I'm always on the lookout for a good cheesesteak. And I've tried others around town. But I always go back to the best, and the benchmark -- Gaglione Bros.
Mushroom Cheesesteak & Garlic Fries is the best combo. (I believe it's the most popular too.) -

Yum, yum, yum! My boyfriend order a Pepper Steak sandwich, I ordered the Mushroom Cheese-steak sandwich, & we shared the garlic french fries.
I preferred the Pepper Steak sandwich because it was spicy but the mushroom cheese-steak had great favor also :) Probably will try the Works sandwich next time.
We both agreed we would be back and that this would be a great place to go after a Chargers game. Hope you try it out! -

I struggle to give them two stars. The only reason I do is the "add your own stuff" bar for those who eat in the store.
The cheesesteak was marginal at best. It really amazes me that I got so little for $15. I was insulted.
But, hey, the kids who work there were sure having a blast.
Bathroom to wash your hands? The staff didn't have a clue where I could wash my hands before I left to go back to work.
I say "Thank you... have a great day" as I leave.
Counter girl says "yup".
That sums it up. -

If you like cheesesteaks, this is your spot. I looked for years for a nice cheeser in this city and nothing was standing out. I finally found Gaglione Bros, and ironically right near my home in Point Loma. I usually get a 12" cheesesteak with Mayo. Good stuff.

I love the cheese steaks here. I am always popping on by to order a whiz wit. ;) Another thing I like about this place is the fact that they have tastykakes. It's always hard to find them if you are not back East, but they always have them in stock.
If you are ordering the fries, you will only need one order for the 2 of you since hey give you a ton. -

Best garlic fries ever! yummmm! The kind were you can actually scoop up the chunks of garlic! I also love their cheesesteaks! Always a nice staff and never have to wait a long time for a delicious meal!

Its absolutely essential that first-timers to "The Gag" order the Cheez Whiz sub-sandwich and/or Cheez Whiz garlic fries. There's nothing quite like it. Its on a level we've not yet seen. Unhealthy? You bet. Tasty? "Tasty" doesn't begin to describe this slice of cholesterol heaven.
After this initial rite of passage, I recommend trying the "Sophia Loren" and "Chicken Ranch". They all come in 8", 12" and 18". 8" is sufficient for me.
Gaglione blows any other sub sandwich franchise out of the water. I've been coming here for several years, and have never been disappointed. IMNSHO, its a sure thing. -

My family was out in Point Loma doing something... maybe just finished a bike ride or something... and we went to Phil's BBQ for lunch. Nope! Line was too long so we circled back and went up the block to Gaglione Bros. Glad we did.
I ordered their build your own pastrami sub (HUGE fan of pastrami here) and the wife had their meatball sub. Yeah, go figure, this place specializes in cheesesteaks and neither one of us had one. No matter... our subs were great.
My pastrami was loaded with pickles, and peppers, and spicy stuff. It was very tasty. If I has d a complaint, it was that it didn't have nearly enough meat. Not very generous on that count.
My wife's meatball sub was also quite good... hot and melty and gooey with cheese. Very sloppy and messy in a good way.
I was a bit shocked by how long it took them to make our order. Two subs and I swear we waited almost 15 minutes for them. Not an eternity, but much longer than we should have waited for 2 subs. God help them during lunch rush hour.
Anyway, good stuff. We'll be back if we're ever in the area again. -
Review from Greg E.
I live in La Mesa and I drove all the way over here just to have some more of their cheese steaks. The Gaglione Brothers are definitely doing a great job here. The meat to bread ratio is top notch and the garlic fries are definitely out of this world (make sure you have some gum or breath mints). I've also had the fries covered in Cheese Whiz and those are a hit as well.
If you looking for good quality cheese steaks, I highly suggest coming here. I hear there are other locations in the city; I will have to check those locations out if see if they are as consistent as this location.Listed in: Dining Out

Review from Robert F.
Ok, I really enjoyed it. I am constantly hunting for west coast cheesesteaks that can match up to Philly counterparts...and this was a pretty good offering.
My thoughts though....
- It has too much of a franchise feel in the place....I want a place to look like Pat's, not Steak Escape. It all feels a little sterile, not necessarily in cleanliness, but in character. And nothing that says Philly.....
- They are thin and skinny steaks here. When you get a legit one, it should be a little open, with whiz dripping on to your hand and look like its full of meat. These feel a little skimpy....even if you have a 12 incher.
- I liked the pepper bar....the relish and pepperoncini were good.
- Whiz fries are a must....
- They use rib eye, white american cheese, amoroso rolls.... but what I am trying to decide is how often I will trek to Sports Arena to have one. We will have to see....
- Would have been nice to wash it down with Yuengling...... -

One of my two favorite cheese-steak places in San Diego. Good size sandwich and the giardiniera is the added bonus here. Spic and very tasty. Mcgonagles is the other favorite spot in the south bay.......

Gaglione's has saved me on more than one occasion.
Not to get into any details, but there have at least been two occasions where intense alcohol has been involved and a good heavy cheesesteak has come to my rescue.
The meat has never been dry, the cheese is good, and they have the hot pepper relish that I absolutely relish (see what I did there?). The options they have for their sandwiches are pretty vast.
And every time I've gone, the staff has been extremely friendly. -

I've never actually been to Philly, but this place has the best damn Philly Cheeaesteak. I order everything "without onions" because I hate onions, except here. The place is small but comfortable, with outside seating for SD's perfect weather. The crew is very friendly and everything on the menu is delicious!

Ohhhh my goodness...if you want to die of a heart attack that was preceded by by the ultimate foodgasm, eat here. This was the best cheesesteak I've ever had. The smallest size sandwich (I think 8") is still huge. Garlic fries are super garlicky and buttery and oh so heavenly. And, they have a pepperoncini bar which made my sister all excited. She eats those bastards straight outta the jar.
This place can be hard to find, as Google maps tells you to go into an apartment complex (whaaat?) We drove around in circles and almost settled for Arby's, but thanks to my sister's determination and lure of a pepperoncini bar, we found the place in the same shopping center as Souplantation, Daddy-O's ( another foodgasm heart attack) and Denny's facing W. Mission Bay drive (which turns into midway) as you get off the 5. Now I can't help going there every time I'm in the area. And, I'm going to need a few stents sooner or later... -

What can I say...wow!!!!!! Came here from the first time the other day and dude, I am hooked. I would go now if it weren't closed. I got the Cheesesteak with mushrooms. It was delish! Had great seasonings, had some good meat juice. This is pretty darn close to what I had in Philly. :D

**** FOR CHEESE STEAK ONLY ****
Another review that I just can't hop on the bandwagon for.
For all of the hype their Cheese Steaks get...they suck. Not a ton of meat and the cheese tastes like it came out of a can....definitely NOT natural tasting. A mushy Cheeze-Whiz would better describe it. Better off getting Subway or Quizno's for the price...and quality. -

This place is a hidden gem.
Hands down, the BEST philly cheese steaks ever!!
The Baja is definitely my favorite and the mushroom is amazing as well.
I cant wait to try "the works" -

Sub was good, but I didn't appreciate that they said they were no longer accepting the yelp deal which is free fries with any sub. They need to remove that yelp deal from their page so it's not misleading.

Gaglione Brothers offers THE BEST Cheese Steaks! Everything at Gaglione Brothers is mouth-watering!! The Cheesesteak sub is particularly appetizing. The meat is incredibly flavorful and juicy.
Location:
Gaglione Brothers Famous Steaks & Subs is located on Point Loma Blvd in the Sports Arena area. It is a smaller space with less than 10 tables inside and maybe two outdoor tables.
Menu Items:
Subs sizes offered are 8", 12" ($9.99), and 18" ($13.99) Regular, Jalapenos, or Cheez Wiz Cheese Steaks to "The Works" (includes mushrooms and cherry peppers). Fries offered include Regular, Garlic, Jalapenos Cheez, etc. The fries are thick and a great complement to the subs. The Cheez Wiz is soo tasty! All items are cooked when ordered but it does not take too long to wait.
Jalapenos Bar:
Gaglione Brothers also has a jalapenos bar with banana peppers, cherry poppers, etc! Their banana peppers are super spicy (I think this is due to the fact that the banana peppers are marinated in juice. They offer mild jalapenos as well.
Customer Service:
The employees at Gaglione Brothers are super friendly and will take the time to chat with customers. I love great customer service!
Tip:
Don't forget to unlock their Yelp Check-In deal for a free combo upgrade. That means free fries and a drink!
I love Gaglione Brothers and would recommend it to all for great Cheese Steaks. -

Delish! Tender, juicy meat and awesome garlic fries. Sure it's not from Philly, but hey it's SD and this is a damn good sandwich! I go easy on the onions and add the sauteed mushrooms and oh yeah get there before 11:30 when the lunch crowd bustles in. FYI...bread is not hoagie style so please don't complain about it being skinny.
Tip: Ask for a side of cheese wiz with the fries...pure delight! -
Review from Anna N.
Came here for lunch with a the daily save coupon with a few others. They enjoyed the place as well.
Tucked away on the side of the Midway Towne Center, this place reminded me of those "small hole in the wall" places - an area with limited outdoor and indoor self seating where the indoor seating shared an area with the kitchen. I was surprised by the little self-serve mini bar with different types of peppers. They had labels for each type of pepper, but I didn't venture to try them all this time.
I got the 8" the works sub, which was good. The steak was sliced thin and generously stuffed into the sandwich, the onions were grilled but I didn't get much texture from them, the cheese was nice and melted, the mushrooms were nicely cooked, the cherry peppers added a nice subtle kick and crunch, and I added a little bit of sweet peppers from their self-serve pepper bar. I liked the steak. It had a good flavor and I didn't have any large bits of fat or tough bits of meat at all. The sweet peppers had a nice flavor to it. I wish there were a little more onions and cheese in my sandwich (I probably will request this next time because I believe it's more of a personal preference), but the overall taste and balance of ingredients was great. I really enjoyed the garlic fries. They had a crisp outside, soft inside, and smothered in garlic. It was a little greasy, but I really enjoyed the seasoning of it and the ample amounts of garlic.
I'll definitely be back again. -

Looks small but pretty filling. Garlic fries and sandwich combo is killer. Good quality stuff. I've had real stuff from Philly and this is pretty darn close.

Out of 5 sandwiches ordered, 1 was news worthy and that was the meatball. Its good! The fries... blah, the cheezwiz steak...mediocre at best. The Buffalo was OK, could have had more blue cheese in my opinion.

MMmmMmmMMM and MMMmmmmmMMmmmM!!
This place is YUMMYYY! Their Cheesesteaks here are one of the best and i highly recommend the Garlic Fries! Oh my goodness are they delicious! They are always covered in garlic just like they should be and their sandwiches are stuffed with steak and 'shrooms. They're definitely not stingy when it comes to their yummy food. The other great thing is that when you check in you get a free combo! Of course I had to take advantage of that. Also there's a free bar with peppers, relish, and pickles galore :)
Last but not least the staff is always so friendly and accommodating. They make sure you like your food and thank you before leaving. -

Ordered:
- 18" cheese steak
- garlic fries
This is a weird review from me because I was pretty disappointed in some aspects of trying out Gaglione Bros, but the day after sorta turned out okay.
I made a pick up phone order on a Friday early evening. The lady on the phone was extremely friendly and possibly was smiling while talking to me which I adored. I ordered 18" cheese steak with one GARLIC fries which she even tried to offer me garlic cheez fries which I kindly denied. Easy and fast to take the order and said it would be ready in 10 minutes.
When I arrived to the spot it was pretty empty and there was no rush to walk up to the counter and have my order ready to be picked up. I immediately could recall the girl behind the cashier as the one I placed the phone order with because there she was with her non-washable smile that made me want to keep smiling with her. A plus for kind friendly service, which was deceiving because she read my order and gave me my plastic bag of food. I take a peek inside and saw the long wrapped in paper sandwich and a small wrapped up hot dog paper tray which seemed like my fries. Offered me sauces and went with ranch and off I go to meet up with a friend to devour this well known cheese steak.
I almost usually check my pick up orders to make sure they got my order right, but for some reason the lady made me feel very sure she got the order correct. The receipt on the bag said so! Unwrapping the fries I immediately thought these look and taste like regular plain fries...I then called the place and asked how are their garlic fries cooked and the guy had said I would have noticed the garlic. So very bummed that I paid for garlic fries and not willing to drive back to have my sandwich cold by then he requested to have my number and email down to have the owner take care of it somehow...so I guess I'll have to see. But from there I was not too happy with my first time experience with them. But for some odd reason we LOVED the ranch sauce?! It didn't taste like your usual jack in the box or other fast food ranches! It had a delicious flavor that I drenched everything with it.
Going onto the sandwich, it was long and skinny. The bread didn't seem toasted or heated at all and I could tell there wasn't really much meat in the sandwich. First bite all I could tell you was doughy. Even my friend said the same thing. Couldn't really enjoy the meat because there wasn't enough of it and there was just too much bread. I would say if I wasn't that hungry I would have taken it back home, put it in the toaster oven to have the bread lightly toasted and I would have enjoyed it more. So leaving a little less than 6" left I took the sandwich home for the next day to try it out.
I was sure satisfied! Made the bread nice and toasty with a great crunch to it and I added more cheese because I love cheese. OOOOO this is where my 2 stars came from. Oh and the ranch too! I want that stuff in a jar size!
So not a fulfilling first time experience, but I guess I should have dined in, but that's no excuse either. Received great service but they charged me for something I didn't receive and an okay sandwich I had to fix up myself at home. Have to wait and see and possibly I'll do another review if I ever hear back from the owner?? I definitely love my steak and this was a letdown for me considering there wasn't enough meat and more bread. -

LOVE: Cheese Steak Hoagie!!!!!
Definitely one of my favorite sandwich places in San Diego. It just reminds me SO much of my childhood (Cosby Show, the FIRST Steak Escape at Plaza). I dedicate this poem to you...
Beautiful Sandwich are you,
With your oil soaking through and through,
Cheesy is every bite,
Always making me cheat on my diet,
SO CREAMY from the mayo,
SO JUICY from the tomatoes,
With that salty kick from your tender steak,
Craving you makes my heart ache,
Accompanied by the crisp of garlic fries,
A last meal from you would be heaven before I die...
Gaglione you're my FAVORITE!!!Listed in: SAND Box

San Diego, CA
We had a craving for a cheesesteak and had a daily deal coupon in hand, so we headed to Gaglione Bros. I had the 8'' chicken cheesesteak with the works (meaning mushrooms & cherry peppers). Others in the group had the 12'' steak cheesesteak with the works and the father joe (homemade meatballs, marinara, provolone, parmesan & parsley). We also had a side of garlic fries. They definitely didn't taste like authentic cheesesteaks. I'm used to the long slices of onion being grilled with the meat. These sandwiches had diced onions. Also the chicken in my sandwich was dry. I only ended up eating half of my sandwich and the other half is still in my fridge 3 days later. I loved all of the garlic in the fries, but sadly the fries themselves were soggy! The father joe sandwich was just okay.
This place is small and it was super busy on a Sunday afternoon. I do appreciate that they were quick with our order. They also have a couple of tables for outside seating.
Looks like Gaglione Bros. has a lot of fans, but I'm not one of them!Listed in: Sandwiches!

I am from Philadelphia. These guys make no claim to being from Philadelphia. But I always get tied up in a knot when people claim their local cuisine is never the same away from home. The fact is a Philly Cheese Steak is not that hard to make well and there are quite a few places in San Diego that do it well. Include on that list Gaglione.
One of the great things about this place is they also have a great selection of other well done sandwiches...they do say steaks and subs, not Philly Cheese Steaks and hoagies. So it really is a California take that just tastes good. Best of all they have a great pepper bar...that is a true Philly deli touch. -

Yet another new favorite lunch spot although, I should really avoid this place at all costs seeing that one meal could practically be my my entire caloric intake for the day!
One of the best cheese steaks I've ever had. I usually go with the cheese steak with jalepenos---not sure what its called on the menu with the garlic fries. The fries are packed with garlic and are not for you if you are planning on talking to or kissing someone without a handful of gum or a good run with your toothbrush.
Also, if you check into yelp on your phone, you get a free combo upgrade!Listed in: San Diego's…

I have not found a better cheesaesteak place in san diego. Just trying to is disappointing because i feel i could have had one of theirs. I usually opt for their chicken works wich is the chicken version of there cheesesteak w/ jalepenos and such. I do like the chicken better. The thing that sets these people apart though i believe is their bread. Also they have a check-in offer for free upgraded combo. Before coming here i was like cheese wiz? You crazy. Now bring it..

What I liked:
Garlic fries - must eat them immediately while they are hot and crunchy. I really enjoyed these.
So-so:
The sandwich - I ordered the largest sized Cheese whiz steak with onions. We did not eat there and by the time we arrived at our destination to watch the sun set, the bread was soggy from the grease and cheese sauce. It's a skinny sandwich and the meat seemed somewhat dried out. I was expecting something outstanding for the price of the sandwich. Nothing stood out as far as flavor of the sandwich. I'm not sure what a good Philly cheese steak is suppose to taste like but this wasn't it for me. The restaurant was extremely busy and the tables inside out out were full of customers. The staff was very friendly. -
Review from Amy B.
So, being Philly born and raised, I'm always skeptical at "Philly-style" cheesesteak places. It kind of reminds me of when food labels say "naturally flavored" and you know it means "full of chemicals". So imagine my surprise and horror when my San Diego colleagues excitedly said that they ordered cheesesteaks for lunch!
I got my usual (well, my usual for when I'm back home anyways): a cheesesteak with provolone (NO ONE eats that nasty cheese wiz) and lettuce. And it was--gasp--not bad! It's definitely no Jim's, but it wasn't too greasy and there was a good meat to roll ratio. And even though the roll wasn't on an Italian market roll, it was decent.
If you're in San Diego, this place is not a bad substitute to tide you over until you next real thing.
