This review, much like Denver's need for a legit chippy, has been a long time coming.

G&B might not be everyone's place but for me when I'm in the need of fish and chips they do the job perfectly.  1/2 meal of cod and a beer (Boddingtons!!! if I don't mind adding a few bucks or happy hour Piblets) is all that I need from here...sit down, wait and then cover the fries with vinegar and salt upon arrival.

Love the atmosphere, always had great service and honestly all that stops me from coming here more often is its not too close to my place.

**Touch pricey but what fish isn't in Denver- so if anyone can point me to a better fish and chips for less money in Denver I may knock a star off.

GB's Fish and Chips is not the best fish and chips I've had in Denver... They are the best fish and chips I've had ever! The delicious crispy crunch of a perfectly fried cod and steak cut chips combine for a meal of deep fried goodness. Along with their signature fish and chips menu of various fried seafood, they also offer other English specialties such as bangers & mash, pork pies, shepherd's pies, pasties, and more. GB's makes all of these English specialties in-house from scratch - which means they are legit! The food is pretty heavy, so be ready to feel full, sluggish, and satisfied.

Not only is the food a delight to the senses, but the atmosphere emulates a real British sports pub. As a big football (soccer)  fan, I feel right at home among the vast array of jerseys, soccer themed decor, and current soccer games playing on their HDTV's. I love to stop by GB's with a small group of friends when my Premiership team is playing and enjoy  a good meal, good company, and good entertainment.

The service is quick and friendly. Be sure to pick up a sticker from the register when you visit - they're wicked cool - and play a game of darts in the back. GB's Fish and Chips are truly top drawer!

Go Tottenham Hotspurs and stay hungry my friends!

It's a British Style Pub where sports fans will find Soccer... I mean football and rugby playing throughout the restaurant/bar in the Antique District of Broadway.

I ordered a full order of Cod and Chip.  The fish was nice and tender.  Not overcooked and dry or frozen.   I paid about $16 for the full meal that included a drink. It seemed a little steep for what I got, but nevertheless, it was enough food.  It came with six pieces of cod and chips and a drink.   The chips were thick and nicely cooked.  They went great with the tartar sauce, but I have to say two tiny servings of tartar sauce is barely enough.

I didn't like the way the menu was written and it took me a while to figure out what I wanted.  They seemed to break it down by portions and fish types.  But for a fish and chips place seems odd that the chips cost extra unless you buy a meal.  It took me a while to figure that out.  Do people really order fish no chips??? Nice option, but this seems to confuse the entire menu board.

The interior has nice touches of old British Pub Style with with sports memorabilia throughout. Also, the baskets holding the fish look like newspaper the way the British used to serve their fish and chips... Nice touch.

Also, if you are looking for Beer they do have a great happy hour.

They are not messing around. This is pretty good fish. You can have  beer while you wait. There isn't much seating in the winter but it looks like they have a patio in the summer. It's no nonsense so you can get in and get out. Nice people working there too, come to south broadway and save the attitude... Why put up with or have attitude anyway? You live in Denver.

What I had?  3 pc. Cod, chips, and curry

Food review:  A few years ago, I had ventured over to GB Fish and Chips for the first time as it was rated best Fish and Chips in town by Westword that year.  I had the cod and chips and really only found the fish to be so-so.  I decided to give said fish one more try this past week and I was pleasantly surprised that it had tasted much better.  The batter was simply tastier on the cod.  Not sure what happened on the first try.  Outside of that, I have been visiting GB Fish and Chips through out this past year for their chips and curry.  I know that might sound odd to some of you but you have to give it a try sometime.  The curry is wayyy tasty.  I definitely love that combo.

Service? I was a little reluctant to visit this place one more time as there is one person in particular that works there that can make for an awkward experience there.  Granted everybody (even the person being mentioned) is quite friendly but I'd say.. if you can help it.. if said person is working there.. don't sit at "the bar" area.  Otherwise, you might be in for some awkward conversation.  :-s  Outside of that, once again, the service is good.

This place specializes in fish and chips--meaning, get the fried fish.  Don't get the sausages like I did.  And you only get about 2 tbsp of tartar sauce, so you might want to ask for extra up front.

I LOVE this place.  I am very, very grateful that I don't live any closer to this place or else I'd either have a heart attack or have to be rolled about like Violet Beauregard.

Because of my distance, I will freely admit that I have not sampled anything on the menu other than the cod and chips.  That being said, I don't really have any deep, burning desire to broaden my culinary horizons here, which is really rare for me!  The crust on the cod is always perfectly crunchy and the fish moist and flaky.  They are good enough to have malt vinegar for you to douse everything with, too, which makes everything even better.

The atmosphere is nice, too - ostensibly, it's common-style seating where you can share tables as needed and it can be an interesting way to meet new people.

    It's perfectly-fried, terrible-for-you eats.  What's not to like?

My husband and I have been regulars here for some time. We haven't come here as often as we did at one time but we still loved the food until our most recent visit.

Saturday late afternoon and we decide it had been too long since we had some GB Fish and Chips. We were so disappointed with this trip.

We both ordered the 1/2 meal combination. This combination comes with scallops, calamari, shrimp. tilapia and cod. The best part for me is the scallops, calamari and shrimp. They were all over cooked. The scallops and calamari were so over cooked you could not tell what the meat was inside. The scallops had been reduced to the size of a pea they were so over cooked. Who ever was manning the fryer should have come out apologized for the delay and redone the food. There is no excuse for letting food that poorly prepared come out to a customer.

They also reduced the drink size that comes with the meal. I get times are tough but they aren't that tough that you should be shorting your customers on a soft drink. Seriously!

I don't know if we caught them on a bad day or what but Wow has the quality gone down hill. I truly hope that this was just a bad day because I would hate to scratch them off my personal list of some of my favorite places to grab lunch.

Until this visit I would have given them 5 stars.

If you want a good taste of fish and chips. This is the place to go.  I have only had the cod but it is delicious.  One nice thing about this restaurant is that they batter the fish to order so you know that it is going to be nice and crispy.
The atmosphere is really cool as well, especially if you are a soccer fan.  If there is a soccer game going on you know that it will be on one of the tv's.  Also, there is memorabilia adorning the walls and ceiling which I think is cool.
It get a little pricy sometimes, for 3 pieces of cod and chips is 10 bucks, but if you feel like having a good meal it is definitely worth the money.

Best comfort food in Denver, bar none. I've had almost everything on the menu, aside from the scallops but I can't imagine they'd be anything less than the rest of what they serve. The squid is my favorite. If you want a super traditional meal, the cod and the chips is the way to go. It won't disappoint.

I always get a 1/2 order, and anyone I've ever gone with has always gotten a 1/2 order as well. It's enough food, trust me. More than enough. Unless you really, really think you can eat 12 pieces of fish, AND all your tasty chips. Your call. Most of the complaints I see about pricing on here have to do with the full order sizes, but you don't need all that, really you don't.

It's greasy and crispy and melt in your mouth buttery good. The ambiance is right on point, and it's always fun during a game. But there are quiet times too.

My only complaints are that I wish they stayed open later, and I wish they gave you more tartar sauce damn it! I HATE having to get up in the middle of my meal to get another ketchup packet sized serving of tartar sauce (which is really good). I don't want to feel like I have to ration my tartar sauce the whole time. I want to just dump it all over my food and be done.

    GB's is truly great.

Having a British husband living here for 3 years we are not quite sure how we have never gone out for Fish and Chips! We remedied that this week at GB. I have to admit I had a "duh moment" as it took me a minute or so to realize what GB stands for. I actually thought it was CB Fish and Chips but realized i was confusing it with CBGB! Anyhoo....

We walked in unsure of what to expect - it is completely casual with long communal tables. We were greeted by a staff who explained all of the selections to us and then laughed when my husband opened his mouth.

We each ordered the 3 pieces of cod with the chips to go - it stayed crisp as we got it home - about a 10 minute drive. One note: if you get a to go order be sure to ask for extra vinegar, tartar and lemon as those portions were on the small side. There was a generous helping of chips, the batter was crisp and the fish was moist. I also loved that they have strawberry soda "on tap".  Happy Hour includes .75 PBR - can't beat it. There is also a good selection of GB beer and other traditional favorites such as pastys. One disappointing note - the beans are American- try a different side.

Pricing is around $10 for each meal so not terribly expensive for the portion size we got. Will definitely be headed back to try some of their other offerings. Look forward to trying the ice cream cone with wafer at their other location as well.

Optimus has spent much time in England. Years, in fact. One thing I know:  the fish in Fish'n'Chips is supposed to be cod. Could be pollock or haddock, but mainly you want cod. The firm yet flaky texture, delicate flavor, alabaster whiteness - it's all in there, baby. That's what you want. And GB does it friggin right.

I don't know if GB is the owner's initials or just stands for 'Great Britain' - if it does, then they're certainly fulfilling they're obligation to reputation. The chips are just the right thickness: crisp on the outside and proper mash-like consistency on the inside. And of course, there's malt vinegar, salt, and pepper on every table. However, for those who crave it, they do throw some tartar sauce in each basket; if you're just way too used to American bar food, they also have coleslaw and backyard baked beans, both of which are rather good. For a little more, you can get a delicious warm curry dipping sauce, reminiscent of the Indian and Muslim corner shops in the UK.

I have one gripe, though, and I'm not going to take a star off for it because the food they make is consistently phenomenal. The thing is, this place actually serves pasties and bangers'n'mash, yet they don't have British baked beans! Why the hell not? I'd much rather have British baked beans (the green Heinz can is a very popular import at Autobot home base) with my British breakfast, lunch, and dinner than American baked beans! I mean, I like both, but each has its place and shouldn't be inter-changeable. Just like I don't like replacing my refried beans with black beans as a 'healthy' option every Mexican joint seems to offer now. Screw that - give me what your mother intended, not what choice you think I want.

Anyway, no points off, because it all really is delicious. (But add British beans, and I'll find a way to rate this place 6 stars - I mean it.)

    Optimus OI and OUT!

Tried to go out on a budget and did a search of some of the most frequented restaurants under 10 bucks and found GB Fish and Chips.  Don't let the single $ fool you because I ended up paying 16 bucks for a full meal of fried cod (six pieces) with 'chips' and a soda.  IMO, that was a little too much for just a basket of fried food...don't get me wrong, the fish was delicious but was it worth that much?  Not really.

There's also this menacing sign not to park in the Winchell's parking spots without buying a donut.  I kept an eye on my car during the entire meal wondering if I'd be booted or towed.

Every time I eat at GB's I ask myself why I don't eat there more often!  Everything is very fresh and cooked when ordered, so your fried delights (I almost always go for the cod) arrive extra crispy and piping hot.  I love biting into the crunchy, pillowy coating to find the moist and flaky fish inside.  Since they opened several years ago they have changed the cut, so in a half-order you get three finger-like pieces rather than two planks, but that's OK, it's still plenty of food and I always leave satisfied.

I've noticed other reviewers comment on the small portions of tarter sauce, so if you're a fan just ask for another cup (which holds about 1 1/2 T.)

I should mention their sausage too.  I've never ordered it to eat onsite, but I'll take a package home now and then to cook later.  They're British in influence, too, with a grain filler added to the meat.  The result is a very savory, pate-like texture that makes it awesome in to bite into ... yummy stuff!

This place is like walking into another world. It's off Broadway across from a pot shop and a doughnut shop. You walk into this place it feels welcoming and also like a sports bar right out of the UK.

Now I lived on a coast for most of my life, so I'm kinda picky about fresh fish. This place did not disappoint. I got fried scallops, which if you haven't had them from a fish and chips place taste like a ball of fat soaked in butter and coated in thick bread...then fried. Which in my book is amazing. I highly recommend them. My friend had shrimp and they were pretty great as well.

If you're in the area this is a must try for sure. The menu is simple, the prices are fair when you see how much food you get, soccer is playing in the background and there's a ton of beer on tap.

I cannot BELIEVE I have forgotten to review GB's until now.

This place has reached "Institution" status in just a few short years for one reason:  the food is AWESOME!  Light, crispy, flash-fried top quality fish that is consistently perfect.

I can't drive past GB's without getting a hankering for the grub there.  I must admit that all I have had is the Cod.  It was so good the first time I had it that I can't bring myself to order anything else off the menu.

The staff is enthusiastic and friendly and you will get a real sense that they are proud to serve the food that they serve.  They KNOW you are going to like it.

Atmosphere is important, too.  GB's nailed it.  I love the park benches but I usually belly up the small bar area.  I'm not a soccer guy but, if I were, I would practically live at GB's.  They embrace the sport there.

    Fun, fast and YUMMY!

Can you say grease overload?! I couldn't even finish my half order. I had a very guilty feeling the whole time I was there eating! They really should use real newspaper to server up the fish & chips, not fake! But what I did eat was pretty good. The cod was nice and crispy, I really liked the batter. There was just enough on the fish too. The cod was tender and flaky, the way it should be. The fries were pretty good too, but I'm not a huge fan of the steak like fry. I wish they would give more tarter too. For the portion of fish you get, I used up all the tarter on 1 piece. My husband had Shepherd's pie. He won't eat fish at all. It was disappointing. It was served in the microwave plastic thing they heat it up in. Boo. I was expecting more of a pub like feel too.

I'm glad I finally got to try GB's, I've had it bookmarked forever!  If I ever feel the urge to overindulge in a bad for you meal, I know right where to go!

When my wife first told me she that wanted to go try GB's, I whined that I hated fish and that she was only making me go there as a way to penalize me for leaving the toilet seat up TWICE that day.

    I was wrong! (partly)

This place ROCKS! The food is alway piping hot. The fish is fresh with an excellent crunchy outer layer that isn't overly oily. The "chips" are perfect and they aren't "potato chips" or "little dinky french fries".

I spent quite a bit of time in Europe, and had fish and chips in Ireland, London, and all over the place, and these are the best I've had!  Absolutely perfect...right out of the fryer.

I got the 1/2 order full meal, with cod.  It was PLENTY of food...I left there stuffed after three pieces of fish, and a good serving of fries.

I felt a bit like Mrs. Lovett whilst selecting my meat pie from the menu, but my search for fingers within was fruitless...

No pretension about this small and very basic Broadway jewel where you can get some perfectly prepared cod or a pork pie. My husband opted for the former, I selected the latter, and both of us were totally pleased with our meals. I particularly liked the portion size of the pork pie with a single side and a beverage - it was just enough to be filling without pushing the limit. Husband got a 1/2-full meal of the cod which was more than enough with the fries.

In short: do NOT reduce yourself to going to Long John Silver's just because they have paper hats for the kiddos. Take them hear to get some far better fish fare and enjoy a PBR or a Boddingtons while they oooh-aaah over the jerseys hanging from the ceiling.

I'll preface this review by saying I am from Toronto and the fish and chips there are arguably the best outside of the UK. I've also traveled in the UK and Ireland and so I am rather picky when it comes to fish and chips. I must say, GB's does it right. I always get the 1/2 order full meal with "combo" which includes cod, tilapia, scallops, prawn, and squid. It's lovely and fresh and hot and with a little bit of tartar sauce and lots of ketchup on the chips...perfection. The service is always friendly and laid-back, as is the atmosphere. It really feels like a bit of England stuck in the middle of Denver. I'm proud to drive around with a GB sticker on my car!

Great fish and chips, which is fortunate since that's the name of the place! You order at the counter, there's a selection of fried fish and beers. The small/medium is big enough for two to share, which is what we did. Food comes up pretty quick and then you seat yourself.

Appreciate that the fish is moist, not too oily and not too much breading. The chips were nice and thick. Overall very delicious!

Been going here for a couple of years now, and even though it's now 16 miles away from me, I WILL drive that in rush hour to get my fix.
Have tried the cod, tilapia, salmon and halibut (when they have it), but by far will ALWAYS go for my cod fix here.  Great relaxed atmosphere, sit next to the pickled eggs and enjoy a beer if you'd like.

Fantastic!! Coworker suggested we hit this place up today for lunch and man am I glad she did!

Had the 1/2 meal cod & chips. Perfect tender flaky fish in some of the best batter I've ever had. Not too greasy but greasy enough and oh so crunchy perfect and golden brown. Nice thick chips with that crisp outside and tender inside. A good shower of malt vinegar and some ketchup and I ate the whole works. I don't know who could eat a full meal because I am STUFFED. Can't wait to go back for dinner and have a beer!

Great service. Friendly and good about checking in and asking how everything was. I like that.

Now, I'm a Yorkshire girl. I grew up in Harrogate, I've eaten at the Magpie in Whitby, and during school we'd all pop over to the chippie for chips with curry sauce- it's in my blood.

GB Fish and Chips was one of the better fish and chip places I've been to in the United States, but I was troubled by a couple of things. First, I asked if they had mushy peas (no) and baked beans (yes), so I ordered baked beans. Imagine my surprise when my fish came accompanied by barbecue (American style) baked beans- not Heinz-style beans in tomato sauce. I was really hoping for a more British style chip shop, but the only British offerings are the actual fish and chips.

On to the good- the fish was well cooked. It was flaky, the batter was crisp and similar to good old English chip shop fish. It didn't come in one piece (as you'd be served in the UK), and the chips weren't really chips (just steak fries- I don't think they cut their own chips in house), but they were tasty and I drowned them in vinegar to induce some sogginess. There were football kits on the ceiling, I heard reggae and Oasis on the stereo, and the staff were very friendly. If I were an American who'd maybe been to the UK once or twice, I'm sure I'd be pretty pleased.

As a girl from the UK, it's close, but without the real chip shop additions (curry sauce, mushy peas, Heinz baked beans), I'll probably just pick up fish from here to bring home - then make my own chips, curry sauce, and mushy peas. Guess I'll have to wait until my next trip home to fulfill my craving.

It was pretty tasty for fish & chips.  Pretty quick service too.  I thought I read a prior review saying it was not greasy..............it is greasy.  It is cod that is breaded and deep fried...........that is what makes it so good I guess.  Anyway, I will definitely be back.

Next time I might have to try something else just for why not.

Oh, 1 point for you future GB goers.............if you are two people or more, get the large order and split it and it will save you a couple of bucks.  My friend and I each ordered a half order when we could have gone halfsies.  This is where I wish the counter person was thinking and would have made the suggestions as I clearly was not thinking at the time.

Some of the best fish&chip  in town.  Everyone we take there loves the place and always wants to go back. The  Codfather of Denver!

    Good stuff here!

Had a half cod order with chips. Should have ordered another side, I'm not a fan of steak fries, but that's just me. Really good fish and not a lot of breading.

    I'll be back for sure.

Great fish and chips! My only complaints are the chips and the fact that I now live 2 blocks from this place. Every lunch/dinner at my house is a struggle to decide between fish and chips or something else. Damn you GB!

The chips are kind of inconsistent in my opinion. I've had em soft and soggy or hard and undercooked. But even when they are cooked right they're just not that great. Frankly I'm not a fan of the thick, streak fry size of these chips. I know that's the traditional way to have them but I prefer a thinner version. Or if they served sweet potato chips that was be killer.

And the tartar sauce is good but they give you a rain drop sized portion of it that results in leaving everything else covered in vinegar and ketchup. More tartar sauce please!

I went here with a friend one afternoon when we were feeling peckish... and I was impressed with the fish selection.  I've spent plenty of time in the UK eating fish and chips from all points, and I have to say GB's batter rates up there with the real deal.

The cod, for me, is the way forward for sure.  Their chips are great -- not fried in lard, unfortunately, but nice (I had to leave some in the basket because I was stuffed -- uncomfortably so after two pieces of fish and most of the fries).  I don't really go for tartar sauce myself -- being a purist, I'm strictly for the malt vinegar and salt, but that being said, my friend wanted more... she was able to get a free second serving just by asking (you can pay for a side order of about 1/4 c of sauce.  Blech)... maybe learn to live without if you're a tartar sauce fan?

One thing I'd love to see on the menu is mushy peas.  C'mon, guys -- no respectable chippy wouldn't offer them as a side.  One of my other favorite F&C stops is A Salt and Battery in NYC -- it would be awesome if GB offered freshly fried desserts, too (AS&B has snickers and some battered fruit... bananas maybe?) -- I mean, once you've started, why not go all the way towards clogging those arteries?

I love the beer garden benches inside... and the fact that they serve beer is a major plus.  I'll have to try the location on my side of town -- it looks less charming than the b'way location, but I'm dying to have a pork pie.

I went to a fish and chips place and ordered a pasty. That's just how I roll. What's a pasty you may be asking? That's okay, I had to ask, too. I would describe it as a Pot Pie without the liquid meets a calzone. It's shaped sort of like a mini Calzone and full of meat, potatoes, and carrots and served with some sort of sauce on the side. And it was pretty good. Without the sauce it's a little dry so you have to like the sauce or you probably won't like the food.

Other than that they have a wide variety of fish for your fish and chips. You can even get calamari. And they have wines and beers. Hooray!

The atmosphere here is way casual. There are benches and long tables, a dartboard, reggae music and a patio. Don't come expecting anything fancy or even "pub-like" in the environment and you won't be disappointed.

I also thought it was cool how they use wax paper with newspaper design rather than real newspaper. I don't like the way the print rubs off on me and I thought it was just clever.

I am a sticker slut. If there is free sticker to be had, its new home must be on my fridge in the basement. You are too, if you have a second, out-of-the-way fridge, just admit it.

Deep fried fishes and chips. I am not a fan of thick fries...I know, I know, I have spent enough time in the UK to get a taste for them, but just can't. There is a delicate balance those little potato pieces that I believe is difficult to achieve. IMHO. The fishes though, super fresh and hot, hot, hot. The shrimp, crisp and succulent.

This really is not all that on the cheap side. But I should give it one more star for the 75 cent PBRs during happy hour and all the proper European football swag.

I am convinced that an accent makes up for a whole lotta ugly and I just expect a sweaty, toothless bloke to walk in the door with cleats. Sorry, that was my outside voice.

"In Cod We Trust" - I think I've found religion! My husband suggested we try GB Fish & Chips since we were on our way to the Mac Outlet (great place to buy/sell Mac stuff). I was enthusiastic as he never suggests a place for lunch unless he's seen good to great reviews. I was a bit apprehensive as, well lets face it, "fish and chips" means fried, greasy and fattening. I'm not prude when it comes to eating tasty high calorie delights but for me fish 'n chips is right up there with KFC - a guilty pleasure that I only allow myself once or twice a year.

As soon as we got out of the car we could smell the food awaiting us - not in a bad (burnt oil and fishy fish) way but in a really good way which I'm not sure I can adequately describe.

This place is obviously a favorite of many people, given the fact that all tables were full, and it was almost two in the afternoon. Most patrons looked like they do not feel the least bit guilty about eating a basket full of fried fish and french fries. A few actually looked like they had just stepped off a fishing boat (in Denver??).

We decided to split the basic meal - Cod and chips. Fried Tilapia, prawns, oysters, squid, scallops or a combination of all of the above are also available however we believed the true test to be how good the Cod is. And it's good...really, really good. Large pieces of moist, flaky fish in a perfect crispy batter. Fried, but not overly greasy (the bottom of the basket had no grease puddles) this was the best fried fish I've had in a very long time. The "chips" were hot and good, but not really very special. I would have preferred a rough-cut, crisper potato, but this did not prevent me from loving this place.

The restaurant itself was pleasant and well lit. I loved the fact that the kitchen - clean and within view - a plus when the everything you're eating comes out of a deep fat fryer.

The gal who took our order was very friendly - she's obviously very proud of this establishment and she wanted to make sure that we enjoyed our experience - including the "Cheers!" when we left.

Although we filled ourselves I never had that "oh my god, I'm stuffed" feeling. Nor did I have that "greasy food" hangover that often occurs several hours later.

I wouldn't eat here every week (although I'd be tempted) but I'll definitely be back.
