I've been a longtime Gateway user. I got my first Gateway, an E-3200, in 1997. In 2003, I bought a 500X. In 2006, I bought a GT4010. In 2007, I bought an MT6840. A month ago, I bought a refurbished DX4710. I also own a Gateway-branded NEC 15" flat panel and an FPD1760 monitor. You can see where this is going.
I must have pretty good luck with my Gateways because all except the 500X and GT4010 are still chugging along perfectly. Gateway would have earned extra points with me had they opted to install case fans in the 500X and GT4010, which would have made those two systems last to this day. Alas, Gateway didn't install case fans in these models, and mine no longer work because they overheated. Believe me: I'm the kind of guy who cleans the dust out of his computer case every 6 weeks. If my systems are still overheating with that kind of regular maintenance, that says a lot. Heck...I replaced the GT4010 with a smaller HP DC5700 SFF unit, and even it didn't have as many heat issues as the GT4010.
I have been mostly satisfied with Gateway, but their product quality has visibly declined since they became a part of eMachines and Acer. The GT4010 I purchased was manufactured post-eMachines, and I had all kinds of problems with it right out of the box. For starters, the onboard NIC card had somehow gotten fried, and trying to install drivers wouldn't help. That means I got to turn it over to Gateway for repair straight out of the box. When I got my computer back, the case looked as if everyone at the factory had lined up with a baseball bat and had fun taking swings at the case. I don't know what it is with these tech support places that beat the heck out of your computer when you send it back for repair, but Gateway seems to operate one of them. I like my computer cases to be in flawless condition, and that's an impossible feat when the tech support people don't respect your belongings.
Let's fast-forward to my most recent purchase of a Gateway DX4710. This system has restored my faith in Gateway in being able to make a quality product. Straight out of the box, I upgraded the RAM from 6 to 8 GB and put in a 1 GB graphics card. Factor in the Core 2 Quad processor, and this thing flies. I can run all kinds of Adobe programs and plenty popular games on this system without any sort of lag. My modified DX4710 is what the LX6810 would have been if Gateway had opted to install--you guessed it--a case fan to prevent overheating.
-1 for Gateway's destructive tech support facilities and failing to install 80mm case fans in their system for heat exhaust. Seriously, Gateway--case fans can be had for as little as $2 a pop. As a major computer company, Gateway can probably get them for less than that in bulk. At that price, not installing a case fan in your computers IS a sign of being cheap! -

Let me start this by saying Gateway's Rules. I can't believe I am running a 6 year old laptop, and getting Tech support on it 3 years out of warranty. I also can't believe I'm admitting it in my first review. People are going to think I'm a bologna eating shit pants going for this and not a restaurant....not true. Gateway has karma so here you go
So, this turkey with the 6 year old laptop, should we listening to him? You decide~
1st. In 2002 I spent some time shopping and went with Gateway Laptop a Pentium 4, 1.4 GHz processor. Still hot solid silver. Still fast and only until 2008 and Vista will I be getting a new, w/ dual core processor. 2nd they gave me a 3 year warranty, which I thought was plenty long. In my mind I was going to buy a new laptop every three years, as technology and software advanced. 3rd and lastly, they offer me out of warranty support this second weekend in 2008. (This is my first review so it helps to use numbers for my points, what a dork)
A. The call that saved my baby started with NOT listening to my drunk (football watching) buddies, as they tried to give me a 1 Gig stick of memory that would have burnt my mother board. 1-800-Gateway My serial number that I have memorized over the years.
B. A Tech that listened to me, and my drunken buddies in the background, and patched me through to a Technician, without charging me.
C. The Technician that took 15 minuets and found that even though the maximum spec limit online said that two 512 cards equaling 1 gig total was max, that I could 2 1 gigs for a total of 2 gigs! But more importantly, that stick that my buddy had, and was trying to push on me would have ruined my motherboard.
God bless you for reading all of this. I wouldn't have -

Its the end of February 2009. And Gateway Computer has been screwing me over since December 2008. Having purchased tens of thousands of dollars of equipment for my job in Silicon Valley, I have never received such piss poor support as I am presently getting from Gateway Computer. I purchased one of their 30" HD displays model XHD3000 and it blacked out every hour. So I called them for a replacement and after telling me to try other computers (because I have spare computers to test their broken crap) and after screwing around with me for a week, they told me to send it back and they would replace it.
Well, I'll just STARE AT THE WALL for two weeks while they wait for the return and ship out a replacement on the slow boat from China. I had to purchase a second one on my credit card so that I would have a monitor to use and not miss any work.
Well, guess what? The replacement monitor is also defective. Apparently this is a known defect as you can google the XHD3000 and find thousands of people who have the same problem with their Gateway products that were manufactured in the first half of 2008.
It gets better. They won't even talk to me without the serial #. The serial # is printed on the back of the mounted monitor and in 6 point font. Well, I got a magnifying glass and gave it to them. Now they tell me its invalid. After screwing me over for another week, they asked for a photo of the serial #. Don't know what the point is as the font is too small to be photographed with anything but a Macro lens. So I guess I need to keep a spare computer, a camera, a macro lens and a magnifying glass just so that I can get Gateway's miserable tech support department to start to provide service.
After almost two months now, they have not even started to assist me. This is the first and last Gateway product that I ever buy. Their product is defective, and they know it, yet they continue to sell it to this day. Even more so, the OBSTRUCTIVE attitude of their tech support department is reminiscent of the phone company. I hope that someone is able to file a class action law suit against them for shipping defective product and not servicing their product in good faith! GATEWAY STINKS!
