The four-story Garrison Inn, built around 1809-1810, is a gorgeous, intimate, 19th century, boutique-style, national landmark hotel with nearly two hundred years of history. In fact, there is a lot of colonial and maritime history in Newburyport, a town that was originally founded back in the 1600s by shippers and sailors, and the place where the US Coast Guard was born and where major shipbuilding took place. The area of Newburyport that surrounds the Garrison Inn and beyond has numerous colonial-era residential buildings that add to a captivating and interesting history.

I actually lived in Newburyport many years ago, right on historic State street. Eventually I moved out of state, but then a few years later I visited and stayed at the Garrison Inn for a weekend. The hotel has been rumored to be haunted for a long time. Over the decades there have been many reports by guests and workers of the inn who claimed to have witnessed ghostly apparitions. Even the restaurant next door, David's Tavern, which is actually part of the inn, is also rumored to be haunted. I've heard people talk of glasses and plates levitating in the air and then suddenly breaking. A concierge at the inn actually told me a story of a man who once stayed at the inn who was freaked out after seeing a floating head moving about on one of the upper floor hallways. It was apparently so disturbing that the man ended up sleeping in the lobby area, which was permitted by management of the inn, considering it was an apparent haunting and nothing new to the inn. I myself didn't experience any sort of ghostly encounter, though I was hoping to.

Newburyport is a great place to visit on the seacoast, and I highly recommend staying at this charming Inn. The staff is super friendly and very accomodating.

No ghost sightings for me. I stayed at the Garrison Inn last weekend for a post-Valentine's Day getaway, and I was pretty happy with it.  We took advantage of their special "hot date" rate and stayed in a Grand Park View room. The room was large and clean, and it seemed like it had been recently painted. The bed had cozy, clean linens and was very comfortable, and the room was tastefully decorated. The flat screen TV hanging above the fireplace was a nice amenity. There were many charming details, both in the historic architecture, as well as in the decor. The front desk service was excellent. The woman working there made checking in and out very easy, and was helpful in giving us information about the town.

The 1 star demotion has mostly to do with value. The special rate was fine, but we both agreed that we would not return during their normal season. Their normal rates are definitely too high for the quality. Also, their website makes the continental breakfast look better than it is. Granted, it's free, but I was still disappointed. While I like the idea of it being served in Cappuccino Bar fashion, and it was all very quaint, my "made to order" egg and cheese sandwich on a croissant did not taste very good. I think they need to upgrade their breakfast sandwich ingredients.

Overall, it was a good experience. Newburyport is the perfect town for a romantic getaway weekend, and I would certainly recommend the Garrison Inn if you go during their "hot dates."

Absolute disaster. Not only did they screw up reservations for members of our wedding party, but completely failed to make appropriate credit on the bills. The staff was not friendly and I would avoid this place in favor of the Essex in if you are looking to stay in NewburyPort.
