Review from Abby W.
Mmmm! I adore the Mongolian beef at Fugu's. It is so tender and flavorful that it practically melts in your mouth. The large portion never hurts either! Being a non-sushi lover, and dating a sushi fan, I'm always happy when I can find a place with great cooked Japanese/Chinese food to accompany my boyfriend's sushi and this La Jolla spot fits the bill.
We decided to stop in on a Friday afternoon after seeing a $10 for $20 deal on Groupon. Being in the area already, we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is nicely decorated and, as it was about 3 p.m. on a weekday, mainly vacant. Our waitress was friendly, prompt and informative.
My boyfriend ordered the Sexy Roll and the Shrimp Tempura and gave them an 8 out of 10. While the flavor was spot on, he thought the price was steep ($12-13ish for the roll). Thankfully, the $10 Groupon special made it more affordable but without the deal, prices can add up quickly. -
Review from Deborah L.
San Diego, CA
I was given a $10 credit to purchase a Groupon Now! deal and stumbled upon this restaurant to apply it to. The deal was $10 for $20 worth of food and with the applicable complimentary credit, I essentially had $20 worth of free sushi!
Excellent customer service. Refills and paper napkin requests came at lightning speed (I never use cloth handkerchiefs..only paper napkins..sorry for not being very environmentally friendly)
As I was using their restroom (very standard interior, nothing special), I came across a very special announcement. If you dine with a party of 8 or greater, the restaurant offers your party 15% off your bill. I thought this was pretty neat, considering how most restaurants actually charge you an extra 15% gratuity when you have that big of a party.
Anyway, on to the food, we ordered the Fugu roll and the 3 Mixed Sashimi Combo. I recommend both, as the first is very delicious and the latter a very reasonably priced order. The 3 Mixed Sashimi Combo was only $15 for 4 salmon, 4 tuna, and 3 albacore pieces!
It was a packed night so I'm sure all the other customers enjoy the food here as well. Take advantage of the Groupon Now! or the Yelp deal going on now! You won't be disappointed :) -

My husband and I came for lunch midweek and we only ordered sushi. Jon was our sushi chef and he was really great. The quality of the sushi was spot on, the portion was right, and the ginger they serve is really tasty (not hot pink).
We will definately come back. -

San Diego, CA
I like this place. Its a nice restaurant only a couple blocks from the beach. The sushi is good. They have some fancy looking ones. It's not the most authentic japanese food but I like it. Their portions are big but it's kinda pricy. Even with the groupon. The service was rather slow but I didn't mind. It kept my apetite growing... aw I'm hungry now.

Review from Oregon Girl Z.
Portland, OR
Yikes. I kind of feel sorry for these people.. the employees were really nice.. But EWWWW!!! This is a Chinese/Sushi bar and didn't realize it until after we were already sitting. The photos on yelp are incredibly beautiful. There is no way they are from this place. The calamari was the size of onion rings and discustingly chewy. Our spring rolls were drippig with grease, they brought out a Mt Soledad roll ($12.50) and our server said it was a candied lemon that was on fire. After taking a big ol lick of the "sugar" on the lemon, we quickly realized it was SALT! Sick. This is not to mention the soggy mess that roll was.
The place was totally chaotic, we had several people waiting on us. One of which was dripping sweat. Food took forever and they apologized because they were so "busy". But they only had 4 other tables! This place is sad. I am scarred. -
Review from SlyFox M.
Omaha, NE
Not being from California and looking forward to good sushi & myself working at a thriving, busy & quality efficient sushi restaurant I was expecting and looking forward to fresh, local fish.
We started off with calamari and spring rolls that wasn't anything more than okay. When we finally ordered our sushi we started with the Fugu Crispy which is basically the cheeseburger of sushi all deep friend and hard to swallow. The last thing we received after we were done with everything else was a dish (Not even a roll) Called the Mt. Soledad. After it came out in flames the waiter had not a clue what ingredients were even in it and guessed, we soon found he was wrong.
This was an overall horrible experience and embarrassing for it is in such a ritzy great area of California. -

La Jolla, CA
We went for lunch the other day, and we were pleasantly surprised. It wasn't too busy, although the service could have been a little better, especially on our drink refills. Their fish is very fresh, and they don't skimp on the rolls. Their house salad dressing is also unique, with a citrus flavor to it.
The only downside to Fugu's is the parking.... Street parking is terrible there. Although, I think there is a parking structure in the back, but I have never parked there before, or know how crowded it gets. -

I'll update this review as I expand on experiences here. I ordered an entree for takeout and did not dine in.
After a few unsuccessful attempts to find decent Chinese food in the area (see: China Chef, China Inn), I was about ready to give up before coming upon Fugu's.
The decor is nice. The staff (I only spoke with the hostess) friendly. Great location (across from the Comedy Store / Ferrari of La Jolla).
I ordered the orange chicken and it was, by far, the best example of this dish that I've ever had. The chicken was of good quality and fresh. I can't stand having to gnaw through tough pieces of chicken at Chinese restaurants, and this certainly wasn't the case. The rice was fresh and soft - not crunchy or old. Considering I ordered at an off-time (around 3 PM), I would have even forgiven this.
Definitely recommended. -

Came here for a friends birthday.
I typically do not go out and find sushi, but my friends were really craving it, and we found this place on yelp.
Thanks everyone!
--/// Reception and decor 3/5
We walked into a completely empty restaurant (literally... one or two tables occupied in a 20-25+ table house) at 6:00pm on a Sunday-- should be prime-time, so this made me little antsy. But faster service right?
Wrong. It took us about 10 minutes to get seated. But it's ok. The waiters and waitresses were very friendly, and apologized for the wait.
We chose seats by the sushi bar.
The decor was very simple-- nothing too flashy or exotic. But nicely decorated with hints of Japanese augments here and there. Very clean, and well kept restaurant.
Not a die-hard fan of raw fish, but I definitely felt comfortable eating here.
They have a few flat screens all around the restaurants, so it's a pretty nice place to catch the game.
PRO TIP:
Try to sit near the sushi bar. With a place like Fugu, you won't have a problem with freshness-- they make all their sushi on demand despite the longer preparation time it takes. But, sometimes with other restaurants, they'll have all the sushi pre-made and just dish out the pre-made ones to the people ordering away from the bar.
--/// Food 4/5
We ordered the following
1. DH1, Tiger Roll, California Roll, Eel Roll, and an Eel Bowl.
Took a while to get out despite a relatively empty house, but when it finally arrived... it was delicious.
DH1
They were out of of Yellowtail that they needed to make this particular dish. Disappointing because it appeared to be very early in the night.
Tiger Roll
Which consisted of shrimp tempura, crab meant ,and eel-- ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. The crunchy texture of the shrimp had a perfect batter, and complemented the crab and eel very well. The
California Roll
Very good as well. The staple of Japanese sushi-cuisine.
Eel Roll
Fantastic. The slight crispness of the eel boded very well for the bite as a whole. I was a little skeptical about trying something so exotic, but I am glad I did.
We watched the chef prepare the food in front of our eyes.
Eel Bowl
Came very late-- literally when we finished all our sushi. But was delicious.
---
Overall, the food portion seemed just about right (not over-bearing, but not leaving you hungry) just enough to satisfy you.
The ingredients were all fresh, freshly prepared, and simply delightful in presentation and taste.
A little on the salty side-- they tend to sprinkle soy-sauce and terriyaki sauce atop of all their dishes, but still great nonetheless.
---/// Dessert 3/5
Green Tea Ice Cream
Tasted like vanilla ice cream, but with green food coloring-- not bad... just no hint of green tea whatsoever
---/// Service 5/5
Extremely friendly, prompt (except for the reception), and professional.
They honored by yelp deal!
Eddie, the sushi chef, despite being extremely busy, took time to make conversation with the patrons sitting at the bar. He was really friendly, and made the night very enjoyable.
---/// Would I come back?
YES.
Overall I had a very positive experience with Fugu.
Despite taking a little on the longer side to prepare the food (they could go for an additional sushi chef during peak hours), I was glad that they made everything fresh on demand-- definitely tasted the difference.
And, despite being on the pricier side for a dinner alone (came out to be 15-20 dollars a person)... for a night out-- I would definitely recommend this restaurant to a friend, and would definitely come back again. -
Review from RAD R.
San Diego, CA
The sushi here was some of the best and freshest I've had since moving to San Diego. The service was great - our waitress was very attentive and even gave us complimentary edamame while we were waiting for our rolls to come out. She was super friendly and kept our water glasses full.
Initially we were worried because the restaurant was empty when we arrived, but by the time we left it had filled up quite a bit (plus, the food was amazing so there was no reason to worry). I would recommend the Fugu Roll, Sexy Roll, and the Lemon Roll.
The only con about this place is that you can't get happy hour specials (which run all day - 50% all drinks!) when you use any other coupon, but I think that's pretty common so not really a big deal. The prices are pretty standard (maybe a little high) but I think the sushi is worth it. Oh, and they were out of the beer that my boyfriend ordered but also not a deal breaker--it happens.
All in all, I would highly recommend this place and will definitely be going back! -

The cooked food was average, the sushi was good. Waitress serving food was nice but the original male waiters taking the order seemed lacking in service.

Went in here because the kids were hungry and we were looking for something quick.
Service was excellent, staff were friendly, food was good, prices were very reasonable.
We have been back a few times now (mostly during happy hour) and have even taken to calling ahead to order fried rice to keep the kids happy while we chose sushi.
Particularly good if you have kids with you, -

San Diego, CA
The sushi was great but the service was so terrible I'd never return. Our waitress had a very hard time understanding the questions we had regarding the menu, and we had to ask multiple times for things (a side of spicy mayo, more water, etc.). They never brought out one of the rolls we'd order- we waited a really long time for it to come out and by the time we finally relized the waitress had never even put the order in, it was just too late and not worth the wait. We had eaten everything on the table and the waitress didn't come check in on us to give us our check for probably 20-25 minutes after we had finished. So, like I said, the sushi was good, but just not worth the service.

This place looked like a game of diner dash gone bad. Was looking for a new place to try and I really wanted to like this place, but after waiting over 20 minutes of not even getting my order taken or not even being offered anything to drink its really difficult. I felt bad for the few workers I saw there but really where was the management in this place?!? Right when I walked in I immediately noticed that were several tables with food and trays laying on them, not even cleaned nor even touched during my wait. Most of the customers looked like they all had been waiting forever, I realized I should have gotten the hint right away but I was really trying to be optimistic. Walked right out and the server didnt even realize that he still hadnt taken our order or drinks. Wish I could give this place zero stars, what a waste of time.

I would probably give it 3.75 stars if I could.
Service 4/5
Food 3.5/5
Prices 5/5
Overall look and ambiance 3.5/5
The food isn't bad but at the same time there is nothing great about it either. I ordered with veggie spring rolls, Mongolian chicken and house sake. They gave me my entree before the appetizer, which is odd to say the least. The Mongolian chicken was pretty good and the spring rolls were what you would expect but the house sake was disgusting and made my friend gag at some point. They should definitely increase the quality of that even if it means bumping up the price a bit.
They also offer Japanese food but I did not try that. At the end of the day, there are a few places within a couple blocks that offer more quality for comparable prices. I doubt I would go there again even though their service was excellent. -

I have eaten a lot of sushi places and since my uncle is a sushi chef, I have been spoiled with fresh fish. Every time I go to different sushi places, I can always taste how old the fish is being used in the sushi.
Fugu's is THE place to go for fresh sushi. I have been lucky to go to Fugu's on different occasions, trying different rolls, and I LOVED all the rolls I had. If you are like me and love sushi, go here. -

I love the sushi here. Sit at the sushi bar and let Tommy take the reigns. I love the garlic rubbed white tuna (i think thats the type of fish) seroously mouth watering, sexy roll and fugus roll are standouts too. The walnut shrimp dish is "phenomenal" according to my boyfriend. Fugu's is a relaxing environment with delicious food and friendly faces.

Escondido, CA
I've always had great experiences with Fugu's. It's been awhile since I've been there, but by looking at the menu, it's still has excellent prices. The fish was always fresh and the sushi chefs very friendly at the bar. I'm a bit of a sushi snob, so I wouldn't recommend it if the sushi wasn't very fresh and delicious. :)

Review from Celia m.
Santa Monica, CA
I'm not sure what the other reviews are talking about, but Fugu's delivers high quality sushi-- FOR SURE. It's a modestly decorated, spacious restaurant in La Jolla, and although the atmosphere is a little dim/ quiet, the delicious food will definitely make up for whatever the ambiance lacks.
PROS:
- Fresh, tender fish
- Aesthetically pleasing presentation on the plate
- Friendly & attentive wait staff (they'll sometimes give free edamame. And once, my cashew chicken turned out a little watery, and when I informed them, they apologized and didn't charge me for it)
- Delicious, creative rolls
- Good, solid Chinese/ Korean food as well
- Great lunch & happy hour specials: I mean, come on, $8 for specialty rolls (Fugu's Crispy, Soft Shell Crab, Pink Roll) that include salmon, shrimp, and/or soft shell crab? Can't beat those prices! Not to mention an array of other sushi rolls for $4 and $6. The other lunch specials are anywhere from $7.35 (Chinese combo) - $8.95 (bento box), and include rice plus an array of sides. Happy Hour deals are pretty similar with the sushi, and the appetizers are priced really well too.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Sushi:
1) Fugu's Roll - hands down!!!
2) Holy Moly
3) Sexy Roll
4) Albacore Maniac
Chinese [in no particular order]:
- Sesame Honey Chicken
- Garlic Chicken & Broccoli
- Walnut Shrimp
- Kung Pao Beef
- Any of their pan fried noodles
CONS:
- May not always be as "hip & happening" as us young sprites usually like our restaurants
- Wait staff can be a bit slow during rush hour times
- Prices are a little steep, but hey... what do you expect out of La Jolla? You pay for the location too!
All in all, Fugu's has solid food and service. I may not live in San Diego anymore, but whenever I come back, this always on my to-visit list. -
Review from Suzy S.
Fish was very fresh, but overall it was more of just an "A-OK" experience. Atmosphere was kind of... sterile, almost? It was just very empty (we we were there at about 6pm on a Friday). Plus they were playing Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, so I was really confused. Also, I've seen better happy hours. (Example: Normal tuna roll is $4.50. On happy hour, $4. Huh?)
Our waitress was super nice, and was trying to be helpful as I explained my gluten issues. Even though there was a miscommunication and I ended up dying of gluten poisoning the next day. But I digress. We ordered the rainbow roll off the regular menu, and out of the specialty rolls we had the D.H.1. (tuna and yellowtail), and my partner in crime had the Sexy Roll (scallops and shrimp tempura on the inside, spicy tuna and scallops on the outside.)
Warning: Do NOT try to use any sort of coupon in addition to the Yelp Check-in deal (one free sake) or anything else. There are signs EVERYWHERE explaining that you can't do that. Don't even THINK about asking, man.Listed in: Sushi!

We were out, Sushi sounded great, went in parking was a bit tricky to find. The staff was nice and charismatic. The food was delicious. Very affordable and while we waited for our food took advantage of a check in offer on yelp and got a free hot saki can't beat that!!!
My gal said it was the best egg drop soup she'd ever had. The sushi was great, so fresh and well prepared. My Mongolian beef was an excellent cut, took a bit for it to come out but was worth it
-----OOOO THAT REMINDS ME!!! I have left overs in the fridge

Sushi plus Chinese could be so good... but this place sort of missed the mark. I bought the 15 for 30 coupon and the food was ok, but nothing special. I'd definitely reccomend the sushi rolls over the Chinese entrees/apps.... why is it so hard to find good Chinese in San Diego? Like a few other people said, they could definitely improve on the interior too. Also, my wine tasted like dishwasher detergent :( Nothing makes me sadder.
Maybe I'd suggest takeout sushi from here (with your own wine at home!), but I probably wouldn't be back otherwise. -
Review from Judy L.
San Diego, CA
Being vegetarian, I think it puts me at a disadvantage when I'm at a sushi restaurant. I'm limited to the meatless appetizers, tempura, and things of that nature which I'm sure can't be that great tasting if they mainly focus on sushi.
Anyway, I ordered some vegetable tempura and the vegetable potstickers. They weren't bad. So-so, I guess? I tried some vegetable spring rolls and I don't know what was in it but it LOOKED like it had chicken so that was enough for me to stop eating it. I really hope it wasn't chicken ... Also tried the cream cheese wontons. Who on mother nature's green earth can eat those things!? The texture is so off and I don't know who thought warm cream cheese was a good idea, but they were so wrong.
Friend ordered a bunch of things I have no clue what it tasted like, but I'm sure it was good to their tastes.
I drink an obscene amount of water during meals and they were fine with refilling my cup every now and then.
I happen to think that the waiter/waitress' mannerisms were unbelievably cute though! Awkward and bumbling.
Place isn't too bad to spend some time and eat a meal. -
Review from Lauren B.

My husband and sister-in-law wanted to try a new sushi place and chose this after the great Yelp reviews and $15 for $30 deal. It was not as good as I hoped it would be.
The place was e-m-p-t-y when we arrived at 4:30 on a Friday night. It was a little awkward sitting in a big dining room all by yourself. There wasn't any music and the ambiance was not "delightful" as their website states.
The edamame was mushy. We ordered 3 rolls: Protein #1, Fugu's Crunchy, and Mt. Soledad. They all came out quickly. The first two were OK but the Mt. Soledad was terrible. Maybe it's because we ended our meal with the worst roll, but I don't think we'll come back again.
Also, the $15 for $30 deal is not good with other discounts, like Happy Hour and the Entertainment Book coupon. So plan for that if you're trying to save a buck. -

Edit// 9.3.11
So the owner actually e-mailed me within 2 days of my posting on yelp and expressed his apology and concern about my dissatisfaction on my visit to Fugu's Sushi. He was extremely nice and considerate, offering me and my boyfriend a complimentary dinner with drinks. I am very happy with his great service, and that he took the time to talk to me even though I am one (measly) customer that he could have just overlooked. I added an extra star for this reason. I have not yet gone back for the complimentary dinner yet, but will do so within the month and perhaps edit this review/rating again with my new experience there.
Thanks Tommy! you've officially earned my respect for being a great owner that takes good care of his customers. :]

I came to try out this restuarant with my boyfriend because of the Yelp deal where I paid $15 and could spend $30 at the restaurant.
Coming into the restaurant it smelled really good.
The waiter was nice enough when taking our order, but food came too slow for the little amount of people in there.
We ordered Spicy sashimi, lobster roll, and bulgogi bento box.
The spicy sashimi was the best dish. It tasted good enough; I would give it a 4 star.
The bulgogi bento box was alright, but I've tasted better, so I would give it a 3 star (for average).
Now, to talk about the lobster roll... were they TRYING to feed me fish corpse or what?! I honestly could smell and taste the stinkiness of old shrimp/lobster when I ate that first bite.
Too bad I was trying to be conservative and ate another 2 of those disgusting sushis... only to realize I could've asked for a refund had I not eaten so many pieces. I made a complaint to the waiter whose only response was that he was "sorry" I didn't enjoy the lobster roll.
No... that's not what I want to hear, actually.
At least refund me or give me another dish of equal/lower price for free if you want me to come back again.
Honestly the most disgusting lobster roll I've had in my life-- stank like human and fish corpse put together.
Food-- 2 stars [if not for the spicy sashimi & bulgogi it would've been negative in stars!!)
Service-- 2 stars (do they think we're just kids who can't afford to come back again? pshhh)
Price-- 2 stars (We spent $47 on just those 3 items. And I thought the $30 budget would be enough...) -

Came here for the 15 for 30 deal. It was definitely worth it. The Mt. Soledad roll was really good! It came lit up with a flame in the middle. Pretty awesome. It was wrapped nicely, topped with some lobster meat.
It was my first time coming here, and first timers who check in get a free sake. It was a great deal IF the waitress told us that it did not stack with the 15 for 30 deal. We only found that out when we received the bill. So I told her to give us the 50% off sake deal since it was listed on their sign. She also said that it doesn't work with other discounts. She could have at least told us beforehand. I only got the sake because it was a check in deal. So that was a minus.
But other than that, the food was great. The rolls range from $6-$13 each. $6 was the general california rolls, etc. The yummy ones were in the higer price range, but it was worth it. You get what you pay for. -

This place was good :) I liked the deal through yelp. Logically doesn't work on specials though.
I think the atmosphere could be a bit better. They should invest a bit in making it a nicer looking place. It could most likely be done at a fairly low cost.
Just a thought, maybe some binds on the windows and pretty lighting. That would really add to the experience. -

My friend and I were planning on going to a new area for dinner, and we decided on sushi. Since she works in the LJ Shores area, I yelped sushi places. I chose this places because of the coupons, and reviews, and I'm so glad I did!
This place is very clean. The tables are pretty large so I would think it would be good for big gparties. Service was good! Sushi was fresh!! My favorite roll was the protein #1. We also ordered a salad to split as an appetizer. We ordered the spicy tuna salad. It came with this amazing orange, carrot, ginger dressing, avocado, fresh lettuce, spicy tuna--melted in my mouth! Also, drinks are on happy hour all the time!
Not only did we have such a great time, but we will definitely be back to this place! -
Review from My T.
So we went back here to use our deal since we couldn't use it last time. And I have to admit, the sushi is pretty good, the tiger roll is my fav. However, again, the service REEKS. Our water cups never got filled. Eventually after 20 minutes of waiting with our water cups at the edge of the table, I finally walked up to the waitress and asked her to fill my cup. She rolled her eyes as she took our cups from us. And did we get our water back immediately? Of course not! Typical of this establishment, unfortunately. And then, another waitress had the audacity to clear our table before we even got food! Well at least she got the hint that we've been waiting there forever, but she took it as a cue to clear our table, instead of bringing us food. I want to like this place, at least to give it an additional star, but again, total and utter FAIL.

La Jolla, CA
DH and I have a "regular" Chinese place we've dealt with over the years. I'm on a first-name basis with the owner. The food is hit-or-miss but since I really like the guy, I would feel bad mentioning the place by name.
Since they were closed today, I Googled 'chinese restaurant la jolla' to see if there were other delivery options. I should have done this a long time ago.
First joint that came up was Mandarin House. Visited the (mostly) trustworthy Yelp and found that Fugu's Sushi & Wok, although obviously specializing in sushi, not only had better reviews but was cheaper and had exactly the kind of Chinese dishes we were craving (curry chicken, orange chicken, hot & sour soup, steamed rice). I was especially happy about this because I dislike sushi.
Obviously from the 5-star grade I gave the food we were very pleasantly surprised. I guess we were so used to our old standby that we figured that 'eh' was sorta the standard quality to expect around here. Usually we had to specify white meat when we ordered poultry dishes but, at Fugu's it's a given. A good sign right from the beginning of the phone call.
The driver didn't get lost, the food arrived hot and exactly when promised. I know this prolly sounds silly, but even the packaging was super sturdy - the lidded plastic dishes à la PF Chang's - which in my personal experience is another sign of above-average quality. DH enjoyed the curry chicken immensely, and his palate's hard to please. My orange chicken was not spicy even though that is what I requested, but it didn't even matter because it was so damn tasty. It's rare to find someone who can make it tender on the inside with a bit of crunch on the outside. The sauce was also excellent and there was just the right amount of it. Our hot & sour soup was runny (not used to that) but, oh man - delightful deliciousness with a tasty dark broth, just enough bamboo shoots and not too heavy on the tofu and shrooms. I wasn't used to the type of rice that came with the meal; I'm used to steamed white and this was more of steamed brown - and extremely sticky, which I suppose is required for sushi rolls. It was aiight with a packet of soy sauce dribbled over it. Even their soy sauce brand was quite tangy and yummy.
We were stuck in one of those rare situations where we couldn't stop eating even though we were full...but we did manage to pack up some leftovers. I even friggin' fell asleep on the couch a little while later! Oops.
I suppose I don't have to tell you we will be ordering from there again and again.
Sorry, old friend. -

Went here for dinner on a date night with hubby and like the three stars suggest it was just ok. First off I don't eat seafood of any kind. So when I come to a sushi place its all about the veggie rolls for me. My husband however is an avid sushi eater so we end up going to a lot of sushi places.
We arrived at Fugu's in time for happy hour so most of the stuff we ordered was from that menu. We ordered some cream cheese wontons, tempura veggie roll, miso soup, philadelphia roll, tuna roll, veggie roll, avocado roll, and some salmon, white tuna, and red snapper sushi. Now I've never had a bad cream cheese wonton, whats there to mess up, its cream cheese and won ton, fat wrapped up in carbs. However for some reason the cream cheese wontons here tasted lemony. Not appetizing at all. The tempura veggie roll was my favorite, that roll was the only thing that was actually better than ok for me. It had a wide variety of vegetables in it and was served with some sort of warm delicious pumpkin sauce. Said pumpkin sauce was so good I actually ended up putting it on everything I ate. Everything else we ordered was just ok.
Due to the location of this place and the overall quality of the food here we probably won't be returning. Although I really enjoyed the veggie tempura roll, one item on a sushi menu will not bring me back. Especially when in this same area there are much yummier restaurants to eat at. -

Ok so I know my first review here was somewhat harsh, but I had to be honest. Anyways, earlier this week the NEW owner sent me as message apologizing for my previous experience and told me to come back and give FUGU's one more try. He was very sincere so I figured how could I not. I went back tonight and let me say, I donl't know what they did, but this was SO much better than my first expereince. I got the chicken spring rolls to start which were very good. Great dipping sauce that came with it. Then, the sushi rolls I got were awesome!! They were super fresh and tasted bomb! I got the Sexy roll and the FUGUs roll, both very filling and very, very tasty! I also had the noodle soup which was massive so I couldn't finish the whole thing. Was good, all I wanted were some noodles and got this instead was kind of funny, they def still need to work on service.
So, all in all, I will come back, the new owner, Tommy has certainly stepped it up and seems to be on a mission to bring this spot back to life. If they keep things up the way they were tonight, it won't suprise me to hear more about this place from people around town. If you are in the mood for sushi and are in La Jolla, I have to reccomend this spot after tonight. Pluis this time there was a lot more people, was crowded and happening, and the new decor is nice and upbeat! Way to got FUGU's and thanks for the great meal, thanks Tommy!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Slow service. The dinner took 2 hours for 4 rolls. I had to grab the menu from the counter, and flag a server to order.

"Don't let the all encompassing Asian menu, or live advertisements fool you. For a moderately priced meal in a high priced neighborhood, Fugu's is a great choice." -

Sake, beer, sushi and celebrity sighting all in one night!
Fugu's is already a great place to dine, but what's even better is than their poke is dining amongst famed regulars from The Comedy Store right across the street! There's no other option for my friends and I, especially when we're in La Jolla.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Yasmin C.
Ah, Fugu's, you made me quite happy the other night. My fiance brought me here on Friday to celebrate the end of winter quarter (and my miraculous passing grade in neurology). I was brain-drained, sleep-deprived, and rather cranky...and ready to house any sort of comfort food I could get my hands on.
So what's great about Fugu's? I got my comfort food, in the form of a giant plate of hot, seasoned, salty meat (Kung Pao Chicken), but was also able to please my inner foodie with some amazingly fresh tuna sashimi. Waaaay surprising how good this sashimi was. My fiance's veggie wok with beef was yummy too, and we enjoyed an order of edamame as well (could have used salt, but still good).
Service was awesome...yes maybe because there were only 2 other parties in the restaurant, but the employees just seemed genuinely happy to be there. They ran out of large beers and gave my fiance two smalls for the price of one large...our waitress happily accommodated my fiance's substitution request (beef in the wok instead of chicken)...and at the end of our meal they offered us complementary green tea ice cream, complete with chocolate drizzle. I ate mine and half of my fiance's (fat girl alert). And so that did it...Fugu's, you won me over in true gluttonous fashion. All for under $50 for the two of us...and we both took home leftovers.
Don't let the "fusion" scare you away! Maybe this won't be the absolute best Japanese or Chinese food you've ever eaten, but it's damn enjoyable nonetheless. -

I bought a coupon for this place, and was pretty happy to find that it has good reviews on yelp. Got there and was pretty disappointed. The food wasn't all that great, just your average sushi joint food. Rolls fell apart when picked up. I found it easier to use my hands than chopsticks. The service was probably the worst part. We sat there for a good 20~30 min without someone coming over to take our order. Then, it took another 20~30 min to get our food. They weren't even busy. By the time the tempura came to us it was completely cold. The only thing redeeming about this place is that there were two pieces of zucchini tempura, and we got our check pretty fast. Won't be going back.
