I work a couple of blocks away from Galleria and probably visit this deli/market maybe once a week. The main reason being that the area doesn't offer to many options (especially healthy options) for lunch. I've tried a few of the sandwiches and really wasn't thrilled, they were okay. And everything seems to be too pricey.
However I do have some good news, the reason I frequent Galleria at least once a week. They have a hot food section with lunch specials. I get a nice piece of chicken breast, steamed veggies, and mac n cheese for $4.99. Now, that's a deal. However, I recommend you go early because by 12:45pm everything is usually gone.
Staff: Not the happiest people, they focus on turnover, how fast they can get your order and then get to the next customer. I find that to be a good thing.
The only reason this place makes any money and is in business is because of it's location!!! I live in River North not far from this place, and If I want to grab a quick bottle of wine, frozen pizza, whatever, my choices are basically this place and 7-11. I seriously have gone to 7-11 instead of the Galleria Market on a number of occasions simply due to the uncomfortable anticipation of the downer staff at the Galleria. They look like they are miserable behind the counter and I feel like it is their last day on earth by the way the interact at the check-out counter. And oh wow, don't you dare say hello, nod, or smile at them -- cold looks back in return.
As for their selection....it is OBVIOUSLY better than 7-11, but their "fresh foods" as in sandwiches, sushi, etc. suck so please don't bother, and all of their other stuff I'm sure is pricier than Whole Foods. Again, I am willing to pay for convenience, so I understand the price differentials - just pointing it out. I never feel good about giving this place business after leaving. Whoever is managing this place needs to get some focus to the lay-out, pay the staff more, or swap them out for people who are happy to have a job in this rough economy.
Also, they are confusing and misleading with their posted prices for wine and liquor. Who really takes the time to compare the unfamiliar sounding wine or champagne label with what is posted with the sales price? You figure if the bottle is RIGHT in the box that has the sale price labeled, then that is the wine that is on sale. Think again - you are likely to get to the counter and have them ring up a much higher price than you thought you were paying. Again, this is technically my fault because I didn't double check, but this is supposed to be a convenience place for people on the go, no?
A nice deli, ice cream counter, some great imported treats, an extensive salad bar - a pretty great place, though over priced.
If you get there in time for the hot lunch line, I definitely suggest my standard - the Tilapia, mac n cheese and steamed veggies! Just don't take the last piece of fish, it's mine!
I work near this place and come here about once every two weeks or so. Their food counter serves up hot dishes and sandwiches. So far, I've only got the various paninis (all w/o cheese since I'm lactose intolerant). Their paninis are ok at best. They're just a bit more greasy than I'm used to. The soups are all passable... bland is the key word here. A panini, small, soup and a water will run you about $12. They do have free wi-fi if you need it, btw.
If I could give it a 3.5 I would. I work just a bit down the street and find myself here often to take advantage of the salad bar. The salad bar is pretty food and much cheaper than Whole Foods (on Huron). It has all of the standard ingredients, nothing too out of the ordinary but everything is always really fresh.
The sushi isn't bad but it's the best. Nothing to get too excited about. If you work in the area and are looking for a place to grab a quick bite I would recommend stopping in.
I make a dang good salad. Seriously, I do... too bad I must like super heavy ingredients, and when I make one it costs me $10 for not all that big a salad.
For the area, it is a good option that is quick. If I just wanted a sandwich, I would probably call Potbelly. But if I want a salad, I know I can make one with numerous great, fresh, ingredients. The ingredients beat Jewel, and don't have to drive here... bonus for me.
Good salad bar- I love that they offer potato and pasta salads. The paninis are so-so, definitely not the greatest but not terrible either. The wine here has more of a mark up than some places (it's a deli- it's so be expected) but the mark up on some other grocery items is outrageous. Good place for a snack or a quick lunch.
I work in the River North area, and good lunch spots are hard to come by. Galleria Market is reliable and consistent. Their menu is gigantic and their selection of sides/other items (chips, drinks, etc.) is insane! Prices are fair, and service is fast. I highly recommend Galleria Market if you're looking for a simple lunch solution.
You know that feeling you get when you order a sammie at a restaurant, you get it and you think, "Wow. I could have made this better at home!"
That's what every experience at the galleria is like. The sandwiches are sub par. It's kinda pricey. The salad bar tastes old. The service has been fine...they're just not the talkative type, though.
Eh, it's close to my work, and I'm often very lazy, so whatever. One mediocre sandwich isn't going to kill me.
On the continued search for a good lunch in the River North Area (hint to any one out there interested in starting a new business), since there are very limited choices, I stumbled upon this place. I have to say, I was impressed. Let me start by saying, I love the little deli places in Chicago, so just walking in made me happy. Then there were tons of choices from hot meals, to salads and every sandwich option in between. I ended up with a chicken panini, since my first choice of Mac and Cheese sold out the person in front of me (boo). It was still a good choice. Tons of flavor and everything on it is fresh.
They have about 50 people working behind the counter, not the happiest people, but very efficient. And hey, they got my order correct, so who's to complain. The prices are about what I would expect from a good deli, all though the salad bar looked a little over priced.
I will definitely go back to this place, but seriously, if anyone out there wants a good place to start a restaurant, please think about River North...
I love this place. I work a few blocks away and frequently go there for salad bar lunches. They have more options than most places, plus they have a sandwich counter/deli. The staff is always very nice and friendly.
I work right next door to the Galleria. There aren't too many choices in this area to get a quick bite, but they do a pretty good job (IMHO). Today I had the buffalo turkey wrap. It was really good. I also love their chicken curry croissant and the veggie Panini is great for those who aren't into meat. The salad bar has a pretty extensive assortment on it and I don't think the prices are any higher than comparable deli's. Hell, corner bakery charges $5.99 & $6.99 for sandwich's every day, so I'm not going to cry over the $5.99 I just spent.
If you stop by in the morning, they have huge containers of yogurt that they mix with assorted fruits and granola for $1.95. It's an amazing deal considering the Starbucks around the corner charges $3.75 for their yogurt cup and it's nowhere near as big or packed with berries.
They're also one of the few places anywhere in the city that sells Propel Peach flavored water. I love that stuff and it's like searching for the Holy Grail in the city to find it.
I've found quite a few bargains in the wine department and sometimes they even have evening testing's (pretty nice for your corner deli).
I understand the vast complaints about the staff. It's true... the sandwich side folks are very standoffish. I almost never see anyone smile and they always look sort of pissed off. One day I said to the manager (at least I think he is) "smile! I promise it won't kill you". He looked up at me with surprise - laughed and said "it might". So I know they're approachable, they just aren't gona make the first move.
On the opposite counter there are two ladies that ring the register. Both are really nice (at least to me). They know I come in every day and they try to chat me up. They have an ATM and a DVD rental that usually has good movies. They also sell cards and misc. gift type items which has come in handy for me on occasion when I had no time to get out and shop.
I have to give them 4 stars for all the stuff they do right. It could be a 5 if the staff lightened up.
1.5 stars. While generally just OK, they have some serious quality control problems such as stale bread. Even worse, I bought some chicken salad there recently that had clearly gone bad prior to the purchase. It was disgusting and a health hazard.
On the plus side they have a nice variety of sandwiches and sides and a decent beer selection. All at premium prices however.
I work kiddy corner from here run in all the time for small stuff. Prices are decent.
The selling point for me though is they have 100 proof SoCo for pretty cheap.
This place is a liquor/convienience/cafe/sandwich place. It's a bit bizzare but I eat here cause it's close to work. The sandwiches are very inconsistent and a bit pricey. And there are over 30 to choose from as well.
The place is "eh". I can't speak to the market section, since I've only gone there to get lunch. The sandwiches are decent, but overpriced. You can spend well over $10 for a turkey sandwich, chips and drink. The salad bar is pretty fresh, with a good amount of ingredients, but I tend to think this is also overpriced.
Yes, the staff is not friendly, and the lines can be long and move slowly. There are much better sandwich/salad options in the neighborhood.
I went today looking for Hostess cupcakes during the 4:00pm blood sugar crash. Not a one to be found. No Twinkies, no Ho Hos, nothing of the sort. Lots of European cookies, but sometimes only that uniquely American combo of sugar and chemicals will do.
The place is just a disappointment.
It's a great neighborhood grocery.
I go for lunch and pick up some things for breakfast on occasion. The staff can be stand offish. Once they get to know you, they are really friendly. Don't be affraid to be the first one to start the conversation if you feel the need. I dig the Dindi. It is a turkey, swiss, and pesto panini for $4.99. Also, they have a DVD vending machine. On Monday's all movies are 99 (there's no cents key?) cents. They have a great wine selection, but can be a bit over priced. If you don't want to get taken on the vino, do your homework prior to buying it there. If you have any questions about the wine, the owners are great at helping. They have wine tastings on Friday's from time to time.
The paninis are decent, and the selection of drinks and chips is awesome. The guys that make the sandwiches seem pretty nice and accommodate picky requests.
The prices though are ri-freakin-diculous.
Today, I bought a chicken panini with a small bag of chips and a drink. Almost $12. For what?! Absolutely ridiculous.
Great salad bar -- I can stuff myself for $4
Great, cheap breakfast sandwiches
Good wine/cheese/bread selection
Limited everything else.
A perfect place to buy snacks/lunch for work
The staff is perfectly fine. The sandwich counter guys are not going to run up and give you a hug when they see you, but a) I wouldn't either and b) If the line is 20 people deep, they're busy! They don't care how my day is going and that is fine as long as they make my sandwich.
Boom-shaka-laka! I lurve the salad bar here... so many choices, so little time to decide, and all the while fresh! Imagine that a fresh salad bar mere steps from work.
They also have a huge selection of sandos, but I have yet to try one as the salad bar sings its sweet, sweet siren song as I walk in the door.
-Customer service is non-existent. Not friendly-no smiles-sometimes a mumbled "thank you" with no smile. They seem to be annoyed that they have to serve you (since day one).
-Sandwiches are basic fare/priced as White hen
-Shelf items are dusty. I doubt if they use the F.I.F.O. principle.
-Lattes are not good. I have had 2 in the last month. Here is what you can expect: Burnt-lifeless milk-heated above 160 degrees. Bitter espresso shots. The burnt-old milk was worse than the espresso shots. I also ordered a vanilla flavor because the other 5 flavors were not available. The flavor shot could not be tasted on either visit.
Good customer service and consistent products would bring them up a level.
Since I work pretty much next door, there really isn't too much of a choice when you want a quick bite to eat, drink or need cigarettes or something. The sandwiches are pretty good, although I started getting everything made as a wrap and it's much more digestible. I enjoy the turkey club wrapped in spinach tortilla. It's a bit on the pricey side ($6.99) for most of their sandwiches, but they are yummy.
I go there almost every day, so the staff know me by now...but I have had some complaints from co-workers that the staff is not friendly. I think it's a cultural thing. I recently went there once and the guy in front of me walked away in a huff complaining about the staff's attitude...but when I walked up, I had no problem. They're not going to smile at you. They just give you your food and send you on your way. If you need that much support, try my therapist down the street. If you need a sandwich, Galleria can help you.
Wine selection- decent, they have tastings every Friday.
Cheese selection- ehhhh. No Parmigiano Reggiano.
Drink selection- great. Lots of cool waters and fruity bevs.
This place tries to be an upscale market, and for things like wine I suppose that's OK. But since it's opened it seems like they're constantly changing and trying new things to carve out a niche. A year ago I liked this place, but lately the prices for things like produce or groceries are really high, there doesn't seem to be a lot of business/turnover and the products have been around a while(look for dust on 'em), the staff is rude when they ring you up, and overall the place seems kind of dirty (do they use soap when they wipe things down?). With so many nice options in the city for this kind of stuff, I wouldn't go here if it wasn't very convenient.
I work right around the corner from this market/deli. Every sandwich I have had there is delicious! The turkey pastrami pita and panins are especially tasty! The prices are a little pricey for a lunch spot, but this is typical in this particular area.
Not somewhere worth going out of your way for, but if you live/work in the area this is a good spot for a snack or even lunch. I've shopped at their market on many occasions (usually when in the area), but have never tried them for lunch until today. At the recommendation of my friend I ordered an egg and cheese sandwich. I prefer the egg and cheese sandwiches at New York City Bagel and Brett's Kitchen, but this one did the trick for today. The service was pretty slow (and they weren't even busy). I probably won't be rushing back for lunch, but a nice option when Brett's Kitchen (just around the corner) is closed.
:-( that is all.
Eh. I am reviewing this place as a lunch spot, not a corner store and it's very eh. Their sandwiches are alight, I've never had one that was especially tasty. Their salad bar is alright but doesn't have avacado like nearby delicious. They do have a pretty good fruit selection and sometimes I like to just get a little container of fresh fruit from the salad bar. Pretty decent wine selection, and they always have lots of bottles on sale but I think the prepared food pretty much sucks (and is really overpriced)
This is a great upscale corner market! They have catered events for my former company and their food was amazing. They have an excellent fresh mozzarella sandwich and their wine sommelier is so helpful and lovely. I would strongly recommend this place for a take out lunch in the area!
I used to work a couple blocks from Galleria, and frequented their deli for lunch. The meat and cheese for their sandwiches are sliced fresh and made to order. They have other options, such as a make-your-own salad bar and sushi, as well as a selection of other basics. Additionally, this is a great location to find rare wines. Unfortunately, it's pretty expensive, and their cookies are not so great.
This is such a cute little supermarket.. and they have free wine tastings 3-6!
Its not cheap, but they carry a lot of quality stuff. They also have plenty of wine tastings. Good place to buy supplies for a upscale picnic, lots of bread, wine and cheese.
No one's reviewed this in a year, which is weird as it's always packed, so I'll throw my $0.02 in. I work around the corner and get lunch from here like 2-3 times a week. Best value? Smoked turkey and cheese on a hoagie, $4.99. Ask for it how you want it (no mayo, honey mustard, etc) and they'll accommodate. Also good: chicken club, turkey pesto panini, etc.
A good selection of beer here. Lots of different wines to choose from too, as well as european cookies. A great place to pick up what you need to finish the night.
A nice place to stop and pick up some beer that you can't find at a lot of other places. Decent prices and a pretty sizable selection of both beer and wine. Only open till 10 though.
Perfect place for a good cheap salad bar... They have bulk Jelly Bellys, which is much appreciated. They also have a good variety of sandwhiches and soups. The staff is definitely a bit short and smile-less with customers, but they are hardly insulting or rude.
A nice big corner market that is really on the corner! It carries european and gourmet food items and lots of wine. They even have wine tastings for free. If you need cheese and crackers, and other accoutrements to a nice meal or summer picnic, this is a nice place to stop.
