Pretty good selection of stuff. I experienced less then stellar customer service. I felt bad that I was disturbing the employees with my questions, don't worry it won't happen again.
What's with those miniatures just being thrown on the wall. Sure I like to spend 3 hours looking for a package of familiars just to find that they don't have it in stock- AArg!
I have no problem going to a store and paying 10% more for an item if I get good customer service. Here, I only get the first part.

I always stop by Games of Berkeley when I'm up north for work, just to buy something fun for my friends and co-workers. Like Nun Chucks, one of the punny plastic catapult sets (of the Cat A Pult family which literally sends tiny cats flying everywhere), or a retro tin coin bank ($7.95) emblazoned with "I'm Savin' Up to Quit My Job!" Or Mr. Potato Head dressed up as a bajillion different characters. Excellent for when you're feeling silly, need a white elephant gift or stocking stuffer, or want to start up a tradition of game night with some good ol' Operation or Mouse Trap and are too impatient to buy it online. Everything is either at retail price or slightly inflated, as most of the board games were. I believe you can get gift wrapping if you ask, and if the cashier is in a good mood. He/she usually isn't.
(I haven't browsed the store's immense collection of games like Axis & Allies and Dungeons & Dragons type of stuff. I just stick to the toy section to the left of the door by the cashier, where all the fuzzy microbes and plushy Ugly Doll-types and quirky wind-up desk distractions are.)

We love to roam this store and see what is new and what is interesting in game land.
We bought our Settlers of Catan games and extension games here. Our friends who have become addicted to Settlers came here to buy and had to wait for a back order. But those days are over ... the GOB has all of the Settlers of Catan that every game junkie needs.
This place is fun to visit for kids of all ages. The only problem is a typical Berkeley problem ... parking. Be patient, something will open up. Ask the parking angels to help and you may just find a spot so you can go play!

I've been working at UC Berkeley off-and-on for a little over three years, yet I just went into this place for the first time last week. Let me just say that I'm really glad I didn't discover it sooner. Man, this place makes me feel like I'm fourteen again. Yes, that age is correct. Back when I wasn't smart enough to understand D&D (I'm still not), so I made up for it by playing games like Wiz-War, Heroes Quest, Axis & Allies, and Shogun. The problem with not being fourteen anymore is that although I still like to play all these games, I now have money, which is bad. So I'm trying to avoid this place from now on, though I think I'll get sucked in again.
It's got a good selection of dork games, cheesy trinkets, and plain old fun boardgames. You don't find many game or toy stores that do each category so well.

This place is pretty massive. It has a great selection of thousand things to subject your children to. Any place that carries those plushie microbes is cool with me. The games section is extensive, and the puzzles are challenging and fun.
Only down-side: pretty much retail prices, which are insanely inflated on a lot of this stuff.
But so much fun for kids of all ages, you won't care!

When I was in high school and college, GOB was the place for your gaming needs. In their previous location on Shattuck on the same block as the Kress building, they had everything and I mean everything for Roleplaying, wargames, miniatures, etc. They had a complete set of these obscure miniatures for an obscure game that I played. Racks and racks of treasures. I wax nostaligic. Heck, I even went shopping at their Addison St. location that was really small but cozy.
Where oh where did GOB go? Its new location is smaller than the big store in its last incarnation. The staff has been replaced by a STAPH member who shall remain nameless that is in deep need of Dale Carnegie. You get served a rolling of the eyes and dirty looks along with your D&D module. I really welcome being treated as an annoyance when my purchases go to fund whatever it she does in her spare time. I'd live with her bitterness to make a purchase, plus I could go to Top Dog for a bock or a cal.
Now we are going into "this is the last straw" territory. There is an antiAmerican display in their window that is infuriating to me but in keeping with the Berkeley ethos. They have the right to hold such views and I have the right to not shop there. Its a shame, Games of Berkeley was an institution.
Great selection so so prices
You can find what you are looking for in this store. And as a game addict i really appreciate this. Games are just so expensive. I guess I can't blame it on games of berkeley but man, like 30 bucks for scatagories. There is no way it costs more than 5 dollars to make the game. Come on Milton, cut the common man some slack.
We go to games of berkeley after we visit jupiter on the way back to the car. My kids love it. We can try out new games and we usually end up buying something. Really cute section with party favor type toys but I think it's a little pricey. it is fun to browse though. close to bart.
Today one of the boys went to a sleepover, one was invited to a movie, and one got special bonding one-on-one time with yours truly! We headed over to Games of Berkeley because games & toys are fun! Besides, we're kinda on a roll lately and cards & "Sorry" are getting a tad stale.
The store has everything and more (!!) one could possibly want in a gaming store. I had no idea there were so many choices!! If this review were based solely on merchandise, an easy 5 stars, hands down. I'm knocking off a star, tho', based on customer service. I came in, looked around, kept my 12 year old son near by, did not ask questions, and promptly arrived at the register to pay for 3 items. The large, irate AA woman who rang up the sale could not have been less pleasant. The only other job she may be qualified for (in my opinion) would be in the Oakland DMV, where the rudest women in the known universe are known to collect a paycheck for giving attitude all day. I digress....she asked to ring me up, then when I moved to where SHE was standing, she rolled her eyes & said " Down here"..indicating another register.
Okay...I'll play along...then she kept checking me out as tho' I were shoplifting. It's downtown Berkeley, and I know they have their share of trouble, but sheesh, Lady, I'm in there with my son & a wallet, in shorts...not your shoplifter type.
She asked to see ID when I gave her my credit card. I was about to say wtf, but Impressionable Kiddo Numero Uno was there, so I behaved. After this debacle, she TRIPLE CHECKED my signature against my drivers' license. Could you get any more insulting?? I think not.
Then this individual had the gumption to ask if I wanted a bag...
Well, gee, no, I will attempt to shove all the items we just purchased into my minuscule and decorative pocket! Crap!! What happened to customer service??
Anyway, it just happened to be our particular luck to get this "sales assistant". You'll recognize her when you walk in. She looks like Lee "The Refrigerator" Perry, but without the smile. Steer clear. Stick to the games & such, avoid this individual and you will have a swell time. The 4 stars are for the breadth of variety, the layout, and the organization. It's clean, tidy, and bright without being fluorescent. They really need to do some sort of "team building" game or something tho', because there's one particular person who is not down with the team spirit.

I can't walk past this store without stopping in to play with the shelves of cute, little windup toys near the cash registers. I think I am addicted. Also, GOB has a good collection of basic kites, jigsaw puzzles, board games, and frisbees. This is a fun place to shop for gifts for yourself or for kids (seriously, I never know what to buy for the offspring of friends/family, but always find something here). It is also VERY conveniently located above the Downtown Berkeley BART station.

You know those horseshoes that are chained together with a ring in the middle that you have to remove?
They have stuff like that here.
They also have Jenga, and dart boards, and marbles, and all sorts of exotic games. Once, a LONG time ago, I bought a golden Slinky in a green velvet box for my very first girlfriend on her birthday. I also bought countless lead figures for the Warhammer 40,000 role playing game. I never actually got around to playing it, but I loved painting the figures.
Games of Berkeley is also a cool place to kill some time if you're waiting to see a movie in the Shattuck area...just don't bring food or a bag with you that you would mind checking at the desk.
Apparently people who like games are also dirty, rotten thieves.

GOB I do love you I do. You have wonderful games the totally rock my world. Ur a quirky lil store that brings out the kid in me and reminds me that I used to kick ass in Uno and should probably take it back up again. I have just one complain my dear dear GOB.
Every Monday right around 5 you harbor my boyfriend and all his friends in a drafting of Magic the Gathering or MTG as it is more affectionately referred to. I miss him GOB bring him back to me. Close down for a month or two so I can remind him why we are so happy together. What is it that you have that I dont GOB? I mean WTF?!
::sigh:: I know its not really you GOB b/c u have my best interest in mind. So maybe I'll just try to work on the boyfriend or maybe I'll just take up MTG and play alongside him! YAY!

I went to this store two days ago and I love it! They have a huge selection of games, puzzles, card sets and the largest selection of RPGs I have ever seen in one place. While I have seen stores with larger selections of tabletop miniatures, this store has one of the better collections, if only because they aren't coming across as mainly a wargaming store.
I also liked how the cashiers interacted with the customers in line instead of just keeping it a strictly business transaction. I would definitely be back, sooner than my wallet and budget would like I imagine, lol.
I took the BART in, so I can't really say how parking would be, but the prices were about average, and they did have an awesome clearance section in the RPGs, which I haven't ever seen anywhere.
I see some people have complained about the poor customer service, but I think the workers were really too busy to be right with everyone. There were just too many people there, and they had someone watching and checking bags and I think 2 others at the registers. They were nice and they kinda reminded me of puppies, they were very excited about everything people were bringing up, lol.
All in All, I am giving it a full 5 stars, because even now, I am wanting to go back and buy a few more things.
Any place that carriers the hand-carved, $400 dollar version of Settlers is alright by me. Although they didn't have it out on display like some awesomer game stores will. They did have some expansions and stuff for Settlers of Catan that I haven't seen anywhere else, so kudos for that. Seemed like any type of game ever made is available here. Even some disc golf discs.
The guys were working were talking about the dorkiest sounding stuff ever....perfect! I wouldn't want anyone else recommending my nerd purchases.
I love this store because of what is inside of it. They have a fantastic puzzle section (and I LOVE puzzles) and numerous other fun strategy games and whatnot.
However, the staff has never once been very kind. They shuffle you through without asking how things were or if they can help you. I know they're dorky, but hell, I'm dorky and I know I can be nice to people.
Despite the poor customer service, I do love this store because it's so much fun to go inside and look at all the wonderful games... and normally walk out with one!
They have everything here! They have "german" games, so I bought the entire Settlers of Catan series at a great price, and they're one of the few retailers that have Wall Street Spin from WallStSpin.com. I was impressed.

I am so crazy about jigsaw puzzles.... in fact some may say that i have an obsession. my mom thinks that if i spent as much time studying as i do on jigsaw puzzles i would have a nobel prize to my credit already. i just completed a 3D San Francisco one with 12 pretty Victorian houses and cable cars in it! This place is one of the few places in bay area you could find a wide collection of jigsaw puzzles and their prices are pretty fair.

GoB have been with me through my various short-lived stages:
+the domino stage (1 day)
+the jigsaw puzzle stage (a few months)
+the Pictionary stage (2 nights)
Well, i guess just through three stages.
However, I met one of my best friends here: a stuffed lamb puppet. I love him so much. I also like to go there and make the stuffed animals lip synch to music. Hey: I'm pretty cool. They have a fine stable of stuffed animals and animal puppets: usually three racks bursting with new friends!
They have nearly every variation of Uno and Monopoly and "mind puzzles." A wall full of jigsaw puzzles. Their selection of origami paper and books is excellent. It is easy to kill some time browsing through all the novelty items and tiny figurines, and while I usually stay away from the more hardcore "gaming" area, if you needed those multi-sided die, they got a lot of 'em.

April C. is right. she is absolutely crazy about puzzles. i hadn't seen anything like it before i met her but she isn't lying. now me being very close to her this obsession of hers has trickled into my life as well.
had you told me 6 months that i would have so much fun drinking screwdrivers and putting together a jigsaw puzzle, i would have said "what!!!!!!!!!!" but this was the case. she confessed to me her puzzle fetish and within a couple days she got me to do a puzzle with her.
i have to tell you though that when going to the games of Berkeley with a jigsaw aficionado be prepared to be there a while. they have a large selection of everything games, and a large selection of puzzles to. the staff was very friendly albeit dorky (i am the biggest dork around believe me i am NOT knocking them) and most of the time you can find them playing some kind of game that looked almost like D & D. i spent about an hour there and looking through the store i say they are well equipped. from those figurines you paint to models to magic tricks they have it all.
i grew up here in the bay area and have walked by this store probably over 1,000 times and never went in until she took me there to get a puzzle. i was surprised how much fun i had assembling a puzzle of San Francisco, and well of course getting completely tanked on screwdrivers. it reminded me of an earlier time a more innocent time a simpler time. Eh, who am i getting, i recommend this to all, get tanked with a cool person and put together a puzzle. you'll be surprised how much fun you'll have.
I used to love this place back in the day when I would cut school, hop on bart and haul ass to the Berk to smoke and hang out. But even then I found the selection (while huge, mind you) to be a little Juvenile...even for me as a 17 year old. Jump 8 years into the future and I still feel the same way...although I do have a soft spot in my heart for puzzle/strategy games and this place has plenty.
Excellent puzzle selection. Some of the puzzles i recall seeing last time: unicorns, popular historical art, haunted ships in the heat of battle, landscapes, fantasy scenes...dare I implore you to try 5,000+ pieces?!?!? Always entertaining to spy on the D&D Dungeon Masters that peruse the Rules Supplements and Maps.

I don't think I've been here yet where I didn't walk out with a game.
They have an incredibly large selection of games and toys. The prices seem pretty reasonable -- though online is still cheaper. But it's nice to be able to look at games in person. They carry all the good stuff from Rio Grande, Days of Wonder, etc. It's easy to lose an hour or more in here just looking around.

I used to remember this place fondly, before they changed locations.
It used to be a little ghetto/grass roots... geeky nerds scheming in the back about their stupid decks of 30 plague rats and trying to scam you out of good cards in trades.
Now it is along the lines of a typical game store... not sure if that is a good or a bad thing... I always feel bad for game stores these days because they are so dependent on foot traffic... and game stores like this are heavily dependent on the knowledge and expertise of the staff that work there.... most of which are along the lines of social deviants with knowledge in some areas, multiple weird piercings, and often a condescending demeanor.
But it's hard to find game stores these days... and this one is soso now... heavy on some of the party games... a pretty good selection of puzzles if I remember correctly, and fun for the whole family.....which might be good for you Cranium players, but a little on the weak side for the heavier strategy types along the lines of twilight imperium, decent, and powergrid.
Prices aren't too bad.. .typical retail. Parking kinda sucks along with the rest of the area.

Remember the days before video games? Yeah, neither do I... but I bet they were flippin' sweet. Or rather, they would've been if my folks had the arsenal of time wasters that Games of Berkeley packs, at their disposal. Upon initially arriving in Berkeley, the first thing I noticed when exiting the Downtown Berkeley BART station, aside from the fact that every other person was Asian (sweeeeeeeeeeet), was Games of Berkeley, strategically occupying arguably one of the most valuable pieces of real estate in Downtown at the corner of Shattuck and Center. Wondering how it compared to the Game Preserve in Fresno (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), I wandered in to discover a shop that proudly wore its "No, seriously. I'm a NERD." badge everywhere you turned. And unlike the Game Preserve, I didn't feel like I was going to contract a disease from touching some of their products or that the owner was going to hex my penis off if all I did was browse. The store is bright, spacious, and CLEAN. Rows and rows of board games ranging from the classics (Monopoly, Risk, and all their "special edition" variants), to the obscure ("Doom" the boardgame? Word!), to that most holy-of-holies, that category of board game that will turn even the most jaded hipster into a willing nerdbag slave: the Resource Management game (ala "Settlers of Catan"). Sorry kiddies, it doesn't matter how much American Apparel you enshroud yourself in, you are defenseless. I'll have you sweating all the coke out of your pores as you wheel and deal for that coveted piece of Ore, bitches.
So yeah, they have board games.
Card games more your flair? They've got'em in DUCKETS. Everything ranging from gear for your Beer-guzzling-smoke' em-if-ya-got-em-cuz-the-wi fey-is-away poker parties to expansion decks for your Red-Bull-amped-cheeto-fingered-oh-crap-tonight-is- when-I-was-supposed-to-hook-up-with-Terra-Patrick- online! Pokemon gaming sessions.
I've picked up a ton of offbeat card games here that have always turned out to be mass crowd pleasers for when that late night drinking session at the apartment starts getting a tad lethargic. A simple, funny, and complete smartass game like "Chez Geek" might just be what the Nerdbag Doctor ordered.
If talking in strange voices and wearing getups that adults are only really allowed to wear on Halloween or to conventions is more your bag, they've got a ton of Roleplaying resource books and miniatures to keep you busy until the second coming of Elminster himself.
THEY ALSO HAVE FRISBEES FOR FRISBEE GOLF! This is especially cool since it forces the more board game-wary fratboy crowd from Cal to make nice with the general population and realize that they too, are in fact, nerds.
One thing that my parent's generation had going for them was that the games they played were inviting *and* inclusive, not the solitary frag-fests that define our current gaming culture. My love for video games aside, playing with other people IN PERSON is actually quite fun. Seriously. Games of Berkeley is doing its part by offering products that try to keep people connected and interacting with each other, even if it is under the guise of my Pikachu smashing on your Lizardon.
Pika Pika!

Great local gaming shop.
They've got almost everything, and what they don't have you can order.
Um, except they didn't stock Warlord CCG. Oh well, nobody's perfect.
They have been taken over by the d20 RPG craze, but someday that'll pass. Either Hasbro will give up trying to make games for adults, or the next best thing will come along.
No computer games though -- IMO this is a good thing. Face to face, keepin' it old school!
This place is an awesome gaming store. They are well-stocked on card games, roleplaying gear, frisbees and just about everything else a gamer could need.
As said by Casey S., parking can be a pain, but it is worth it.
When I'm not buying games online this is my first choice of the local game stores. The prices aren't bad and the selection is pretty much the best you'll find. Their strengths are many and they include:
-Small card games by makers like Looney Labs and series like Bang, Cheapass Games, and Munchkin.
-Puzzles
-Strategy games, even obscure stuff way beyond Settlers and Carcassone
-Puppets
-Little toys and gifts (stocking stuffer things) like rubber ducks, game key chains, wind-up sushi
Kid's games
The downside is that they have a manager who has the personality of a 2x4. I take that back - I'd rather talk to the 2x4. She always has a rude, condescending tone to her voice like you're bothering her to have to ring up your purchases.
UPDATE:
Lots of cool stuff on my latest visit including:
-Spin wheel for "What would a zombie do?" (Sample answers: Plod, Eat brains) and "What would a Scotsman do?" (Sample answers: Kick a sheep, Wrestle Nessie)
-Lots of pirate stuff
-Lots of mini catapults (zombies, nuns, etc.)
-Lots of weird gummy stuff (bacon, tapeworm, and my favorite, gummy haggis)

Mage (?) knights and other fads since toddler hood.
I love the so called nerdy manager/owner and his salespeople....
they have always been friendly and enthusiastic! But I am relieved
to hear that the one grumpy woman is not just grumpy to me.
After 10 visits in a row she was consistently grumpy so I just ignore
her and try not to let those "grumpy" cooties jump on me.
Lots of RPG games and other stuff that is way too cool for me,
My out-of-town brother spent 2 hours here! Ah yes, that

Pretty cool place if you like games. I myself am a nerd so it was a pleasure to walk into this place. They have a great variety of things, from hardcore gaming gear to the casual "Mmm, I think this might be fun" selection. I didn't really talk to any of the clerks here so I have no idea if they're cool or not. Sorry couldn't help you on that one. If you are ever in the neighborhood, you need to stop by this place.
Their selection is top notch for a game store in the bay area. I like to visit this place before I order the stuff from Amazon. HAHA just kidding...sorta. The owner guy is cool. He really understands the business. If he's around count yourself lucky. He's a great resource. The other 15 year olds who run the place are hit or miss. That one lady is ok, although she happens to be in a perpetual bad mood.
If you're new to gaming you'll probably love this place though.

I love this store, I come here to find what ever weird RPG book I need or any kitchy gifts for almost any occasion. A fun store the employees are cool, a few became some of my best friends (they no longer work there) But I still have I warm fuzzy spot in my heart for this great place.
Over all its gaming spaces and selection make it the best spot in the east bay for games of all types.
A nice brick and mortar game store that I frequented. Sure, it'll never be as cheap as ordering online, but you get instant gratification and you get to hold the stuff first. Plus, it's easier to return stuff if there's a problem.
They used to have a 10% discount membership card if you purchased a total of $100 of stuff, but they discontinued it.
They also had daily events where you could play or learn new games although I never actually went to one.

This is the best brick and mortar game store that you can find. They have an unsurpassed collection of Chess and Go books. They have all the latest party games that your cool friends have. They have kites, frisbees (both recreational, and for disc golf), juggling equipment, and more. If you walk into this place, you'll surely find something that you like.
The employees are D&D weird, but they're mostly helpful and know a lot about the products in stock.
That Dave guy doesn't know what's he's talking about. There are a great many strategy and RPG games in GoB, and they have only been increasing over the years. GoB tries to carry every RPG in print, and most strategy and german origin games. He must have only been looking at the front of the store or something. Maybe he was looking at used or out of print. If he asked the staff about what he was looking for, he might have gotten an answer. Sometimes companies halt manufacture of a game and you can't get it for several months. This is not the fault of the local store! If you compare the store to how it was 5 years ago, when the new owners took over, it has VASTLY improved. I can understand about staff complaints, but you cannot complain about the selection.
