Yeah I know it seems weird this place has only 5 star reviews - but it's that great of a gym!
I am a real person. As you can see from my other reviews, I only eat a lot of fatty food. As such, I am totally un-fit for any sort of fitness regime...but I decided to go out on a limb and get their 2012 special. I am on week 3 of 5 and so far it has kicked my butt all over the place. I can barely keep up with anyone, but you know what? I like it.
The trainers are really nice, professional, and superb at what they do. If you look around the class, they handle all sorts of levels from the superbuff to the flab (like me) and everyone is sweatin. I've worked with Kate, Daniel & Roxy in class and despite their very hard muscles they are gentle souls.
Don't be afraid! It REALLY is fun.
Quick tips: You can park on La Brea @7pm on the dot, which is when the beginners classes are. Also parking across the street when the auto-shop is closed. -

This is the first time in my life where I actually look forward to getting exercise. I attend classes 2-3 times a week and wish I could get there more. I am in no way good at Muay Thai and could never be a fighter. I flop around in class like a dying fish on some days. Roxy never makes me feel bad for it. She is tough and pushes but also understands that what she teaches is intense and that not everyone is in the kind of shape to master it.
I started training with Roxy not just to get in shape but to reduce stress and help manage severe panic attacks. It has helped my stress levels tremendously- nothing like punching and kicking a bag and imagining someones face on it to reduce stress! I also have toned up my arms in a way I never thought possible.
Roxy and her team ( Natalie especially) get an A+++++ -

I love all the bad ass female instructors; they are an inspiration. A bunch of tough looking dudes came in after one of my beginners' classes, and there was something really empowering about seeing Kate teach it.
It's been a good experience learning how to resist a punch, even if it's with a pad. We are so used to sitting around all day when that's not really what we are meant to do. There's something very satisfying about punching something with resistance and about resisting someone else's punches. -

So at the outset I will say this is a very personal review for me.
I have invested a lot of time at Function 5 and am so grateful for the group of amazing people that make this gym tick.
This review tells a bit about my experiences and is from a completely novice, didn't-know-much-about-anything-relating-to-gyms-a nd-certainly-not-Muay-Thai until September of 2010.
I began working with Roxy Richardson and her team of totally awesome instructors last Fall. I had never done any type of martial art before; and frankly the idea of punching someone made me blanche a bit. But I decided to go for it and wow, am I ever grateful.
I was a complete beginner; but I just went each time trying to do my best and keep an open mind. I began by going to a couple of Muay Thai classes per week and one day of personal training. The personal training was eye-opening for me. I'd belonged to a [shite] gym before, but mostly kept to the bike & elliptical for 30-45 min of cardio & some stretching. Personal Training allowed me to learn so much about form, all kinds of amazing exercises and not to be intimidated by gym equipment. I also opted for some nutritional help and have gotten to really define what foods work for me, giving me optimal health and energy (Sadly, gelato is not one of those foods, sigh. ).
After a few months of this regime; I transitioned to attending three Muay Thai classes a week which I've stuck to and plan on sticking to, ha!
Most of the Muay Thai classes are an hour long and the content varies by instructor and is never the same twice. Usually one does about 15 minutes of cardio/stretchy warm-ups & ab work (Jumping rope, lunges, gorillas, jogging, light-weight shadow-boxing, fancy sit-ups, etc, etc.), 35-40 minutes of drills/exercises helping one practice/learn/perfect MT techniques and then 5 minutes of stretches to cool-down.
I love Muay Thai; and I love it because of Function 5 and the amazing group of individuals that create a positive, challenging and fun environment.
I have never felt stronger; inside & out. Muay Thai, for me, is the dream combination of learning, getting to sweat and seeing how I can push myself all at the same time.
Am I very good at Muay Thai? no, not really. But I enjoy it immensely and I can tell you the difference between a push-kick & an axe kick and that alone kinda makes me feel like a bad-ass.
Function 5 offers a host of classes in Muay Thai & Jiu Jitsu and are adding more classes to the schedule all the time (Recently MMA Drills and a yoga class may be on the horizon).
Additionally, they've a host of personal trainers that can help you achieve your fitness goals; whether it to be able to do one unassisted pull-up [I'm still trying] or press 200lbs.
As you see, I am smitten with my practice; and that surprises even me sometimes.
So even if you are unsure, I encourage you to give it a whirl. Contact the gym, set-up an intro appointment and commit to a few classes. It's a bit daunting at first, but we've all been beginners. And if you hit a weekday 7am class, I'll see you there! -

AMAZING!!!!! all my life I have been trying to get fit and have always been met by a wall that refuses to turn anything on my body into muscle. I have even tried personal trainers! i started taking muay thai 2 and half months ago (3 times a week) and i have never seen such a change in my body like i have recently. The trainers here push you to your limit (without fainting) and provide you with positive feedback and encouragement. This is not your LA fitness cardio kickboxing type of class, be prepared to kick people (holding padding of course hehe) as well as to be kicked but DON"T be scared! it is the best stress relief around =D and your muscles will thank you for it.
Oh yea and be prepared to sweat A LOT so dress light and keep hydrated! -

So being new to LA and feeling adventurous, I wanted to try kickboxing. The first step for me was to yelp kickboxing near my area and this place showed up. I was overwhelmed by how may reviews it had compared to the other places plus they were all rated 5 stars. After attending even one class I see why!
I love going to these classes. I have a membership so I go to Muay Thai classes 3 times a week. It's such an amazing work out that actually helps get you in shape. If you are looking to barely get by on a work out or for some zumba type thing, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. You will be punched at and kicked at but honestly, it's fun and empowering when you get to punch and kick back. Muay Thai will give you the work out of your life and it's so stress relieving especially after a hard day. It's also good to start out in the morning and get the day going. This is great for whether you want to lose some body fat, gain muscle, tone up, or just learn the art. Roxy is absolutely incredible and she knows and really cares about everyone that attends. The starts to learn your strengths and weakness and works on you to help you be the best you can be. Plus everyone else that attends is so nice and friendly. When a member is scheduled to fight, we all go together to support which is really fun because the Function 5 team then starts to act as a family.
I really love this gym and will continue going for as long as I can. The whole team is great and to try it for the first time is free. I definitely recommend it! -

Oh hey y'all. The other reviewers aren't lying when they say that the Function 5 Fitness team and Roxy are amazzzzzing. I found the gym while searching for kickboxing in LA, but it's so much more than that. Roxy offers personal training, nutrition advice, and a super positive, fun environment that really makes you want to come back and work out. She's also a great source for all things LA - quality recommendations for everything from chiropractors to hair salons. Plus, you can't help but love her for the fact that she seems to knows how to push you w/out you really realizing that she's pushing you. She's definitely figured out how to create a positive atmosphere without turning it into a preschool/coddling type of environment. And, they just got a gym cat who is absolutely adorable. What more could you want from a place?

This place is great to get you back in shape but they also have a nutrionist to help you meet you personal goals. Also the Muy Thai clases are great to get you in shape but also teach you some self defense in this ghetto city we live in, Im just saying. Ask for Dustin or Roxy. Oh yeah they have reasonable rates and packages.

I've had a couple of Muay Thai Kick- sessions with Roxy and am certainly a big fan.
I wasn't sure what to expect at first... I have a little boxing experience but most of my exercise in recent years has been yoga and soccer. However, I quickly got into the enjoyment of kick-boxing and as a way to improve fitness levels this is great.
What I like is that you utilize all of your body in the training. Also there is the coordination aspect of movement that gets the mind involved. If your intention is to get fit and physically toned in a balanced and healthy way then I can't think of much else that tops this.
Lastly, I must mention Roxy. She is a fantastic instructor with wonderful focus and patience. Importantly, she is also able to describe techniques and movements in a simple way that you can understand quickly in your practice. -

It's been almost two months since I've started training at Roxy Fit and I think I'm hooked! I was looking for a martial arts class because i wanted to work out AND learn a skill at the same time: this is perfect.
Muay Thai is technical and physically challenging (hardest workout ever for me, hands down) but oh so fun! Roxy's classes are small, no more than 6 girls, so she can really focus on what everyone is doing. She is clearly an expert (that championship belt sitting by the ipod is so shiny!!) but she's very approachable and explains movements in simple, straightforward ways. She gives you a smart workout that's also really fun--a rare thing.
Roxy also has a way of motivating me when I'm about to throw up in my gloves and pass out that works great for me: gracious, respectful, and very positive. Yesterday was the first time since i started that I missed a scheduled class: I was so upset! I really missed my 60 minutes of kicking and punching. -

Roxy is amazing.
I've been trying to come up with my own fitness regimen for years. I go to 24 Hour Fitness and Bikram Yoga and bike whenever I can wherever I can. I just can't seem to slim down the last few pounds of pudge around my stomach and turn them into the muscles that I'd like to have no matter what I do. The way that Roxy teaches Muay Thai makes it friendly to girls in an unintimidating setting. We use a variety of props to condition ourselves (weights, medicine ball, Fitness ball etc). We take turns holding pads for each other so not only do we get to punch and kick, it also prepares us to get a bit physical too if we choose to spar later down the road. This is such a fun way to get fit. At the warmup and conditioning portion of the class, I'm building my stamina and strength. Not only am I gaining muscles that I could not get before, I'm also learning a skill. Furthermore, learning a sport that is typically male dominated make me feel so strong and bada$$. I am now beginning to be able to do proper pushups (on my toes) and do situps with an AbMat (look it up) without puking. Girls, I can't emphasize how great RoxyFit is. Don't take my word for it though, come check it out yourself. To be frank I'm a little concerned writing this since Roxy only takes 6 students in each session and while I want to see Roxy grow her business, I also want to be able to get the session that I want whenever I want. :-) Okay, now that the cat is out of the bag, girls, you should all go. Roxy is also CrossFit certified and will disperse tips on how to eat and what to eat to stay fit. Seriously, best $16 you will ever spend! (10 pack classes are $160, and so it costs $16 each class to me.) -

I have never been very into sports or fitness, but the trainers at Function 5 have completely changed that. I started taking Muy Thai classes about four months ago as a substitute activity when my hula teacher moved back to Hawai`i, funny transition right? Well, it only took a couple of weeks before I got completely hooked, and now I train about three or four times a week.
I also consulted about my eating habits with Roxy. Who gave me diet advice tailored to my unique metabolism. Since altering my eating habits as recommended I have noticed I don't get sleepy in the afternoon and my overall strength has increased greatly.
Function 5 is a great place with awesome instructors and training partners. -

Hands down the most liberating, stress releasing, body trimming, mind focusing work out you can possibly find. The entire team at Function Five help you accomplish goals (both personal & physical) you never dreamed of achieving. There's absolutely nothing like Muay Thai before a day of work or to wind down from a crazy day. The classes are full of supportive teammates, who not only challenging you but cheer you on at the same time. I have been with Roxy for nearly 2 years and I never plan on leaving.

Roxy changed my life. I have been seeing her for about 3-4 months now, and my body, lifestyle, mental and physical health have done a complete 180. I have never been in better shape in my life. She's not only my personal trainer, but nutritionist and Muay Thai guru-- and I have never loved working out the way that I do now. I take Muay Thai classes about 5 times a week, with a strength conditioning training session thrown in there and I'd take more classes if I could-- it is so rewarding!!! Literally, I am a new person, and I have her specifically to thank :)
As a woman, Roxy is such a role model and inspiration. She's a beautiful, strong, healthy, holistic, ass-kicking woman and that's motivation in itself, let alone the wonderful person she is and her full-spectrum approach to health and fitness. I have never been so accurately educated on health and nutrition in my life, and I have never looked and felt better as a result. I was just telling a friend, and anyone that has an opinion on what I'm doing or what they are or aren't doing... It's not enough to go to the gym at all. I don't actually enjoy that-- BUT-- when you are having fun and/or seeing results, you don't want to stop. I enjoy waking up at 6am, getting my day started with some Muay Thai, and if there's enough time in my day, yes, I want to hike or play tennis. It's just that fun. And that is, above all, what I have found with Roxy. FUN :) Oh yeah, and an amazing new body!!!
Your body and mind will thank you, if you chose to join her gym and/or any of her programs. And not to be pushy, but if you're thinking about it or in the least bit curious, like I was-- barely-- DO IT!!! Best decision I've ever made! -

I started training with Roxy in January. Incorporating Muay Thai into my fitness regimen has changed my life!! Training with Roxy, I've developed a new level of physical strength that I have never experienced before. We've become great friends in the meantime. As a fellow trainer, she is totally my hero!!! I look up to and respect her, and aspire to be as powerful as she is in my training. She will uproot a dormant element of physical possibility that you may not realize you are capable of. Roxy, thank you for my deltoids!!

I started training with Roxy back in 2007. I'm in and out of town all the time for work. The first thing I do when I get back in town is give her a call. I'm really excited that she has her own place now. I used to just train Muay Thai with her but now she has a full gym at her disposal. She definitely works me out hard! But it is always exciting, new and challenging. Roxy is great at what she does; always smiling, always giving me new challenges and always encouraging. And..she's getting me in great shape. Love her!

I have been training Roxyfit for nearly three years. As a life-long athlete, I have always been in good shape, but my muscle tone and overall shape have been taken to the next level. I have acquired amazing discipline and strength, both mental and physical. Training muay thai has been, hands down the most effective workout I have ever done. I highly recommend Roxy's unique style of personal training and classes. They are totally fun and there is no question you will see results.

I honestly can say that I wish I could train with Roxy every single day. She has been so great at motivating me and pushing me to do things that I didn't think were possible. In addition to being a trainer, she is also a nutritionist and her knowledge and awareness of the mind/body connection is a great resource. I definitely need a trainer who can be patient and kind and Roxy is both of those things, but she definitely makes you WORK!! Encouragement is key in making real life changes and Roxy is there with you every step of the way to cheer you on and make sure that you are able to reach your fitness goals. In addition to all of the hard work and support, our workouts are NEVER boring. Roxy prepares an individual workout for each client, each visit. So, you never do the same routine twice. There isn't anything else that I could ask for in a personal trainer. I heart Roxyfit!!!!!

I started training with Roxy because I was looking to train with a group of women in Thai Boxing who were serious about their training and not just looking to hook up with guys at the gym. After seeing Roxy fight and reading her training blog, I had a great deal of respect for her and her training ethic. Definitely worth the almost hour long drive it usually takes me to get to the facility on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The workouts are intense and I leave the studio feeling amazing. The other women are great to train with and have a drive and passion for their training that I really admire. A lot of pad work, some sparring when you're ready for it, and some ab/core work usually round out the daily workouts. Unfortunately, I'm sidelined right now with a shoulder injury (unrelated), but you can bet I'll be back making the hour long drive as soon as I'm able to!
