Fresh udon & spicy tuna don with brown rice.  They have the freshest udon I've tasted in OC and I really like their brown rice.

Can get really crowded .. go early or late.  You'll see a line right after they open for lunch.  Or call in an order and pick it up in 15 minutes or so.

It is really understandable why Fukada is so popular.  Popular enough to justify arriving sufficiently early in advance of opening so that you are sure to snag a first round of seating spot.  Within minutes of opening its doors for the day, each seat is filled, leaving you to wait for the second round of seating.

I wanted some of their famous soba noodles and opted for a lunch special combining the Sansai cold soba with the spicy tuna don.  While I waited for my food to arrive, I was poured complimentary hot tea.  I sipped the hot and frequently refilled green matcha and watched the chefs hard at work.

My Sansai cold soba was tasty and loaded with mountain vegetables, including ferns and other familiar but unnamed items.  The dipping sauce was not as balanced and flavorful as Otafuku's and the noodles were not as pliable and toothsome but it was more acceptable in my eyes because they distracted me with vegetables.

The best part of the lunch was the spicy tuna don.  The brown rice was seasoned like sushi rice, with a little sweetness and a vinegar edge from the rice wine vinegar.  The spicy tuna was not mixed with too much mayo and topped with generous shreds of toasted nori.  The hot rice absorbed the vinegar mixture and when contrasted against the cool, smooth tuna mixture, it was like eating a really great bowl of sushi.  Delicious.

    MMMM

pretty damn good and quick service ! and when i say quick, i mean order your food and get it under 7 minutes lol. so it's either all premade and just needs to be heated up or microwaved or someone is back their w/ a whip. regardless, it's good  : ) at least what I had (veggie curry and agedashi tofu)

good portions and decently priced ! vegetarian friendly : )

Went here for dinner on a Tuesday night with a friend. Last time we tried going here, it was way too poplin to wait, and that was during peak dinner of the eek hours, friday night 8pm. Lucky for us, it was just a mere 10 minute wait till were were seated. The waitresses were very polite and served us pretty quickly, even with a good amount of people inside.

While all the food looked amazing on the menu, we went for the dinner combo, which comes with noodle soup plus don for $11.95! Good deal, especially when you're really hungry. I got the udon with the curry don, and my friend also got the udon, but with the don that has egg and shrimp tempura.

All really good. Not too salty, which sometimes happens with places I've been before for udon, and they give you so much food! The udon was well cooked and the curry was awesome! I'm a huge curry person, so I can get a bit picky, but this was some good stuff.

Definitely recommend the combination if you want to try some of their specialties, or if you're really hungry. There's a reason why it gets super packed here, so time it out wisely. can;t wait to go here again!

I was there on a Sunday night around 7/8pm, no wait. The service was excellent. Food came very fast. I love the appetizer a lot more than the entrees (hence the 4 stars). If I were to go there again, I'd order all appetizers.

    Gotta try Nasumisu.

The atmosphere was awesome, open space and a slight industrial feel... :)

Okay, this place convinced me that I'm not a big udon fan.  But that's not to say that the udon here isn't good.  My dining buddy certainly liked it.  I'm just never satisfied by soy sauce based soups.  I prefer my soup to be meaty and hearty like ramen.  To me, udon is like the nerdy, less popular cousin to ramen.

I did however thoroughly enjoy my unagi don (barbecued fresh water eel over rice).  It's a simple dish, but I could eat unagi everyday!  Pass on the oyako don (chicken and egg cooked in special sauce over rice).  It's basically just chopped up chicken mixed with scrambled egg.  I understand Japanese food is supposed to be simple, but for me it needs something else.

Prices are good though and you don't leave this place feeling like a fat-ass.  I can see why this place is a popular lunch and dinner spot.  Service was spotty however.  We got lots of attention while looking over the menu, but our waiter pretty much disappeared once we got our food.  But in their defense, it was really crowded.

Me and J Met up with Laura here on her lunch break. I didn't get the udon this time.

Seafood Salad Combo with Curry Over Brown Rice Lunch Special

A nice soy vinaigrette over bitter greens and seared albacore and seared salmon. The salad itself was pretty standard... nothing amazing, other than the greens being not so bitter, and the vinaigrette being crisp and refreshing. However, there was a pretty good amount of seared albacore and seared salmon. The albacore was perfectly seared, which gave it an almost red meat taste, especially considering it was lightly salted and peppered. The salmon was a bit on the uneven side in cooking (more pieces were over cooked).

Curry over brown rice - the curry was standard Japanese vegetable curry... sweet and not spicy, with a pretty good helping of carrots and potatoes over a cup of brown rice. Its not my favorite curry in the world (I love Muraccis, Cafe Hiro, and Sagamis curries), but its still delicious.

For under 10 bucks... this combo is great. You can pretty much make 2 meals out if it, unless you are really hungry... like I always am. Pretty much, one of the better deals for cheap yet authentic Japanese food. Also, the fact that they don't charge extra for brown rice makes this place a great healthy option, and the prices are all super reasonable.

We got there at 2:04 pm and the restaurant was closed at 2:00 pm =(
I conviced the waitress to seat me after telling her I drove for almost an hour to get there.

Ordered sansai udon + unagi don and tanuki udon + tempura don.  Udon + don combo was $9.99.

Sansai hot udon: Sansai udon used to be my favorite before I switched to ramen.  I used to go to the old Yaohan Plaza at Little Tokyo for this special udon.  Sansai udon from Fukada was a disappointment.  It wasn't as good as not what I was used to and the broth was a tad sweet.
Unagi don: The unagi was okay but it needed more sauce.  The unagi was kinda fatty.

Tanuki hot udon: This udon has tempura flakes and the broth was on the salty side.  It was definitely better than sansai udon.
Tempura don: The tempura was crispy and delicious.

    3.25 stars!!

    Fukada's tempura is yummylicious!!

Fukada gets a 5 because it's Japanese comfort food at it's best. It is simple, authentic and delicious. Do not be fooled by the commercial strip mall where this restaurant resides. The ambiance is very casual, but not completely hole in the wall-ish - love the high ceilings and wooden tables and benches. The Seafood Salad Combo with the tentojidon (shrimp tempura with egg) is heaven in a bowl and a plate. The salad comes with slices of seared sashimi with a light and refreshing ginger dressing. And the tentojidon has a wonderful and authentic flavor that only my grandma could make. My bf and I also ordered the fried squid that was tasty, but I'd probably pass on it next time and try their chawanmushi or kinpira gobo. Oh, and I liked the hojicha they served as well. Lovely midpoint rendezvouz between Pomona and Carlsbad!

Note: We were there at 6:30pm on a Tuesday night and it was slow - usually it's packed out, so get there early and expect a long wait!

I am not one to say "I WANT RAMEN!" .. unfortunately, my boyfriend is. Hes been talking about Fukada for awhile now so I finally gave it a try.

I was surprised at how much i liked the interior and how crowded it was on a Friday night. We waited like 45 minutes! :(

but i left super happy and ill definitely be back. They have this combo thing for like $15? (correct me if im wrong)

I got the Udon with tanuki topping (tempura toppings) and spicy tuna don with white rice. SO GOOD and a lot of food!!

the only thing i dont like is the wait and the non refillable cokes. but ill be back.

Came here to meet my friends and fellow yelpers Ken M. and Marilyn S. for lunch one day after a grueling civil service exam.

Very modern in aesthetic with a communal dining table similar to Pain Quotidian that runs down the center.

We had a crunchy roll for an appetizer to start, the roll was very good.  Then I had Udon with tempura.  This is not your typical Udon with Tempura veggies and shrimp but had more tempura crumbles.  The broth was flavorful and the noodles were good, not sure if they are homemade.  I also had some brown rice with their spicy tuna mixture, that was damn good.  I could have eaten a whole bowl of just that!  The spicy tuna mixture is spicy tuna and mayo and it is served with either brown or white rice.  I had the brown rice.

All in all a good lunch and a great value.  Place gets really packed though so be prepared to wait.

Found this place through Yelp a while back and now every time I crave Japanese food I go here. I always go during lunch and get their lunch special which gives you a choice of soba or udon (hot or cold) and a donburi of your choice all for $10.95. I always get the hot tanuki udon which is udon with tempura and katsu donburi which is pork cutlet with egg.  Additionally, I order a spicy tuna roll which consist of raw finely chopped tuna with a little bit of spicy mayo sounds plain but I really enjoy it like this without all the other extra ingredients. The proportions are good and it definitely fills you up. They also have daily specials too.

I always gets the spicy tuna don with brown rice + seafood salad combination. The portions are generous and the food is always fresh and quality. The dressing on the salad is light and yummy. I really like this place. However, it gets really crowded during lunch time and dinner time so come at odd hours to avoid the wait. There are people lining up outside at 11:30 to get in, it's ridiculous...

Its fresh, clean healthy food, tastes like no other japanese restaurant here in OC. My fav. is their soba nodle with sansai vegetable, and a side of tuna don, and you can ask them not to mix mayo and tuna, so you can control the amount of mayo. The best healthiest thing you can get for under9$ during lunch! They are very polite and pretty good with service. the place is always packed, so you may have to wait few mins anytime you go there. oh, I like the iced green tea too.

Udon and Soba noodles made fresh daily? A concept all Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles should adopt.

Got to try this place because Scott L. recommended it. (He also eats here once or twice a week). The server said the Sansai Udon (Japanese mountain vegetables) was the most popular so I had to get it. It was definitely a no frills, solid Udon -- broth was mild (I had to add a good amount of hot spices to get it to my liking), noodles were amazing, and if I could change anything -- they could've used more vegetables. Next time, I must try the cold Soba w/ hot dipping duck broth.

The combos seem like a good deal but I just wasn't feeling the options. I prefer to order different things I actually want to try. The Soft Shell Crab and Tempura Ice Cream are definite must-try's. You can pass on the Tempura Lotus Root and Sweet Potato. They were both measly slices and just not worth it.

Clean food, clean in  a sense that it's simple  healthy food...sometimes so clean it's a little bland

I came here for the dinner special with my bf. Comes with a big bowl  of either udon or soba noodles. Your pretty  much getting the noodles with a little sprinkle of some vegetables.

Oyakodon ( egg with chicken over a bed of rice )
    - get the brown rice , I like how soft and bead like the rice is- goes well with the mushy egg texture.

    ---------------------------------
I usually like food with a lot of flavor and MEAT ...it really lacks on the meat . But if I felt like I over toxic my body with the "american diet " I stop by for some fukada once in a while.

    Tip
    - for dinner come around 4:45  p.m. ; 15 min before opening . Otherwise look forward to a 30-40 min wait after . This is because the first round of people  are  getting their food at the same time and dinner is usually a long process.I noticed people who came 20 min after me just sitting  there waiting for a while.

    Overall
    - around $11 for one dinner combo - miso soup extra
    -clean facility
    - fast service
    -bland food
    - not for  meat lovers

BEST UDON ever!  I hear the udon noodles are made fresh!

The Sansai udon is fairly simple, but nonetheless delicious.  Comes with veggies only (no meat).  I got the udon and donburi combo. The spicy tuna donburi over brown rice is very good!  They make their spicy tuna mixed with mayo - wasn't too spicy but i liked the creamy consistency.

    Other noteworthy items to try:
    - Tonkatsu don (slightly soggy katsu because of the egg mixture - but still really good!)
    - Fried squid legs (loved this!  it's lightly dressed and served over a bed of mixed greens)
    - Fried oysters (big, plump pieces of oysters fried in a light, crumbly (panko?) batter)

FYI:  Come early (when they open) if you dont want to wait in line. Weekends are less busy than weekdays.

Overall, great food. I'll be back. (terminator style... lol... jk... i'm a dork... ok i'll stop)

I really enjoy dining here. I've been here twice.

I first had the Soba noodles int he soup with Curry and brown rice.
We also had an appetizer of Pork belly - which was fatty yet really scrumptious and flavorful. The soup and soba itself was so good i wanted it to be endless.

The second time we went I had the udon noodles in the soup with curry and brown rice.
We had the fried tofu with ginger and fish flakes. I'm not a fan of the consistency of fried tofu but this was a perfect marriage between the crispy and the soft melty.

The Udon itself was really good and i kept wanting more but i was so full by the end of it. Eating from a ladle is still weird but you know me. I'm finicky about my utensils.

Reminder: bring your own utensils everywhere.

I've been to Fukada a few times.  I started out with ordering their Udon Noodle Soups and have not ever ventured away.  I can't attest to their sushi and appetizers (but I suspect they are also quite good judging by the number of authentic Japanese natives in the crowds.
Oh my - the Udon noodles?  SUPERB!  Excellent!  So fresh!  And as my grandmother describes, perfectly "QQ" - like a chewy goodness.  Even at the best Japanese places around, all the Udon noodles seem similar to the kinds you can just buy in a package and make at home.  Not at Fukada.  Their Udon is made and flown in from Japan regularly (we were told).  The thickness is less than your average packaged udon.  Incredible really.

I know one day I'll have to venture out and try their hand-made (in-house) soba noodles.  I will, really I will.  Hand-made noodles are so rare now, I practically thought they'd gone the way of the Mammoth and the Dodo birds (as in, extinct).

The combinations with the small rice bowls are a perfect way to satisfy the "noodle or rice bowl" cravings.  I like to finish the noodle and have a bit of leftover rice bowl to go!

The only reason I docked one star is because I wish they had more variety in the noodles and noodles with MORE stuff in it.  For instance a beef udon with all the vegetables and tofu, etc.  Each one is a little sparse, but that's about it.

Come here early and be prepared to wait. We came 15mins before the shop opened and there was already a line waiting outside. Luckily we got early enough to be seated first round.

Last time I came, we ate:
-Squid legs: I'm not a big fan of squids so I can't give an unbiased opinion on this dish but my friend loved it
    -Salmon belly
-Spicy tuna brown rice: who wouldve thought brown rice would be good but this one is!  Rice was soft, not dry at all
-Shrimp and veggie tempura udon: really light and brooth isn't too overpowering

We ordered all of that to share between 5 people and it was more than enough.

This place serves authentic Japanese food.  Not the americanized version, but the hard-core, back-to-the-motherland type dishes.  The menu has each dish described in Japanese writing next to it, in addition to the english description.  In short, the food is authentic and great tasting.  Not what you will usually get at a so-called "good" Japanese restaurant, because this place doesn't cater to born-in-america americans, it caters to anybody who loves "real" japanese food.  And no, I am not Japanese.  And yes, if you like Japanese food on any level whatsoever, you will love this place.

It can get crowded on any day of the week for dinner so try and arrive early, like before 6:30pm if possible.  But its worth the wait.  I like their fish dishes (sea bass, cod) the best, but their hot Udon, sushi, Kaki Fried (fried oysters), and brown rice are all very good too. Love their hot green tea, seems like they use the good stuff, not the cheap stuff for this.  Go and try it, and don't be afraid to experiment, because you can't order something "bad" here, unless you're alergic to it.

My friend and I went for dinner on a Tuesday night. Wait was about 5 minutes for the two of us, and we sat at the long dinner table they have in the middle of the small restaurant with about 4 other parties. It was sort of hard to talk and eat like this, since there is someone else sitting right across from you (and you can hear what they're saying).

We ordered the salmon cheek appetizer, udon, tempura plate, and a couple rolls. The salmon was delicious! Very flavorful, moist, and tender. My friend said the udon was good. I thought the rolls were not that special.

Overall, I liked it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. It wasn't that special, the ambiance was more like a lunch place, and the servers didn't come around too often.

I think I was expecting much more. I went with my boyfriend and his friends for a late dinner. I got there late so everyone was already eating. I ordered my food and got it pretty fast. However, I spoke Japanese to the server girl and APPARENTLY she didn't understand what I wanted because I got something COMPLETELY different.

I ordered TANUKI SOBA HOT with HAKUMAI SPICY TUNA DON. Instead, I got the sansai soba hot with brown rice spicy tuna bowl. SERIOUSLY? I spoke clearly for you and you still didn't understand.

Location: The place is fairly small and only seats a couple of tables with one large table in the middle. The parking is ample with lots of other stores in the same plaza.

The food: Even though I didn't get what I ordered, I ate it anyway. It was MEH. I have had better. The soba noodles were a mix of HARD & SOFT noodles.. disgusting. I can eat better INSTANT soba than that. The sansai vegetables were pretty good though and the broth was okay too. I was unable to eat the spicy tuna bowl because I was too full, but had some when I came home. My verdict for it? It was just OK too. I can make it at home.

Final verdict: I don't think I will go here again because I can make what they serve at home if I get the right ingredients. UNLESS I get super lazy and I just want immediate food. I think I will try FUKADA2GO though because it's closer to school.

I really dont get why everyone raves about it.  Its a very clean feel with very fresh fish and food.  Got a cold soba that came out...refreshing but it didnt have any notes that jumped out.  Its not a greasy, gross, unhealthy place.  Its the opposite.  Its like the super clean and fresh and organicishy healthy Japanese place to eat.

If you like your raw fish and you like it served plain as it is without fillers or toppings and you really want that so fresh taste that its almost alive and flopping in your mouth, than fukada is ur place.

It's in this corner plaza with a BK, (going west) across the 405 freeway from spectrum. (going east over the other freeway aka the 5 is like to Costco).

It's probably me but the first two letters in this places' name jus...iono when you say the name it sounds like it could go badly.  Sort of like in mandarin for english speakers when they learn the phonetic/pinyin for study...my chinese teacher decided to spell it to our token white guy classmate... Love it here!

SERVICE:  Service always consistent and on target.  Usually there is a wait at this one so week nights Mon-Thurs are best!  And if wait is still really long, there's always Fukada To Go at Dupont and Jamboree.

MENU / PRICES:  Appreciate them adding brown rice to the menu.  Like the different combos. One of my favs:  oyakudon and tofu salad.  There was one time my egg was a bit runny and they took it back right away and replaced it with a new one :)

LOCATION / DECOR:  Simple decor, nice Japanese touches.  It's fine enough for casual dining and we come here at least 4x a month!  Only thing is I don't care for the long wooden table in the middle of restaurnat, I always feel those are difficult and awkward to sit at when you're just a party of 2.

    Arigatou :)

If you like udon, you'll like this place!

Service: It's okay, pretty friendly depending who comes by your table

Price:  Pretty good if you decide to get udon with a rice bowl because that's the only thing I get.

    Food:
    - Udon: I looove the noodles!! It's skinnier than other places so it's much more easier to eat!  The portion is a looot
    - Rice: Get the BROWN rice!!! It reminds me of corn for some reason, and it tastes so much better.  I like the Unagi better than the shrimp/egg one.  I got two big pieces of unagi!!! YUMM.  The shrimp/egg one is sooo salt, the hell!!

I come here once in awhile!  Gets pretty busy

Stopped by with some friends for dinner before heading home to San Diego. When we arrived, the line looked long but after going inside and smelling the food, we decided to wait it out. After an hour wait, we were seated and placed our orders. I with the dinner combination of hot sansai soba and katsudon bowl with brown rice. Our food came out fast, which was great because we were all very hungry after such a long wait. The katsudon was good and so was the brown rice. So good that my girlfriend, who doesn't like brown rice, actually enjoyed it. The soba was also tasty; broth was warm and perfect for the cold night and the noodles were fresh. I also tried some of their spicy tuna don and I probably could have finished my own bowl of that as well. Also, the hot tea is free! While this is the case at some places, I know a lot of place that charge you.

I wish I tried this place out while I was working in Irvine, I would have made it one of my go-to spots! Now I will just have to settle for whenever I am in the area.

Fukada is a cute little Japanese restaurant near the Spectrum.  You should definitely stick to the udon/soba noodles, donburi.  The soup is light and fresh tasting and not too salty.  The noodles themselves are very chewy and the udon is thin and definitely a lot tastier than the soba.

The donburi bowls are tasty.  Perfectly cooked brown or white rice.  The spicy tuna-donis just the right kick of spicy and the pork cutlet is fried to crispy tasty perfection.

The sashimi salad is also refreshing with the soy/vinegar/mirin based dressing.  Big pieces of seared sashimi.

They have good combo lunch prices.

o...Fukada, how I miss you! Used to frequent this place when I was working in the area.

Their basic udon with fresh boil oysters (I wish I found out that I could add that to the noodles earlier in the days)...my favourite!!! Udon was so fresh coz they make it on site...never had their ramen to compare with the udon though....

The lunch combo set had soooo much food...very economical choice...

I wish I am in the area more often these days so that I could go back...

I would give this 3.5 stars....There is always a wait when I come here. It would take around 30 minutes for a party of 2.

The dinner combo ($10.95) has the exact amount of food as the lunch combo ($8.95) but is $2 more.

    What I usually get:
    1) SANSAI HOT UDON: mm mm good, the mountain vegetables in the soup make it so flavorful and warm in my tummy. I like that the udon is thin and chewy while the soup is at just the right temperature (not too hot); the only thing lacking is some MEAT....I feel like a rabbit just eating the mountain vegetables.

    2) TEMPURA DON: This is meh, there is too much juice that floods the rice....and the egg is a bit salty.

    3) UNAGI DON: I think they like to drench their rice with sauce.........sauce...sauce.....the eel was good but so many little bones :(

    4) SPICY TUNA DON: this is quite good, the spicy tuna is really fresh and works well with the warm rice

Overall it's a good meal but not an outstanding meal.

Gold Medal - Spicy Tuna Don with Brown rice
    Silver Medal - Sake
    Bronze Medal - Soba

This location is right next to the Irvine Spectrum.  This place gets PACKED.  You sign in when you arrive and you wait and wait and wait.  But it is worth the wait :)

The prices here are very affordable for Japanese food.

The service here is very polite as most Japanese people are.

The food here is GOOD.  But I think it also depends on what is ordered.

The Spicy Tuna Don bowl gives you alot of Tuna and is always good. They are generous with the spicy tuna they slapped on to your rice.  You have the option of white rice or brown rice for no extra charge.

The last time I ate here with my gf, who loves sake.  We pretty much tried every brand of sake they had.  They were surprisingly equally delicious, even the house sake.  Who doesn't love SAKEEEEEE.  No, the house saki here did NOT taste like rubbing alcohol.  Some of you know what I am talking about.

Only this location has the Soba.  The Fukada 2 go doesn't have soba.  They have everything else, but no Soba.  Not sure why.  Tip: If you can handle spicy get EXTRA wasabi!!

    HAPPY FUKADAING!!

Authentic, healthy Japanese udon and soba. I love the lunch combination where you can get udon or soba plus a rice bowl. My favorite combo is the hot tenuki udon with the spicy tuna don. YUM!

But beware, there is always a wait here for lunch or dinner.

I love this place!  Long wait for lunch though.  I go once-twice a week.

I normally get the lunch special.  Cold udon noodles sansai with a bowl of brown rice with bbq eel.  The crab cucumber salad appetizer is delicious and light.   All the food are super fresh.
