5 reviews for Garlic Press the
My parents live in Midland and even though it's in the middle of the west TX desert doesn't mean you can't have spectacular dining. My first visit to the Garlic Press was after a morning of shopping with my mom. We met my dad (a meat and potatoes kinda guy) for lunch. My dad had the chile relleno and loved it. My mom and I had the chicken crepes with mushrooms and asparagus with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Everything was just delicious.
One of my favorite aspects of the Garlic Press is that they request that cell phone ringers be turned off. I LOVE that. I enjoyed my lunch so much that every time I visit Midland I ask to go to the Garlic Press.
This place was amazing the first time that I went there, a few years ago.
I've been there a about 4 times this summer and It seems like its going down hill. We ordered the cheese plate as an appetizer ($14) and there was only two types of cheese- with very little quantity. Most of the plate was covered with dried apricots. Salads were measly at best and lacking in the good stuff. The steaks are still good, but this place is a far cry compared to what it used to be.
This use to be a five star menu in my list, but it has changed over the last couple of years. It is a very nice restaurant (and very quiet- great place to relax). Its a nice place for a date. The chef/owner has tried out some asian fusion dishes which IMO hurt the restaurant. The Asian Tuna Stack is great to look at, but the quallity of the tuna is just not there (too ambitious so far from the water). While it had great flavor (the wasabi dressing was dead on), it seemed a bit over-cooked (then again I love real sushi) and the tuna lacked that deep red color of sashimi grade tuna. The Grilled Shrimp With Berry Chipotle Glaze is amazing and inspiring. This is how restaurants should cook. I would really stick with the steaks- they are usually perfectly cooked. Almost all the desserts are amazing as well. Its just too bad about the fish dishes. The Duck is also pretty good. The staff has always been nice and attentive (sometimes so much I have to shoo them away). If you have never been and are in the area, you should definitely go.
I took a friend to this restaurant for her birthday, and we both left feeling disappointed with the service and ambience. The food was palatable, though a tad bit bland. My problem wasn't with the food. The service was poor, as the waiter basically stood in front of us with barely a word and waited for us to order, then when we could not immediately order he left and was nowhere to be seen for fifteen minutes. After we had ordered and received our food he never once came back or said a word to us until we were finished with our meals. Maybe we didn't look like big tippers, I don't know, but we certainly weren't that night! I don't stiff waiters/waitresses no matter how much they, well, suck, but I left him slightly less than what he was probably expecting from me (I'm assuming he didn't expect much).
It's possible my expectations were too high, but I wasn't impressed with the environment or "vibe" of the restaurant. It didn't feel much different than sitting in a McDonald's, though at least at McDonald's they don't have aesthetically repulsive "art" hanging on the walls. I didn't feel as though I could have a nice pleasant conversation with my friend, since we were very closely packed into a little corner with about a dozen other people seated around us.
If you should decide to visit this restaurant, I wish you the best of luck and I hope you don't get the same waiter that I did.
Great restaurant in Midland, Texas. I love the seared tuna stack.
