Every time we eat here, my wife says,"we have to come back tomorrow." I try to keep her somewhat under control but one of the great things about Fuji is that you can explore around and excellent center of Japanese cuisine and get more than the sushi, teppanaki or tempura and still keep coming back for more..
Tonight, we were in the mood for sushi and selected accordingly. Top on the list for flavor was the tuna guacamole roll, a tuna guacamole wrapped in a delicate salmon fillet. The super fatty tuna and yellow tail rolls were exquisite. Sushi here makes me realize that grocery store sushi is an ethnic slur.
On the menu was also an entree of panko fried jumbo oysters that has tempted me several times but I wonder if my gout can take it..... its most likely worth the pain.
Desert, which I usually don't partake in but tonight seemed to be the appropriate filler was a superb banana tempura and a lovely red bean paste on vanilla ice cream.
The best sushi I've had in a long time coupled with excellent service and a pleasant decor. I'd say that this is the best restaurant that Haddonfield has to offer and I'd risk saying that you could look far and wide in South Jersey to top it. -

Fuji is as good as it gets! I've been here multiple times and each time I am constantly amazed at what Chef Ito comes out with for his Omakase. Sitting at the bar is the best way to appreciate his food and creativity.
I would eat here more often but it would become an expensive habit! :) You can taste the freshness in the sushi. My favorite dish is the diver scallops with a dash truffle oil and the spanish mackeral. All items are not on his regular menu.
I use to think Morimotos was the best but by far Fuji's is way better. If you're a foodie, definitely check out Fujis. -

We went there, it was empty, they asked if we had a reservation. We said no. They said there was a prefix menu and you had to have reservations. Looked around COMPLETELY EMPTY restaurant, said "f this" and left.
NEVER EVER AGAIN. -

Had the panko crusted squid appetizer, fatty tuna and abalone sashimi, and chirashi. The sauce for the squid was a bit over tangy but everything else was spot on. Good mix of fish in the chirashi and the rice was superbly cooked and seasoned. Presentation was simple, dishes came out in a timely manner, and service was responsive and unobstrusive. Decor was plain and unnoteworthy. The menu was extensive and warrants a revisit. Not a place for a special occasion but definitely for a good, relaxed casual Japanese meal.

I'm in total aggreement with everyone, this place rocks!
A little on the pricey side, but what do you expect from Haddonfield. Very friendly and accomodating staff, but also kind of slow service. Although I'm finding that I'm enjoying it more and more these days, rather than feeling rushed in and out... I guess that means I'm getting old.
Anyway, even if you live in the city and have no car, this place is a mere 2 blocks from the Haddonfield Patco speedline, so you can just jump on the train. I recommend the hot salmon roll and spicy scallop roll.Listed in: FOOD!!!!

Now before anyone gets glove slapping, let me say this place will most likely garner five stars after a few more successful visits.
A fantastic variety of sushi is worth the short drive from downtown Philly to this quiet, elegant restaurant in Haddonfield. It's a BYO, so pick up a favorite Sake or bottle o'vino on the way.
I started with the baby octopus, lightly roasted and tender, the taste was reminiscent of bacon with the smoky, rich flavor that was pulled out of these tiny tasty treats.
Fresh Live Abalone!! OMG yes please. I'm fairly certain this is one of the only places in the area that serves this. Crunchy yet tender, nutty and sweet., wow. Fresh live scallop? Sweet as candy.
Kumomoto oysters are fresh and served with a lovely mignoette interpretation.
Crab cocktail was filled with huge pieced of crab, super fresh, perfectly cooked. Not a hint of anything but firm meaty goodness.
The white tuna ceviche was crazy good. grapefruit wedges separated slices of white tuna. A sprinkle of crunchy fleur de sel was on top of each wedge of grapefruit, a small sliver of jalapeno on top of each slice of fish. with a very light citrus drizzle. This dish was amazing, and I would never have thought to salt grapefruit, it worked perfectly, and the light pop of the jalapeno was a great burst of green on your palate.
Sunomono is served in multiple styles, I went with the simple cold version, which had the lovely addition of udon noodles. Crisp light flavors were a perfect interlude on this hot June evening.
Two white tuna handrolls were served in nori so fresh it crackled and shattered in your mouth. I can't remember the last time I've had food this fresh short of Morimoto or Nobu.
Our final dish this evening was a shashimi plate for two that was crazy good. Salmon so rich the thin slivers of lemon were practically a mandatory addition to prevent the richness from overwhelming your palate. Yellowtail that still tasted of the sun and sea. Amazing fish.
So why not five stars? Three reasons. First, I asked for a bottle of water for the table. I received a soda glass with a straw. My guest received nothing, and had to order his own separate serving. When my glass was empty, it was not refilled, even when I slid it to the edge of the table to clearly indicate I wanted more. By the time staff returned to acknowledge the glass, I was done eating.
Second, while we were there, a family in shorts and tshirts arrived. Now I think it's great bringing your kids out to try new things, but shame on Fuji for not putting them in a separate area of the dining room where their incessant prattle, booth kicking, and constant trips to the bathroom would not entertain the guests who were out for a Saturday night classy dinner. Elitist? Screw you and wear a tie hippie. It's Saturday night and if I'm paying $100 or more a person for a meal, wear a damn collared shirt and get a babysitter.
Third? If an item is no longer available on your menu, remove it or let me know when you hand me the menu. Two main course items and one dessert item I requested were not available.
Price? For the quality of the fish it was an excellent value. Definitely the best Sushi in South Jersey and in the top three in the region.
Call ahead for seating at the Sushi bar of for either of the Chef's special tastings. I'm planning an Omikase here soon!
I'm heading back tonight for another serving of abalone and to try a few more dishes. Hope to see you there!Listed in: Rising Stars and Crown Jewels

Who knew that the best sushi restaurant in a 100 mile-radius of Philadelphia would be a in a suburban mall thingie?
Fuji was amazing. A party of five of us sat at the sushi bar and the owner, Matt Ito, served us the most beautiful omakase on the planet.
Menu:
Started with a tuna tartare, cylinder-tall-food style, topped with creme fraiche and osetra caviar, with a wasabi-laced broth all around it. It was the most perfect tuna I've ever had, and I got all tacky and drank the remainder of the broth out of the bowl.
Next, monkfish liver in a soy broth topped with a bit of horseradish and scallion. It was like raw fish foie gras, and freaking amazing. Very creamy and unctuous but with a sweet briny sea flavor off the top. Never had this before Fuji.
Japanese sardine fillets topped with wasabi tobbikio arrived over some mesclun greens. A strong flavor, but again, not fishy. I don't even like sardines.
A shocker was next- deep fried shad roe. This is a river fish that starts running right about now in the Northeast. The roe pods were rich and fatty with almost no fishy taste. Would be a perfect hangover food.
Had some sashimi after that... sea bream, o-toro, hamachi, scallops, and japanese pink snapper. Every piece of fish was sparkling fresh and had perfect flavor.
Now the lovely kimono-clad servers brought out individual grills and raw strips of real Japanese-grown Kobe beef. We seared our pieces with much smoking, sizzling and delight. This was so tender, it was like meat butter. No chewing required.
The meal was capped off with a cocoa creme brulee.
Completely amazing food, service was excellent, and the wine we had byo'd was perfect with the selection of the omakase. Def. recommend bringing some non-vintage Champagne, sour beers (gueuze) and white Burgundy with lots of minerals to play up the delicate flavors of the fish.
Matt Ito is amazing and his restaurant is so fierce, it's practically homicidal. -

I had a hankering for some sushi and always heard positive things about Fuji, so I decided to give it a try. The restaurant is located in one of the miniature mall-type buildings on Kings Highway in Haddonfield. The sign out front makes it relatively easy to find, and there is free parking on nights and weekends in the back.
My meal was basic, but exactly what I wanted. Clear soup, edamame, two pieces each of yellowtail and tuna sushi plus a spicy tuna hand roll. And a salt lick. Just kidding. Luckily, my salt-a-thon was followed shortly thereafter by a boot camp class.
I found some items to be a little on the pricey side when compared with other restaurants of similar caliber in the area. Still, everything was prepared well and was of a high quality. I would certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Haddonfield area who wants great, uncomplicated sushi without having to travel very far to get it. -
Review from Percy N.
Matt Ito has created an institution over the past decades and his recent move to Haddonfield has fortunately not affected the quality and taste of the wonderful dishes he creates.
Sitting at the sushi bar and ordering the Omakase is the way to go, though you can't go wrong with any sushi or sashimi you order.
I have had Omakase at Morimoto several times and actually prefer this place for its superior quality and better value.
Finding this place is a little challenging, but how else can we keep this place a secret ;-)Listed in: Favorite Restaurants -…

I was looking for a new sushi place since the one I had been frequenting, Megu, has diminished over the past year. My boyfriend suggested we try Fuji Japanese Restaurant as he had heard great things about it.
Well, the reviews were 100% correct. This place serves stellar quality sushi. The tuna just melted in my mouth and the flavors were just incredible. While we looked at the menu, we noticed that there weren't a lot of frills regarding the sushi style. It was all simple, elegant and clean - which I thoroughly enjoy. For instance, you're not going to find a roll here with 10 different items rolled into one and smothered in some sort of crazy sauce. While that can be fun sometimes, it's good to go back to basics. And when the basics are executed as well as Fuji does, you won't want any of those frills any longer.
The service was incredible. Very friendly staff. The decor was just like the food - simple, elegant and clean. I was very comfortable here and will most definitely visit again soon. -

I think they have it with location and atmosphere but the food is lacking. I was there on 8/13/11 and had the uni special. It was good, as well as the grilled octopus. The chirashi was sad, small pieces and cold rice. There was CRAB STICKS in the chirashi. Tome that is a total failure for a sushi bar. Sagami is still by far the best

Your standard Japanese restaurant with a variety of cooked kitchen items and a sushi bar. Most everything we had here was pretty good - we had the ankimo with ponzu, some tuna-avacado tartar, age-tofu... Only complaint was that the prices was steep for what it was; ex. 1 piece uni was $5.. same tray, same supplier, same type of uni as some other restaurants, but priced for more.
I was happy that they did have tokobushi, but I expected differently. The menu said "live abalone".. I figured I would get the whole thing sliced on a shell or something like that .. instead I got 2 very thin (too thin for abalone) slices.. no way I could tell whether it had really been live just prior to this or not.
This is a BYOB, too. -

Fuji has come a long way from Route 130 in Cinnaminson, where eminent domain made them move. The move which gave the Chef owner time off to refresh himself and has worked wonders. Now the restaurant was good at it's old location and I even saw a sushi chef from another restaurant eating there one night, so I took that as an omen of good things.
The Haddonfield location is nicely appointed and the staff attentive. Meals typically start with a warm moist towel. The fish always tastes fresh and they are known on OCCASION to get some rarer fish, such as toro and others that I cannot pronounce or spell. Portions lean toward European size (read small) but very tasty. Without a doubt one of the best sushi restaurants in South Jersey. -

A truly great place with nicely down atmosphere and great food.
It is more than a sushi place (though sushi are good, you could get a better bang for your buck elsewhere), rather an actual restaurant with a stellar menu.
I would strongly recommend the place and would suggest to pre-order the chef's special - it is more than worth its price ($80). -

This is a place to experience authentic Japanese cuisine and in my case the best sashimi (crazy good uni, eg) in the area (with all due respect I pick Fuji over Sagami and Morimoto). In short, they are a high quality family run Japanese restaurant. I wish I were there now.

Really bad experience after several good meals here. Service was incredibly slow even though they were not busy on a Saturday night. Had to wait 10 minutes then ask for sake glasses. Did not take our order for another 15 minutes and it took over 45 minutes to get our sushi. My daughter had a tuna roll and the fish was way off. Had to send it back. Fresh salmon tasted smoked. Not a good night. Nice family run place in hidden Haddonfield location that has been much better in the past. Maybe just a bad night. I have better choices for fresh sushi in South Jersey (Oh Yoko) is my favorite.

Review from John B.
Philadelphia, PA
I agree with others who have commented on the Chef Matthew Ito's omakase. The chef has the pride for the dishes he prepares. Chef Ito, my wife and I were constantly engaged in little chit chat about food, Japan, Korea, and the dishes he prepared. He was telling us stories of when he was a FuGu sushi chef back in Japan, of the ramen shops he used to visit after work in Osaka, of the Korean food he likes. The whole experience was exactly what's missing in most Japanese restaurants around this area.
The meal itself was amazing. We came looking for sushi but what we got was a lot more. In Chef Ito's words, Japanese food tends to be on the flatter note, so he likes to mix things up. The result is French techniques and Japanese flavor, plus traditional Japanese food. Not sure if that's how he intended but our meal looked that way. The tasting menu was the following:
-Consomme with scallops, clams, shrimp, shitake mushrooms served on teapot. It's thicker than dashi, almost like a Japanese version of bouillabaisse.
-Kumamoto oysters, raw. Meaty, fresh oysters served on half shell
-Sliced diver scallops served raw with shaved truffle and olive oil. Super delicious. Generous amount of truffle makes the dish pungent and aromatic.
-Eel and uni souffle. Eel more than uni is a star here. The dish had such deep flavor from eel, uni, and souffle (not sure if he used uni paste with the egg).
-Octopus salad with seared foie gras with ponzu dressing. The foie gras is perfectly seared and octopus is melt-in-your-mouth tender. I always rave about Raddichio Cafe's octopus; Chef Ito's octopus preparation was much better.
-Assorted sashimi: hamachi (yellowtail), kanpachi (amberjack), tai (sea bream), maguro (tuna), salmon (sake), outer edge of fluke and monkfish liver on ponzu dressing. The tuna was just a-okay. But the quality of hamachi, kanpachi, and salmon was melt-in-your mouth delicious. And I haven't seen outer edges of fluke in non-Korean sashimi places (Korean places serve a whole fluke as a sashimi, head to tail...so you get to eat the side meat). The fluke side meat and monkfish liver were also top-notch.
-Squab, cooked slightly under medium-rare, served with heart and liver on the side, on ponzu based sauce. Chef Ito explains, if squab is cooked right, it brings out the natural sweetness of the meat. And it did! The preparation was french but the flavor was Japanese.
-Dessert. I got the traditional Japanese treats with redbean paste. My wfie got "dessert eggrolls". I didn't like the dessert that much to be honest. But it might be because we were so full before the dessert came out.
After the meal, Chef Ito tells us, "Now I know what kind of things you like. Next time, I make it better for your taste". That's the level of attention and effort Chef Ito puts into pleasing the customers. And I appreciate that. When I complement the freshness of the ingredients (compared to other places), Chef Ito tells us that every Japanese place gets the same shipment...so they all should have the same freshness. I ponder...whether the pride and attention he puts into his food is the difference maker.
You can count on me being back here sometime soon. I would recommend the place to anyone who are looking for an awesome foodie experience. Just one thing...do yourself a favor and do not order a california roll when you come here. -

Terrific, elegant Japanese restaurant nestles in the South Jersey suburbs. We ordered Gyoza as the appetizer - I enjoyed it, but my dining companion found them soggy. For sushi, we ordered a tropical roll, spicy tuna roll (which wasn't listed on the menu) and a BBQ eel roll. I found them all delicious and fresh tasting. The nigiri sushi we had - salmon and yellowtail - were also fresh and tasty. Service was not the speediest but very polite and pleasant. Next time we find ourselves in the suburbs at dinner time, I would definitely go back.

This is such a treasure! This place is good for both lunch and dinner. Even at lunch, they have some interesting food options (not just the usual teriyaki, although even that's really good here since they make their own teriyaki sauce). My best experience was my omakase dinner at the sushi bar. I got some great food for a really good price, especially compared to what they charge for omakase at places like Morimoto. I even got chatted up by a Japanese gentleman who offered me a glass of sake from the bottle he brought with him. It seems like he got a lot more of an adventurous selection than I did, including a fish head. If I have another opportunity to go, I'll have to ask Chef Matt to give me the adventurous menu. For omakase, call ahead of time so they can expect you. They will give you dinner according to what you are willing to pay- $50 and up. It's a great place that few people know about.

Honestly, I challenge anyone who did not give Fuji five stars. I demand satisfaction! (glove to face). What the hell are you thinking? Fuji (specifically Chef Matthew) dominates it all. From fish jowl to insanely tender octopus, to truffle covered scallop to duck topped with foie gras to tender squab Fuji does it all! Go to the counter and simply say, "feed me the meal of my life" and I can promise you, Chef Matthew will do just that. And please, don't go there to order the chicken teryiaki, that's just a sin with the incredible food that the talented chefs put on the table. To Fuji, "I am not worthy."
