Even on a Sunday afternoon in June Galveston State Park was not too crowded today.

I highly recommend getting a Texas Parks Pass so you don;'t have to pay the $5 per person (not carload) that is the usual admission. But, the high admission keeps the crowds away.

As of 6/09 the campsites weren't yet available and only a washoff in front of everyone on the way back to the car kind of shower is available and portopotties--but I'm sure they will be up and running eventually.

There are a lot of seashells on this beach, as it's a few miles from the seawall.

If you go to the beach to relax and are more family oriented than east beach--this is a great beach.

To get away from the crowds at the other Galveston beaches, try visiting Galveston Island State Park.  Without a seawall, there are only sand dunes to protect the facilities at this park -- which were wiped out in the late 1990s by Tropical Storm Frances.  However, they are in the process of restoring them with the use of Christmas trees (!).

The camping facilities provide level campsites, but there were too many RV sites for my tastes.  I prefer a more primitive, scenic camping area...but it -is- useful.

I went here once in October, when it was a bit too chilly to swim, and I will never forget it.  It's totally worth visiting Galveston Island State Park if only for this reason -- at night, walking along the beach, I thought my eyes were deceiving me.  The water surface, especially around the waves, were *twinkling*.  When I looked down at my feet in the sand, I discovered I was also leaving *glowing footprints*.  Bioluminescent microorganisms in the ocean, something I've never seen before!  It was really cool; I wonder if it was just that time of year or...?

[By the way:  Galveston's water is not brackish or dirty.  The brownish color is due to the naturally occurring brown algae in the water at that part of the Gulf of Mexico.]
