BEST PLACE TO WORK, HANDS DOWN! Google's got nothing on GNE!
This is my first (and only) job since I graduated from Cal and I've been here since January 2008. I had heard stories about how great it is to work for Genentech before I started here and figured that people were over-exaggerating. Wrong!
I started with the company during a very difficult time for both the company and the US economy. I was so fortunate to get this job when I did. While many of my friends were struggling to find stable jobs, I found something stable and career-advancing. It feels great to work for a company that does so much for the community and shows their employees they're valuable.
My favorite part about working for the company is Genentech Gives Back week. This year we had our 2nd annual GNE Gives Back Week complete with donating money when paying for lunch at the cafeterias, donation drive, charity auction, Bay to Beakers Children's Walk (Geeky? Yes. Awesome? Heck yeah!), volunteer day, and a benefit concert at AT&T Park. This year the performers at our concert were Daughtry, Sheryl Crow, and Maroon 5.
I couldn't be happier working for this company. I highly recommend it! -

Oh Genentech, you are the sunshine of my life. Working for you was an amazing experience. Great group of people and very organized company. I worked here for a short 6 months as an intern, and it was one of the best work experiences I ever got. Everyone who works here is so smart!!
Plus they so a lot of fun things as a company. I got to participate in the Genentech Goes To Town - they give the employees some fake money to spend in downtown SSF and these business can exchange them for real money. It's a way to help boost the economy. Also, my group had a bowling event which was super fun.
Overall a great place, but yes can be a bit difficult to navigate around the place on your first day. -

12 years of service as of last October. It's close to home, very accommodating, great benefits. The only downside is we are not Genentech anymore. We are Roche. We are going more and more corporate instead of collegiate environment. We still have parties but not as many or as big. There are a lot of employee perks like bicycles to ride around campus, subsidized cafeterias, flexible hours, commuting assistance. Sabbaticals are still in affect. I'm trying to get 10 weeks of PTO, might get reduced to 8 but will still be awesome. Presently going through layoffs. Hope I survive.
Bottom line: We do great work, research, development, deliver of very much needed pharmaceuticals for people. I love meeting people on our products. Best friends dad's life is being extended because of one of our products. -

FEVER!
Recurring day and night for three consecutive days
102.6° F
101.6° F
Burning me up inside
Cannot get out of this body
FEVER!
As I lay in my death bed with little hope
Grinding apocalyptic pain all over
My stubbornness takes dominance in refusal to ER
Ice blanket in a towel temporary relieved these high numbers
Aggravate into creation for a foul stench of period blood, violent vomit spews and vile diarrhea
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea stemming from a recurring fever
Utter despair
Heavily doped on Aspirin, Tamiflu, and Congee
Albeit perceived as an easy means of loosing weight
FEVER!
Two comforters, one quilt, one duvet sheet become futile to justify the index level of severity
Surprisingly shocked my poor mother to a "no response"
Awaken the whole house all night with the sounds of a toilet flushing
Fire spawn hot and iced bone cold to my heart's core
A voluntary house arrest
For the toilet and bed are my refugee
I breakdown!
Genentech USA, Inc., a member of the Roche Group, is the manufacturer of Tamiflu. (http://www.tamiflu.com) I breakdown! Tamiflu from obtaining an legitimate prescription is like any typical antibiotic for the same common side effects. Side effects of vomiting, excessive diarrhea, dizziness, among others lead to utter despair. -

No, I don't work here, but I wish I do.
Actually, scratch that. I don't think I'm disciplined enough nor do I have ample self-motivation to tackle research projects. See, I've worked in the hospital setting long enough to condition my brain to follow rules and regulations. OSHA and JCAHO have done their job well and instilled "follow-what-we-say-or-we'll-shut-you-down" mentality in me.
With that said, I just wanna say that our hospital cafeteria food SUCKS!
So, I'm glad that my friend Z works for such a great company. I don't even need to list the numerous benefits by working here, it's consistently been in Forbes' list of top 100 companies to work for.
This cafeteria works like a full-service restaurant: you can choose made to order sushi or pasta. They also have a huge salad and sandwich bar. And if you're craving Chinese food or just a plain old pizza, they have that as well. Don't even bother buying your own drink, they have free iced tea (in 3 different flavors) and coffee.
We talked about our favorite subject: boys. While she was blabbing about the guy from Building 9, I cannot stop interrupting her and raving about my freshly made orechiette pasta with tomatoes, basil , capers, hot chili and tuna chunks. She was just very nonchalant about it.
"oh yeah, they change the menu constantly, but it's still the same food"
I'm like, "what??" no way can you get bored with this food! COOKED IN FRONT OF YOU!
If we were at CPMC, there's hot food that's been sitting in those trays for the last 5 hours.
Don't even get me started about the bay views. Grab a seat by the window and enjoy endless waves of water glittering in the warm sun. It's hypnotizing.
At her building's breakroom: same wrap-around views of the bay too. And I was dumbfounded that Genentech supplied them with their very own espresso machine. HELLO!!!
Would anyone care for a cafe latte? and a sprinkling of cocoa on top , yes?
These Biotech people are so spoiled.
Now...
where do I send my resume??? -

There are NO signs anywhere nor are there any address names or numbers. If this is your first time venturing over there for whatever reason like an interview, go EARLY. Genentech prefers calling their buildings "building 1, building 32, etc." but totally out of sequence numbers IN PLACE OF street names and # addresses. I went to building 5 and next door was building 33. WTF?
My head is still spinning. Again: go early if you have to be there somewhere. -

Review is purely based on ease of locating the campus:
Made 3 U-turns, on the 1 block strip, till I finally had to call the bf to ask where to turn. There are NO signs. Geez, how many billion are they worth and they can't even invest in a damn sign? At least an address.
The parking structure is poorly designed also, but they aren't engineers, they are bio-tech, so I'll give them a break.
Perk for their employees and 1 guest:
30th yr anniversary yesterday, celebrated with a bang by hiring 4 bands-Foo Fighters, Bob Dylan, Black Eyed Peas and the Eagles. Free booze, grub and music? Sweet. They also had fighter jets soar over the venue and blocked off an entire street for the affair. The entire staff of the SSFPD was in force, so if you wanted to commit a crime in So SF, yesterday was the day to do it. -

I have just started working here as a contractor. I really have fallen in love with this campus, it is located for some buildings, next to the bay shoreline. If you eat lunch in Building 4 & 33, you get an amazing view of the bay. Their shuttle buses come about every 5-8 mins, and these buses are super clean and comfortable. I love their cafes always something good on the menu and cheap!!! That is my most favorite thing about working here is the food and I love their soups! Cheddar Beer Soup has become my favorite.
I minus one star because parking can be confusing especially for guests visiting. You need a parking permit and there are certain spots you can only park in. Also there aren't any map on the campus for drivers to find a building, that has got to suck if you need to be at a meeting quick. But in the end I'm a fan of working here. I just wish that contractors were allowed to use the gym for free like the blue badge 'real' Genentech employees. I would love to work out during my lunch hour. *Tear* Oh well that is what my Fitness 19 is for.

Really like working here. What great people, great projects onsite gym, haircuts, dentist, child care, doggy day-care... and good food. Genentech was the #1 place to work at in 2006, then #2 just after Google, then #5 in the US but still #2 in California. If you make the food free like Google... then they get 4 or maybe even 5 stars. :)

I remember some of my friends raving about the breakfast at Genentech (GNE) and I thought i'd just go see if it was really as good as everyone's said and now that i've had it...i must say..... [drum roll] ..... hell ya! it's off the hizzy fo shizzy. don't get me wrong...i mean i had the oatmeal at ucsf...good taste, consistency...and i added my usual brown sugar and raisins to spice it up...but the oatmeal here had it's own lil spunk. they have the plain oatmeal available but they also have ones with organic banana (i know....they couldn't just say regular banana oatmeal, it had to be o r g a n i c... sheesh) ...anyhoo....it was really all about the increased choices of what to add to this bowl of heaven....they had the brown sugar and raisins...but also honey granola, crushed walnuts, and my favorite...craisins. LOL! i know that this is more information than you wanted on their oatmeal, but i thought i'd share in case it would make your day a lil hippity hoppy happier....
as you can tell....they probably also include CRACK on their oatmeal as i can't believe i went on and on about breakfast. ayayayay...Listed in: My Neighborhood
