3.5 ~ Overall Food & Service
The Sushi is surprisingly very good!:-) I say "surprisingly", b/k the restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside.
As mentioned the food is very good(4), but the service(3) is somewhat lacking. While they are very nice, we wished they had done a better job of explaining which Sushi Rolls were which...b/k we had ordered about seven. -

I've been a customer of Fuji Sushi, both eat in and take out, for several years now. I've always thought it to be good quality, moderately priced and have a friendly waitstaff. The last couple times I've been there to pick up take out have not been up to par and last night's experience definitely finalized my decision to never return and let others know how this place has gone waaaayyyy downhill.
Last night (Saturday) I called at 5:40pm to place an order for 4 maki rolls, an avocado salad, and a tofu appetizer. I was told it would be ready in 30 minutes. My husband and I showed up to the restaurant 30 min later and after waiting a few min by the door, a hostess came over and told us to have a seat in the waiting area. She did not tell us whether or not our order was ready but she did confirm each item ordered and knew what name it was under. We thought it might be a couple minutes. And so we waited.....and waited.....finally an hour had gone by since I had placed the take out order by phone and I went up to the hostess and asked her if our order was almost ready since they had quoted 30 min over the phone yet it had already been an hour by now. She went to go check and came back to tell us it would be ANOTHER 30 minutes!!!! She appeared apologetic but did not say anything further except to ask if we still wanted to wait. I said "well we've already waited over an hour, I guess we'll wait another half hour!" I did let her know we were very disappointed. Meanwhile, the whole time we are waiting, we are listening to rap music over the restaurant speakers. An Eminem song was on when we first sat down and we commented to each other that it was a strange selection of music at a Japanese restaurant!
Note: the place was busy but not extremely and there was only one other guy waiting for a take out order when we had arrived. About 5 min before our order finally came out, that guy ended up canceling his order and leaving after he asked the hostess if his order was ready and she told him they still hadn't even started making it!
When the hostess finally rang us up I really thought she would give it to us for free or at least at a discount given the ridiculous wait time of 90 minutes. However she charged us the full $36.00 for the order and just shrugged and apologized one more time. Then the strangest thing happened. She held out her hand to mine and gestured as if she wanted to drop something in my hand. I thought it was my credit card since I had just given it to her to pay for the order. Instead, she slips 3 Starburst candies into my hand as if she is doing a drug deal and gives me another apologetic smile. IT WAS SO WEIRD!!!! My husband and I were joking afterwards in the car that maybe it is a secret cultural custom to give out Starbursts when you feel really bad about something, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I would like to also mention that the maki roll portions were pathetic, only 6 small pieces per roll. And the avocado salad was an absolute joke. It was a few pieces of iceberg lettuce with about half a sliced avocado on top. Nothing else. And it was $6.00. The tofu app was also not very tasty and again, disappointing that for $5.00 you get only 4 small square pieces.
All in all, it was truly a strange and frustrating experience and we will not be going back. -

This place will get the job done. Its not oh my god great orgasmic sushi. But it does the job. LIke others have said, staff is friendly, prices are reasonable, and we went at about 7 last night it wasn't packed (but it was a tuesday so it was more busy than I would have thought)
I would never have found it if I wasn't looking for it ( I had their local ginger where near buy groupon deal that was as of recent and needed to be used by 9/30). I may go back if I am in the area but as it is on Route 1 and kind of hard to get to from Salem (and better places I like to get sushi in Salem and other places closer by). -

Awful experience husband and I decided to go for sushi last night since we were around the area. The first time I came to this restaurant the staff was polite but it was pretty empty only one other couple besides ourselves and I thought to myself why is that? Well, we couldn't go in and have a sit down dinner because our children were sleeping in the car. So I went in to grab a menu and the first thing I told her was that I will be ordering to go because of my children sleeping in the car. Before ordering I needed to use the bathroom and I asked politely can I please use your restroom first. The waitress smiled so I thought it was okay, since she was the one who waiter ed on us the last time and seemed to be very kind. As I turned around to walk towards the bathroom.. I heard the Chef say "Excuse Me!" to get my attention. I turned towards him waiting for him to confront me and he looked down to continue cutting the vegetables. I looked at the waitress and asked her is there a problem with me using your bathroom, she continuing to smile in my face and then gave me permission with her hands to go ahead and use the restroom. I was baffled and embarrassed! I told her loud enough for him to hear me, that it was okay if you don't want me to use your restroom I can hold it. I went outside to tell my husband what just happened. He was so upset and told me to let them know we will not be ordering from here ever again. At this point my my throat was pounding to explode! I kept my cool, I went back into the restaurant, placed the menu on her booth and told them "Thank you for your courtesy I will not be ordering!" This is my second experience feeling discriminated by Asian people in their business. I will never come to this place ever again!! Now I understand why this restaurant is always empty when I drive by.

Keep driving.
Ideally, turn around, head up Route 1 North to Route 114 West to Middleton and go to Bluefin.
I give this review two stars because the server and sushi chef were extremely nice, but the food was one star abysmal. The sushi was dry and had almost had the consistency of beef jerky. The ingredients in the maki rolls also didn't seem very fresh. I really wanted to like it. Really. On the bright side, I'm not sick, and I was legitimately worried that it was a possible outcome as I ate my meal. And the green tea, isn't green tea, as one other reviewer pointed out.
I wish I checked the latest reviews on Yelp before trying it out. -

After a grueling day of wedding related activities, the bride and myself the bridesmaid needed a little sustenance. The craving was for sushi and after finding the place that was reccommended to us had been closed for 2 months we hit up Yelp for help.
Stopping into a random sushi place is scary, but my rule is that if the place has 3+ stars on Yelp it is probably ok. That may seem low, but hear me out. Everyone has a very particular style of sushi they like. It is one thing people are extra opinionated about. So here is my sushi scale:
3 stars- Food is edible, you won't get sick. Maybe overpriced, but will work in a pinch.
3.5 stars- The food is pretty good, worth checking out if you see a couple really good reviews. Especially if it is close.
4 stars or more- The food is good. No matter what you like, you will like this. If that many people can agree on one sushi place- you want to be there.
Back to my review. We popped in around 3pm so of course the restaurant was empty. Our waitress was very nice but not overbearing- the best kind of waitress. She took our order and next thing you know we had a small salad with ginger dressing and a bowl of miso soup each. On the house! Man I love that! The shumai were fluffy and great, our rolls were nice and my tamago was yummy. The only thing was the white tuna sushi was seared and that is not my fave preparation method. But not worth docking the place too much. Add to all this the great price tag (about $45 before tip for 2 rolls, 2 apps and 6 pcs sushi) and you have a nice sushi joint!Listed in: Cheap Eats!

Fuji sushi, where have you gone wrong?
If you are looking for a plethora of crazy rolls they have it, but the quality of the fish itself is mediocre at best. The rolls are decent but stay away from their sushi and sashimi.
The atmosphere is lame and the service is shot. Definitely don't show up at quarter til 8, they close at 9:30. I made this mistake once and the waitress was huffing and puffing from the moment we got there until we left, at 9:20, thank you very much. I've never in my life had such terrible service. She greeted us by saying "takeout, right" and then sighed when I said eat in please. She gave us all of 2 seconds to order and was rushing around. We were the only people there! So, for the first time in my life I gave a 10% tip. She didn't even deserve a tip at all!
I think the only reason I ever liked this place was when an old job of mine used to treat us to takeout here for lunch. It was free and I didn't get treated like I was a huge inconvenience.
Spare yourself and go to Blue Fin instead. -

You want good sushi?
Go to Bluefin.
You want good service?
Go to Bluefin.
You want Korean waitstaff and hostess that don't know what they are doing?
Go to Fuji Sushi.
The only highlight here was a Sushi Chef who gave us free sushi because he knew our friends.
I second the experience of the past yelpers who came late at night near closing.
The female waitres/hostess was dressing to go home, on the phone in obnoxious conversation near us, didn't bring us water and when she finally noticed brought us water bottles so she didn't have to pour water for us.
If we didn't know the Sushi Chef, I bet you they would have been rude to us.
I hate to give Korean owned businesses bad press, but if they are going to be a good restaurant they need to improve their service.
Things to improve-
1. Wait staff need to be more courteous and professional.
2. They need to have food in stock...they ran out of kimchee and didn't give us kimchee. That is huge mistake to Korean customers.
3. Korean food tasted like Crap.
If they don't improve these things, they will surely close in a year.
So please improve so I can update this with a better review....
I will go back in a month to see if anything is different. -

This is a classic example of FAILED yelping. You should be ashamed if you gave this place anything more than three stars.
I don't understand how this place can get even close to three stars. Three stars would be considered generous. My experience was so bad that it warrants one star. If I could I would like to put up no stars but that would be harsh. It really warrants at least one and a half stars for food and zero stars for customer service.
I mostly write about the food, however, on this occasion, the service was so bad, I needed to comment. Our waitress was young, maybe in her late twenties or early thirties. Her demeanor and service from the time she seated us to the time she took our orders had completely brought my enthusiasm from super excited to wanting to get up and leave.
But what kept me glued to my seat was the four and a half star Yelpers gave, the claim that sushi at this place was equivalent to "orgasm on a plate" and also the best sushi on the North shore.
I should have heeded my bf's advice and stayed away. The warning signs were all there, the strip mall and the awkward placement behind a gas station. But I was driven by my addiction to sushi and was ever so misguided by yelpers. This false notion was further reinforced by the "We're loved by Yelpers" sign as you enter the restaraunt, and also the reassuring newspaper article that boasted "Best Sushi on the North Shore." My brain failed to process the lines that followed, "catering to Americans." Well, I am American too am I not?
I ignored our waiter, hoping the food would compensate. She had this "I don't give a ...." vibe. I cannot tolerate people like that. It frustrates me. If this store wants to survive, she should be fired. And even if she was family, business is business. She should not be working around people when she has no people skills.
Placing our orders proved to be a challenge. She cut me off halfway while I was ordering to answer a phone call where she spent a good five minutes arguing with the customer on the line in Chinese and later the chef. My boyfriend was so annoyed with her he lost his appetite. There was little hope that the sushi could save the day.
I scanned the place, looked decent, very nicely decorated, brightly lit. No worries. Food will surely save the day right? My bf's beer came out and I had tea. Took one sip and sirens went off in my head, "CHEAP tea, gross!" Then came the plate of carrots and creamy island salad dressing. I wanted to send it back. If I was in elementary school then this would be acceptable. Why am I being served carrots at a sushi restaurant? Yet another warning sign.
We waited for our food but became more irritated by the waitress who we observed motioned to a customer that his food was ready for pick up and after placing it on the counter, she turned her back and walked away. No thank you, no have a great day, nothing.
Then came the miserable avocado salad that looked nothing like what is in the pictures. I felt robbed of my five dollars. They served us avocado, which I saw the sushi chef dropped and picked up, lettuce and carrot. The same nasty sweet salad dressing they serve us with the carrot was used on the avocado salad. Where's the red cabbage, green bell peppers, and tomatoes? Now I am beginning to feel real upset. Their pictures lied!
The nightmare continued as our sushi and four special maki rolls came plated all in one tray. A hideous chipped glass buffet tray. I expect two things when I spend this kind of money on sushi, fresh fish and presentation. This place lacked both. There was no artistry in the presentation. If I wanted sushi served all on one plate with no garnishment or decorations then I would have saved my money and bought sushi from a supermarket. We were given a measly portion of cheap pink ginger and a squeeze of wasabi and that was all. No other garnishment .
I had ordered the shogun maki, the oishi maki, the naruto maki, the fuji maki, sake nigiri, and toro nigiri. Let me emphasize, I was robbed of my hard earned money! To my great disappointment, I've had better quality fish and sushi at the Market Basket supermarket in Chelsea, MA.
And the worst item of them all, not counting the carrots, had to be the toro (fatty tuna) sushi that I ordered. I spent good money for fatty tuna, which was also what they charged me for, but instead what I got was a thin slice of cheap and tasteless tuna that was chewy and tough to down.
I am disgusted with this place. I am never returning. The waitress today should be fired. This place is a grade lower than supermarket quality sushi and is to me imitation Japanese cuisine. Even the soy sauce is not Japanese. Look up "LEE KUM KEE." It is not Japanese nor is it Korean, it's Chinese.
See my pictures. They don't lie like the pictures in the menu at this restaurant. -

After reading the hype about Fuji Sushi I was dying to go, so finally my fiancée and I stopped in for dinner. We went on a Sunday evening at about 6:30ish; the place was pretty dead, only one other couple there.
The hostess was extremely pleasant and served us our dinner all night. We saw absolutely none of the irritating or rude staff some other Yelpers have written about. In fact our waitress was kind enough to offer us a free soup & salad since only one of our meals came with it, and she overheard us saying that we would split it. She was so nice, I didn't want to tell her it was because we already had entirely too much food... She also did an excellent job staging our food so that our courses came one after another, and never stacking up new plates without clearing the previous. This was a very nice touch and allowed us to really enjoy each dish as a separate experience from the last.
I was struck by the taste of the tea which i expected to be Green Tea, and immediately thought "yuck"! The waitress later explained that is was NOT Green tea, but was in fact Barley Tea; hence why my fiancée the beer enthusiast (and hobby brewer) was so enthusiastic about it. A unique option for sure, but not for everyone, and not for me.
We ordered the Gyoza to start which was a little on the plain side, largely because it was not served with the typical Gyoza dipping sauce. It was clearly made fresh and was alright.
Next came the Naruto... beautifully presented, and absolutely perfect!! Very nice quality tuna, it melted in our mouths.
Lastly came the "Sushi Regular" entree. 6 California rolls, 2 sashimi tuna/salmon/white fish & sashimi shrimp. The platter arrangement was simple, but nicely laid out. Normally we're not ones to order a California roll in restaurant, but it came with the meal and we were pleasantly surprised! It may very well have been the best California Roll I've ever had!! The nori was surprisingly strong tasting, and the rice was seasoned with sesame seeds; it all blended exceptionally well. The sashimi was very good, all nice cuts of fish, and neatly presented.
My biggest complaints have to be the tea, and the wasabi. The Naruto was presented with surprisingly weak wasabi, which was disappointing. However our entree was served with shocking strong wasabi; a change we were not prepared for!! We both put huge gobbs on our respective rolls expecting the same lame wasabi from the last dish, and instead we got kicked in the face by pepper!
All in all, it was a good experience, the bill was very reasonable, the service was nice, if a little slow at times, and the food was excellent. We will certainly be coming back the next time I have a sushi craving. -
Review from Krys A.
So I go to Fuji at least once a week and usually have the same two employees wait on my boyfriend and I. WELL, we walk in to see our usual waiter behind the sushi counter, dressed as the chef. We tilt our heads out of curiosity and both looked at each other like, ut oh, this could be bad. We made our way to a table and as soon as we sat down we whispered to one another asking, "is he the cook? did he get a promotion?" and "What is he doing back there?" My boyfriend shouts out across the restaurant and says so are you the cook? The "waiter" replied yes, and came over to our table. He told us how he is an actual Sushi Chef but they have been down waitstaff therefore he he been helping as a waiter. And he asked us if we'd like to try his sushi? Well, of coarse we drove all the way to eat sushi and if he's the only chef, we'll try it! (A bit nervous but... willing to try it)
Turns out, he's a GREAT sushi chef!! How much better could this get? I liked his Sushi better than the regular sushi chefs. He came back to our table once we finished dinner and asked how everything was. He is just so darn sweet, he's honestly my favorite waiter/chef ever!
And who's clicking the survey saying Alcohol: None???? This place def has beer and wine. Once and awhile the boyfriend and I have a Kirin (Japanese beer) with our meal.
Cant wait to go there again this weekend!!!!Listed in: Must Try!

The sushi here is fresh and delicious. I really like that they will make maki with brown sticky rice if you don't want whit rice. I know it's less authentic, but I do enjoy it so much more with brown rice.
Even when I've ordered straight sashimi it's been tasty.
And they deliver.

Sushi me, sushi you.....
Fuji Sushi is a great find off of Route One. Yes my favorite road to drive on in the greater Boston area. Well, it was a cold and rainy out. I decided to take a peek inside to see if this place is up to snuff. I was looking forward to this place cause it seems like forever since I had sushi. Plus it had some great reviews from other Yelpers. So were the other Yelpers right about the place? Definitely right on the money on this call.
Fuji is a cozy little establishment. It is brightly lit and decorated. It was clean and the staff was friendly. I decided to order Maki rolls (Crunch and Fuji) with a Kirin Light. I am happy to report that both were just plain delicious. So if you are looking to find a great Sushi place in the North Shore. You have found your place. Cause you know Yelpers can't be wrong!Listed in: Down in North Shore...

Review from Julie R.
A good find for sushi on Rt. 1. The location is kind of hidden in a small plaza behind a gas station. I was glad I stopped in.
The lunch special choices were very reasonable. For $10.95 you can get 6 nigiri pieces, your choice of a roll (salmon, tuna or cali), miso soup and salad.
Before that stuff arrived a small plate of carrots and celery with dressing was brought out. I sat right in front of the sushi chef and watched him make my food. He prepared everything with ease.
When my plate arrived it was nicely laid out. Chef's selection included 1 tuna, 2 salmon, 2 yellow tail, and 1 shrimp. I chose the salmon roll. All the sushi was great but the yellow tail had an off taste to it. Maybe it wasn't yellow tail. I could of been wrong. The roll was loaded with salmon. Nigiri pieces were on the smaller side compared to most other places but the lunch special is still very reasonably priced for what you receive.
There was a sign right in front of me for a banana tempura dessert. It looked so good that I decided to try it. It came out in hot tempura sliced bananas with a scoop of coconut ice cream. Delicious!
The sushi chef was very humorous, yet mature. He chatted to another patron about how he used to run Ma Soba in Beacon Hill, then sold it to run a smaller place, which is Fuji. The restaurant is cozy. They have a small sushi bar to sit at, then about 10 other tables. Service was quick and pleasant. I'll be back!Listed in: Seeking Sushi?

Darnit, I thought I had reviewed this place after our visit a few months ago, but I hadn't. So my memory of the specifics of our visit is vague, but I do remember thinking it deserved close to 5 stars! The sushi was fresh and really affordable. The restaurant itself is in a nondescript strip mall, but the sushi is as good, if not better, than what you'd find in Boston.
The only reason I am deducting a star is because service was spotty. Our waters were not refilled and it took a while to get the check. However, the servers are friendly so I'd come back nonetheless. -

3.5 stars. Fuji is an extremely affordable and friendly establishment for sushi in the North Shore area. Don't get me wrong, the restaurant ambience/decor and quality/variety are not the same as you can expect at Blue Fin or Mandarin, but you are also not paying the same high prices and will certainly not leave dissapointed with the food you receive. It is a great spot for takeout or a quick lunch/dinner, and all of the staff there are very friendly/sweet.

Allllrighty then. Perhaps a prior reviewer came in on an off-night (Sunday of Memorial Day weekend) or the owners poorly planned for their hamachi/yellowtail stock. I showed up on the Tuesday after that weekend, and there was plenty of yellowtail. I'm sorry that the last reviewer's experience was a bummer - it's just that ours was completely to the contrary.
Admittedly my wife and I were skeptical of a random sushi place on the north shore but were pleasantly surprised. The hostess was friendly and was also our waitress...my green tea was always full to the brim and I was courteously asked (during and after) if everything was ok and how my experience was.
The maki are slightly smaller than you might find at a Ginza or an Oishi but priced appropriately or even better (say $9 for a fancier roll vs. $12 where you'd get a slightly bigger one elsewhere). Nigiri are cut standard. Fish was fresh, colorful, and tasty and I've had plenty of sushi around the country (NY, Boston, Seattle, SF, and in-between). No complaints there.
We also split some Tonkatsu and Tempura - the batter was light and crispy but melts in your mouth. The chicken in the tonkatsu was tender and not dried out, so big thumbs up there.
Unless someone else was running the show, given the music playing and what was being spoken that day, the owners/staff are Korean. Plenty of Korean folk own sushi restaurants in the Boston area - you'll usually notice some Korean items on the menu as well. If I try those dishes I'll update my review.
We were very happy with our experience and b/c we live nearby, we're glad we have a new spot now! Will definitely return. -

Whew.
I just moved here from Seattle and luckily I live near a sushi place! I was a bit hesitant, but was led in the right direction by fellow yelpers. The exterior is a bit of an eyesore. However, the interior is very clean and nicely decorated.
The sushi is pretty good. While it's far from top quality, it's enough to satisfy my needs. The place also serves korean food and hot dishes. I tried one dish, but it wasn't to my liking. I'll give the hot food another chance.
Clean interior. Nice servers. Priced just right! -

So what the heck does the land of greek pizza and roast beef (the Northshore) know about sushi?! I had very low expectations of getting sushi from a place that's a stone's through away from the Cabaret in a strip mall on route 1. However as someone that's recently gone to Japan I must say Fuji sushi delivers some well made sushi with quality ingredients.
The decor is also very reminiscent of the everyday restaurants you could get sushi in Tokyo or Kyoto. There is a small selection of sake, beer, and wine but I had green tea, complete with brown rice. I had the Tuna lovers entree which had some the best spicy tuna maki and tuna sushi I've had. The entree came with miso soup and side salad with ginger miso dressing.
The maki was rolled well, the rice was well seasoned, and the pieces sized just enough to pop into your mouth. The meal was topped off with green tea ice cream tempura battered and fried with whipped cream and chocolate sauce which was just as awful as the sushi (haha).
Fuji Sushi is very reasonably priced good quality sushi in a comfortable atmosphere that only suffers from it's location. There is not anything extraordinary on the menu but the offerings are very good. Don't pass Fuji Sushi by, it's well worth it. -

Fuji... why have you forsaken me? Really, when this place first opened the quality of the sushi was impeccable! However as this place has become more and more popular the quality of the sushi has taken a nose dive. The maki was ok, but the nigiri was barely edible, the fish smelled...well fishy, which is a sure sign that it may not be in its freshest state... The sticky rice wasn't sticky (just disintegrated as soon as it went into it's soy bath). What a dang shame, the owner is a really nice guy but there are plenty of sushi places in Rt. 1 which just leaped frogged over this place in an instant.

Been here once, and it was well over two years ago. I remember the sushi being really fresh and I really want to come back again. I really wish I could remember which roll it was I had, but there's a crunchy salmon roll (that very well could be the name) that was VERY good. The service was good.

I want to start by saying that I frequent Fuji Sushi quite often and usually enjoy it. Tonight, it couldn't be further from the truth.
The service was the worst service i've ever experienced. When we walked into the restaurant, we weren't greeted. She pointed over to the dining room for us to seat ourselves. The waitress finally came over and asked us for our drink order, we gave them. When we ordered our maki rolls we had asked a few questions and she wasn't friendly or educated on what they were serving. She had no personality whatsoever. At the end of the meal we were figuring out the tip and she just took our check away. When we left, I responded saying, "Thanks, have a good night" she stood there with her hand on her chin, leaning on the counter and didn't say a word back.
I was so dissapointed. The sushi here is really good and relatively inexpensive, but if this waitress continues to work here, it's going to hurt their business. I know that if I see her again, i'll go in, then walk right out. That's how bad it was.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Jodi B.
Salem, MA
There comes a time in every person's life when they realize, in one gut-wrenching, life-altering moment, that their parents are mere humans, capable of making mistakes. Capable of leading their children down a path that, in hindsight, is not the best choice. I had such a moment last night when I ate at Fuji Sushi based on Yelp's rating.
The drive to the restaurant was filled with delicious anticipation. The words "orgasm on a plate" kept flashing through my mind as I reflected on the sheer happiness that only a truly good sushi place can deliver. You see, I have recently moved to Salem from Watertown and the distance I was placing between myself and New Ginza was a cross that was not being born lightly.
When we arrived at the plaza location, mere minutes from the Cabaret Strip Club, I shrugged it off. Everyone is entitled to good sushi, I theorized, even half-naked women and the men who love them. As I approached the door, there like a shining beacon was the little Yelp! sign, further affirmation that I need not fear. So, when I walked in and was met first, by the bright, lime green walls and then a morose hostess/waitress who could barely muster the energy to lift her head and look our way, let alone smile, my confidence faltered. A glance back at the Yelp! sign gave me the courage I needed to follow her a table. Ours was the third table with patrons, a decidedly concerning sign at 7:00 PM on a Sunday night of a long weekend.
We placed our drink orders, water with lemon and green tea. When the waitress brought back our drinks they were sans lemon. She obviously left the lemon in back, with her personality. No matter, I was eager to order since they had an inspired maki selection. For sushi we selected: salmon, tuna, striped bass, toro, red snapper, yellowtail and we picked two maki. "No yellowtail," she replied and I stared at her dumbfounded. I refused to believe that this miserable waitress who was so filled with apathy that she spoke without moving her lips, like a ventriloquist, had just told me that they didn't have yellowtail. NO YELLOWTAIL??? I was bereft, especially since that also wiped out a good 30% of their maki selection.
Eventually the two other tables cleared out and we were left alone in this strange, yellowtail-free universe. The sushi chef called to the waitress who was back sitting in her seat, a slight disagreement ensued. It was in Japanese and although I do not understand Japanese it roughly translated to,
"Get off your ass and do something."
"I like to sit on my ass and do nothing!"
"I am going impale you with my sushi knife if you don't do something!"
"FINE!!!"
At which point she brought us out celery and carrot sticks that sat in a puddle of water upon a plate with ginger dressing. I was beginning to get worried. Could Yelp have steered me in the wrong direction?? When the tempura came and it was really delicious I started to feel better. But alas, even crispy, savory tempura could not save this night. The sushi arrived and we stared at the plate with quiet disappointment. Half of the enjoyment of sushi is seeing the artistry of the service. Unless our sushi chef was going with a minimalist, bland technique there was zero artistry. Everything looked pale and washed out. The salmon lacked the pinky-orange flesh , the tuna was a grayed-out version of it's typically ruby self. There was no design, no fake little blades of green grass. The waitress just dropped the plate off without bothering to point out the different types of fish, which I sometimes don't need but since all the fish was almost the same color, I could have really used the lesson.
And, as we feared, the flavor of the sushi matched the blandness of its color. There was no sweet, ocean flavor to the snapper, no rich, buttery consistency of the salmon. Instead, everything tasted like rubber dust. Our cucumber roll with salmon, tobiko and cream cheese tasted like nothing but water, which I found came in handy since the waitress never returned to replenish my drink.
So there I sat, with a hefty dose of buyer's remorse and the realization that even my trusted, omnipotent Yelp can sometimes get it wrong. The world lost a little bit of it's wonder that night and I left Fuji Sushi a more jaded version of myself. -

while not as 'fancy' as some other Japanese restaurants in the area, the food, service and prices are the BEST. The staff is always warm and welcoming to us. The selection is excellent. We LOVE Fuji Sushi

This is the best sushi restaurant we've been to on the North Shore so far. We are regulars here. We usually get the miso soup, edamame, and two maki rolls. I recommend the super crunch maki and the spicy tuna roll.

If you care anything at all about ambiance, you will be turned off by this place that has "mood lighting" courtesy of the gas station right in front of its nondescript mini-mall storefront. And, if waiting almost an hour for their lone sushi chef to fulfill your order is OK with you, because you're enjoying the view of passing cars on route 1, good for you. But, after enjoying said lighting and waiting, when your sushi's rice is dry and hard, you will likely vow not to come here ever again. Which is too bad, because all things considered, the cuts of fish were pretty good, and the seaweed salad was consistent with that served at any sushi place anywhere. They need more waitstaff, a couple more sushi chefs, and a fresh batch of sushi rice ALWAYS. If they can pull that off, then maybe, maybe, the next time I'm stopping for gas, I will pull into Fuji Sushi. I just hope that the gas I get fills my car and not my stomach.

Excellent sushi at a casual restaurant. It's so good that I drive from Southie to North Shore for it. The portions are double what you would pay in Boston for half the price. This place has the best specialty rolls that you can't get anywhere else. Also free parking and kid friendly.

So what's the deal with the good reviews?
Fuji is a tiny place located behind a gas station. The place was small and not so private, which I did not mind until lo and behold... "Hey... don't you think the sashimi smell kinna funny?" says the boyfriend.. I could smell the fishyness from the salmon and tuna which I had to hold my breath and wash it down with tea, btw, was never refilled.
I admit, their special makis are nicely presented. The Super Crunch Maki looked too cute to eat.
However my bf wasn't happy with the service or the sushi. We'd pay more at Sake for the quality. -

I love this place, the sushi is spot on and the selection is awesome. The sushi chef is super cool and he always seems to have a smile on his face. The deco inside is ok, the location is right off Rt 1 behind a gas station, but hell don't let that deter you away. Once your inside you don't its out there. And once the food comes out it wont matter where you are. If you love sushi, try this place. I am slowly trying sushi restaurants around the Boston area and still I am always comparing the others to this one.

Fuji sushi is tucked away in one of those little plazas on rte 1 south. I got a couple of Maki rolls when I came here - the Fire Dragon Roll and Spicy Salmon. I also stole a little of my friend's rainbow roll. I enjoyed all 3 of them, with the Fire Dragon Roll being the best. My friend got the unagi-don which he liked, too. Great place, and I'll be back for more!!

I love Fuji sushi. The food is consistantly good. We live close by so always get the take out. So I can't speak to the table service.

This is the best sushi I've had since moving to Boston from Chicago. At first I was displeased because it took about 30 minutes to get our food and we were one of 3 tables. But when the sushi got there, WOW! I absolutely had to forgive their slowness and I will definitely be going back again and again. Oh, and they're REALLY cheap too!

I am partial to the sushi in Southern Califonia, but this place is very good for the Boston area. This is a modest place with good service and fresh fish. It may be hard to find, but it's worth the trip.
