I went for Supa Soul Sunday once and had a decent time. As an out-of-towner it was easy to find by the train. I thought that I saw that the cover was $5, but when I got there the unfriendly bouncer informed me that it was $10. I didn't really want to protest because I had never been there before, and maybe they hadn't updated their website - who knows.
Anyway, I get in and although it's pretty small the place was the kind of place I like to go to. Not too crowded, but limited seating and during the open mic, it was a little awkward just standing there, especially because I was alone. The acts that came on were great - except this one duo reminiscent of Rin& Tin from Brown Sugar. I had my normal scotch and ginger ($7) and after staying a little into the club segment of the night, I had to head back to my hotel.
The music was good, and it was somewhat diverse, but it reminded of places in Philly that I enjoy, so I'll definitely go again
My internal thoughts on a random Friday night in Chicago while inside the Funky Buddha Lounge:
9:30 PM - 10:30 PM
This place is great. Is that A Tribe Called Quest playing? Now Mos Def? This DJ is playing some great music. No one plays this stuff anymore. I'm really gonna have a great time here tonight. Hopefully it gets more crowded as the night goes on.
10:30 PM - 11:15 PM
Did the DJ turn the volume up? I can't even hear my friend as he screams into my ear. I hate having to nod my head and smile in approval when I have no idea what he's saying. And what happened to the good music? My body can't move fast enough to keep up with this 70s funk. At least it's more crowded. Some pretty ladies here tonight.
11:45 PM
Where did everyone go? Why is the dance floor empty now? I need to get out of here
Went here on my bday (a Friday night); it was free before 11pm--but that changes depending on the night so you have to check.
Great mix of people, live performances & DJs. LOTS of fun!
great event at funky buddha last night...bhangratheque! group called delhi2dublin. bhangra/celtic music. fiddler was fantastic. not as crowded as it should have been for such an amazing group. they should play at a bigger venue considering how many indo-pak-punjab people we have in chicago, not to mention how many irish music fans. look for them on youtube!
This place played good music to get the party started. For some reason no one went on the dancefloor until almost closing (on a Thursday) but we enjoyed the cocktails, the free hypnotic shots from the hypnotic promoters and the mixed crowd. Very mixed, and I'm coming from the Bay Area, so I was kind of surprised to see some filipinos and southeast asians up here in the midwest.
The music makes this spot the place to be. You will hear Biggie to E-40, mos def to too-Short, and all the sexy hiphop in between. A lot of great space to move around in and get your groove. A pretty diverse place of people, but definitely more hiphop heads. The drinks were greatly priced, especially if your visiting in from NY. A MUST place to stop by!
Outkast (pre-Speakerboxx/Love Below), Busta Rhymes, Biggie, Jay-Z (pre-Black album), and plenty of other goodies from my late high school through early college years. The drinks were OK, but were reasonably priced at$7-10 on average, and you weren't waiting in line forever.
Beware the usual $20 cover. Hopefully you get in with a party password or have a sympathetic bouncer and get that annoying cover waived. Tried to go here on a Friday night a month ago with 4 other lovely ladies, and FB insisted on the cover. Needless to say, we found other places in Wicker Park to go that night.
There are plenty of trendy bar/dance spots in the area, but the other places are often just decent music and large groups of people standing around. Loved the DJ and the is a great mix of people @ FB.
The music is always the best part of Funky Buddha. The DJs play some old school hip hop and sometimes transition over to the top radio plays, which I don't mind once in a while. It seems that everyone wants to keep dancing all night long, but sometimes you just can't resist those plush couches. The decor is absolutely wonderful and the colors are pleasing to the eye.
The drinks are reasonably priced, majority of the staff is friendly, and the crowd's pretty straight. The only thing that's keeping me from giving it 5 stars is the ridiculous $20 cover. There is some sort of entry password for reduced cover before 11PM, but really, when do you start your night that early? :)
I had a great time here. Great DJ and the drinks were reasonably priced. Of course the cover is out of control - $20 on weekends. But for a myriad of crazy reasons I got in for free. Dressed like ass because I didn't know I was coming here and couldn't go home, I didn't even think they'd let me in the door. Maybe they felt sorry for me. Or they liked my glasses. Either way, if you think about it, if you're here all night and the drinks are cheap you are saving money so the cover is worth it. One of the best dance clubs I've been to.
Despite my luck, the bouncers and door guys are strict as hell. You better follow the dress code and you better not start stuff with anyone in line, or the bouncer, or the girl getting cash, or you're not getting in.
Came here for my old friend Dan's show. Side note: Check out his band - Lovers in Arms, they're awesome!! Before the band came on, they put on a fun mix of old school and modern hip hop, mixing some party favorites with some great-but-not-as-popular stuff. I almost didn't want the band to come on, the music was so good (Sorry Dan!).
The decor isn't a swanky River North warehouse club-- its alot more homey and intimate. We sat along the wall on a squishy, booth like bench against the wall (no tables, though, this will come in play later in this review). It wasn't too bad for mingling and socializing.. until the crowd started coming in droves.
And they came. If you want a great crowd (and very dressed up) on a Thursday night, you've found your place. Really diverse (I wonder what everyone thought about Dan's band?) and really popular.
Unfortunately, the larger crowd affected our view-- instead of the nicely appointed bar and stage, we were stuck looking at a ton of.... asses (minus one star). Time to stand.. and having to work the next day, time to leave. Dan's set was done so it was perfect timing.
I'll be back to dance dance dance!
I've been coming to this place for many yrs now throughout the yrs. Well lately when I attend this venue I'm heading here on a weekday. No way do I make it out here during the weekend...its too insane. A 20 dollar cover is crazy. I like it free or nearly close to free.
Music is good. Have lots of fun when I go here during the weekday since there isn't that many people out and about here. Drinks can be crappy at this place. I like to get my $ worth. I'll pay extra to get a good drink but not here.
I really have a good time when I come out to this place. I like the music and the people are cool.
Oh no, i will never visit this place again. Hell no!!
First of all, i would like to say that the door man was attractive, brown, and tall...he was the best part of the lounge! The people were dressed casual i guess. We had to park about 10 minutes away on the street, and walk over.
Unfortunately, the cover charge was 20 dollars, and i was not happy about it....since we only spent about 20 minutes in there. My friends and i reluctantly went into this tiny little lounge and it was super crowed. I felt like a sardine in a can!!! People were dancing everywhere. I bought several watered down drink, and that was such a waste of money! There was no place to sit. I swear this lounge only has like 3 or 4 sofa, and i had to stand the entire time. Lastly, the smell was terrible!! The people smelled like sweat, menstrual blood, and pee...Yuck! It was just too hot in there....We couldn't take it anymore so we left fast!
I will never visit this place again!!
This place is cool if you like standing shoulder to shoulder with stanky smelling people dancing over you..if not, this place is not for you!! Shit, i went in there with my hair done, and came out frizzy as hell....i'm still mad!
Before you read my review, it is required knowledge that I DO NOT like clubs. Every once and a while I will get weird moods and venture out to one, but by no means will I ever make plans to intentionally go to one.
I happened in to Funky Buddha one night with a friend, and had a magnificent time. The atmosphere and decorations are great and gives a great feel to the place. The drinks are kind of pricey, but that's to be expected with any club/lounge.
I ended up coming back on Halloween as well. They had some MCs performing that night that were absolutely terrible, but it was still a good time. If I absolutely had to go to a club one night, this would be the one that I would select.
I have mixed feelings about Funky Buddha.
I'm not a dancer, nor will I ever pretend to be. I went here on a Friday night with a couple of friends on a Saturday night to check the place out...they were looking for a place to dance, and I was just looking to expand my knowledge of Chicago nightlife.
The good: drinks here are very reasonable, and they've got a good selection. The bartenders are also very accommodating and polite. The decor and atmosphere is fantastic. FB is a really chill place (imagine a dark hookah bar with DJs and you've pretty much got it). There's also a variety of music for varying tastes, and that's much appreciated.
The bad: $20 cover. Christ. The cheap drinks made up for this, but it was a hell of a shock at the door. Sure, it was a Saturday night, but it's been a long time since I've been asked for a cover of that amount. Also, the music on the main dance floor was horrible the night we went. People couldn't figure out how to dance to the music, and ended up spending more time lounging around on couches or cramming into the (drastically undersized) hip-hop room to salvage some sort of dancing out of the night.
Moral of the story? Check out who's playing there before you go, and be prepared for the steep cover. Other than that, Funky Buddha is a safe bet.
As always I love Funky Buddha and I always know that the DJ is going to get me out of my seat (yes there are plush pillows and sofas everywhere). This lounge is not like those wannabe club lounges, you come to chill and dance and get a lil something to drink... Some nights the Buddha is chilly (around 9-10p) but after 10p the bodies come in and it get stuffy and hot (drink plenty of water alcohol and heat does not mix lol). I've never seen altercations here and I hope it won't be cause the Buddha is where to chill. Recently last Friday I attended a Pajama Party here with a House Party 2 Kid N Play theme, there was no cover if you came in PJ's (yeah!!!), other than that me and my buddies could not do the Kid n Play dance because it was crowded but the music was live...What can I say? To avoid the $20 cover you need the password for that night so visit their website and add them as a friend on facebook. Otherwise, you can hit me up and we all can go out to the Buddha to dance dance dance!!!

As good as it get when it comes to down to earth nightspots in Chicago.
They promote themselves as the most diverse club in the city, which is very true and what I love about it most. I used to be a regular fixture at this place on more than 1 night per week. The best nights to go are on Fri & Sat and most Thurs. They always have great music and great DJs that can keep the party moving. Bartenders are ok, but the drinks can be pricey. Everyone that I have taken to this place has loved it thus far and always want to go back. I haven't gone that often this year, but that is no reflection on them.
I recommend this place to anyone that loves partying with a diverse crowd and having a great time in the process. I also recommend you take your out of town friends to this place, because in my experience my out of town buddies always remember the place and go to their cities and brag about what a great time they had at the Buddha!
It was not by choice or chance that I needed up at the Funky Buddha Lounge. Apparently, it's a popular hot stop amongst my Chicago constituencies. Whether it's the music being spun the DJ or the cheap drinks / shots. Something attracts them to this locale...
When first arriving @ Funky Buddha, the decor was the first to jump out at me. The fusion between a red velvet rock music lounge and an Asian Buddhist temple was the first thing that came to mind. At first, a confusion between whether partying or worshiping was be found upon me. After realizing that I was in a club, I opted to order a drink.
After about an hour of partying, I opted to leave Funky Buddha because of two reasons...
1) The music in excess of an audible decibel level that can be handled by normal human ear drums.
2) The ventilation of this establishment needs a lot of work! It was just too muggy!
Aside from the above, the environment is excellent for a non-pretentious hang out establishment for a few friends.
Finally! I've found a great hip hop club in Chicago!
Free cover before 11pm if you're on the guest list, which we got on without any problems simply by calling earlier on the same day. The interior's not big at all, but I enjoyed the unique decorations which gave the place a lot of character. The diverse, lively crowd was a lot of fun, and I had a blast shaking my groove thing with a couple of girl friends. Props to Stephanie at the bar for making me the strongest long island I've had in a lonnnng time.
Nice music, be preparred to reserve a table in advance, don't go without it. Music is really cool some old school rap and newest good stuff.
Definitely hit after doing the same with a bong.
My night at Funky Buddha is still hazy. Here are the highlights that I can remember:
- Free cover before 11 pm if you're on the guest list. Otherwise it's $20
- SO awesome hip hop music. I mean, none of that whoops, we're now doing a set of lame-o pop/techno/house.
- Fun diverse crowd that is unpretentious!
- Stephanie, who poured us the strongest long-islands ever. Who has a hot tat on her right forearm. Who thankfully poured some ice waters for us after those long-islands, fierce dancing, and subsequent major dehydration. And the lip lock... (mmm, call me, honey - !)....
Where was I?
Oh yeah, and you know, I didn't feel ripped off at all - 3 drinks were $30, which is neither ridiculously expensive nor cheap. And the staff were all friendly and tolerated my increasingly drunken behavior with humor (read: they didn't throw me out... haha.)
On my way out, I was still drunk and happy. I'll be coming back, very soon.

Was here with Da P.J. What a great place to hang out! Fab music and strong drinks. To the bartender who overheard me saying her long island tasted like vomit: sorry! I just wasn't up to the challenge that night.
Will definitely be back the next time I visit Chicago!
Ahhh. One of my favorite places. I've only been here about 3 or 4 times, but thats probably because I don't want to get sick of it. There are however some improvements that could be made, but what place is perfect?
The hip hop music is one of the best parts, next to the hindu/chilled out lounge/borderline pothead whimsical theme they have going on of course. The drinks are pricey, but if they weren't it would take away from the classiness of the place. Speaking of classy, its not much of a secret anymore, so get there early on Friday and Saturday night or the only partying you will be doing is in the back of the line.
I love the place, so I only took one star off for each of the following reasons combined. They usually charge $20 to get in (unless you are there early enough), but they can. I usually feel like some clumsy white guy from a crappy ghetto dance movie amongst the taller more muscular African American majority, but thats my problem. Lastly, its kind of in the middle of nowhere, so you have to do some traveling if you plan to go anywhere else before or after.
One of the best parts about it is that its right across from a BlueLine stop, and its not too difficult to find a parking spot in the area, should you plan to drive...
I went here recently with a group of friends looking to do some Grade A booty-shaking and was kind of disappointed. Although compared to my previous visits (Spinderella and then Peaches), a couple of local DJs spinning 90s hip hop was a downgrade no matter how you look at it.
The drinks are decently priced, the barstaff is pretty friendly, and the soundsystem is amazing, but I'm just not in love with the crowd that showed up for my most recent visit. But then again, I got fairly drunk so I at least accomplished that mission.
Hey Buddha, do me a favor and dont let me drop it low. No one wins with that scenario. Thanks!
I've been here twice and the crowd was totally different both times.
But if you drink a bottle of wine before you go it doesn't really matter who you're surrounded by, eh?
I def burned some calories up in the betch.
Funky Buddha has a diverse crowd (lotsss of different people), acceptable music (ok hiphop/house) and decently-priced drinks ($3 bacardi O bombs).
HOWEVER. I'm only giving one star because my supposed-to-be-awesome night last Friday ended horribly all thanks to this lovely establishment.
First of all, we RSVP'ed for "reduced admission" that we discovered consisted of $15 instead of $20 cover at the door (woohoooo...what a DEAL...). And then the douche bouncer almost didn't let my guy-friend in. ...So, not a good start.
Inside, I started a tab at one of the bars and charged drinks to it throughout the night. Around 1:30 I go to close my tab and oh happy surprise, the clueless bartender had already given my DRIVERS LICENSE and credit card to someone else!! She kept holding the receipt in front of my face saying, "Are you sure that's not your signature? Have you checked your wallet?" The receipt had a random squiggly line above MY name... and my card and license were long gone. In an alcohol-fueled emotional breakdown, with stories of identity theft running through my head, I started crying. I mean, what is the point of requiring a drivers license to open a tab when they'll just give it to any rando who overhears my name at the bar?! At all the bars/clubs I've been to, and among the hundreds of tabs I've opened, NEVER has a bartender stupidly handed my ID and credit card over to a complete stranger. Yay for enabling theft!!
They ask me like 15 times whether I wanted to talk to a manager, and I reiterated YES. A manager came after the lights turned on (which means I waited at least 30 mins for this to get resolved), and at that point I was irreversibly angry. The least they could do was void my tab and I walked out swearing up and down that I'm never returning to Funky Buddha.
So okay, a little dramatic, but seriously... this bartender kept on saying, "Omg! I only had four tabs! I know I handed it back to the right person!" No, dumbass, you didn't. I was responsible enough to close my tab and keep track of my shit... but leave it to the bar itself to mess up my night. Sorry Funky Buddha, only one star for you.
I am judging the place on my NYE experience. We went around 1 AM and there was only a very small line. It was crowded but not so much that you couldn't find room to dance or get a drink. They had a coat check that was nice. I also liked that there were 2 rooms, one for dancing and one for hanging out in (3rd room was VIP but we didn't go into that one). It is a fairly large place. Cover was $15 and for NYE that's not bad. The music was a lot of hip hop, mash ups, and easy/fun to dance to. We only stayed about an hour but it was a fun way to dance off our meal from earlier. Very eclectic mix of people will made the atmosphere great for people watching, too.
I went here with my friend Wez and some classy/trashy ladies (hey, they know, they aren't ashamed) after a boring night where I had way too much on my mind. Funky Buddha was the perfect release....great look, great diverse atmosphere, but who decided drinks should cost that much? Wow! In any event it was a great time. The crowd was very lively and cool, and despite being a kinda shady part of town, this place works. i really only wanted to "shake it, shake it" and listen to Justin Timberlake, which you can do when you're the birthday boy. Cool dj's, and places to sit and chill and act like you're super important!
I don't understand when people go to a club and then complain about people dancing around or there being too many people. Ummm...what about club didn't you understand?! LOL.
This is one of the places in Chicago that I will consistently have fun at and one of the places where it always plays good music. If you like hip-hop and you like to be around a diverse crowd, then you should go.
Buddha is also interracial couple central. No joke. EVERY ethnic combination makes a strong representation here. Not only are the couples diverse, the friends that go there and the strangers that mingle are diverse as well.
I've never had a problem with service or thought that the door people were all overly important. Everyone is pretty much chill, easy to get along with, and if you are nice to them, they will be nice to you.
Came here on a Saturday for my Birthday. Got VIP for 5 friends and myself but should have jus paid $20 cover charge. Hostess was very nice but the overall experience wasn't worth the money. Wasn't impressed with the crowd and dress code was not inforced because I saw dirty gym shoes and a whole lot of ratchet-ness lol
I always have a good time when I come here - people watching, drinking, dancing and having fun! It's a pretty small space and it gets crowded, so we usually like to come by 11 p.m. The decor is awesome. The walls are a dark ruby and there are Buddha paintings along some of the walls. They have a VIP room and in the main rooms, they have booth areas where people can hang out. The drinks are club prices, but they are generous with the alcohol. The bathroom is clean and they have a nice attendant with all sorts of candy, mints, hairspray...
The only complaint is that the dance floor gets super crowded and the music can suck sometimes.
We just had my 30th bday party there. It was a blast! The trick is to come a little earlier (around 9). You get quicker bar service and more room to dance! It's got a great vibe inside. The decor makes it a cool place to chill.
We paid $35 from 9-11 and got premium drinks as well as 2 reserved tables. It was a great deal since drinks are pretty pricey! Plus, we didn't have to commit to a final head count.
Pros:
-live entertainment - when we went, they had a open mic night at around 10pm (poetry/spoken word/hip hop/comedy). right after, comedian deon cole did a 30min set that had the crowd cracking up. after that, a dj spun hip hop's finest, a set that included tribe, kweli, and dilla.
-crowd -- the crowd was very live and diverse
-atmosphere -- very chill. velvet booths.
-drinks -- they have eco friendly beer and cocktails
Cons:
-the only thing that i didn't like was that this lounge was out of the way from all the jazz clubs/restaurants we visited. being tourists, it was quite the journey trying to find the correct subway to get to the funky buddha lounge
- - - - - - - - - -
Out of Wallet Costs -- $5 cover, $15-20 for two eco friendly beers
Chance I Would Go Again -- Yes
Would I Recommend This Place -- Yes. I wish there was a place like this in LA
A Chicago icon lounge/nightlife venue for years, Funky Buddha is definitely one of my favorite spots to hit the late night evening runs. The exposure and reputation has anted up the prices for drinks, but overall Funky Buddha lounge offers an array of different crowds who mingle together for some of Chicago's best small setting dance floor with a solid mix of hip-hop, house, funk, and low-fi dance-grooves.
I've frequented this spot more often this summer helping promote for my big brother company (a lot of nightlife/music venues), and had the privilege to hang with Prince Paul and meet his lovely Korean-American girlfriend chilling in the tiny sectioned off VIP area. Name-dropping aside, Funky Buddha is definitely a chill environment with a diverse crowd for those who have rhythm (or dare to step out of their shell and leave it all on the dancefloor) and enjoy the company of out of towners and locals a like to some of the best nightly grooves on the 1's and 2's. If you haven't already checked it out, if by chance I see you there maybe if your nice I'll buy you one of those overpriced beverages party people love so much.
In addition to all the previous complaints from other Yelpers, I have a gripe about Funky Buddha.
I'd heard Outdanced on Tuesday night was awesome, with an open bar from 10-11p.m. and $2 PBR all night long. So I got guest-listed through http://Going.com, and away I went.
Later, I was told that Funky Buddha is notorious for making offers that disappear when you get to the door.
There was no open bar. There was no $2 PBR. The guest list got me $5 off a $15 cover. They explained it was because Peaches was DJing. Well, you knew that when the fliers were made, no?
Granted, it could be the promoter's fault. But still, an $8 rum'n'coke is freakin' ridiculous. This isn't Manhattan.
And the alcohol was very much in need, with the abundance of coked-up hipsters bouncing about like flailing idiots.
There was little room to move, and making a trek to the bar would have taken a hour per drink.
On the flip side, lots of people dance here, which seems to be a rarity among Chicago clubs that play half-decent dance music. And it's really close to the Grand stop on the Blue Line el.
I'll probably go back on a regular Tuesday, but if they try to charge me or don't have an open bar, screw that.
A great staple in the city!
Consistently good music with a mix of old and new.
I love that the crowd here is extremely diverse.
The main dance floor is a bit dark and makes it hard to figure out where you're going, but if you're in the mood to just lounge for a bit, just make your way into the VIP area, where chairs and couches are plentiful.
Great place for a date b/c there's live music and a tables! Nice and dim and loud enough to not have to find something to talk about the whole time, dancing is avail. but the music is amazingly global and...just amazing!
The drinks being pricey I guess I can handle (drink at home or elsewhere first, then get 1-2 drinks here, right?). What I cannot handle is the ASSHOLE bartenders. The bartender Sunday night, after taking a very long time at the opposite end of the bar, finally comes my way and gets the guy to my right first when I'm fairly certain I'd been waiting longer. So I of course make an expression that shows that I feel I'm being screwed over - however it's not like I'm dressed to the nines and don't think I'm some hotshot, nor did I curse him aloud - I just like to be treated fairly. Dude proceeds to bitch at ME and say there is a bar on the other side. "But my credit card is behind THIS bar!" I shout over the people at him. Dude then makes a big angry show of opening the four beers I'm ordering. Looks like someone just lost their tip.
Then, in closing out my tab at the end of the night, as the female bartender is shuffling through credit cards behind the bar, I yell out which one is mine. She has the nerve to roll her eyes at me and give me a shitty look. I am just trying to speed the process along and make it more efficient for everyone, but *I'm* the jerk here? Nosir. I had no trouble writing 0.00 in the tip portion of my CC receipt, and will continue to do so when I receive service like that. I'm not dressing like a whore to get drinks or better service, but I also wasn't dressed like I woke up on the beach - so do your damned job like a human being, not like you're better than everyone else.
And don't get me wrong - I understand service jobs can be and sometimes are thankless, but these people went out of their way to give me attitude. As a rule I tip at least 20%, usually more, but then again, I usually get people who aren't total douchenozzles at bars/restaurants.
It's too bad, too, because I had fun with my friends otherwise. Despite the high cover ($20 for Kid Capri? It's not 1994 anymore...), my friends and I danced until close, and the rest of the crowd seemed pretty cool.
4 stars for the cool bartender that poured me a free second serving after I stupidly spilled my first. Party foul!
This bar is a cool downtown spot where you can get your groove on with ease. No pretentious people here...just a crowd that loves to get down.
If you like Hip hop and a diverse crowd this is your place. Saturday night's are the best, last year I went there and saw Jeremy Piven (Entourage), which was pretty neat.
Overall, great place to dance and listen to good music.
For its Paris, France, cover charge, I was expecting a bit more from the Funky Buddha. I finally experienced this Chicago nightlife staple, and I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. The line was a bit long, but the doorman was cute so I let that one go. But after dropping a 20 spot on the cover alone, and walking into a smallish crowded nightclub, my opinion began to waver.
The drinks are overpriced and watered down - I spent $8 on a cranberry and vodka which was 90% cranberry. I decided to try to get more bang for my buck and bought a Long Island Iced Tea (which I had sworn off forever after discovering that they are 790 calories), and that was about 80% sweet and sour mix. On top of that, the bartender was rude. I understand that it was a busy night and there's a need to keep the bar moving, but the attitude is unnecessary. (Sara P. I think I got the same bitchy bartender that you did).
The music was pretty good..but the DJ cuts through songs a bit too quickly for me. Overall, it was okay, with a good multiculti crowd.
Definitely overcrowded (but that was expected) and overpriced - I would rather be at Northern Lights in Detroit (similar vibe, hella cheaper cover, fab decor, better drinks, better waitstaff, good DJs)
