2 reviews for Gateway National Recreation Area
Something must be wrong with my New Jersey DNA, because I effing hate "The Shore". All those B&T's from NYC and PA can take it, as far as I'm concerned. Just leave me Gateway National Recreation Area -- a.k.a. Sandy Hook -- and I'll be pleased as punch.
The National Park Service has done a tremendous job of cleaning up this place. So good, as a matter of fact, that when I'm riding along the 14 miles of bike paths, I forget I'm in New Jersey.
Besides the aforementioned bike paths, there's the beach, Fort Hancock, a lighthouse, and, uh, Gunnison Beach -- the largest "clothing optional" recreational facility in the area. There are also intact remnants of a Nike Defense Missile installation at various points along the hook, not to mention plenty of sightseeing and birdwatching opportunities. In short, Sandy Hook has a lot to offer beyond sitting on the sand.
Stick to the official beaches, and avoid the inlet. It isn't maintained by the National Park Service, and from the amount of trash and crap there, you can clearly smell, I mean, tell.
Final word of advice: places like Sandy Hook don't come by very often, so treat it as you would a newborn baby! Take your trash home with you and be responsible!

Gateway National Recreation Area is a pretty decent park, the Sandy Hook area in the atlantic highlands area of new jersey. It's really worth seeing If youre in the area. there is a cool lighthouse and some of 1800's barracks for you to check out. there's a (boring) guided tour that takes you through some buildings and so forth. otherwise you can stroll around. you go out and climb on top of one of the batteries and you can get a really great view of new york city.
