17 reviews for Frugatti's Italian Eatery
every time a co-worker of mine would drive up coffee road we'd pass frugatti's and wonder "what's that all about?!..." so, for lunch one day, we gathered up the troops and had lunch. the decor in the place was of maybe the 1950s? pictures, italian sayings, and italian colors that made me feel like i was in a restaurant in italia. in the hallway towards the restrooms, sophia loren's name was even painted along the wall. didn't know she was italian.
i ordered the linguini in tomato cream sauce. the sauce was very flavorful. my co-worker ordered the eggplant parmigiana and had me taste it. wow, i wanted to trade her for my linguini. if i return to this spot, i know what to order next..
Frugatti's is a good "family" restaurant. I say family, because it's kind of like eating at an italian family's dinner table. The food leans towards home-cooking more than chain-restaurant cooking, and the overall vibe is relaxed.
Now I am biased, since I used to work at Giovanni's in Shafter - the owner's original restaurant. I know the family, and the recipes are AUTHENTIC.
Now I won't be shy with this comment, GIOVANNIS WAS BETTER! But it's been sold to another family and it just isn't anywhere near the same (sorry guys, but it's just another "pizza joint" now).
Keep in mind that Italian home-cooking isn't 5-star dining. It's finding a way to feed 9 people with $5. So you get some flour and make bread and pasta, then you get some tomatoes and spices and make some sauces.. Mix in the meat, and you've got enough food to feed your brood.
THIS is what Frugatti's is.
Some things to note about Frugatti's-
the bread is baked fresh in house.
the cheesecakes and desserts are all made in-house.
that is a real brick oven.
Those are real people's names and pictures on the menu and around the restaurant.
For looking like a big commercial enterprise, this is a real mom & pops shop!
This has been my favorite restaurant for several years and there are plenty of places to eat in Bakersfield. The Bayou Ridge Fetuccini and Crab Ravioli in Sweet Vermouth sauce are two of their finest entrees. If you are in Bakersfield and haven't tried Frugatti's, you are missing the best dining experience in town.
Frugattis is hands-down some of the best Italian in Bakersfield. And theres some damn good Italian joints up in the Valley, let me tell you. Jospehs and Sorella and Rosas, oh my! Frugattis has really stepped their game up in the past few years.
Its a really fun enviroment as well. Definitely a good place to get the night started with some drinks and appetizers or pizza.. or whatever, really. The pizza is choice, though. Its the brick oven they have crackin there. It makes all the difference in the world.
Oh, and if you go, ask for the lovely Heather. She'll hook you up. Tell her I sent you. ;)
Me and a friend visited Frugatti's Tuesday after work.
We were ordering something to go because we were exhausted and had to get back to the hotel to relax.
We walked in and this place was amazing inside. It had tons of fun decorations, Italian sayings written on the wall, and just looked like a fun place to be.
We both ended up ordering the Nonni's Pasta Al Pomodoro (which is a specialty my Italian grandmother makes and my favorite dish at Cafe Luccio in Santa Cruz). Pasta al Pomodoro is pasta with light olive oil, garlic, steamed/diced tomatoes, and fresh basil... pretty simple.
The meal was very flavorful and was steaming hot when we got back to the apartment. There are a few things that keep me from giving this a 4.... number one.. its supposed to be angel hair pasta number two.. no fresh basil in the dish and finally there was too much olive oil residue at the bottom which did not look appealing and didn't taste good!!!
Oh.. and the bread roll was FANTASTIC. Seemed homemade!!!
Overall, I might go back when I am in town on business but alot of people told me to try Urrichios! So we shall see...
Good Italian food - especially for Bakersfield. I really like the rolls. I've ate here several times and never been disappointed.
Been here three times and it's consistently bad. If you want cold food and terrible service, this is the place to go. Not to mention it's a pain in the ass to get out.
I've never had a bad meal here. The place is cute and the food is good.
Some dishes I have tried are:
- chicken with sun dried tomatoes (& feta cheese, yummy)
- baked mostaccioli (I love baked pasta)
- roasted red pepper chicken pizza (good)
- garlic chicken calzone (really good but HUGE & rich)
Went here again a couple of weeks before I left Bakersfield, WOW!!!!!! The food is simply good! I was with a friend and we had split pizza and a salad. We ordered their special garlic dressing for their salad, freaking AMAZING!!!!! I originally gave this place 4 stars, but definitely deserves 5. One of the places I will miss in Bakersfield.

Totally casual place! Cannot complain. Food is good, great place if you have kids. Service is good,… Read more »
Went on a date here the other night. I was excited because I hadn't been in such a long time and I remember my last time (which was probably 4 years ago) to be a fairly good experience. I was also excited...because hello, I was on a date!!!! I love the decor and ambiance and our waitress was nice and attentive but the food was blah. I also remember from past experinces that the bread was really good- yeah, not so much anymore. I didn't like my dish and he didn't enjoy his either. Perhaps we just both ordered the wrong dish. I am not that hard to please. Maybe my memory is bad and it was bad 4 years ago too...who knows? All, I know is that I will not be back anytime soon. Other than that date night was good!!!
This is my favorite every-day Italian place in town. Frugattis is locally owned. They've made so many improvements the past few years with the patio and stringed light and have def. made it feel more Italian that they earn 4 stars.
The food is pretty good - def. above Olive Garden, but not quite as upscale as Urrichio's. I've had their fettucine, lasagna, and wood-fired baked pizzas (the roasted pepper and chicken is good) and was very pleased each time. Small, but decent selection of Central California wine. Service is always pretty good, and the waits - even on weekends - are never really that bad. A much better alternative to Romano's Macaroni Grill and the other places in town.
I love the atmosphere of this place, the decor has a sense of whimsy. This is a family owned and operated restaurant, which makes for great, but slow service. Try the calzone, its wonderfull, and they have a pretty good long island ised tea as well.
I enjoy this quaint little restaurant for a late lunch or early dinner meal.. the food is fantastic, the atmosphere above par and the service excellent.. we eat here so often, we have tried almost the whole menu, without one bad taste in our mouths :D
i don't understand why everybody thinks this place is so great. its dirty, the food is no good, and it's extremely overpriced.
i guess if you don't know any better it's awesome....
we tried this place cuz it had 4.5 stars... 4.5 stars people? well... we were in buttonwillow so we went to 'the city' (of bakersfield) to get food. there's not much in buttonwillow.
so we went here all hungry and excited... 45 min wait! must be good! so we wait in the lil bar and the guy was kind enough to allow us to get appetizers. he was awesome and helpful. more excitement. the lemon drop martini and the chicken things were yummayyyyyyy...MORE EXCITEMENT...and a lil 'tipsy! we got our table w/ the same awesome waiter! whoohooo. he rocked!
but then it went downhill... the water was nasty (ok it's all good i'll get 7up)... the clam chowder was waterey (mmmm... get 7up?)... my husband didn't like the minestrone (i think it had a lot of celery or celery seed or celery salt... i'm ok w/ celery but he's not) bread came late--we had to ask for it but the husband liked it)... the 2 pasta dishes were surprisingly mediocre. the salmon was decent to good. the pizza looked good but i didn't try any. oh the smashed potatoes were yummay.
i guess my expectations were too high. this was like a marie calendars - olive garden. maybe we should have just went to the sonic we passed on the way here.
oh well. we had a great time. great friends. great waiter. full belly. my official rating would be 2.5 stars.
I like this place. I like the service. I like the food. I don't like clowns, they scare me. I digress. Far more flavor than those bullshit chain restaurants that somehow decided that people love bland watered down food. Eat and enjoy.
hit and miss. woulda given it 4 stars but the last 2 times i went my food was like luke warm. portions are great and flavors are great as well.
