Having some time in Seattle I used yelp to find some interesting places to visit rather just wondering around downtown and found this place.
It doesn't seem to be ever too busy but has a good number of people to feel just about right.

Walk up the small hill and you get a great view of Seattle. It did seem odd but yet also fascinating to see the "gas works" presumably to the side which did hold some interest. There seemed to be a few dodge characters over there but no harm.

It's an excellent place to just laze around on a lovely summer day, enjoying life as it goes on by, be it rowers, dog walkers or planes!
Worth a visit if you are in town.

This is apparently one of the quintessential parks in Seattle.  My first experience here was on July 4th and coming back this past week it's hard to imagine that this little park held tens of thousands of people.

The views of Lake Union and downtown are great, but it would be nice if they had a few more benches where you could sit down and enjoy the view.

The wind also seems to be quite strong here...not the best conditions for a picnic, but great for flying a kite.  Also, watch out for all the goose poop!

If I had to take out-of-town visitors to one park in Seattle, this wouldn't be it.  Take them to Kerry Park instead.  But if you're in the neighborhood, then this place is worth stopping by.  Parking is also very convenient (as long as you're not coming on July 4th!).

If you can't tell from my reviews, I'm not a huge parks person in general which is why my reviews have a tendency to be on the "low end."

That being said, it's pretty cool. I love the idea that you can walk up the hill and look over Lake Union and the city. Beautiful scenery, beautiful views, great place to walk around with a dog or to just layout.

What I did not love was that everything smelled like urine (and I'm pretty sure it did not come from dogs) and I kept stepping in poop on the grass. Not sure it was dog poop either.

Great for a quick walk on a nice day though!

The last couple years I have spent time running to and from Gas Works.  I can't say this is the best park to visit if you are looking for typical park functionality.  There isn't much room in terms of setting up balls sports and (other than the hill) limited characteristics that would entertain your energy filled youngsters.  One bonus are the trails that go through it.  If you happen to be biking, walking or rollerblading by you can easily swoop through for the views.  Which brings me to the glory of Gasworks, the view!  It is an amazing place to visit at night because of the view of Seattle over Lake Union.  It really is a majestic feeling to sit atop the hill and take in our great city.  Certainly location over functionality in this case.

I love the contrast of the old rustic-looking metal structures against the backdrop of rolling green hills and blue water and beautiful city skyline.

There are lots of great areas to lay out a blanket.. just sit in the soft grass and chillax while gazing out onto the water.

I recently discovered the Burke-Gilman Trail leads right to the park as well and there are many great spots nearby to grab a portable lunch and have a nice picnic.

No matter what, this park is on my must visit list whenever i'm in town and it should be on yours too!

When I was a teenager, I worked at a major department store chain.  Sometimes, my home store in this totally cool, happening mall would farm me out to a long-dead, post-apocalyptic mall in another town.

This was a torture beyond any I could have imagined at the time.  Few things are as soul-crushing as a place that once had many happy visitors, which is now rundown and nearly abandoned.  I'd mope past the faded signs on long-empty stores and stare at the weirdly juxtaposed festive sparkles embedded in the tile flooring.  Just thinking about it now makes me want to find someone - anyone - else in the world to hug.

That is how I felt at Gas Works Park.  Sure, there's a great view and some neat old machinery to climb around on.  And the drug dealers and crackheads will play some bangin' tunes for you on their boom box stolen from the 1980s.  Even so, I was unimpressed by this "park" littered with broken beer bottles, cigarette butts, and (strangely) packing peanuts.

Also, in case you were wondering, Gas Works Park is engineered to be The Most Dangerous Place You Could Possibly Take a Toddler (Except Maybe that Razor Blade and Fireworks Factory).

Gas Works is one of my favorite parks in Seattle, as I believe it has the absolute best view!  Whether you're with a car full of people, out for a jog or bike ride, or walking, Gas Works is the perfect getaway from the busyness of the city and its surrounding neighborhoods.  It's far enough away from Fremont that it doesn't "feel" crowded (unless it's the 4th of July or New Years!) and there is even a large parking lot so you don't end up spending hours finding parking!

Aside from the breathtaking view of Lake Union-- from Capitol Hill to Queen Anne-- the history of this park is intriguing.  The old boilers give the park character and with its conversion to a picnic area, with grills and open play space, Seattle-lites and visitors can enjoy a bit of its history.  With Gas Work's steep hills, this park is also a great location for kite-flying!  On a nice day, I often see families and couples flying colorful kites--such a fun sight to see!  Another great plus to the steep hills is that you can easily find a spot to "escape."  If you're in need of solitude and peace, you can walk over a hill and find the perfect spot where the hill blocks out all of the laughter and noise from other people.  **I'm usually looking for this spot :)

My only negative to this park is the amount of duck poop that ends up all over the grass.  Before you sit or lay, make sure you kick that sh*t away!

This is probably one of the most breathtaking parks I have ever been to.  The views of Seattle are incredible!

Let alone the history of this place with historic industrial relics, this is a photographer's paradise.  Take a walk on the grass to the shore for amazing views of downtown, the space needle, and Lake Union.  Watch as sailboats go by, people paddle their longboards, ducks quack (both the real kind and Ducktours) and seaplanes land.

Go to the top of kite hill and have a picnic, cuddle with your significant other or do as the hill is named and fly a kite.

There is a small parking lot.  Or you can bike/walk as the park is right along the Burke-Gilman trail.

Also, this is THE place to be on the Fourth of July for fireworks.  Tons of booths setup, radio broadcasts, music, etc.  Walk or bus though - don't drive.

If you are visiting Seattle, definitely make he effort to visit here for 20 minutes...but I bet you will want to stay longer!!!

    I'm from Detroit.
    The Motor City.
The Place You Never Go Walking Around.
That Thing That Used To Be A City But Is Now A Dead Husk Full Of Crack And Murder.
    Motown.
    Etc.

Mother nature and I didn't even meet until like, 1995. Instead, I was born into an old oil pan underneath a Ford Taurus in a garage somewhere, and raised in an abandoned factory. For me, nature meant the tree in the 7-11 parking lot. There is a place in Detroit where four different highways meet for no reason. Just to hang out or whatever. This occurs just after you drive over/through Del Ray (or just before, depending on which direction you're headed). Del Ray is basically the setting for any industrial center needed for a post-apocalyptic film if Gary, Indiana isn't available. Something is always belching fire, or a smokestack the size of a skyscraper is emitting a freakishly large cloud of what is probably cyanide or crack smoke into the atmosphere and everything is made of tubes and gears and despair. I love Del Ray.

Seattle is like, THE EXACT OPPOSITE of Detroit. Even demographically. If you swap all of Seattle's white people for black people and all of its Asians for White people, that's Detroit. This place is like a funhouse mirror full of trees for me. Basically if you replaced every tree with an abandoned building you would have Detroit. It's crazy.

So how wonderful for me, now that I get to go frolic up mountainsides and explore fucking rainforests or the ocean or whatever, to go wandering away from a huge parade of naked people on bikes, down a meandering pathway past a purposely broken wall (not like on accident where I come from), up the side of an enormous hill that overlooks a lake and this beautiful city of ours, to see Del Ray rising up to greet me.

20 foot weeds growing rampant around the rusty, tube-centric trappings of some monstrous industrial contraption, encased in a park, right on the water. It's like someone planted a little bit of home here as a welcome gift. I fucking love it. Honestly.

I watched kite-flying kids gallivanting, joggers doing their jogs, scratch kickball leagues drinking PBR and yet, within five minutes I was dangling from an overflow pipe, surrounded by concrete while a bum cooked a hot dog on a terrifying small grill. It was amazing.

the fact that they've converted small bits and pieces of the thing into benches and play areas is fantastic. I am a huge sucker for reappropriated spaces in the age of tear-it-down-and-build-a-condo architecture.

For a lazy day spent looking at the sun reflect off the waves in one direction and the ruins of post-industrial America in the other, this is basically Heaven because when you're done you can walk right back into Seattle, not Detroit.

So you don't even have to bring a gun to have a good time.

Many a lover, many a city gazer...whatever your pleasure, as long as you can appreciate gorgeous lake views and cityscapes, I'm telling you, it's absolutely amazing and peaceful... erm, maybe not so peaceful, as the city does love this park, and it can get crowded...

Carve out a little space for yourself and relax... kick off those sandals and enjoy the sun, breathe in deeply and let life slink a little this way and that.

After having visited, I learned that many of my friends had actually gotten engaged here. I can definitely understand why!

It's been over 30 years now, and counting, that I've been coming to Gasworks Park.

It started with that most visceral, and most common, of its appeals. I came here with friends while in elementary school to climb on stuff. My very mild-mannered younger self put adults in the ironic position of encouraging me to climb higher than I was. I looked at all the hard metal landing surfaces and exposed bolts and replied that I didn't think that that seemed safe. There's still a part of me that wonders whether kids should have to demonstrate a minimal amount of gracefulness before they start climbing. My clumsy self could always easily see hard landings in here. As I grew older, I gravitated toward sports where bulk mattered more than grace. Heh.

As time wore on and college arrived, Gasworks became a place for long walks down from campus while I was going to the U. I always dug people way more who were down to explore the neighborhoods and hang out at the park once in a while, rather than sitting around the house drinking beers all night. And, honestly, I probably needed that prompting, because I certainly hung around campus at parties way more often than I visited Gasworks while an undergrad.

In my 20s, the lure of Gasworks proved greater. I came down here many evenings to look at the city--when I lived downtown, a walk around Lake Union at night was often a preferred workout (even if I had already been to the gym that day...geez, I miss being in shape). It was a great place to bring dates, too. For many women, a quiet walk into a very dark park seems to feel like a peek into a secret world. It made me realize how many more places a guy could go at night alone.

A buddy of mine was here with a date one night when some nut rushed at them with...a pruning saw. I asked him if it took a long time at the police station, reporting it, and he said "nah...you don't think I wanted to ruin the vibe of the date by hanging out with cops, do ya?" I was shocked at the time, and maybe still am a little bit, to imagine that such a crime could go unreported. But, then, it was only a pruning saw, I suppose. And I'd remember if such incidents ever became a pattern here--they never did. And I never have felt unsafe here at night, before or since, but that's easy for a guy to say, I suppose.

And truth be told, I have spent entire nights here. When I was doing security work in my younger days, we would keep an eye on all the setup during the Fourth of July celebrations here. I've never enjoyed the crowds here during the fireworks, though you can't beat the view of the fireworks from here without buying a place with a Lake Union view. But it's a really impressive setup, and watching the park come to life at dawn was fun. I even got to keep a bunch of beers left over from the VIP room. I lugged them back to campus on foot in a duffel bag. That might have been my last trip on foot back up the hill to campus.

As more years have passed, I have seen guerrilla film crews at work in the park at night, and not-so-guerrilla film crews shooting way more light-hearted, silly youtubey stuff here during the day. And I've settled into what you might call a more grownup use of the park, where I tend mainly to bring out of towners here for series of predictable snapshots. But I always miss living nearby, watching seaplanes take off and land on rainy days, and watching the city at night when it seemed like no one else was around, or would be around. You can't beat Gasworks.

On my last day in the city, I had a few hours to kill before my flight. I decided to take on Gas Works Park, which isn't close to where I was staying Downtown. Gas Works Park is on the other side of Union Lake, probably around 4 miles from downtown.

If you have a good 3-4 hours to kill and if you're in pretty good shape, I would highly recommend doing this walk. Once you get to Union Lake, there are excellent running/biking paths that will lead you directly to Gas Works Park. The walk along Westlake is beautiful, with awesome scenery, and on a nice day, it's well worth the effort.

The actual park itself is amazing. It does get crowded, but the views are so amazing that you don't even notice the people. I was able to zone out for a good 30 minutes and then treated myself to a nice, fatty meal at the end of the day.

    Great place!

I studied engineering in college, and I nerded out once I saw the plant to the left of the park area. According to my local friend, graffiti tends to accumulate on portions of the plant, but the art regularly gets painted over. Bring your kids here if you want to subliminally implant an interest in science... or graffiti art into their minds.

The grassy knoll is a prime spot to get a view of Seattle's skyline, seaplanes landing on Union Lake, and massive kites in the air.

It is one of the best juxtapositions of science and park.

Fun place for kids...if it wasn't for one or more transients around drinking beer and/or asking for money.

This park have a special place in my heart because I spent time here recovering from my first drunken experience.

The park is located right by the water and there is that great view of downtown Seattle and the Space Needle. There's a lot of grassy areas just to sit down and do nothing, which makes it a great place for a lazy day. And occasionally, you may spot a hot looking guy, running up and down the hills, topless with chiseled abs, and sweating too...Oh- la-la ;)

When the sun comes out more often in Seattle, I'll go fly a kite or dude-watching.

Definitely my favorite park to stumble around in whilst battling inebriation... Lots to look at, even more to climb on at your own risk, and even fun to watch the puddle jumpers and kites and all sorts of other aquatic stuffs that are constantly going on... Good for walking and biking as well... My one complaint is that people do not clean up after their doggies enough at this one... no fault of the parks though, just jerky peeps.

Waterfront view of Seattle with a nice wavy trail for bikes and joggers. The highlight was watching a group of four people hitting the frisbee with their hands. They were able to do that because there was a nice wind out. I have seriously never thought about doing that and when I see people improvise something that's been done, I just stop and stare. Saw someone else just climbing a tree. I don't know what it was, but it felt liberating to see that kid reach that canopy.

Kites, kids, and carefree, here. [Through and through]

On a clear day in Seattle this view is as good as it gets.  Better than the Needle?  It's debatable.  It is definitely cheaper ($18 vs free!!).

Had the pleasure of hanging out with myself at Gasworks.  Brought a lovely small spicy turkey pot pie with me (from Pie) and sat on the hill and oogled at the cityscape and devoured my lunch.  It's a nice little walk from the bus stop in the Fremont neighborhood.

I observed people flying kites and the beautiful piercing colors of the old brown, rusted gas plant, blue skies, green grass, and dark blue water.  It's an interesting mix of old, industrial transformed into beautiful, natural scenery.

Once again, if it's a clear day do yourself a favor and come here!

One of my favorite parks in Seattle! Overlooking the beautiful downtown area and Lake Union, you really should bring your camera with you for some great shots!

It's a great park to fly kites, roll down the hill, play frisbee, play with your dog, lay out in the sun, or just walk around. They also have jousting/medieval dressed people playing on the side of the park and lots of people practicing parkour.

There is a pretty spacious parking lot for park goers to park in and if you are coming to the park for holidays such as July 4th, make sure to get there early because it packs out for the fireworks spectacles. It's a great park, however, it would be nice to not find homeless people drinking behind the colorful pipelines that are under the gazebo-like structure.

What a great way to transform an old industrial site into something the entire city can enjoy. With a wonderful view of the city Gas Works is a great park to visit. I recommend coming by at night as well since they close well after dark. The night I visited there were a bunch of fire twirlers (no lie) performing to crazy circus music with the lit up skyline in the background. Bizarre but simultaneously wonderful and captivating. Maybe you can get lucky and have a free show as well.

This is a very cool park. They have old crude oil refinery machines that were left there to rust over the years. Some might call it blight...but it's an antique from another time. It helps us remember Seattle's past as the Alaskan gateway and how important crude oil was to the development of the city.

The park itself has a nice hill and when you get to the top you can see Lake Union with Downtown and the Space needle on the other side of the water. It's cool to look at all the house boats and all the boats going across the lake. If you're really lucky...someone will come land one of those aquatic planes on the lake and you'll be able to watch him land.\

This park is fairly accessible from the Burke-Gilman trail....and I think the walk from Fremont is a bit long, but very enjoyable.

I enjoy it, don't get me wrong, but its just not one of those parks that I say "omg let's go this summer!"

You have definitely become part of my life again this past summer.

It's been years since I had visited this park until this past summer and I had forgotten how great it was just to be there!!!

The metal structures that you can climb on, the fact that it is on the water, walk to the top of a hill and have a gorgeous view across the water and don't forget the diversity of people that visit this place (great for people watching).

I didn't realize that "the funky park down the street from my house" was so famous.  It's been in a few movies, has a few famous yearly events that meet on its grounds every year, and--apparently--a great date spot.  I was taken on a date here for my birthday (I'm a modern and evolved man, I don't mind a lady taking *me* on a date... especially when it's  my wife!)  (Most especially!)

We broke out the picnic basket and, by we, I mean my date (it was my birthday, so I didn't have to do much) and procured some delicious treats from Salumi, some fresh fruit, and a cake to celebrate my birth.  There were all sorts of people hanging out in the park that day: the family with the kid that had a shirt on, but no bottoms and went to the bathroom over by the lake.  The two young ladies making out behind us.  The kids that figured out how to make a grass sled and were sliding down the side of the hill at dangerously high speeds.  Everyone was well behaved and seemed to be enjoying themselves.

As the evening progressed what impressed me the most was how people kept showing up.  Apparently, Gasworks Park is pretty popular at all times of the day.  I drive by it in the morning on my commute to work and I always see a gaggle of people doing something (running, yoga, tai chi, etc.) and enjoying themselves.

It's a great park, and I hope they don't find that the rendering plant that used to be there has given us all cancer 40 years from now.  That would sort of make me want to take at least one star away from this review.

Who would have thought that abandoned derlict machinery from the industrial age would be the perfect location for a park!!
Its true!  this is a great local spot to see the city.  Situated right on the shores of Lake Union, this is a favorite spot for families, kite flyers, graduation and or wedding photos.  the hill has a bicycle trail that goes all the way to the top where there is some weird sundial which is an interesting feature.  I love seeing sea planes from Kenmore Air take off and land right in front of you on the lake.  The gasworks area itself is an odd assortment of rusting behemoths.  Um..have you had your tetanus booster recently?  Lots of room to throw a frisbee or just lay about.  A definite must see stop for out of towners or townies alike.

This is such a beautiful place. It has the cool old gas works buildings still there (but fenced off) and there are always festivals, usually beer, going. There is a wonderful hill called "Kite Hill" that has some neat art imbedded at the top and is wonderful for kite flying and one of my friend's held her wedding there and it was fabulous! There is a big Steampunk population that haunts it and there are large open spaces as well as the old pipes the kids can play on.

I am a photo-slut and this place is supreme if you are looking for awesome shots to take of Seattle.

We came on a beautiful sunny day in Seattle. The park has a couple big grassy green hills you can sit atop and hang out, read, catch some great shots. There are huge rustic/industrial appearing gas tanks scattered about.

To the West, you can walk down to the rocky shore next to the water and catch a glimpse of the lake houses across Lake Union. To the South is the panoramic view of downtown Seattle and the Space Needle. To the West is the Aurora Bridge.

You are guaranteed great pictures and views at this park.

Bring a frisbee, your radio, your favorite book, a picnic lunch, and your best camera. This park is awesome!

Excellent views from the top of the hill!  Crazy looking industrial relics are good for photographs.  A kite enthusiast's paradise!

The last Spring Friday of the year and it was gorgeous at Gasworks Park. There was a newlywed couple with photographers, group bbqs, couples on picnic, families, guitars, kites, bikes, kyackers, bottled water, locals and tourist.

And the high tide brought me closer to the water to find hidden bench nooks facing Lake Union. So there are many views from one spot. That lead us to find some random flock of Canadian Geese. Then a trail filled with playful wild ducks and the discovery of houseboats.

But rusty gasoline disterillies as artwork seems to be that of a lazy artist. Someone made up for it with the Sun Dial Sculpture at the top of the hill. Thank goodness. And I learned of astrology allowing the Sun to enter every zodiac sign. So every second of every minute of every hour of everyday has full karmic meaning. Holy salmon!

Gasworks Park is weird, romantic and gorgeous.

Why would you give this place anything less that 5 stars?

    Great place to take out-of-towners.
Great place to wander around alone on a random afternoon.
Great place to have a picnic, fly a kite, see fireworks, spot a stray creepy black cat amongst the iron ruins.... etc. etc.
    Great date place.
    Great steampunk palace.

    GREAT!

I moved to washington had a serious time of depression difficulty connection to the area when i was in undergrad. UNTIL I ran to gas works parks by myself.
Saw it in the evening and looked up and saw the sky line of Seattle. WOW a view like this makes you connect to the city like nothing else. Welcomes you in a way saying "welcome and this is your home!"   If I had any more adipose tissue to allow increase converstion of estrogen in me I would of shed a tear. But... nothing but just awesomeness just allowed me to look at it and smile inside and say.. YEAH THIS IS AWESOME!!! so yeah for those nature lovers... this is you statue of liberty. The view welcomes all. :)

The park is amazing. The views are amazing. The hill is amazing.

The old machinery is cool to look at but.... The bums are scary. The trash is gross. Old condoms laying around is yuck. Beer containers in the rafters, ground, corners, above the fencing, etc... sad. I saw a man sleeping (I hope) so far up in the air on a machinery type thing. Homeless in groups in the dark corners. The bathrooms dirty and scary. I would not go here at dusk. The place now, just creeps me out even in the day. Sad.

If you stay away from the old gasworks machinery, then it's a pretty cool, clean and safe feeling place.
