i love this place! it's in an unassuming shopping center (with plenty of free parking!), but it can be surprisingly packed inside. come during peak dinner hours and there's a wait! it's not a large place, so that makes it difficult to accommodate large parties.
all of their entrees are more like side dishes. about $5-7 each, you can sample various items from their large menu. i suggested that my friends and i attempt to eventually order everything offered, but we find it hard to stray from the items that have been tried and true. salt and peppered sea bass is fried perfectly garnished with loads of jalapeno, garlic and onion (watch out, it lingers). water spinach is simply sauteed with garlic. simple, easy, and always good. our 3rd or 4th item can vary. this time we ordered the seafood fried rice and beef with scallions. both were good and had a lot to offer the stomach. the fried rice is a lot on the oily side, so be careful. or not. it would just look like you just applied lip balm.
The gf & I always liked eating here.
Good tempura, great sushi, excellent atmosphere.
The service was always good (though one time some creepy chef kept inexplicably staring at me through the kitchen window while I was eating...).
OVERALL bomb place & food.
Basically couldn't think of a reason NOT to give 'em 5 stars.
Genroku has fallen off a bit in the last 5 years. It all started when they lost their sushi chef (i think his name was sean?). They still offer dollar sushi on Sundays, but it's just not very good anymore. The fish was warm and the rice wasn't packed as well as it should've been. Boo.
So forget the sushi and stick with the Taiwanese cuisine. Their hot food remains some of the best when it comes to affordable, traditional Taiwanese cooking. We started off our meal with an order of the Yakitori ($4), a japanese-style appetizer that consists of 2 pieces of chicken and beef marinaded and grilled on skewers. Both were very good. We then ordered the Pork Fried Rice/Tomato Sauce ($5). This was something we had never tried before. You take pork fried rice, and wrap it up in egg (like an omelet) and then cover it with ketchup. We had no idea that's what they meant when they said "tomato sauce". It turned out to be one of my favorite things we ate that day! You take your spoon and just puncture the egg and mix it all up. Mmmm soo good.
So you see, you don't need to order their sushi to enjoy the food here. In fact, next time I'm here I'm all about trying more unique cooked dishes.
Seating is a little cramped when it gets busy on Friday and Saturday nights. The restaurant isn't very big and probably holds about 70 people. This place isn't upscale and snooty - don't expect candlelight or any kind of romantic atmosphere. It's usually pretty noisy.
Service is on par with other Chinese restaurants. You have to flag down someone if you want a refill, but the food comes out in a hurry! No kidding! We ordered our food and in less than 5 minutes, it came out! Awesome. Prices are reasonable, with most dishes costing about $6-7 on average.
I like Genroku. I just won't be having any of their sushi again.
This is one of my fav asian spots in the Metroplex. Been coming here for close to ten years. I started out when i worked a few blocks away. Its a Taiwanese Restaurant but they also have great sushi. The Sushi is very decent but i love the Taiwanese Varieties. I am a big fan of the Basil Chicken, Whole Tilapia with tofu cooked in a Sauce, I love the Pan Fried Sea Bass and their Fried Rice is the closest to how it tastes like in the Far East and not the Mexican cooked Fried Rice we are used to in the metroplex. For lunch they have decent bento boxes and for apetizers i normally do the taiwanese Sausages. On special occasions one can also order the Sushi Boat which the Chef makes a beautiful boat with assorted sushi types. The food is very affordable and its in a strip mall and the waiting staff are very efficient.
Love Genroku sushi.
I was in Dallas this past weekend, visiting from Austin.
This place looks like a Japanese restaurant from the name, but there's a large section of Taiwanese food on the menu. As soon as I come in, I know the wait staffs are all Chinese, and there's a group pf Chinese people sharing several dishes on a round table. So I decided to try the Taiwanese menu. With my limited chinese character reading skills, i was able to recognize "San Bei Ji" or 3 cups chicken, which I love!! It's translated as basil chicken on the menu. That's all I ordered and I loved it!
One of my groups of friends used to meet up here in large groups allllll the time, so I've been here several times, but not much lately as those big meetups aren't happening so much anymore. We went for the Japanese food so I won't be reviewing the Taiwanese/Chinese side of the menu. Genroku is a decent place to get some pretty good food--I mean, there are better places, but it's okay. I think I first tried Japanese food here, in a bento box. I also tried my first piece of sushi (California roll) here, with two other friends also trying it for the first time--and promptly spit it back out (it turns out I hate imitation crab and nori!).
Anyway, I think we've all moved on to bigger and better things and places now, and at this point I'd much rather get Japanese food anywhere else in Dallas, but I guess if you're in the area and you want a cheap meal this would be a good place to go.
My friends are bastards. Thats all i got to say. One of them has been eating here for 13 years and did not tell me. Bastards.
Yeah it is that good.
The Taiwanese are deluded. They don't know that of all the Chinese food countries - Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland, their food is the worst. Trust me. I know. I am in Hsinchu 4 to 5 times a year. Last 15 years.
So when someone tells me there is a Taiwanese restaurant, I am like - Poo Hao.
Genoroku taiwanese food rocks. There. I said it. The Kung Pao chicken is the best. This side of Taoyuan. The salted sea bass with pepper and jalapenos is simple and delicous. Fish was light and fluffy.
Kids ordered Matrix roll sushi and the bento box. Amazingly flavored Tonkatsu-don and sushi.
Genroku has leapt to the top of our list of favorite Chinese places.
Go there. You will love it.
i came here on a busy friday night and got promptly seated at the sushi bar.. service was quick... and food was coming out of the kitchen and sushi bar relatively fast..
i got the bento box (breaded pork chop and mackeral) and an order of sashimi.. the salad that came with the meal was not very good.. the miso soup was decent..
the bento box itself was pretty good.. the pork chop was nicely breaded and fried.. the mackeral was really tasty with a bit of fresh lemon.. the tempura was a bit on the oily side..
as for the sashimi.. i'm surprised how fresh it was.. it consisted of tuna, salmon, yellowtail and white tuna.. it was great.. albeit pricy for such a small plate..
overall.. the food was decent.. and reasonably priced (except for the sashimi).. i'll be heading back here again
I've been here a few times and always on dollar sashimi days. I've liked their tuna although today's visit was a little sub-par. They do have a strange layout and a lot of employees... its strange that they get so slow but maybe they just get deceptively crowded. I eat early so I never have that problem and haven't realy noticed the servers being mean.
The chicken with basil is good but when I had it the chicken was hard to get off the bone, which is left in, and I ended up picking a lot of bone out of my teeth. Today I had grilled mackrel and it was surprisingly good, because I usually dont' like white fish that much. I recommend this place.
From the many times that I've been here I've only had their bento boxes. Their grilled salmon is pretty decent, the tonkatsu is crispy good, and the beef is ... well lets just say you might wanna drench it in the sauce that it comes with it. The salad with the ginger dressing is pretty cool and refreshing. The miso soup is pretty good as well. The tempura veggies are a little greasy, but crispy.
I just keep coming here because their bentos are cheap as hell. For the price, I really can't complain.
Never had sushi there. It is owned by people from Taiwan.
Had their bentos and taiwan dishes. Not bad at all. Cheap price. Dishes come at small portions too. Maybe it is because the tables are so small ? :-) So you need to order more to share.
The 3.5 average suits this place well. I was just there today - for the first time eating in - usually get take out with the girlfriend.
Takeout has treated us well. We usually keep it pretty simple with spicy tuna or salmon rolls, seaweed salad and the occasional miso soup to go. Have never had any complaints, other than the sometimes inconsistent portions of seaweed salad, but that's not a big deal.
Came here today for lunch, my girlfriend and I both went with the bento. I ordered the grilled salmon, and she had the teriyaki chicken. They were both good and tasted pretty fresh. The rest of the bento was decent and very reasonable for the price. Our total came out to ~$20. Very good!
My quarrels and reason for the 3 star rating lie with the service. She had previously warned me of the lax service and I found that out today. The waitress came to take our order after a few minutes of just sitting there with the menus closed. We both asked for water and went ahead and ordered our meals.
Within short order we both received our miso and salad. Tasty to start with. Our meals came shortly thereafter, but no sign of our water. I asked if we got get our water, and the waitress just looked at me and walked off. As we were finishing our meal, our water finally came, practically with the check. As we were leaving we noticed another table, a Taiwanese couple, who received all their order almost immediately. Cheaters. Not that impressive! But then again, I was warned...
This was a staple of mine for 5 years. I took everyone here, and I ate here at least 2 times a week. The reason I only give this 2 stars is because of the last experience I had here. They brought me water with a large cockroach leg in it. It really turned my stomach and I had to quit my favorite place cold turkey. Oh another thing, the waitresses are not friendly - at all.
If that doesn't bother you, then go for it. Wednesdays and Thursdays have $1 sushi for lunch. They also have great special at the back of the menu. You get an entree with soup for around $5 and it goes all day. Sushi bento is also a great deal and tasty.
This place belongs to a friend of mine and his family. Like others have said, it's Taiwanese owned but they still put out great Japanese fare. The menu is extensive and VERY reasonably priced. A great value for what you get. I enjoy items from here such as the stir fried ramyun, ma po tofu, bento boxes, and sushi rolls. I've never had anything bad to say about the food here. It can get a bit busy at times, but that's a sure fire sign that they're doing something right here.
I have tried many of the dishes and usually end up ordering Nabeyaki Udon and a salad. Granted their salad nor the dressing is anything to be desired. However, the consistency of taste in their food is excellent! Lunch time is usually busy and dinner time as well. Good luck on weekends. Genroku seems to be one of the few places along the strip that is constantly packed during meal time. The sushi is not exactly the best. I have had better elsewhere. Their fish (both sashimi and cooked) are fresh. I highly recommend this place who is looking to try something new or find that familiar taste in Asian cuisine.
This was my favorite sushi place to hit when I lived in Dallas. The sushi are cheap, large, and tasty. It's usually busy every time I've went so you might have to wait for a few minutes. There's random little boba tea stores, and random asian things shops just next door if you want to waste some time.
Two rolls in particular I like to get here than anywhere else. The spider roll (soft shell crab) and the salmon skin roll. They have the largest soft shell crabs I've eaten at sushi restaurants, and have always hit that spot for me. The salmon skin rolls at most places usually have remnants of salmon pieces on it, which ruins the skin flavor. Genroku's skin have always been sliced thin with no pieces of salmon on it, so when they fry it to make the rolls, that's all you taste (Yumm). Second, they have taiwanese rice dishes which have been pretty good as well.
I've introduced this place to some friends, a couple who have hit this place every time they want sushi since then. Don't be alarmed that it's in a kinda dingy looking shopping center (most asian centers are). Try it out if you're close by.
One of my favorite place, but maybe not exactally for the sushi. This is a small restaurant, usually pack during lunch time and late dinner. I've been eating here for years and enjoyed it everytime.
Sushi: I like the volcano rolls with crawfish, spider, and of course california. (plus seaweed salad)
Starters: Miso Soup and ginger salad!
Entrees: I absolutely love the salt and pepper Fried Tofu with Jalapeno and onions. So delicious! My husband loves the stir fried udon. Some of the other things we like are the regular Bento Box, Basil Chicken, and Salt and pepper pork.
*Wed. is there dollar sushi day!
With mised feelings about Genroku, I deceided to wait till the third trip (obviously something appeals) before adding to its reviews.
The food is good, especially considering the Sunday $1 sushi specials. The selection is extremely limited, but if your preference is for salmon, mackeral or yellow tail you will be satisfied and probably very pleased.
There are also other Sunday specials worth checking out too, such as the stir-fried ramen with pork. $5 will get you a a very tasty and filling plate of comfort food. And other dishes like the Agedashi Tofu are excellent.
Unfortunately, unless you are seated at the sushi bar the service can hav problems. On two visits the service was bordering on non-existent, including having thre waitress gabbing and then pawn off taking our order to the one who apparently had the least seniority. Not a good way to work, and certainly unwise when the customers in question are sitting less than 3 feet from you! And this is not happening when there is a full restaurant, either. On the third visit we had prompt and attentive service, though the attitude from the waitress was very clear and off-putting. I am hoping that I am wrong, but I am getting the distinct feeling that the wait staff really doesn't like anglos in the place. If that is the case, they better get over it, because it cheap, good food and convenient for me on Sunday afternoons. If I have another waitress like the one the day of the Akimatsuri, she will find I leave her a written "tip" instead of cash - and she better be able to read hiragana.
There is a local vibe to Genroku that gives turns any fault to a charm. What is it about their Sushi that is so addicting? Seriously, take a crowded place, in a strip mall, with crabby servers and as long as I skip the salad, I'm good to go.
The typical Richardson office worker needs to put Genroku on their weekly lunch visits. They have really good lunch specials hand written on the walls (I'll usually get the Salmon Lovers special) and Wednesday is Dollar sushi. It's all very well priced.
Eh... this hodgepodge of Asian cuisines doesn't quite appeal to me, as they don't specialize in one type. Sushi is acceptable, especially since it's the only place in Richardson that really offers it, but it isn't anything special. They just really get a forte, as nothing I've had here is killer good. Overall, if you want to sample a bit of all of the different for from the Far East, try this one.
volcano roll, tomato and eggs, salt and pepper tofu, sushi sushi sushi love it =)
If you want a tasty, chinese/taiwanese traditional meal, Genroku is the place to go. The type of food here is for those that appreciate and are accustomed to a strong palate. This is Taiwanese dishes. I love the fact that the food comes to you scorching hot and fresh and is filled with mouthwatering flavor. Drool. I never go without ordering the Chicken with Basil and the Mapo Tofu. I've had these 2 dishes at many other restaurants, and this place seems to make it the best. It seems such simplistic dishes, but Genroku really gets it right.
I have yet to try the sushi--but I've heard its good. Don't expect great service, expect awesome food!
It's supposed to casual Japanese cuisine, however, you also get a list of Taiwanese dishes too. Their prices are very decent, especially something like a bento box. (Like less than $10 dollars, last I was there.) Their sushi is okay, I think they've switched sushi chefs or something.
Genroku can get extremely packed depending on the time of day you go.
this restaurant has both japanese and tawainese menus. my review is for the taiwanese food only.
although their name may suggest they are a japanese restaurant, they actually specialize and excel in taiwanese cuisine. i have enjoyed everything i've ever ordered there. some recommendations: twice cooked pork, basil chicken, mapo tofu, water spinach, shrimp with walnuts and mayonnaise (trust me, it's really good)...can't really go wrong here
overall: really good taiwanese food for a great price. most of their entrees are under $9
This same waittress that works there is so fucking annoying, but despite her working there and her waiting on us each time, I willingly overlook this in order to gorge myself in good food.
Reasonably priced, they have a sorta Taiwanese menu and the rolls, sushi are all interesting enough, there's this dish that has deep fried chicken in garlic, mustve been carmelized in something but that sucker was good! Hmmmm...makes my mouth water just thinking about it....
Parking lot available, cash and credit accepted.
Hm..I was pretty sure I wrote a review about Genroku already. Oh well. Like everyone else has said, this place is super cheap and the food is super tasty. The service is horrible and you will wait, but it's ok. I think it's the layout of the place or something..no clue.
Anyway, we had 5 rolls--philly, rainbow, spider, caterpillar, and volcano. All were yummy and fresh tasting, but very small. The volcano roll which is something I usually don't like (but a friend wanted) was excellent. The spicy creamy sauce was delish and the rolls weren't drenched and soggy like at other places. Also the fried nuggets of shrimp on top were crunchy and hot. Yum!
We also ordered veggie fried rice for my niece and it was tasty and not salty or greasy at all.
The green tea ice cream was gross tho, they need to buy a different brand I guess. We spent $60 for the rolls, rice, miso soup for everyone, and bowl of ice cream. Really good price!
Other things I have enjoyed there is the mapo dofu..like Jessica C said, really tasty and not too spicy, but I like it. Also the eggplant is good--kind of greasy, but it tastes good!
Their bento boxes are cheap all the time, you don't have to wait until 6pm on Wednesday like at some places.
---
More delish dishes you should try, the i think it's called twice cooked pork in english-it's under the taiwanese dishes. so good! it's spicy uncured bacon. mmmm
Genroku is a affordable place to go for lunch. They have good sushi and a number of Japanese dishes. The bentou boxes are a good deal for lunch. I've been pleased most of the time I've gone there. They aren't just Japanese though, almost half their menu is Taiwanese. The Basil Chicken is supposed to be awesome, but I haven't tried it yet. It's all delicious.
It's not that Genroku is that much better than other places-- it's the fact that it's cheap, the sushi is not bad, and the menu is long and varied. The crowd tends to be UTD students, Asians of all ages, and a smattering of people from the neighborhood.
I frequent this place quite a bit with my husband. We like to go there for an inexpensive and delicious bite. I enjoy the chicken fried rice (although it has been too greasy at times) which I can easily share with my husband. For the large plate of chicken fried rice and a bowl of miso soup, it costs about $5. I also like the philadelphia and cajun rolls, they are always delicious. Do not expect great service, but the food is usually very good! Usually, for both me and the husband it costs about $15 or so depending on whether or not we order sushi along with the chicken fried rice.
This is a must stop place for me when visiting Texas. Love the Taiwanese menu, as the taste is fairly reminiscent of the home cooked meals I'm currently missing out on. Some of the dishes are better then others..The Basil Chicken is out of this world!! I take one to go whenever I leave Texas. I would stay away from the fish dishes ironically...as the cooked dishes don't tast near as good as the sushi they serve. Serving sizes are a bit on the small side also, but still worth a visit.
