This market is one of my favorite markets. They have such a variety of things to buy. From the produce section, all the way to the meat & seafood department. I'm a sanitation freak, so better believe this place is kept in tip top shape. The food is good quality, and the prices are okay. Oh yea....

Tips:
~ If you like oatmeal raisin cookies, try their homemade ones next to the bread department. Yummy!

~Try not to buy spaghetti noodles from here, VERY PRICEY!

Fresh produce? Check. Every Amy's Pita Chip flavor? Check. Fresh made sushi? Check.

The list goes on. Thank god for Garden of Eden in Hoboken. While A&P is great for staples (4$ box of cereal is fine---GOE charges 6.50!) I'm a stickler for fresh and organic produce. This place is always hopping with people heading home from the gym looking for a healthy meal or items to stock up. They also have these amazing tofu noodles that I can't find ANYWHERE.

The Organic shop next door is good, but limited and super pricey. Garden of Eden is decently priced, always fresh and the service is quick and snappy.

Special note: The butcher is AMAZING and cuts single serving pieces of fish (yes, I'm single---yes I don't want to order a huge fillet and not half of it!)

Bonus points because they deliver if your purchase is 25$ or more and you live within 6 blocks.

Aside from the fresh produce/meat, everything in here is overpriced.  You can get the same exact product (name brand and size) down the block at Kings for less.

Garden of Eden really knows how to whet your appetite.  They had "Coming Soon!" signs out forever.  I waited in anticipation for at least three months.  Thankfully, the wait ended and I was not disappointed.  In fact, I was WOWed.

The store isn't huge, but it isn't small either.  And it seems like everywhere you look, from the floor to the ceiling, there's a new goody waiting to be discovered.  I haven't bought one thing from here that I didn't like.

The fruits and veggies are all well cared for and always fresh.  The prices are decent, too.  In fact, I've found them cheaper than A&P at times.  And I love that I can buy one carrot, just ONE, instead of a huge bag full of them.  I live alone and there's no way I can use an entire bag of carrots (even if it's only 99 cents) before it goes bad.

The homemade soup is DELICIOUS.  And the prices are good too.

They've got a great selection of sauces... all kinds of sauces.  Just check out the back wall over the meat case... and the shelves in front of the meat case... and shelves in front of the deli case...

And their deli finally wore me down enough to purchase some fresh salami and pepperoni.  I'm not a big fan of cured meats, but these were good!

Then let's talk about the bakery.  OH MAN.  The bread is fresh.  The pastries are delicious.  And I've decided that they have THE BEST chocolate chip cookie (for $1.59!) in the area.  I think it's better than Levain Bakery and it's $2 cheaper to boot.

Garden of Eden really is a little piece of heaven on Washington.  I always spend more than I plan to when I go and yet it's still my favorite place to waste time on a Saturday afternoon!

Three words: CRUNCHY TOFU SALAD.

Way better quality produce than A&P or Shoprite, and surprisingly somewhat better prices.  In fact, I bought a package of Campari tomatoes at A&P that were 6 bucks, and at Garden of Eden they were 4.  Anjou pears--half of them are always ripe, which lends itself very well to a quick snack.  Yogi tea is generally 1.50 cheaper here as compared to Shoprite.

If you go into a gourmet food store thinking EVERYTHING is going to be more expensive, you're wrong.  Seriously, do some research!!  The salad bar areas always look so delicious, and great quality too.  Underutilized spot in the store is where they sell their fresh pasta, way in the back across from the fish counter & olive bar.  You can buy the pasta by the pound or already premeasured.  Delicious spinach gnocchi.  Impress your new date with this stuff.  I swear it works.

HORROR SHOW!

They use nail polish to remove expiration dates, or remove from the package all together and repackage it in "Garden of Eden" bags or containers.

Cakes sit so long in the case that they have grown mold INSIDE of them! Beautiful on the outside, moldy on the inside... yum!

The lines are sooo long and the cash register set up is a joke.  The cashiers do not speak English, so I hope your Turkish is good! The place is TINY and overfilled.

Not sure how they pass the health or fire inspections!

Enjoy!

Oh Garden of Eden. You are absolutely amazing.

I'm definitely a fan of the cheese selection. We get at least three cheeses every visit: a new one to try, my favorite danish havarti, and Argentinean Reggianto for grating. The Argentinean Reggianto is very similar to Parmesan and much cheaper.

I also love the fresh veggies. I've been enjoying the corn on the cob lately. The potatoes are excellent and very inexpensive.

Well, I now know that Hoboken has arrived.  We have a Garden of Eden, and it is just like the ones in the city.  Beautiful produce beautifully displayed, fresh fish and meats, a fantastic deli and bakery...you get the idea.

Here's a like with some photos:  http://hoboken411.com/...

My days of schlepping groceries from the city onto the PATH train to Hoboken may be over!

WOW. Awesome. This store has everything. From the outside it appears to be a market or grocery store, but I doubt I could find these items in any random market.  First, the organic selection of foods was fabulous. Then, you have your where-do-I-look-first desert display. Also, many candy-type treats that I've never seen anywhere that I got a kick out of.
Additionally, there is a restaurant upstairs. I have yet to dine there, but I am certainly planning on going. I hear it's great. And if it's anything like the store, it will be a treat.

It's been over a year now since GoE opened and I have been going consistently ever since.  I figure it's about time that I put together a comprehensive review on some of the key areas of the place:

Produce - Their selection is superb and I don't think I've ever had a difficult time finding anything I needed, regardless of how obscure it was (mini Peruvian purple potatoes, anyone?).  My one complaint , which probably contributes to this being a 4* review and not a 5* review, is that I have had several quality issues with produce over the past year.  Sometimes I'll open a banana that looks perfect on the outside, but is brown on the inside, oranges and citrus fruit have been dry from day one. , etc.   I still think Sobsey's beats them for quality of produce but, nonetheless, GoE is good.

Meats - Excellent quality.  Their in-store, dry-aged beef is awesome, but overpriced. I wish they would have a better selection of sausages (no good quality Italian sausage???  c'mon, guys, this is Hoboken).   In general, though, a wonderful, fresh selection.

Seafood - Excellent selection, excellent quality and they are really true fishmongers who will do whatever you ask them to.   I bought 4 lbs. of live lobsters for a dish I was making on Christmas and they had no issues splitting the tails and claws and did a great job at it.

Cheese - Best selection in the area, but often lacks a bit of expertise behind the counter.  The Cheese Store over at Monroe Arts Center is run by a true cheese nut, so he may be a better bet if you really want something unusual or want the full story behind your cheese.   The selection here is awesome, though.  Really amazing.

Juices - Very fresh and tasty.  I buy a bottle of carrot juice and keep it around for a week, mixing it with orange juice, for smoothies, etc.

Hot Buffet - one of the most overlooked lunch sources in Hoboken.  If you can get there for lunch when the food is still fresh, you'll get to enjoy some amazing dishes at a reasonable price (Remember:  they have seating upstairs.).

Bakery - Good selection.  Fresh French Baguette is the best in Hoboken.  I think they have given up on making a true Italian loaf since their offering was always a bit tough and they have a lot of competition in this town - go to Dom's instead.  Great rolls for sandwiches and burgers.   Pastries are fantastic and top notch, maybe just a step below Carlos on Washington.

Prices - you are going to spend a lot of money here, but, like-for-like, I don't think they charge anymore for the quality of goods they have in stock.  You'd pay more for the same quality elsewhere in the city.  Your total is often higher here because it's so damn difficult to walk out without a pile full of stuff...

Overall, an excellent store and a wonderful addition to Hoboken.

Great place! Always makes me hungry when I browse around. Butcher shop has a great selection too. I usually drop by if I want to cook at home but too lazy for cooking prep. Love that it's not as big as your garden variety Whole Foods (see what I did there?). Great staff too. Helpful and attentive. Not what you'd expect in a supermarket.

Have to jump on the "awesome" band wagon here. But I'll try to provide a little more info:

First off, prices.. I actually live a block from A&P and will gladly take a hike up to washington for eden. And oddly enough, it seems as though I spend way less money. Prolly due to the fact that I buy more fresh items and less packaged goods. Don't get sucked into all the imported packaged good (e.g. Olive oil for $10.. waste). Go fresh or don't go at all.

Second, some recommendations..  I've been eating Filet Mignon like I'm some sorta bloated French aristocrat since Eden came to town. And they have these great little pre-packs of cut veggies for @ $4.00 (perfect for two people). I've been making restaurant worthy dinners for 2 for under $30 bucks.

I've also been using their pre-cut stir-fry beef (which are really tender lean cuts) for Fajitas. With fresh peppers and onions, I get a huge meal for 2 for under $15.

I've also made a point of grabbing a differnent type of cheese everytime I go... all have been pretty amazing.

The bakery is my only complaint. Maybe it's cause I go on my way home from work but there is NEVER a decent loaf of anything left. A roll here and a roll there and bunch of pre-packed wheat breads. Dunno..

The closest thing to Whole Foods a yuppy Hobokenite could ask for. The produce is the best in town-- far better than what you'll find at Kings or the A&P, and is well priced to boot.  They have a good selection of dry and fresh pastas, cheeses, and an olive bar.  They also offer desserts in single serve sizes, which helps one pinch-hit dessert when you have last minute dinner guests.

I just love everything. I was tempted to buy baked goods, but having a tonsillectomy prevented me. The salads looked really delicious. I love Garden of Edens everywhere. I have yet to try their sushi.

I was a fan of Sobsey's until this place showed up.  Thank goodness for GOE.  Sobsey's is a very dear little shop, but everything there cotsts three times what I think it should - I only went there because the only alternative until now was a deli.  GOE is a minute from my apartment, gorgeous, and oddly affordable.  I've even started cooking as a result of this place.  Well, I made nachos...that's cooking, right?

Being new to Hoboken (and I didn't know that there was an A&P until I read these reviews, I found the Garden of Eden by just walking aroumd, of course. The produce is good and all that, but, honestly, I can't see the point of paying 50% more for regular stuff: $6.00 for a half gallon of Tropicana that costs $4.00 down the block; $4 for butter that costs $3 down the block... seems like a huge ripoff to me.

Walking through here reminded me of walking through FAO Schwarz as a kid. I wanted to see and touch everything (don't worry germ-a-phobes, I didn't touch). A grocery store like Garden of Eden makes me want to grab a bunch of goodies and go home to cook. Nothing wrong with that!
