Here's another review for Division Street restaurant row. Fuleen is definitely one of my two favorites on Division Street, located north of the Manhattan Bridge.  It's a Cantonese restaurant mostly known for serving family-style meals.  I highly recommend this place mainly for the good portions at a reasonable value.  Of the two restaurants I recommend on Division Street, Fuleen is a bit more expensive than Jing Star.

The food is full-on Cantonese, with quick, friendly, and English-speaking waiters.  Portion sizes are excellent as well as their seafood, which is taken from the tanks in front of the restaurant.  My favorites are the carp with ginger and scallion or any fish from the tank prepared any way you like it.  As for the pork dishes, veggies, they tend to make food tasty without being greasy.  I have yet to find fault with any of their dishes.  If you find a better Cantonese restaurant, I think you are Fuleen me. :-)

$5 lunch specials here are the best! Everyday until 2:30PM.... These lunch specials  are not your typical rice plates. Here, you pay $5 and you get soup, a bowl of rice, and a serving that is probably enough for 2 people With a menu of about 40 lunch special offerings though, you'll probably wind up getting more than 1 dish.

My favorites:
Peking Pork Chop - This is served everywhere, but here they fry the pork chop to a perfect crisp. Also the Salt and Pepper pork chop is a good variation.
Sesame Chicken - Not what you think. Shredded chicken breast over Jellyfish and sesame dressing.
Fried Tofu with Shrimp Stuffing
Friend Eggs with Shrimp - I don't know why this is SO DELICIOUS. It's just eggs with shrimp. But very addictive.

It's not as much fun to come here at night, as their prices are not as cheap and although the food is good, when your dish is not $5, it becomes like any other restaurant in Chinatown.

one of our nights in new york we knew we wanted seafood for dinner. i wanted to go to chinatown and some point in the trip. so we decided on CHINESE SEAFOOD! yes!!

first things first, chinatown is so confusing to navigate. i'm kind of slow when it comes to following a map and my sense of direction is non-existent. all the streets seem to be criss crossing each other at the strangest angles and there seemed to be many three to five point intersections, but i could be totally making that up. anyway, we finally found the restaurant and were famished after having walked .8 miles [supposedly, i swear it felt like we walked 2.8!] from the financial district. .8 is what the yelp application told us so i guess that's what i must believe.

sure, the restaurant isn't in the greatest location. the area is pretty grimey, but it didn't feel dangerous to walk around during the night time hours and did not deter us in the least in our search for good food. upon arrival we are greeted by tons of fish and other sea life up in the front of the restaurant in holding tanks where they float unknowingly until they are removed from the water, presented for your approval, and slaughtered for your future dining pleasure.

we decided we definitely needed to get some lobster. i wanted chicken feets and cold jelly fish but was faced with resistance by my dinner mates D: we ended up with ginger and scallion lobster, some salt and pepper pork, grilled asparagus in garlic and awesomeness [my choice that also received some flack at first, but i put my foot down and got my green item.] and some pretty uninspired pork fried rice, which wasn't bad, but i would have preferred plain ol' steamed rice. the pork dish was very tasty, but a little too breaded for my taste. the pork inside was very moist! the asparagus and lobster were the two absolute winners. so packed with so much good flavor! lobster is a bitch to eat with chopsticks, so i got in there with my fingers quite a bit...no worries! warm, wet, wash cloths are provided :)

this was my favorite meal of the whole entire trip and it was made even better with the two dollar beers that accompanied. don't mind the stale fortune cookies at the end!! :D

The overall experience was very poor.  While the food was pretty good, but we would not go back for the extremely deceptive services.  When we questioned whether a particular entree has shrimp, because one of our guests was allegic to it.  The manager assured us there was no shrimp ingredients.  Wa la.  The major ingredient was shrimp.  The manager offered us free soup when we complained about the shrimp content, but he padded the other items to make it up.  We had a big fight over his padded bill.

Once again, the food was pretty good.  But I would not go back for its deceptive practices.

DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT! We had read about in in a NY guide book and were excited to try it but were very disappointed. The food was completely tasteless and the noodles weren't even cooked(they were hard, seriously crunching in our mouths). And how difficult is it to cook noodles? The service was non-existent, the bathrooms were filthy, I have nothing good to say whatsoever. Just a warning.

-1 for the location
-1 for the food, not that greatest

I had a high hope for this place.

I did not like the location and the food I ordered was really nothing special.

I only went there once so I might change my mind later on.

I agree with Cindy!

This place is best for seafood, not for American Chinese food.
The chef does really good flavor seafood, Usually people order from here is either the Lobster or the King crab, not chicken and broccoli.

Aside from the ambience look (which is not really fancy), but usually people are here for the food, not the look.  This restaurant gets really loud by groups of chinese (mostly fuchounese) people, but this is how we enjoy the real chinese food.  Another view of how we enjoy eating food by not judging what's around the restaurant.

There are other dishes that are really good, but it depends in how do you want to eat them.  Usually it's a messy dinner (using with your hands most of the time) and sucking your thumbs at the end of the night.

At the end, after ordering 2 appetizers, 5  big dishes and one order of soup for 8 people, the check comes out under $25.00 per person.  Really worth to go with big groups to get to try out different entrees.

If you are looking for more nice ambience and good food, you can try out Ping's seafood in Mott street, but price is a bit higher.  Both locations are good to recommend!

Enjoy it!

I took a group of middle school kids here with a colleague who ran the after school club.  The kids were expecting to order wings and boneless spare rib tips.  They were upset when they saw none of that.  *The sulking begins* "Why don't they have that?  Why didn't we just eat at the Chinese buffet in the BX?"  We tried to explain, "But that's not really Chinese food."

As a child, I was rarely allowed to get sodas with meals, to the point that when we got to be teenagers, we normally don't order it.  When my kids requested soda, I knew it wasn't appropriate for me to deny them the way my parents denied me.   So, I encouraged them to have tea also.  They asked, "Where's the sugar for the tea?"  I explained - we don't really drink tea like that.  *More sulking*

They were also planning on ordering their own individual dishes.  To their surprise, I told them, "It's family style."  *Sulking to the extreme* My colleague being more democratic/kind-hearted, suggested that each child pick out a dish.

I decided that I am going to order for everyone.  For family style dining, the each-pick-a-dish can be problematic because coordination is needed to ensure a balance meal of meat, veggies, seafood, grains.  *Sulking turns to anger*

One child demanded - "Why do you get to order for all of us?!?!"  I respond, "The menu is different here.  Take a look, sweetie, see else you would like?"  That quieted Ms. Sassy thang down, since it consisted of frog dishes, blacken chicken herbal soup, and even turtle soup.

Being the very socialist/communist - I'm the teacher -I'm always right- you got to do as I say - Tyrant - I ORDER!

BEEF AND BROCOLLI
ME:  Kids should like it.  And isn't kids' favorite vegetable - broccoli?  I know it was one of mine as a child.
KID:  Ate up all the beef.  It's so yummy!  No! I don't want broccoli!  No I don't eat broccoli.  NO BROCCOLI!  NO WANT!  "Hey!  I didn't get any beef!  They took it all!"

FRIED CRISPY SKIN CHICKEN:
ME:  They garnished with Pringles instead of with fresh fried shrimp chips - Bad sign!
KID:  Pringles!!!!  *Gotta grab them all*  There's bones in the chicken.  Ewww.  There's red-ish color in the bone - it's raw!!!!    "Hey!  Not fair!  I didn't get any Pringles!"

BBQ RIBS - Jing Du Gwat
Me:  The polished this dish off.  A popular ABC kiddie dish - which I was never crazy about.  I wanted to eat what the adults were eating.  Why you order different things for the kiddie table?
KID:  I like BBQ!  Yummy!  Let me put the sauce on my rice.  Oh - do they have yellow rice?  You got hot sauce?

SPINACH STIR FRY IN GARLIC
ME:  This dish was well done as it should since it's a simple dish.  Spinach is a familiar veggie.  Kids should eat it.
KID:  I think not!  *head shake back and forth*  Ewwww.... It's green!
ME:  Ok.  I over estimated.

WALNUT SHRIMP IN MAYO SAUCE
ME:  Just take one bite.  If you don't like it then you don't have to eat it.  C'mon.  My rule is you got to try everything, but you just eat more of the things you like, and less of the things you don't.
KID:  Most of the kids like this dish.  One child did not eat shrimp, which he kindly indulged me by taking a bite after my coaxing.

CHICKEN FRIED RICE WITH SALTED FISH:
ME:  Fried rice - that's familiar to the kids and it's authentic - and pushes them to expand their palette just a little.  The anchovies are a bit risky, but ...shhhhh....don't tell.  This was the worst salted fish fried rice I've had thus far.  The anchovies - at a better quality restaurant would be soaked until it falls into little shreds and well incorporated into the rice.  Unfortunately at Fuleen's they have chunks of hard tried salted anchovies in the rice.  I was surprise it wasn't piping hot either seeing that the kitchen just made it.
KID:  There's something green in here.  Is that onions?!?!?  Oh -I don't eat onions :(  (And I thought scallion was the least of my worries on this dish - figures)

Looking at the reviews, it seems like this might be a place for live fresh seafood or for their herbal soup which is not a regular item on most menus.  I did not order any of that since it would not fit the palate of my dining companions to have turtle soup, and they would have been scared by the flopping fish that would have been brought out to the table for my nod that signals - 'go ahead - fire up the wok!'  Perhaps, common/popular Cantonese dishes were not their strength.

It has awards lining the wall, and certainly has earned a reputation in order for my colleague to recommend it.  The server was accommodating -giving my kids fortune cookies/chopsticks to take home.  For a NYC Canto restaurant it was below average.  Yes - different scales in different part of the country.  I would have definitely given it 5 stars were it located in MT.

KID:  Can we get MC'Ds after?

1 year later
KID: OMG!  Remember we when went to C-town!  So fun!  Food was the best!

Great spot for their lunch specials, one of the better deals in Chinatown, or the city for that matter. Usually order Chicken w mixed vegetables in black bean sauce and it always delivers. The veges are very green; chinese broccoli, snowpeas, and all the other goodness-  very fresh, hot, and delilcious.

I love eating dinner at lunch.

Really good Chinese food. Probably one of the most authentic you can find in NYC.  My family comes here every few months since I was about four so a couple of the waiters know us by name.

From past experiences-- I love their peking style pork chop (ging do pai gwut) and their deep fried tofu. Their braised seabass is also pretty good, as is their snails in black bean sauce (I've been eating them since I was little, and before I knew that they were--ahem--snails). Their  chicken (with a side of prawn crackers) is also excellent.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants good Chinese seafood but doesn't want to go all the way to Flushing.

whoah! what is up with the 2 star reviews?

Some of the reviewers were unfair. One of them took a class of Bronx kids which is such a big waste! Quite obvious she should have taken them to WoHop.  Judging by the way she ordered, she seems to be a selfish person, ordering the stuff she wants to eat.

Look, Fuleen is excellent for traditional cantonese seafood. If you want the gringo experience, dont come here then.

Absolutely the best Chinese fresh seafood restaurant there is in Chinatown, especially when comparing size to the portion they provide. It is definitely family style and not for your Americanized dishes. Go with a small to medium size group, order anything that is seafood related from the shrimp to the fish to the oysters. They also provide a complimentary soup that is delicious as well as fresh. Service is impeccable because everyone is extremely friendly and aware of your needs. They recently changed management and rented out the floor above so they have more space, but chefs and waiters/waitresses are all the same.

DEFINITELY worth a try and return try and return ...

Like many places in the area, ambience is not a strong point here.  However, very good seafood for incredibly reasonable prices will have you coming back.

Great Chinese seafood, really good menu. I dined alone last year and I really enjoyed my crab with ginger and scallions, chicken/salted fish fried rice, and sauteed pea sprouts. The wait staff seemed to think it was funny that I would order so much food just for myself, but I took at least 1/2 of it home for leftovers. But I went there intending to try a variety of things I haven't eaten in a while, being far away from home!

The food at Fuleen is decent, probably in the upper echelon of Chinatown but cleanliness is definitely not it's strong point.  The only time I dine here is when other family members decide to hold a banquet/dinner gathering here.  Each time I go, I find something that grosses me out like dried stuck on vegetable on a chopstick, lipstick on a cup, black stuff in ice, etc... Not very fond of the depressing look either.  If this place can clean up a little, ok a lot, it'll definitely become a local favorite.
