Review from Heather M.
DeKalb, IL
This is a relaxed Geneva hangout. If you're a hardcore beer drinker, this is pretty much your personal heaven. If you're not, like me, you'll still be able to find something you'll enjoy (might I recommend the pear cider? It's like candy!). Fewer props on the peppermint martini--even if it is on special (no one can explain why "it tastes like Big Red," as our friend said).
Our waitress--who is apparently normally a bartender--was fantastic when we visited. She gave honest opinions and recommendations based on what we told her we did and did not like, but she wasn't the least bit pushy. Her assistance made it much easier to navigate the extensive menu.
Only tried one food item on the menu, which was decent.
It is freaking COLD in there, though, and we haven't even had that cold of a winter yet. I don't think I took my coat off the whole time--and that was even after some drinking.
Overall, not bad. -

The food here has gone downhill.
French Onion Soup is downright awful. That soup is so easy to make and their version is gross. I sent it back and still had to pay for it. Their fried pickles are awful too. A burger maybe good (although it's been awhile since I've had one). Since this place opened the menu has just died.
A house salad is $3 or $4 bucks most places, theirs is north of $7 and has barely anything on it. No cheese even. Total rip off.
$6 or $7 for a Two Brothers Cain & Able is downright outrageous! You can buy a six pack a block away at the liquor store.1 Previous Review: Show all »

We went here after going to the Kane County flea market. I was intrigued by the massive beer list on their website. When ordering, the beer menu was really great. I got a sampler and then ordered a pint of Zombie Dust. The food was ok.
I was expecting it to look different inside. It felt like an interior of a new strip mall. I guess I expect "ale houses" to have a different feel. Maybe more rustic. In the end, the best part was the brew selection but across the street and down a bit we ducked into a bar with food and it felt much more welcoming and homey. I forgot the name of the place, but we wished we had gone there first. -

Great burgers. Onion rings were a little too breaded and massive for my taste. Wide variety of biers.

If you have a sophisticated beer palate, and enjoy some fine conversation with the owner and bartender (love ya, Jessica) over your favorite malty or hoppy concoction, this is your place. It's friendly. At turns, the conversation is highbrow (Modern American Literature reading list) or gutter-bound. It's the kind of bar every neighborhood wishes it had, but so few actually have. It is also, therefore, the only place I go to catch a beer and a conversation. Long live the Ale House.

We just wandered into Geneva Ale House on a sultry Sunday afternoon to wet our whistle. As soon as I plunked myself down at the bar and gazed upon the tap handles I knew I was going to like this place. No Miller/ Bud Lite, MGD, Bud dreck in site. Only great craft brews. They have a great selection of beers including Trumer, Lagunitas, Three Floyds, Two Brothers just to name a few. There are about a dozen beers on tap.
We decided to order lunch and I went with the Artichoke Chicken Panini while my bride ordered the Veggie Panini. We shared them and both agreed that they were very good. We are glad that we decided to order the sweet potato fries. Oh man! They qualify for a full star on their own. They dip them in some type of batter, fry them and sprinkle them with parmesan cheese.
Geneva Ale House is a nice clean bar that is proud of its beer selection. It was great chatting with Raymond at the bar while families with kids sat at tables near the door. The place just had a great vibe. Based upon their beers and fantastic sweet potato fries, I know this will be a future destination spot when we go for a drive in the "country". -

I went back last week for some Octoberfest beer and I decided to have a burger. Fantastic idea. I had the cheeseburger that was sandwiched between 2 grilled cheeses. Holy cow! I never want a boring old bun again. It may kill me, but it was DELICIOUS! I will most certainly return!

On a recent autumn drive my husband and I stopped in Geneva Ale House for a late lunch. We sat right at the bar (it was 2:30 on a Tuesday afternoon) and chatted up the bartender. I did a sampling of three beers and my husband tried two glasses. I had a burger with blue cheese and fries (good) but was very, very jealous of my husband's lunch of barbecue chicken, homemade slaw and mac n' cheese. The piece de resistance? The 3-cheese mac n' cheese! It was heavenly! We also adored the cheese curds (phenomenal)! I bet this place is hoppin' and fun on a Friday or Saturday night but I enjoyed it nice and quiet on a Tuesday.

I'd go 3 1/2 stars if I could.
Beer was definitely spot on....nice selection for sure. Tried the Lagunitas Undercover Shutdown and a Brooklyn Summer ale. Hadn't had either before and both were quite tasty. There was a wide variety including some monstrosity that was 41% and came as essentially a shot (1oz) for 21$. Interesting, I'll say that.
As for the food, meh. I'm not sure what compels me to keep ordering fish tacos at places like this. Maybe it's because I keep hoping I'll find one place that does them well. Unfortunately my friends burger looked far better, I should have just gone with that.
I guess the bottom line is for a burger and a beer this is probably a 4.5-5 star place. I just wasn't exactly encouraged to branch out into any other areas of the menu. At the same time, I agree with another reviewer who poo-pooed the cubano sandwich saying if you can't do it right, take it off the menu. I feel the same way, honestly these fish tacos shouldn't really be on the menu. Also the service was a bit spotty, we were left very lonely by the waitress at times despite there not really being a ton of people in there. -

This place is awesome. A great selection on tap, and not just the stuff you find anywhere else. 100+ bottles of brew and the best damn onion rings I've ever had. Oh, and the burgers don't suck either. Great ambiance for a pub of its caliber.

This is a Great Ale House for being in the suburbs.
I don't even know if you can still consider Geneva as a suburb, it's SO far away from the actual city. I suppose since the Metra runs out there it still counts.
Back to the review:
This place has an AMAZING beer selection. In addition to the beer on tap they have about as many different bottled beer options as you can think of.
I've been there at least three times now with a friend, every time we get an updated list of what's on tap. We actually keep track of the beers we've tried and rate them (I'm on a Yes, No system while my friend rates them 1-10). That way, next time we go in we know what we've tried and what needs to be tried next.
They also have GREAT food. I haven't had their burgers or other main dishes but I have had their Fried Cheesecake (YUMM!) and their Sweet Potato Fries (with Parmesan Cheese) both items were DELICIOUS!
Finally, service is Great! The waiters and bar staff are incredibly friendly and outgoing. We've received a range of advice from best places to live (nationwide) to best beer on tap. I really appreciate their friendly and warm atmosphere. -

YUMMMM!!
Good food, good beer!! what more could you ask for?
I have been to this place a couple times, and each experience has been great.
The staff is very friendly and knows their beer, which is helpful for the extensive beer menu they offer!!
The menu is mostly burgers served on pretzel rolls and they are HUGE and Delicious!! I love their sweet potato frys (they top them with lite powdered sugar)
I highly recommend stopping here if you love beer and are in the mood for a burger :) -

Definitely the best place in Geneva to go to get a good beer. A great selection on tap, that is ever changing. There is also a nice list of bottled beers.
I would give it another star if the food was better. I've found the food to be okay...but nothing more than what I would expect from generic bar food. -

Oh Yelp, it's been too long. My butt needs to be kicked into gear to write a new review...I guess the Geneva Ale House did that for me...
I was going to give this place 3 stars at first, because it is a-okay. But I really have nothing to complain about so 4 it is. My friends and I came in here one late Saturday night and the place was kinda dead. There were a few tables full, but that's it. We got right in and sat wherever we wanted. Our waitress was great. She was really, really nice. I dare say she was almost a bit TOO nice, to the point where it was almost a little creepy, but it's better than a crappy waitress. So service? Great.
Libations? They had a great beer list. Lots of different bottles to please just about anyone, including the beer snobs that my friends and I are. Their tap selection was great too! I had a Dreadnaught...yum! I also had a martini that night that was made good, nice and strong and tasty.
The food? I had a Reuben with sweet potato fries. The Reuban was great...the corn beef was perfect, but I could have used more kraut. And the fries...I love sweet potato fries and these were great. We also got an order of fried pickles, which wasn't on their late night menu we had to order from, but they made them for us anyway, so that was awesome. They were tasty pickles with a nice spicy sauce.
All in all, a good solid place. I'd come back for their beer selection alone. I'm not in downtown Geneva all that often, so we'll see the next time I get back in there, but I'm definitely willing!Listed in: BEER!

While visiitng the Festival of the Vine this weekend, we were looking for a place to eat. We looked at the food tent and it was jammed so we ducked into the Ale House to 1) eat 2) have beer and 3) watch the Bears.
We were seated right away. Went ahead with a slider sampler of sorts with filet medalions, pulled pork and burgers and a separate order of a brisket sandwich. Also, they were running a special of a beer flights for 3 4oz pours for 8 bucks - that works! OK, here were the good and not so good:
Good: Filet medallions with peppers and onions were great. Burgers had good flavor and certainly worth another try. Plenty of beer selection both on tap (will have more later) and by the bottle. Good service. Plenty of TVs for sports watchers like myself. Sweet potato fries rock. Potato chips are quite good also.
Not so good: They have 8-10 beers on tap and were very heavy in pale ales and IPAs (I'm not complaining as a hop head but not everyone is one), the brisket was exteremely dry (this is what led to the 3 star review). Standard fries were soggy and uneventful.
I will certainly come back when in the area and give some other food a try. I will steer clear of the brisket again. -

We stopped by last night based on excellent reviews from our friends. Awesome service, great craft brews, friendly staff and the food top notch.
The place was packed, we were greeted immediately and informed that we could grab a drink at the bar and a table would be available shortly. Standing room only at the bar so we had to stand at the end of the bar. Before we even got close we were handed two extensive craft beer menus and we were waited on in seconds. My boyfriend and I each selected a different beer flight and it was presented to us in seconds. About 5 minutes later we were asked if we wanted to sit at a table and decided to hang at the bar and eat. Seats opened up and our beer was moved over to our seats. Im telling you the service is amazing! Great craft beer selection! I ordered the fried pickles and sliders (pulled pork, beef and chicken) on pretzel rolls. yum yum yum. Coooked perfect and flavorful. We'll be back again!!! -

Well hello, Yelp. It's certainly been awhile. But, I'm about to be back with a bang! I'm newly(ish) engaged and wedding planning has opened up a whole new world of reviews to write! More to come...
But my fiance (squeeee!) and I were in Geneva to meet with a florist and decided to grab a bite to eat. I knew there was no way we'd make it through a floral meeting without sustenance, so I scoped out Yelp and landed on Geneva Ale House.
It was slightly better than meh. Thanks to semi-wintery conditions and an appointment to make, we were in a bit of a time-crunch. The restaurant was short-staffed and had a flurry of patrons with children in the time we were there. I was not at all impressed by the food--I had a turkey sandwich on a pretzel roll and onion strings. The turkey was icky and the onion strings were flat-out gross to me. I'd be willing to give it another shot if I were in the area...and the florist was a huge delight, so I'm guessing I'll be back to give GAH another go.
Coming up...bridal gowns, and reception venues, and photographers, oh my! -

They've got a great beer list.
They've only got a few taps but they're mostly good, their bottle list is HUGE.
Food was pretty good. Typical bar food offerings just done quite well.
Overall a great place, if I end up thirsty and or hungry in Geneva again I'll definitely be stopping here again. -

I think I visited on the wrong day to really get an excellent review of this place but overall, minus the pretty crappy service, I enjoyed my time at Geneva Ale House. First and foremost, they carry Two Brothers which is what brought me out this way. The Ale House was doing an ice cream and beer pairing.. um HELLO?! Why wouldn't you want to have a bunch of yummy beer floats.
The place was pretty jam packed full of people who were there for the event, so I understood the servers/bartenders were busy, but after things slowed down, it really seemed like our server didn't give two shits. It kind of annoyed me. She brought our checks without us even asking for them.. and I was going to have another beer too!!
However, what really made up for the butthead server was the FRIED PICKLES! YUM!! I love friend pickles, seriously, they're the best.. and I've never had them with Parmesan cheese sprinkled on them, and it was delightful!
I love the fact that this place has really yummy beer, a great selection, and delicious food. I think the environment could be a little more welcoming and comfortable, but, after a few beers, I feel right at home. I'd definitely go back and hopefully my server will be better and get me to the 5 star review. -

I enjoyed my meal at the Geneva Ale House. The place was a little plain inside, but the sandwiches were delicious and the salads were very fresh. I had the baked french onion soup and it was very tasty.
very casual place with a wide selection of beers. Most of them are not on tap, but still a wide variety.
Not my 100% favorite place, but i would eat here again. -

Been here about 4 times now. Was looking for a place with fried pickles in the area and they have great fried pickles for a reasonable price! All the meals I have had here have been great. Just wish this place was a little bigger, not a lot of tables so you might have to wait awhile. They have a great selection of beers and ciders and seasonal choices that you may not find elsewhere

Review from Steve G.
I'm being a little generous on the stars here, but it's better than a 2 star place, so let's round up.
First the good news: Great tap selection, really good bottle selection. Good burger, other than the Turano pretzel bun that turns into a matzo cracker when you start to wolf it down...
Now, the bad news: What's with the 2" of head on the Belgian ales? And why is all the beer just slightly cooler than ambient temperature? And what's with the music -- a stereo stuck ceiling high with two speakers? Really? Put a decent sound system in - please!
More bad news -- the "Cubano" came out looking like a quesadilla - no, really. If you can't get decent Cuban bread and a press, drop it from the menu. Most of the other sandwiches looked good, though.
Great crowd on a Friday night though. Get a good beer-tender behind the bar, upgrade the stereo, refine the menu, and this place will ROCK! Stand by for an update soon... -

Been here a few times now and still impressed. Great beer selection that is constantly changing. The food has been good, with a few exceptions. I recommend the brisket, the reuben or the cajun rigatoni. The sweet potato fries are excellent too! Never had a problem with the service here.
It can be hard to get a table if you arrive during prime hours on Thursday - Saturday. Unfortunately there is no outdoor seating. Highly recommend this place for anyone who enjoys craft beers. -

Geneva Ale House was quite the experience! They have an enormous selection of beers and delicious food. Being from Milwaukee, only the American lager beers were recognizable, but they had a wide variety of different styles of beers that I was eager to try. I had the Agave Wheat which was a tasty drink with the Ale House Burger! The sweet potato fries were like candy and the burger and beer were superb. The staff was good quality and the whole experience satisfying. It is definitely a great place to check out as long as you are ready to spend about $15-$20 a person if you are buying alcohol.

Review from Chuck D.
Okay, I cracked. My friend and I had an agreement that she would give Geneva Ale House 5 stars, and I would give it 4. Our reasoning for this was we both believed this establishment deserved 4.5 stars... that, and we were a little, lets say, tipsy. However, when I logged on and saw this place only had 3 Stars... THREE STARS??! ... I was outraged. This is undeserved! Had I researched this on Yelp before going, I would have probably skipped it. Usually anything 3 stars and under isn't worth my time! For once, I'm super glad I didn't take the time to listen to Yelp!
This place gives me hope for the future of the Chicago Burbs. Lets just say that Michigan knows how to have a good Ale House - wide variety of micro-brewed beers on tap with an interesting menu that is just darn good bar food with those small extra twists. For once, as my boyfriend that is actually from here actually pointed out, I felt like I was in a Michigan Bar... and it was delightful! This was not just because they offered Founders AND Bells on tap (but this was pretty exciting for me). They also offered local beers (Two Brothers!!) and a variety of micro brews that I have come to know and love from all over the United States. They happily offered samples of any beers we had not yet tried - a true sign of a ale house that isn't just looking for a profit, but one that is looking to turn all their patrons into beer lovers as well.
What I really wanted to order was the burger stuffed with bacon, blue cheese, and jalapenos (it should just be called the Chuck Burger as it was as if it was MADE for me!), but having had Five Guys for lunch, I just couldn't bring myself to have ANOTHER giant burger that same day....but I will be back for it...oh yes I will! I, however, was not at all disappointed in my ultimate selection of the Cajun Rigatoni. This was the perfect blend of spiciness and feta cheese. Delish!
I may be on the market for a new boyfriend soon, as my boyfriend opted to get the Double Bypass. This is a burger that I have only heard legend of and never had the opportunity to actually order it, I didn't think anywhere would ever have the balls to put this on the Menu. Well, my friends, Geneva Ale House has the balls. This is a burger that isn't on just a bun, but rests between two grilled cheese sandwiches.. not skimpy smooshed ones, this is a grilled cheese sandwich that you would receive one of at a normal restaurant and still be quite happy with your life! As disgusted as I was by this, I have to say.... it. was. great! Would I ever have more then one bite? Okay, maybe two....but never would I order this...and finish it as my brave boyfriend did. However, if you think your heart can handle it, I would definitely recommend giving it a try!
Also sampled the Campfire Burger on the yummy pretzel bun and was very impressed. Our vegetarian friend ordered a veggie "burger" that took a different spin on things. Instead of imitating a burger, it was large slices of grilled fresh veggies that she enjoyed quite a bit as well!
I'm not too sure why this has gotten not the best reviews. I liked the location and the set up just as much as I enjoyed the beer selection and the food! I will definitely be coming back here to claim the burger that they made just for me (so I like to think) and have some more brews that you just can't find anywhere else in the area. I highly recommend you check this out if you like good beer and good food (and who doesn't?). -

There needs to be a zero star rating. How else do you rate a restaurant that has completely failed you. In this case, Geneva Ale House lied to me. They told me, with great enthusiasm, that I would have a table for two at an agreed-upon time. In the parlance of our times, this is known as a "reservation." I made efforts to uphold my end of the bargain: I procured the services of a babysitter; I made promises to my wife; I even shaved. Yet when we arrived at the GAH, there was no table waiting. No, there was only a 40-minute wait. "Sorry," said the waitress, biting her lower lip. "No one is leaving." In other words, GAH didn't need me anymore. Now I must go back out into the cold to search for sustenance elsewhere. 1 minus 1 stars.

This review comes with two conditions, one being location. For no reason would I ever suggest to anyone in any civilized part of the state (read: 606 zip code) to make the trip out here. Go to the Map Room or the Hop Leaf for a truly world class beer bar. The other condition is you must actually like good beer. I think you could probably do better for yourself if all you want is a Miller Lite.
But I digress.
If you should happen to find yourself in this part of the world, you will few few better places to occupy your time. The beer selection is not overbearingly huge, but complete. I tend towards hoppier elixers and the Geneva Ale House delivered in spades. The night we went, they had both Bell's Hopslam and Three Floyd's Dreadnaught on tap. I was thrilled. The lines were clean and beer was served in the proper glassware. Decent selection of Belgians as well.
Our waiter was attentive, friendly and really went of his way for us (despite being quite busy). It was almost too much, but a welcome change from some of the attitudes you often encountered in more desirable parts of the state.
I'm heading back there tonight for a second run at it with some of my drinking buddies. I would recommend highly that you do the same given a geographic impairment and a propensity towards craft beer. -

I ate at the Ale House recently with a friend on a Friday night. It was very busy, so I was not expecting the best service. There was a lot of confusion between the wait staff and what appeared to be the owners or managers. It took very long to get beers before and during our meal.
The food was pretty decent. I left feeling pretty satisfied by what I ate. My friend also enjoyed his. I'll give the Ale House another shot after some time has passed. -

I have been to this play a few times and I really like it. As others have mentioned, their selection on tap is good and it rotates frequently, and their bottle selection is also very good.. If you like craft beer such as Bell's Hopslam or Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout, this place is for you.
For the uninitiated in the craft beer world, the staff is nice enough to suggest a craft beer equivalent of whatever you are familiar with (for example, if you like Coors' popular Blue Moon, they will suggest a real craft beer from a similar style, such as the -in my opinion- superior Allagash White.)
If you just want an "ice cold" Miller Lite/Bud Light/Coors Light and don't have an open mind, you might want to try some other place.
As for the food, it is good. Their burgers are awesome and I really like their sweet potato fries. I will definitely go back again, my go-to place when I'm in the mood for craft beer on tap. -

I always love my visits to the Geneva Ale House. They offer one of the best burgers in the far west burbs (stuffed blue cheese, bacon and jalapenos is my favorite) complimented with 12 beer-snob selections (me) on tap (or 100+ bottle selections). Don't forget the sweet potato fries with a side of spice ranch dressing.

Sadly, I loved this food at this place, but the service SUCKED to say the least. I went with a friend once and no one came and checked on us for 15 minutes after seating us. Then the food took forever to come out and without our drinks. It was bad. Then I went again with my family, and we waited in the front to be seated for 20-30 minutes at least. No one came and said hello, one guy said he'd clean a table for us soon but never did. We ended up calling the bar across the street and going there instead. HIGHLY DISSAPOINTED since it has such great food. Won't be going there again.
