my mouth is watering just thinking about the details involved with writing this review...
don't even bother asking me how to get here. all i know is you just keep driving. and driving. and driving. eventually, you will be rewarded for all your efforts.
located on the windward side of the island, its just a ways down from Turtle Bay resort, and will be on your left. they have their own shrimp pond at their locale. the shrimp is absolutely magnuperful! i have to remind myself to slow my roll and enjoy every morsel and not just devour everything on my plate. very difficult after the long drive from waikiki. the entire menu is delicious. even the fried fish. but, dont' get that. you drove for the shrimp. garlic butter, spicy, curried, broiled, fried, breaded... i just drooled on the keyboard. writing about it does no justice.
when i come to hawaii, i rent a car, even for the day, just so i can get here.
went back and got a spicy butter garlic shrimp plate. So good! Spiciness was good and hot. Smartened up this time and brought drinks with us. wife got the regular butter garlic. was sooooo good!

Wow! I never stop at these shrimp stops because it always seems so touristy. What have I been… Read more »
So on our way out to the Polynesian Cultural Center's Haunted Lagoon ride, my bf and I decided to stop at a couple of shrimp trucks to eat the delicious Kahuku shrimp. Since I have never been to Fumi's and it's his absolute favorite I decided to try it out. We ordered the butter garlic shrimp. The shrimp was extremely fresh and cooked well, but I had issues with the sauce.
It was extremely buttery but overly salty and the taste was so strong you couldn't really taste the shrimp. After we finished eating there was a weird taste in my mouth so they either use MSG or something weird. I probably wouldn't go back again, but like I said its my bf's favorite shrimp truck.
Random stop to try some fresh boiled shrimp. Got the spicy garlic one, all I can say is no wonder people love sriacha sauce!
If you like shrimp this is the place for you. They have the freshest shrimp I have ever had. The shrimp is caught every morning from the shrimp ponds right behind their little shack. In fact, they supply the shrimp to a lot of the other trucks and restaurants in the area.
Each meal comes with a small slice of pineapple, a small salad, rice and shrimp. If you like fried shrimp, go for the coconut shrimp. The only thing is it comes with about 5-6 pieces, which is slightly less than the other choices. I really liked the spicy shrimp. The garlic shrimp was only ok to me.
I highly recommend ordering a side of their corn too. It comes fresh from across the street and it's the best yellow corn I have ever had. Very sweet and tender and comes off the cob so easily.
Eating the shrimp is quite messy. It would be a good idea to bring your own napkins or tissue to have just in case the napkins they give you isn't enough. There is a sink and they do provide soap for you to wash your hands after you are done.
They can get quite busy especially if a tour bus or two is stopped there. But it's definitely worth the wait!
Not bad, but not great either. First and only shrimp truck that we tried.
We ordered the butter garlic shrimp and the coconut shrimp. Both came with some rice, a small handful of lettuce, and a pineapple slice. The garlic shrimp was OK. The shrimp was cooked to perfect consistency, but the sauce was a little too buttery and runny.
The coconut shrimp was really good, but nothing to write home about. I've had plenty of coconut shrimp before and this didn't really stand out above the crowd. I had read so many good things about the shrimp trucks that I expected shrimp the size of my head, but alas, that wasn't the case. Maybe we should've tried a different flavor.
We regrettably didn't get a chance to try Giovanni's, but we stopped by Ted's and had their garlic shrimp. And Ted's shrimp shat on Fumi's: same price, more food, and a free piece of pie. So just on quantity alone, not the biggest fan.
Shrimp just isn't my thing. I get horrible memories of being 12 years old at cocktail hour and my buzzed mom forcing me to eat some shirmp *shudders*
On our little two day camping outting we stopped by here because my friend was craving shrimp. I was planning on just getting some rice and pineapple but gave in to the delicious smell and ordered a plate of garlic shrimp. It was just what I needed. Very yummy. I'm still not a HUGE fan of shrimp but I will totally come back here again if I'm ever in the area again.
It was my first and last time here. Romy's had a line of about 20 people, and being pregnant and hungry, I couldn't wait so we drove to Fumi's where there wasn't anyone in line. I should have known better and waited at Romy's. The garlic shrimp was below average and my husband got fried cod or something, we think it was those frozen fish sticks from the supermarket. Even if there is 50 people in line at Romy's, I will wait. Sorry Fumi's you got nothing on Romy's.
The shrimp trucks are Hawaii's answer to Manhattan's hot dog carts, except at Fumi's you actually DO get to see the sausage being made... and you don't mind one bit. Great stuff all the way around. I always make sure to set aside a day for a drive up the Kam for a visit to Fumi's!
so ok its literally a truck on the side of the road. this isnt the first time i eat food from a truck, but def the first for seafood.
i had the garlic shrimp and coconut shrimp platter with rice, a salad, and a pineapple slice. the lettuce was so hot i didnt even want to take a bite. but the shrimp was out of this world. the pineapple was super juicy and fresh.
very nice size, the coconut was made to perfection! but the garlic was my favorite... even though the shrimp was not peeled. it was quite annoying to have to peel my own shrimp especially when its drenched in garlic sauce. but the taste was soo good i overlooked it real quick!
they have a huge wash basin to wash your hands after you eat which was great and the soap washed that garlic smell right off.
Continuing on our shrimp truck hopping, Fumi's was our last stop. We decided to just try one type here, the spicy garlic shrimp. A little too buttery and not spicy at all, but I really liked the garlicky sauce. The shrimp is really well marinated and it came with a side of salad and slice of pineapple, something the other trucks does not offer. Although it still isn't as good as Giovanni's, I would still suggest Fumi's as a shrimp truck to try out.
Man oh man, I just drool over remembering our visit to Fumi's.
In our ten day recent visit to Oahu, we loved the shrimp so much that we made two trips from Honolulu up to the truck, just for the shrimp.
There were six of us and all of us were raving over how good and fresh the shrimp was.
On my first visit I had a garlic and butter which was super fabulous, then the second trip, I just had to torture myself with hot and spicey, which was too much for me.
If there is a next time, I will stick to the tried and true.
This place is great!.
The tour bus I was on for the Grand Circle Island Tour stopped here for lunch around noon on a weekday.
I got in the semi-long line and perused the picture menu. There were about 10 different shrimp plates at $12 each. The options included garlic shrimp, spicy garlic shrimp, lemon pepper shrimp, coconut shrimp, tempura shrimp, salt and pepper shrimp, and a few others. Each plate comes with a couple scoops of steamed white rice, a small side of salad with Italian dressing, and a pineapple slice. I didn't feel like having an entire plate of one type of shrimp so I asked if I could get a plate with two types and they said yes, and it would be $1 extra so I ordered a 1/2 garlic shrimp and 1/2 coconut shrimp combo plate.
The shrimp were very fresh since their shrimp farm is right behind their truck / shrimp shack. The garlic shrimp was nice and garlicky, not too salty, and was tender. The coconut shrimp was even better, the crunchy coconut shreds and the tender shrimp were perfect together. I think the entire plate had about 8 or 9 jumbo shrimps.
Fumi's sells soft drinks (Pepsi brand) and water bottles for only $1 each.
They also sell cheeseburgers and a couple other items for people allergic to shellfish or others who don't like it.
+ a lot of seating, picnic-table style with a canopy to keep it shady
+ there's a sink outside near the tables to wash your hands since eating gets messy
+ very clean restroom for being in the middle of nowhere
- they were out of sweet corn when I was there
I fell in love with Fumi's and Musumoto's shaved ice on my last visit to Hawaii. Fumi's spicy garlic shrimp is sooooo good. I never tasted shrimp this good before and I am not a shrimp FAN. I wish I could fly back to Hawaii for a weekend just to eat Fumi's. My mouth is drooling just thinking about their shrimp...sigh*
OK, not as good as Macky's in Haleiwa. There's no sauce left to sop up with the rice. And the portions are smaller.
After eating subpar shrimp in Kauai I wasn't too thrilled about eating shrimp from a truck 45 minutes away. I usually get sketched out at dinky stands because they tend not to clean the shrimp very well, meaning they leave the veins (which is actually shrimp feces) in the shrimp. I agreed to eat there because the gf's cousin and my cousin both recommended it. I got the spicy shrimp, the gf got coconut shrimp, and her cousin got the garlic shrimp. We all DEVOURED our food. It was amazing! I can't remember the last time I had shrimp that was cooked perfectly. It wasn't overcooked and, therefore, didn't taste like a pencil eraser. I'm am not a shrimp person, but I do find myself trying it again and again because I know somewhere out there a place knows how to do it right. Fumi's is that place.
There are two trucks - if you're coming from the west it's the second one on your left. Don't bother getting the corn, it's seriously nothing special, but they make it seems like it is. Five stars for being a rare place that knows how to cook shrimp right and tasty!
Absolutely, without a doubt THE best shrimp truck on the island. The garlic shrimp are HUGE and tasty and wow am I craving some right now! The rice (oh how I love, love, love steamed white sticky rice) sits in the buttery garlic sauce, so between the shrimp and the rice it's all just garlicky, buttery goodness.
Take it away and go eat while you watch the surfers at sunset beach.
I was a little bit hesitant about eating shrimp from the back of a truck, but shrimp trucks such as Fumi's seemed to line the road so why not try this unique experience? Well I did not regret it. I stumbled upon Fumi's Kahuku Shrimp truck with some of my family while driving around after spending some time at the beach.
I ordered the spicy garlic shrimp. The shrimp was soooo yummy, but the sauce that was on the shrimp made the rice underneath taste really salty. :( I tried the garlic butter shrimp that my sister ordered and that, too, was delicious, but I didn't try the rice from her plate to see if it was less salty than mine.
There was plenty of parking and plenty of picnic tables. They even had a sink where you could wash your hands before eating.
I really liked Fumi's Kahuku Shrimp Truck. It was a very unique experience!
I don't eat shrimp, but my friend who does couldn't put her fork down and couldn't stop talking about her food for the duration of our vacation. I was pleased with my corn, as well as the clean outdoor dining area.
I've tried many of the shrimp trucks / shacks that line the beach and town of Kahuku, but since I've found Fumi's my search has ended. When my boyfriend and I go we usually have to order three plates .. the garlic shrimp, lemon pepper shrimp and the salt and pepper shrimp, and if your like us who loves to suck on the head, specify 'head on'.
There's usually a pretty big crowd, lots of tour vans make a stop here, but unlike other shrimp trucks there are lots of seating, parking, soap & sink, and mostly the people are SO NICE!.. fumi's no ka oi!
Mmmmmm. Best coconut shrimp ever.
the shrimps are the bomb!
get the garlic kind.
I always order a pound of shrimp instead of the shrimp plate!!!
so yummmm i try to go there every chance I get!!!!!
Super fresh shrimp cooked just right, served with rice, salad and a slice of pineapple. My family and I ordered the Spicy Garlic, Salt and Pepper and Lemon Pepper dishes....the first two were absolutely amazing, but the Lemon Pepper was just average. Prices seemed a bit high to me but nevertheless, it was a very satisfying and filling meal....definitely worth stopping by if you're around the North Shore area.
pretty $$ for a truck, but awesome shrimp selection
I used to go to Giovanni's but they have super bionic psycho flies that will probably take over the world one day. The whole "toss a shrimp shell to sidetrack the flies away from your food" is NOT enough to keep those flies away. I'm telling you...they're little evil, genius flies.
I started going to fumi's and I've found that they're food is better, service is friendlier and I didn't even notice if they had flies. If I recall correctly, it's cash only. Their truck is a lot cleaner than a lot of the other shrimp trucks out there. I really need to get the recipe to their spicy garlic shrimp plate...oooh, and their sweet kahuku corn is so good!
i love this shrimp shack too. but i love shrimp:) garlic butter shrimp was my favorite.
First time to go to a shrimp truck. I thought this is some kind of edible tourist trap. But when I went to Fumi's, I was surely wrong. Went to the colorful truck and the person taking the order asked if it is your first time. I said yes, and he recommended the #2; garlic shrimp. I ordered one( for $12) and waited nearby for my number to call. 10 minutes later, the shrimps, rice, salad and pineapple wedge came on a paper plate. Found a table and actually loved peeling each shrimp; very hot and very sticky and very, very good. Ate every shrimp. You need the sink nearby to clean up and lots of paper towels for hands and face, though licking your fingers is more than adequate. Sticky goodness each and every shrimp.
This was the first shrimp truck we tried and never tried anyone else's. The food is always fresh and so good! My husband hates shrimp but will actually eat this one. There are long waits at times but certainly worth the wait. I love FUMI's!
If you ever get tired of being on pristine Waikiki or enjoying the flavors of the Ala Moana food court, hop in a car and take a 45 min. drive to the North Shore. You'll get to see a more rugged and much more untouched version of Oahu. Go down the Kamehameha highway and you'll soon enter the town/city (?) of Kahuku and the many shrimp farms that line the highway. I stopped at two places and Fumi's was by far the best one. They didn't have the big headed shrimp but they did have a range of shrimp plates all in different flavors. The spicy garlic, garlic butter and ginger shrimp were ridiculously good! Each plate is about $10 so it's not cheap cheap but still fairly decent for the amount of food. I got there about 3pm so it was practically empty so I'm not sure what the place is like during peak eating hours.
Frickin' delicious garlic shrimp! I reeked for days but it was worth it. SO GOOD. If you like garlic but don't want to have on everything, ask them to leave it off your rice. They doused the rice with the stuff and it was too much (well, almost too much, I ate it no problem!) My 10 year old had the steamed shrimp which she loved, my husband got the spicy, which was REALLY spicy but good. My 8 year old ate some of each type from our plates, and later had an allergic reaction (benadryl to the rescue!) -- we think it was some of the peppers on the spicy since he has eaten shrimp before. We did not try Giovanni's because we got there too late but later found out that Fumi's is preferred by many.
i would eat here everyday if i could...
This business has two locations close to each other. The shrimp truck and an actual small building by their shrimp farm I went to the shrimp farm and enjoyed. It's not crowded like Giovani's so that was a plus. Ordered the coconut shrimp ($12) and was very impressed. I highly recommend it!
This was probably the friendliest shrimp truck ever. There are people there greeting you as you walk up to the truck and they take your orders. They even explain the menu and tell you what the favorites are. I saw Lemon Pepper shrimp on there and asked if i was good and he said it was a favorite so we went with that. I also saw the corn on the menu and decided I really wanted corn. Our order was finished at a speedy rate. The lemon pepper was so good, I think it was my favorite of all the shrimps we had that day... and the corn was too die for! It was super sweet and flavorful. The set up for the truck is nice because it's under a lot of shade and they have a sink to wash your hands as well.
Not as mind blowing as I thought it would be but interesting nonetheless. The problem was I was still a bit hungry after eating it. Ordered some garlic shrimp..6-8 shrimp, two puny scoops of rice and a weak salad. A bit messy, a bit rustic I supose but really wasn't a fan of this spot.
We tried to go to Romy's but the line was way too long. This did the trick, just fine. We had the garlic butter shrimp and the hot and spicy (which was too hot for us...we had to wipe off the sauce, which tasted like tabasco dumped on the shrimp). Get the local sweet corn on the cob and a passion fruit soda. mmm, greasy goodness. Fast service, too.
When we went fishing, the deck hand told us if there was 1 place to eat on this island.. we had to drive up to the North Shore and visit a shrimp farm. Boy was he right! I got the #8 - Spicy garlic shrimp. The shrimp were so big! Bigger than jumbo size. The only thing was, you have to peel off the shell.. but I am ok with getting my hands dirty. They have a faucet to rinse your hands afterwards. We also tried the #1 - butter garlic shrimp. This was good as well.. but a little too buttery for my taste. The two dishes were enough to feed 4 of us. What a great deal!
After sucking in salt water in North Shore make sure you keep driving east on Hwy 83 to Fumi's Kahuku Shrimp Truck. While looking for Giovanni's, we ran into Fumi's first and was glad that we stopped. I had the spicy garlic shrimp... Ten big juicy prawns, two scoops of rice, and a small salad... finger licking good! Definitely recommend it.
If you find yourself in Oahu, and you also love seafood, then you MUST come to the North Shore and eat at one of the various shrimp shacks along the road. This completes the whole Hawai'i experience. There is nothing fancy about them, but the food is pure heaven. When I went to visit my brother, who lived out there, the North Shore was always the first place I visited. They have several shrimp dishes that you can choose from --- shrimp prepared every possible way. The best one is the spicy shrimp dish. They serve it Hawaiian style with a side of macaroni salad and pineapple. You must be prepared to get your hands a little dirty, because the shrimp are in the shell and you have to peel them, but it is all so worth it. It is local Hawaiian eating at its best. Nothing better than eating alongside the beach! They shacks, or huts, are all super clean and everyone is friendly too.. Plus, they're so affordable! If you've ever been to Hawai'i you know that things can get really expensive.... These shacks are reasons alone to hop on a plane. SO GOOD!!!!!!!! If I could give these places more than 5 stars I would!
After a few hours on the beach in the North Shore, there is no place better than to hit one of the famous shrimp trucks in Kahuku. Fumi's is impossible to miss with it's bright painting of a sunset on the side of the truck. It was parked right next to one of the shrimp farms. I shared the spicy garlic shrimp with my boyfriend as we weren't too hungry after a day in the sun and our friends got the regular butter garlic. Both were delicious, only made less so by the fact that you had to peel the shrimp covered in sauce. I'm one of those people who HATES getting their hands dirty while eating. Yes, I'm one of those people who eat their pizza with a knife and fork. But I digress...you could taste the freshness of the fish and the sauce with the rice and the delicious sesame seed salad dressing were bonuses. There are other trucks that are more famous along the road, but I definitely enjoyed a tasty snack at Fumi's!
