products at you, but they know their stuff and carry only the best products. Everything ranging from the professional version of the Clarisonic, to antioxidant - non pore clogging sunscreen, to natural based self tanner.

I've now been here for a facial and a makeup consultation - both were with Holly, and both were outstanding.

Like the rest of the staff here, Holly has glowing luminous skin, which is a direct result of her lovely demeanor and Gentle Star's well researched skin care practices.

Gentle Spa practices more clinical facials than most spas, so the results are more visible, and I like to think longer lasting. They aren't just there to give you a pat-down massage lotion facial, but will make sure you get real results and ultimately the results you want.

They're open to any and all questions and requests, so when I came in here for a facial, before an event, Holly assured me that my face wouldn't be red at the end of the procedure, but would instead -  look refreshed and clear. She recommended a low dose of microdermabrasion. I was reluctant at first, since I've heard mixed things about microdermabrasion, but the tool they use is so gentle that it ended up being the perfect choice for my skin. Their microdermabrasion tool is new. It's a suction tube with small crystals on the end of it. It sloughs away old skin gently without pain, and any scary results. I had a wowing glow at the end.

I went out to the event without makeup and feeling wonderful.

Today I stopped by for their makeup consultation. Gentle Star uses Glo Mineral makeup, which has won prestigious awards for being the best mineral makeup on the market. Holly applied the makeup with ease, explaining each step, and letting me know the benefits of each product. As a skilled Esthetician and makeup artist, she did an excellent job. I've already received a number of compliments, and I don't even feel like I'm wearing makeup - it's so light.

A previous review pointed out that if Gentle Star was in New York it would be booked solid. It's true. The staff are one of a kind. Though Gentle Star is not cheap - your skin is guaranteed to glow here.

Gentle Star is already busy as is, so book your appointment soon. Word traditionally spreads fast about amazing spots like this, but the radiant face canvasses on those spreading the word, are only further testimonials of their gentle and effective touch.

I know it seems impossible to be true, but Gentle Star is truly worth it's flawless 5 star rating from all of its satisfied clients.  I first found out about this place when I searched "botox" on Yelp.  I was so impressed by the reviews I thought I had to try this place myself.

I called and left a message on a Thursday.  Someone named Craig, who I later found out was one of the owners, called me back within 30 minutes.  I talked to him about what I was looking for (getting older, noticing fine lines, feeling like I can't look like this at 31) and he said I could come in for a free consultation.  Added to this was a last minute cancellation for that Saturday at 2pm. Did I want the appointment Craig asked?  Umm, HELL YES!

Okay, so fast forward to Saturday. It's a dreary San Francisco afternoon and I am hauling ass through the rain to get to my consult. When I arrive I am greeted by the super nice and handsome Nikko. He escorts me into a super chic little exam/treatment room (after offering me some tea, of course). Dr. Ellis arrives at exactly 2pm for our consult.  He gives me a mirror, had me make a bunch of expressions so he could see how my muscles were working and talked me through some possibilities.  He was friendly, very informative, and relaxing to be around.  We decided on a course of treatment that he told me I could start today or make an appointment to do another time.  I came prepared and said I would do the botox treatment today. Dr. Ellis took some "before" pictures, then we were ready to start.

Getting botox done is fairly painless (and this is coming from someone whose threshold for pain is like -2 on a scale of 1-10).  In a nutshell, this is how it works - 1) you figure out the treatment areas, 2) the doctor applies a topical numbing agent, 3) Dr. Ellis followed this with an ice cube for an added numbing effect, 4) the doctor tells you to furrow your brow or raise your eyebrow so they can get the perfect position to insert the needle, 5) the doctor takes a small amount of skin and lightly pinches it together as they put the needle in the skin.  The injection takes about 5-10 seconds and leaves a little raised area on the skin and no blood (the raised area goes down in about an hour).  That's it.

After my treatment Nikko and Dr. Ellis helped me get some complimentary make-up on my forehead to minimize the appearance of the raised, treated areas.  I felt fine, and looked normal. Then I scheduled a follow-up appointment in 2 weeks so Dr. Ellis can evaluate the results and tweak anything if necessary.

It takes about 7-10 days for the best results from botox. I will update this review when that time hits and discuss the results.

I appreciated the fun, warm staff at Gentle Star as well as the informative way Dr. Ellis helped me make decisions without being overly pushy. The whole philosophy at Gentle Star is turning up the looks you already have without looking overly processed.  Like ALL the others before me, I had a great experience!

PS - their prices are VERY reasonable for the attentive, thorough service you receive.

UPDATE:  It has now been 8 days since my botox treatment with Dr. Ellis.  My eyebrows have been raised and arched ever so slightly, I have less visible fine lines, and the "furrowed brow" between my eyes is noticeably less prominent. No one, besides my attentive husband, have asked if I have been "done" in anyway. I think this is great because the goal of doing this was not to alter my face radically, but rather to touch it up a little and try to prevent further aging signs. I have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Ellis next week to see what he thinks.  I am VERY pleased with my results and plan on making these treatments part of my beauty routine.

I may actually be in love with Craig.
I had a facial & microdermabrasion combo today and it was FUN!
Craig who is talented and highly educated in his field is also very hardcore, this is the real deal facial.
Cutting edge technology and a really skilled and talented person taking care of your skin, this is exactly what I was looking for.
My face feels and looks great. I am really excited about continuing not only so that I can continue looking great but because it was such an easy and positive experience. The music is wonderful, and the conversation was informative and enjoyable. Craig is so smart just talking to him made me feel like my IQ was going up.
I want it all, the skin care line, fillers, facials,...
I am impressed with his passion for his work and for creating such a lovely business.

I started going to Gentle Star last October when I had a viciously bad breakout from some products (kinerase)  I'd been using. I started with a deep cleansing facial from Holly, which was excellent. My pores were clogged beyond belief, so it took a lot of time to get them all cleaned out, but Holly was patient and methodical and chatty enough that the time passed easily. There was no extra charge for the extra time, even though it took close to 2 hours.

I went back a week later to start the Obagi regimen. I wasn't sure that I could commit to the twice daily routine for the 18 week cycle, but here I am, nearing the end of the cycle, and my skin looks better than it has in years! Craig has been an excellent coach through the whole process, and has had many follow-up consultations with me, all free of charge. The follow-ups have been great for reassurance and also for slight readjustments in the regimen. Craig is also wonderful about LISTENING to what my concerns are and adjusting accordingly.

It's always great to walk into Gentle Star and be greeted by Nikko like a family member.  I think it's impossible not to like him.  :-)

If you're looking for some serious skin care with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, this is your place!

One quick update -  it's been about 6 months now, and I have new skin! The transformation is really unbelievable! I highly recommend getting the Clarisonic - yes it's pricey but justify it by saying you'd spend that much in clothes or a weekend trip or a facial, for that matter. It's worth forgoing any of those treats for this one that will make you look better, every day.

I wish I could show you all before/after pictures of my skin because you truly have to see it to believe it. And for the first time since high school - I don't wear makeup anymore!

I had drama buying makeup, but Craig was on my review stat and went above and beyond in the customer service department.  Glo is an amazing product and Gentle Star is the only place in the city that carries it.

I ended up going in for a microderm and makeup session with Holly and she was great.  Professional, easy to talk to and great skills.

Bonus points for Gentle Star playing great music, and not the same boring music that every other spa in the city plays.

I recently went into Gentle Star Medspa for an initial facial consultation with one of the co-founders Craig. Upon entering the spa, it was Craig that welcomed me in the reception area. Immediately I was drawn into his very calming demeanor and great customer service focus. Nikko in reception is also helpful when making my appointment over the phone.

Lately with the weather changing, I have noticed my skin to be both dry and with acne in my facial T-zone (forehead, nose and chin). I suspected the over-the-counter products I was using were not helpful. So I decided to see an esthetician to evaluate my face and set up a daily plan for healthier skin.

I had a facial with extractions. It turns out that the products I was using had caused a pH imbalance causing more acne. Also the products were not properly exfoliating the dry skin even with moisturizing. At the start of the facial, a microdermabrasion tool was used which exfoliated the dry skin and dead skin cells for a smoother feel. I also noticed that the medicines and creams used in the facial did not create a burning sensation on my face.  Some of the products have salicylic acid, but it was much gentler than what I was currently using.

At the end, Craig had recommended some products for daily use.  Not only were his recommendations based on my skin type, but also my lifestyle in how I take care of my face.  The lifestyle factor is important in determining successful long-term use of the products.  Walking out, my skin was glowing and it was the smoothest it has been in a very long time.

It has been a couple of weeks since my visit.  I got a thank you card from them in today's mail - how nice!  I am truly in love with my skin products and have scheduled my next facial which is 3 months out.  I highly recommend Craig, Nikko and the staff at Gentle Star Medspa for specialized facial care.  They are the best in the business!

Holly is truly the most thoughtful aesthetician I have ever had. She quickly figured out that I love food and talking about it, so during the extractions (ouch!) she kept me engrossed in conversation about delicious things to eat. Great way to keep me from clawing my own eyes out.

I have such sensitive skin that I broke out all over after the facial, but after a few days, it all went away and I had much glowier skin.

I've only had one deep facial + microdermabrasion so far, but I will be back! When I have mo' money that is. This place will cost you a pretty penny (or 10,000s of them).

Winter always does a number on my skin. I'm dry and flaky, I break out, it is NOT pretty. Lucky for me, I decided to fork over some money to have professionals take care of it. Thanks to Yelp reviews I chose Gentle Star and I was not disappointed.

This place just exudes relaxation when you first walk in. Holly did a deep pore extraction facial for me and although it often hurts like crazy (take aspirin before!), she is as gentle as can be and very pleasant to be around, considering the fact that she's inches from your face. She recommended some great cleansing products (Jan Marini ?) and some acne cream. I also got lots of free samples when I left.

Most importantly, I saw huge results. My skin is completely clear and healthy. And Holly even called to check in a few weeks later to see how I was doing. If you need someone to cure your skin problems, this is the place to go!

I started going to this spa when they first opened to alleviate some of the signs of scarring using Laser Genesis.

From the minute you walk in and engage with the receptionist, to the minute you walk away from your esthatician after your service - the staff and customer service is unbeatable. They really go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and informed about the services you're going in for.

The spa itself is swanky, with an interesting loft style interior design. It's decor is set apart from the usual stark white minimalism you get in spas.

The products they have to offer are all top of the line, with lots of choices + samples.

I'm knocking off one point because my treatment didn't work and it cost a boat load. The prices are very steep, so make sure that what you're going in for will work on your condition before you jump into the investment.

A great experience.  I had several questions about the procedure, and Dr. Ellis took quite a bit of time with me and discussed my overall health.

We went ahead with the procedure, and the deep lines around the bridge of my nose and between my brows are gone.

I'm not going to tell you what I had done, but I think you might guess!

The staff is terrific, and Nikko and Cassandra are two of the nicest - and most gorgeous - people I have ever met.

Looking forward to going back for my check-up!

I'm not just the president, I'm also a client!

Okay. So I'm not the PRESIDENT of Gentle Star... I'm the acupuncturist. Whatever. I'm also a client. And I was a client before whole acupuncture thing. So isn't it about time I reviewed Gentle Star. You bet'cha it is, betch!

Gentle Star is the kind of place where once you walk through the doors you're transported to a place of peace. A place of beauty. No need for scowl lines here. No frowning necessary. Pretty little crystals twinkle and sparkle like the heavens. You're offered a cup of tea by the cute boy at the front desk. He smiles and you know that you have arrived...

...and with a very minimal wait, you are shown to a treatment room.

Then fast forward as you realize, while reclining in the fabulous Italian spa chair, you wonder if the fabulous Craig can tell that you're not just a little nervous? That you're sweating bullets over here? Okay, so not really, but there's that anticipation of the unknown...

Hmm. Doesn't seem to notice. His soothing, non-judgmental voice as he inspects your neglected skin doesn't let on at all. ((sigh)) Your poor, tanned-with-olive-oil-as-a-teenager (which was decades ago) skin is the reason why you've chosen this path of the unknown microderma-magic! And you know that you're ready!

Then you hear it. The the diamond-tipped tool. It sounds like a dental drill (oohhh! bad association), but it's NOT!  It's the sound of beauty.  Craig warns (in his low, zen-like voice) that this might be a little "uncomfortable".  Ohhh....

Then wait for it... Wait for it...

    Contact!
You feel it spinning and sucking your skin. Spinning and sucking away dead skin. Spinning and sucking. Not so bad. Spinning and sucking. Feels pretty good, actually. Spinning and sucking around your nose...

"Let me know if it's too intense and I can turn it down," says Craig in his gentle zen voice.

"Feel free to turn it up," you hear yourself say.  He does. It feels... GOOD. I mean, GOOD! Like, massage good. A diamond-studded massage. Gorgeous diamonds buffing away unseemly sun spots. Gorgeous diamonds refining the little forehead lines. Gorgeous diamonds revealing gorgeous new skin!

Then it's over.  Wait. That's it?
But wait. I need more sucking and spinning, you think. I need more gorgeous diamond-abrasion!

But no. Craig's a professional, and when he says it's done, it's done. I mean, you've been in the fabulous Italian chair for a good while. And, more imporantly, you trust him. Craig and his soothing zen-voice. You trust him because he knows his skin!

The end result from this one treatment? Skin a little plumper. A lot brighter. Incredibly baby-behind smoother! Gorgeous!

You want to hug him! Hug him for smoother skin. Hug him for knowing his stuff!

Next time, you think,  (waving a little "ciao" to the cute front desk guy) I'm having him crank that diamond-studded microderma-thing up to 11.  And that's when you know that you're hooked.

    ****
    UPDATE: 4/5

just wanted to add that the cute front desk guy at Gentle Star is Nikko... The Fabulous Nikko, if I may. And Nikko gives the best front desk & phone I've seen in a long time! Professional and caring. Full of information galore about the services. Never product-pushy. Never a shread of attitude. That's big in my book.  Sometimes it's everything. Well done NIkko :D

I do not know where to begin with Gentle star!  If there were one time I could triple my Yelper Power and give15 stars, Gentle Star would in fact be it.  It is the best of everything, completely in its own league.

Skincare at it's ultimate best.  Craig truly knows his stuff and leaves nooo pore unturned, with such preciseness that you don't look like you just emerged from some cat fight like you would with most extraction sessions even half this thorough.  You will easily be in there for 90 minutes plus of the best treatment your skin will ever receive!  The time sounds daunting but manages to fly by as Craig himself is amazing to chat with and a joy to be around even amidst massive pore excavation and the like.

Craig goes far beyond the facial, deep in to every element of skin care, from products to effects of life in general!  He is not pushy whatsoever, and has even gone as far as to ask me to return products I have had for months because he didn't feel they were the ideal fit for me and then even give me a deal on a new, even better suited line.  He manages to simultaneously maintain budget sensitivity while ensuring your skin is in the best possible care.  He genuinely cares and is always utilizing his expertise beyond belief.  He has called me on more than 1 occasion with follow up thoughts, concerns, and amazing insight.  On top of that he will get back to any call or email at shooting star speed always with the most valuable answers and solutions, never ever would he brush off or race through any concern.

I have only experienced Craig's facials and, consequently, do not ever want to even try anyone else, but I am positive that anyone working with him in Gentle Stars is unparalleled as well.  This skin care is not a fluffy spa day facial but actually speedway to amazing skin tailored best for you.

Then you factor Dr. Ellis in to the equation, and you are amazed that these 2 have found their respective match!  He is equally amazing and with a massive amount of industry knowledge, skill, and just overall incredible thought and logic.  He will not only patiently but also very precisely address any concerns you may have.   I almost feel guilty at how quick he will email back as he is that dedicated and genuinely caring.  As you can tell just by looking at his and Craig's glowing faces, they both hold themselves to utmost perfection and want the same for you as their valued client, which shows in literally everything they do.

Everything about Gentle Star follows this lead, with ever so pleasant and stylish Nikko being on top of any appointment or treatment concerns with quick email and phone communication and the clean yet fun atmosphere of the space itself . . . all topped off by the amazing handmade chocolates which are always of focus as one (such as myself) finds themselves at the front desk.

The location is a nice touch as well, conveniently located in Mint Plaza hiding right across the mall on 5th and Mission in between Chez Papa and Blue Bottle.  Appointments (particularly for Craig's monumental sessions) do indeed take some planning ahead and are indeed an investment, but this is your face and it is just about the best investment one can make for a bright and long tern youthful version of yourself that is worth far more than anything else you can buy to feel your best.  For what you get at Gentle Star it is actually quite the steal for which I feel excited to have found and I am sure that anyone else would feel just as privileged going here as everything at Gentle Star is truly top notch.

I have been going to Gentle Star for over a year and I look like a different person.  My skin is so much healthier and happier after Holly and Dr. Ellis have done their magic and introduced me to right products.  It is not cheap, but it is well worth it if you have troubled skin or pigmentation issues.  I am also a Glow make-up devotee after Holly's advice.  Forget Sephora people and stop going to those aromatherapy facialists where everything is nice but superficial.  If you want to fix your skin and maintain a healthy visage, you need some Gentle Star!

I'm a low/no maintenance gal when it comes to beauty. (short of EXTREMELY  good hygiene) I do take good care of my body, skin, hair, teeth... all the fixed parts. Gentle Star Medspa is a wonderful place to get solid scientific/medical advice and good common sense skin care. Better and more gracious service that any dermatologist I've been to. Craig, Dr Ellis and the staff are super friendly. AND I got a whole host of yummy fish recipes, restaurant reviews and great skincare advice from Dr Ellis on my last visit. What more can a girl ask for?

Did I mention they leave out the most amazing dark chocolates for all their clients. I had 3... ok maybe 4. (no one was counting.. or cared.)

NIKOOOO! Best. Receptionist. Ever. From the minute I got in, he made me feel comfortable. I met with Holly for a treatment, and my skin is looking better than it has in years! I will honestly say that Gentle Star (as high end as it is) really does care about its clients. The entire staff is thoughtful, helpful, and honest. They won't try to push products on you like other establishments I have been to, and if you do decide to buy, you're in great hands. They carry high end products that you won't be able to find even in the best department stores and spas. The best thing about Gentle Star is really how professional, kind, and knowledgeable the staff is. If you've failed time after time with skin treatments or have had years of bad luck with other spas and doctors, TRY GENTLE STAR. I guarantee that you won't leave disappointed.

I LOVE THESE GUYS!  Craig is undoubtly, the BEST, most knowledgable, thorough, fastidious, precise and just flat out fun esthetician I have ever encountered.  I have yet to use Dr. Ellis' services, but I did meet with him and really thought he was professional, kind, honest and warm.  So when the time comes (which is probably soon, but with Craig's help, not as soon as before), I will definitely work with Dr. Ellis.

I'm in my late 30s and had acne since my teenage years.  As an adult my skin cleared up but was prone to periodic breakouts (which I could handle by having facials and using pretty basic products).  However, a couple of years back I lost someone very close and dear to me and the magnitude of that loss resulted in, among other health issues, adult acne-- tiny little bumps everywhere and pretty big yucky bumps on my chin and jawline.

The adult acne refused to go away.  And adult acne, unlike teenage acne, leaves blemishes that last far longer (as you're older and your skin just doesn't heal as quickly; moreover, I exacerbated the problem as I picked and picked and picked.  Asian skin (which I have) is prone to hyper-pigmentation, so adult acne was a real problem, especially if you're prone to pick.

Thus, in vanity and desperation, I first went to a dermotologist and the regime was Retin-A and some topical antibiotics.  That didn't work.  I went to a couple of spas and one was even very good, but they could not really fix my problem either.  So, at a loss, not sure what to do, I googled and ended up on Yelp reading the then few reviews of Gentle Star.  The reviews seemed so sincere that I had to try Gentle Star.  Thank goodness I did.

My skin looks and feels so much better.  Craig's facials really cleared my skin (I've had his deep pore 5 times and microdermabrasion twice).  His recommended products worked beautifully.  I wish I had a before and after picture to post.  But really, my skin is no longer bumpy.  It is softer and more dewy.  My pores look healthier.  And amazingly, the expression lines on my forehead are far softer.  So the results are:  no more bumps, far less blemishes, nominal breakouts, smoother aka younger, healthier looking skin.  I know I sound like a commercial, but it's true.

So try them.  I'm so happy that I did.  Please know that I have been to many spas and none are of this caliber.  When it comes to skin, I am very picky.  I expect results.  Gentle Star delivers.  Oh, everyone there is so incredibly nice, supportive, great listeners and no attitude.  How great and rare is that.

The down side of going to Gentle Star: you will have to start whipping out your ID on a regular basis to unsuspecting supermarket checkers, bouncers and liquor store clerks. And then you might even get the eye ... you know the skeptical eyebrow when they do the math and realize you're two months away from 30. But ...*sigh*... I suppose you could put up with this inconvenience..

Because after all -- you now are the proud owner of the most luminescent, gorgeous creamy skin on God's green earth! Or at least close enough. You've got the kind of skin you've dreamed of, envied, lusted after (so much so that the blonde girl who rides the number 10 bus in the morning probably thinks you will put the moves on her any day now.) But now it's yours. All yours. You are now among the glitterati and don't think it's weird at all when random strangers approach you for autographs and of course skin care advice. And now you might have to purchase a new shiny handbag large enough to hold your new miniature chihuahua.

But all seriousness aside, Dr. Ellis is what every doctor should be: cautious, warm, talented, ego-free, and always looking out for your best interest. He takes his time, answers any and all questions, allays your fears, does magic on your face and then gives you amazing chocolate candy at the end.

Hellooo? What wonderful life did you just wake up in? Mine. Yay.

In fact, stop reading already, make an appointment and get your own wonderful life. Or if you must ...

A little about IPL: 15 minutes of Dr. Ellis pressing a bug zapper like device carefully over your face. This shower head contraption blasts intense flashes of light so bright that you can see the back of your retinas on the inside of your eyelids -- through padded sun bed goggles. I'm a big baby when it comes to pain and this was totally doable. Better than extractions, for sure. The smell of burnt hair is weird, but gives you an added bonus of being hair free for a few weeks. You leave with cute little freckles (and some not so little) all over your face. But don't get too attached to these guys because they will soon fall off and leave you looking like Snow White. While I do miss the freckles actually, I don't miss anything else. (side note: I think if women want to look younger a few precious little flecks strategically placed is the way to go. so adorable.)

Price: Under $400. A smokin deal.

Also five stars for Niko, "Bear," and the adorable girl at the front counter who really had me on the edge of my seat with her gripping accounts of wedding day mishaps, which actually caused me to stop breathing momentarily.  ;)

This place is the best in San Francisco. Craig is an absolute sweetheart and he really knows his stuff. I am a spa junky and a licensed esthetician, so when I say a place is good, I know what I am talking about.
