Have been here a few years and absolutely love the location. I agree with Stuart G. -- I've never ONCE heard a neighbour in the almost 3 years I've been here. The leasing agents are spectacular. The one slag I do have probably shouldn't be a slag, but travelling elsewhere and staying with relatives, I'm annoyed that their place isn't as convenient as the Gateway is.

I do maintain a car for going away for day trips, and so pay for parking. I do wish the street were wider, but that's just a pipe dream around here.

I can't say enough good things about it. Every visitor who comes loves it, every time I go away, I miss it. I love this place and hope to be staying here for many years to come.

Gateway is not perfect, but it's a great place to call home in perhaps the best location in the heart of the city. It's perfect for a corporate rental. We've stayed here part-time more than 2 years and I recommend it.

Pros: Views (depending on apartment), location, structure, staff. The window in our old unit looked out to the Embarcadero Center, but if we stood at the window or on the balcony, we had a postcard view of the Ferry Building and Bay Bridge. However, the unit faced south/southwest, and it was always too warm and stuffy, and we heard a lot of traffic and construction noise. We asked the leasing agent, Rivera, to keep an eye out for a quieter, cooler unit, and within a few weeks she found us the perfect place facing north. You can only move within the building if you get a more expensive unit, but the cost difference was minor. And it's rent controlled - yay!
The location couldn't be better for us. Hubby walks to work in the heart of FiDi on Montgomery. We can walk to SOMA, Ferry Building, Chinatown, Union Square and North Beach. BART/MUNI and Market St. buses and F are a few blocks away. Safeway is right downstairs in the complex, and we're right next to Embarcadero Center shopping, movies, theater, comedy club, dining, etc.
The apartments are laid out well (some have a lot of storage) and the buildings are solid - I rarely hear neighbors. I've only heard noise if they're building an IKEA dresser or something, or if the maintenance crew is working in the upstairs unit. Someone's cigarette smoke does drift in through the vents, though. It's usually only at night, but still sucks. I've never seen one bug here, anywhere, besides the occasional fly that gets in through an open window.
Most staff is pleasant and helpful. Our doorman, who works noon-8 p.m., is awesome. He always opens the door when he sees someone coming, and he's just the sweetest guy. The 24-hour staff is available, well, 24-7, no problem. The maintenance crew is stellar. They come quickly for every call. And like I said, Rivera was outstanding in helping us get a different unit. There's one old crabass in the leasing office; you'll know who I mean. Avoid her and you should be fine.

Cons: The building is more than 40 years old, so the cabinets have a musty smell and are not in the greatest shape. However, our appliances are new and in perfect condition. The bathtubs are old and small. Our old unit had a pedestal sink - ugh, nowhere to rest makeup, brush, etc. (try to get a unit with a full vanity).
No in-unit washer/dryer, and you know what that means. Sometimes the machines in the basement are full. Sometimes they leak all over the floor. Sometimes there's gum in the dryers. But mostly, the room is kept in good condition despite the tenants.
We are now in one of the smaller towers, so we hear the elevator at all times of day and night. This wasn't an issue in the larger tower if you're down the hall.
Since it's old, something is always in the process of maintenance, meaning noise and inconvenience. On the plus side, it's nice that they do keep things up.
No fitness room, pool clubhouse, etc. - there's a small, cramped fitness club in one of the towers with pool, tennis courts, etc. across the street, but it's expensive to join. Rooftop deck is OK, but basic. No pets.

Overall, your happiness here will undoubtedly depend on what your priorities are. If you love the location, like we do, and are in a good unit, like we are, you will probably be able to overlook the minor details. If you want something more modern with more amenities, or conversely, with Victorian charm in a quaint little neighborhood, then no.

Views Views Views!, Spacious, bright, 2 bdr 2 bath apartment on a high floor with amazing views of Coit Tower and the Bay from the very large living room and both bedrooms.

I don't understand all of the bad reviews. This place is rent controlled, the walls are made of concrete and I've never once hear a neighbor - above, below, or adjacent.

I would stay if I could but it's time to save .... The really sad part is that I know I'll never find a spot like this at this price again (now 2,979 plus $100 parking - you have to negotiate the latter)

Location - walk to North Beach, Ferry building, Embarcadero, it's all here.

I lived here for a year from June 2005-June 2006.

PROS:  The location was perfect for my two block commute to the Embarcadero Center.  The 4 high rise apartment buildings and condo units are all connected by a third floor outdoor courtyard.  And the courtyard is connected by these overpasses to the Maritime building and subsequently connected to the Embarcadero Centers. So I never commuted on the surface streets, and that cut down my walk time by a good 6 minutes.

Once you move in on a lease, your renewals will contain a fairly minimal increase due to RENT CONTROL (yippie!).  I recommend people who are looking to live here in the long term to lock-in a lease while the base rate is low.

The amount of space for a 2BR, 1BA apartment with storage is generous for a financial district apartment.

The door people are so friendly! They undoubtedly recognize their residents and open the door for you immediately.  They are available 10am-7PM, 7 days a week to pick up your packages.

There is a lobby phone that directly connects to the taxi cab service.  The cabs are here within 5 minutes.  This is especially important during cab rush hour.

CONS:  The appliances stink. For the rent you pay and the chi-chi location, you would think that you get stainless steel appliances, marble/granite tops, and updated fixtures...but the appliances, fixtures, rinky-dink office carpet are tolerable. Beware, the ceiling is made of ASBESTOS coated with many layers of paint to prevent the ASBESTOS from being airborne.  Regardless, it's a risky health hazard.

Besides the most abominable roommate experience, the leasing agents are all drama mamas, and the administration/management is not communicative or reliable. The administrative office has the worst attitude and terrible track record for following up on requests. They really need a new manager to whip everyone in shape and be customer service oriented.

For the expensive monthly parking fee of $225 (now it's $275) in a gated garage, I had my car broken into twice in a month. No one ever pays to have their car broken into. And in one of the cases, 8 vehicles were broken into in one evening.  When I asked for a copy of the police report filed by management for all the victims, they refused to give the victims a copy. How messed up is that? Again, this is indicative of poor customer service, and they are not there to support and help their residents. For over hundreds of parking spots worth $275/month for the first car and $325/month for the second car, you would think management could collect enough to install a security system to protect blatant break-ins. From this standpoint, maybe it's an insider job...who knows...speculation.

I think from my personal experience, my rent would have been better spent in the newer SOMA apartments with gym and pool provided with rent and outdoor grilling allowed.

Early January I found out that work was moving me down to SF. Mid January I came, I saw, and I conquered. Spending two days touring 12 different complexes, I finally decided on the "DuB G."  The place is not the most expensive I toured and had the best location if you are working in the financial district.  My office is up by union square and its a ten minute walk.

The views are great, waking up in the morning to a great view is like being on vacation everyday. The apartments are nice for being 40 years old. All the units I toured had new carpet and appliances.

There is a safeway downstairs and with such a centralized location, you can walk anywhere.

One thing that gets me is how HOT the building gets. When I am home I have to leave my balcony door open. Life is tough.

Petra the leasing agent was nice and helpful...something I didn't really see outside of the nice new apartments in SOMA.

1 bedroom apartment $2,100 rent, $275 for parking (one car)

    Pros:
    -  What are the 3 rules of real estate? 1)LOCATION 2)LOCATION 3)LOCATION! I could walk to work...Honestly thats what made it for me!
    -  With in 5 blocks, Safeway, Starbucks, Dry Cleaners, Bart, Ferry building etc etc
    -  Spacious apartment with patio and a lot of storage space
    -  Front desk employee Roy (Dana Building) is great!

    Cons:
    - Leasing office, Petra is horrible. Very unresponsive.
    - Everyone is old
    - With in two weeks of living here I already had a noise complaint. By the time I moved out (lived here just over a year) I had gotten around 6 noise complaints. And I'm not a loud person- everyone is just old in the building.
    - Everything closes in the Financial District very early....and most places not open on weekends.

Overall, I liked living here but would not recommend it for a young person like myself who is new to the city. If you work in the FiDi though, it is pretty sweet to walk to work!

We were at GGA for almost 1.5 years, and this place was super groovy. All the cabinets were 70's style, and there was a ton of avocado accents in the hallways. Maybe the color is soothing or something.

We stayed on the 15th floor at 550 Battery, directly across from Transamerica Building and a giant advertisement that stayed lit until around 3 AM. First day, we walked out onto the balcony and said, "Ooh, look! A fire station! At least we'll be safe if there's a fire!" and right on queue, the sirens started up and never went off the entire 18 months we were there... But we got used to it.

Bonus points for having a grocery store on the bottom floor, a Bank of America right out of the front door, and easy access to the Embarcadero Theater (along with various restaurants). The tip for not paying a huge rent is to take an apartment facing away from the water.. I think we paid about $600 less than other similar units, and we could see a sliver of the Bay, Coit Tower, and a beautiful cityscape of geometric houses and buildings. Sunsets were awesome since we faced west.

I've lived here for at least 5 years ( you would think we'd get some kind of incentive) and it's overall a great place! Great location, great building, great staff! Pretty quiet on the weekends! I can't stress enough about how it's close to EVERYTHING!! There is the Embarcadero; which has shopping, a theater, selection of coffee shops and restaurants! There's a variety of places to go get your hair cut, ferry building (farmers market) is so close, Safeway, parks..you get my point! Living in downtown and  having a car can be a nightmare, but you have the option to join Zipcar!! (car sharing) Best idea ever!!! It's so convenient when you need to take a quick trip to Costco or Target!

Some down sides to living here are that there aren't great amenities such as gym membership ( even residential discount membership is outrageous), homeless people, and there are a ton of old people that live here! Which I don't understand why they would live so high up because when we have fire alarm/drills, we're not allowed to take elevators, only stairs! Rent could be a bit much ( the higher you're up the more you're paying for the view), but right now the rent prices aren't at all bad!

    To the Golden Gateway Management:
Get me a good deal on a gym membership, preferably access to the tennis court, and you might get that last star!! :^))

The location is great, and that's basically all that is good about this place. Which is a big factor, as I worked in the pyramid, so work was only 2 blocks away. But I would definitely never live here again, because:

    - Car Break-Ins. The maintenance (? I'm not sure exactly what they do, they're a bunch of guys south of the border if you know what I mean) broke into my car, didn't find anything they liked, and then used one of my golf clubs to break into another car nearby. None of the security people helped me at all, and I bet those 'maintenance' guys are still there, lurking. This happened to other residents that lived here too.

    - Rent. I rented a studio, and at the end of the month (including parking, and all utilities and everything) my rent was $2500. This place is supposed to be rent-controlled?

    - Quiet...sort of. Another reviewer mentioned the garbage trucks. Holy s*#t!! There's no a/c, so I'd leave the big sliding glass door/window open for some cool air (it gets REALLY hot and mucky here in the summer); and every morning I'd here a garbage truck roll by- man the noise must echo or something cause it's crazy loud!

    - While I lived there they were doing a bunch of construction, which was very loud. We had to keep our windows closed some days or chemicals would get into our apartments. I think the residents ended up suing management/owners, after I had moved I got a letter in the mail about this.

Only good thing: location. Everything else: bad. There are plenty of other nice places to live in SF, or just outside SF, that have much more to offer for a better price.

    **ZERO STARS**

Preface: This is not a review of the facilities, but of the leasing agent.

After my tour (which was lovely), I provided my credit card number to place a hold on a unit. I was clearly told that no charge would be made as long as I made a leasing decision by the end of the day. Three hours later I called PJ, telling her that I would not be leasing. 5 days later I discovered a $500 debit from Gateway Apartments! The next day I found a $500 credit. The following day I found another $500 debit!

BEWARE - DO NOT PROVIDE ANY BANK ACCOUNT INFORMATION.

    Bleh.

That's all i have to say about Golden Gateway. I mean I would give it one star if it wasn't for the location in the FiDi. The rent was outrageous, and so was the parking for one car, but then again, like I said before, the location is killer.

    Tips and Pointers:
-Location is great, close to everything
-A lot of old people, so you're bound to get a noise complaint
-Petra is more than non-responsive for a contact in the management. She's just absent, straight up absent. No response from her when we called/emailed/left messages.
-Security is great, you need it when you have homeless people all over the place
-They never turn the heat off, so it get's hot extremely fast here.
-As I mentioned before, there are a lot of old people, so anything you do that they don't like, they'll call security on you.
-Roy at the front desk is awesome

A nice place in all.  Excellent door staff.  Superb location, with unbeatable views.  Comfy units, albeit small for the price.  Roof access (despite being configured all wrong).  Secure parking (no more break-ins thanks to cameras and security patrols).  Clean and fast laundry rooms.

Beware though, parking is a profiteering system and the staff can be rule Nazis (which can be good if used expediently).  Utility and maintenance pass-through costs are high enough to warrant tenant associations and legal battles (blech!)

They'd get four stars if things weren't quite so "corporate".  It's definitely run as a business so when you have questions or get scolded it's like dealing with a machine, not a group of caring landlords.  I'd still recommend my friends move in though despite it all - the location is just that nice.

Regardless of which side of the building you live, the views are stunning.  The location in regards to the Embarcadero and Financial District could not be any better with convenient access to the Muni and Bart.

I lived in a studio - layout was probably the best I've seen - feels more like a one bedroom apartment than a hotel room.

This review is coming from a visitor to the building.

First thing I noticed about the building was the lobby. It was horrid. It just reminded me of a cheap hotel lobby. The hallways, elevator and the apartment itself wasn't anything spectacular as well. The kitchen was usable but needed updating. The bathroom was plain and cramped. The laundry room was um how to put it....a tad gross?

I saw a good mix of residents around the building, a few with kids and many with silver tops. Everyone seemed polite and semi put together so that was a plus.

Now the views. My god the views. My god the windy windy views.

Suckers for high rises with views and a semi central location should probably add this place to their short list.

My friend did and now she has a 5 minute walk to work, jogs up and down the Embarcadero and enjoys relaxing cups of Sunday morning coffee on her high floor balcony. What a life.

Before you move in here make sure you check all the carpet and drapes.  They charged for for stains on the drapes and an "iron burn" on the carpet.  #1 the stains were probably from all the construction that took place below my unit.  They don't have screens on the windows.  #2 I never owned an iron.  So I know I wouldn't be building a fire in my bedroom.  These guys are a bunch of fucks.  Fuck this place.

I have lived in Vista East (formerly the Davis Building) for nine years.  The views are beautiful; security and door staff helpful and maintenance comes the next day.  This would be a four star review except for:

Outrageous increases in the water/sewer/trash bill outserviced to Conservice.  How could I be paying $42 in August and $62 in December?  Supposedly the total cost is pro-rated to all of the tenants whose leases specify we have to pay it (long-term renters don't pay for utilities) but I'm very suspicious because my bills spiked when the construction in the Davis courtyard began.  We've contacted management twice and have been told they are looking into it, but the bills continue to increase - up $6 since just last month.

Age and condition of the appliances.  My electric burners don't fully set into the slots, so I don't get an even cooking surface; the refrigerator is old, certainly not energy-efficient and breaking in various parts.  A dog could do a better job licking my dishes than the dishwasher does in cleaning them.

The apartments that have been upgraded are really lovely; mine looks like what it is - an aging box, even though we installed new carpet.  There are no baseboards, and unfortunately I didn't think of that before we installed the carpet, so the space where the carpet meets the walls is really ugly.

Just wanted to write an update to this review after recently moving out of the complex. I loved living there, but they didn't allow pets, and my girlfriend had a little furry +1.

Moving out can be stressful - and for me at least it went well. I got my deposit back, and while the leasing agent I was dealing with wasn't the nicest person in the world, it was a-ok.

    Some things to add:
    1) The place does get a tad hot - you almost have to keep the windows and doors open during the day so it isn't stifling when you get home.
    2) The interior walls between bedrooms in the apartment are thin as paper. The walls between the apartments are thick as the king cut at the House of Prime Rib.
    3) Though my work moved further away, I still found the location to be very convenient.
    4) There can be quite a bit of noise in the mornings with dump trucks and safeway docks. Summer nights warranted leaving windows open, but garbage trucks don't care for sleep.
    5) I got suckered into joining the gym/pool, and loved it.
    6) There were some garage break-ins in the *locked* garage downstairs. The building recently installed cameras and put up the man's photo - and caught him. Still.'
    7) I completely disagree with the other reviewer's saying this is a "granny home". I saw a couple of older people, but the norm seemed to be uptight professional. Maybe it depends on your building or floor.
    8) They recently redid their lobby, which I thought was decent before. It looks pretty corporate now, but it's not bad. The elevator decorations look a little like you're entering a microwave.

That's really about it. I still hold by the positives I listed in my original review. I think one of the reasons for such disparate reviews is that the complex is so big - I'd encourage other reviewers to mention which building they were in (I was in Dana/West).

I still think fondly of The Gateway and would recommend it to anyone.

I lived at this place for over a year and really liked living there. It's super convenient - Starbucks, Safeway, oasis grill, Osha Thai, Ferry building, Slanted Door etc are within half a block. I had lovely bay bridge view from the 14th floor. Studios are pretty decent size. The staff is really good. It's an old building so we had some plumbing issues once or twice a year but the service was great. They send someone right away. The security is awesome, they are always there to help. Parking felt really safe. If I didn't buy a place; I would still be living there.

Do  NOT stay here. Front desk staff nonexistent. Worst service imaginable. This is supposed to be for short term executive stay, but nothing about it is convenient. The service in particular makes everything very difficult and complicated, like even receiving fed ex pkgs. The apt is so shabby you would be ashamed to have anyone see it. There are cockroaches. No heat. Measly ratty towels. I've stayed in a lot of places, this is the single worst value for your money. You are better off staying on someone's couch. Also, they have so many weird rules, keys, passes etc you will just give up trying to get anything done. Ps the safeway grocery which is extolled, is a true dump and over priced at that.

We've lived in the complex for about three years now, first in Vista East (formerly called Davis), and now in Vista North (formerly Macondray).

By far the biggest advantages are the LOCATION and the VIEW.  We have the most phenomenal panoramic view of the Bay, from Coit Tower and Alcatraz to the Bay Bridge.  Safeway downstairs, and a super-short commute also can't be beat.

    Some unexpected benefits are:
    - Very fair move-out procedure.  I was really impressed with how little of the deposit from our first place they held on to.  They gave us a form with good advice, cautioning us that it would be cheaper for us to hire cleaners and get the curtains dry-cleaned ourselves, but giving us a range of prices (that they stayed within).  Also, after accidentally dropping a match on the carpet we expected to made to pay for replacing the whole thing, but they only charged us a very reasonable fee for patching.
    - Since we moved within the complex, from a 1BR to a 2BR, we didn't have to wait until our lease was up
    - Friendly door staff. Not 24/7, but they're there often enough
    - Big windows you can actually open, and big porches.  Not something you find in newer buildings
    - Short leases available.  $50 more to have a six-month lease rather than twelve.
    - Free basic cable (!).  Comcast doesn't like to tell you this, but check with the management office.  I think it was part of their contract when they wired the building.
    - Heat and electricity are included in the rent.  Water and trash bills are small, and not metered. (Long showers?  Who, me??)
    - Tons of storage, and pretty large apartments
    - Secure garage parking.  Sure, it's not cheap, but this is the FiDi.  It's cheaper than parking at any of the other garages in the area.
    - Very responsive maintenance staff

There are a few things that are not ideal...
    - Wall to wall carpet (except in the kitchen and bathrooms).  Good for noise absorption, but not my favorite
    - Washers and dryers are in the basement, not in apartments
    - No pets allowed
    - Old-ish fixtures and new but basic appliances.  Everything works fine, but I would prefer a gas stove rather than electric, and a range hood would help.  (But to be fair, there's a garbage disposal and a dishwasher - something not all rentals have.)

Overall, it's a nice place to live.  And rents are pretty reasonable for what you get.

This company is horrible. I was approached by the Account Manager Oetomo Jorianto regarding a Part Time job and let me tell you he is a jackass, extremely rude and I think disrespectful. He asked me yesterday by email if I could call to set up a interview. I was happy to have done so, however today I realized that my phone was dead and I forgot to charge it, a simple mistake right, well  Oteomo didn't think so. I tried to reach him several times today by email and he never responded, until finally about 415pm today, finally he replied back. I basically said in my emails that, I apparently forgot to charge my phone last night and it is still charging and is there any way or possibility to set up the interview here by email. You would think that the answer was yes and you would think he and the company would be accommodating, well wrong it was NO. His exact answer was and I quote " NO, thank you for your time". I thought that was so rude and so disrespectful.

So if anyone is looking for a job, whether you have to get a job or not. DO NOT APPLY TO THIS COMPANY OR IF YOU GET AN EMAIL FROM THIS PERSON(Oetomo Jorianto) OR SOMEONE ELSE FROM THIS COMPANY, DON'T APPLY. obviously I do not want what happened tome happen to someone else, save your time and respect. this jackass and the company he works for are so NOT WORTH IT!

Pros - convenient location if you work in the financial district, great views of the bay from some apartments, tennis and swim club on the grounds, security and concierge

Cons - WAY overpriced, area is dead during evenings and weekends, leasing staff is ill-mannered and unhelpful, studios are tiny (especially for the price), lots of homeless people in the area

You should be aware that the average age of tenants is in the late 50s.

I have lived here for 3 years.

PROS:  1. Location is perefect for my commute to Embarcadero Center.  2. Safeway around the block is a desirable option to have. 3. Rent Control is awesome these days and 4. We have new and great appliances, blv they stopped updating appliances a while so a small # (my apt included) did get the updated appliance but rest are old and crappy.

Cons - 1. Beware of Spalling in the bldg (dont ask what it is, just a lot of noise). 2. Awful mgmt and help all around i.e., dont expect anything. 3. Parking is expensive at 250+ a month and the fact that we dont have electronic control of the door is horrendous IMO.

Bottom-Line: The location is great, but could use a better mgmt team running the bldg and being responsive to tenant concerns/queries.

I was very unimpressed with the representatives of the Gateway Apartments. First of all, they are all impossible to get a hold of. Some have weird hours and others just don't find the need to pick up their phones. I was thinking of scheduling an appointment, but I was completely rushed into the process by one of the employees. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. She took my card number for what I had assumed to be a $50 range deposit fee. When I decided against these apartments, I called to cancel my appointment and I was assured I would be refunded whatever amount they had pulled from my account. Turns out $500 was taken and it will take 3-5 days for the money to be completely returned to me. I'm very much taken aback by the lack of professionalism of this company. Having been in customer service much of my career, I see it necessary to notify customers of what they're signing up for. A good representative would have told me exactly how much she was pulling from my account so that i wouldn't end up broke for a weekend unexpectedly. Thanks Gateway!

Location, Location, Location! You are paying for the location and amazing view! I can't complain. I wish we had newer appliances and more upgrades but if you want all that , you gotta go somewhere else. And there is nothing like the view and location that this place has. I have had no probs living here, I have been here for 2 years already. Ive never had any of the problems that I have read on other reviews. no bug problems, no probs with staff. Although I just recently had my cellphone stolen in the laundry room! Not to soo cool stealing from your own neighbors! but other than that i feel very safe here and very happy to live here!!

I have lived at the Gateway since 1972. I can walk to work, the grocery store and shopping/entertainment. The Farmers Market is close by and a good Saturday walking destination. I end up driving only about 500 miles a year. While some other neighborhood might look attractive at times, I always realize that this is the best. The employees are always courteous and helpful.

We lived there for a while. People are friendly, the office mostly very responsive. But you clearly have to love 30 year old fridges as well as old  dishwashers and stoves, - that stuff never gets replaced even if you ask for it!!! Oh, and turn a blind eye on the carpets: Apartment carpets are old and hallway carpets get cleaned rarely... Other then that it's a nice place to be!

Lived here 3 years and don't know why I did not move sooner. Seriously. If you need to live here for location I get it otherwise do not bother. The laundry room is disgusting and for what you pay you are not getting a lot. The management is non responsive and the "updated" units are really just up to this century. My first unit had a fridge I had to defrost. No joke! I made a big enough stink that they had to replace it since it ruined my produce but I fought like hell. It also has a weird mix of people. Lots of elderly and many units are rented out like hotel rooms run by The Marriott. I would also note that if you face Battery you will not be able to sleep. It is very hot in the building and everyone has to keep their windows open and so the early morning garbage trucks and the buses kill you.
