The fries here are decent, the crepes be good but a little bland. They have some decent Belgian beers on tap.
Frijtz is ok but not great. Which is surprising because fries, crepes and beer should be a really easy sell.
Overall it's ok for a inexpensive casual dinner but its nothing not worth going out of your way for.
Look, normally I would give this place 4 or 5 stars. Their fries and dipping sauces are to die for, and their mussels are sublime. However, I arrived last night, a Friday, at around 8pm to find out that they had run out of mussels!
I don't know about you, but I find it totally unacceptable for a restaurant whose specialty is mussels and fries to run out of mussels! Get your act together, Frijtz, and please don't make this mistake again!
As of last night, I have tried each flavor of Frjtz's Belgian Mussels (best flavor and deal in town) when I ordered and enjoyed the Sukhothai style mussels. Prepared with coconut milk, lemongrass, red curry and lime juice, this was slightly spicy but the unique taste given by the coconut milk was really different ~ I enjoyed it immensely. At $12 for a bucket containing an average of about 30+ mussels, it's great and with bread to sop in the broth that remains. Still cannot decide which I enjoy most - perhaps a toss-up between the Arles and Uxmal. Try it, you'll like them!!!!
Street construction is going on in the area so the sidewalk in front of Frjtz has been temporarily removed for some weeks now.

We've been going here very frequently these past few months. Last week I tried the Spiennes Mussels,… Read more »
If you looking for a decent French fries, you are in the right place. I had a chance to try last night. It was really good, i got French fries with Wasabi and Bacon Mayo dipping sauce.
This is a great place to grab a very casual, yet very pleasant bite to eat. When with a friend and when in doubt of where or what to eat, Frjtz never disappoints.
Location: This is, of course, the best location in the city, located in the trendy, yet unpretentious Valencia street. Tons to do around at all hours of the day, every day--shopping, eating, sex shops, art, movies, you name, it's here.
Space: I absolutely love the space. It's a very art-deco, modern, artistic, youthful and hipster sort of style. It's kinda of like really high end version of the time of furniture Urban Outfitters would sell. There are some really well thought out pieces throughout the restaurant. I am particularly fond of the Wonder Woman piece the they have in the back in addition to the texture they have on left wall.
Ambience: Pretty diverse crowd, it's the Mission. Mostly hipsters, the affluent, couples of all shapes and sizes. Mostly a young crowd and it's nice to be around young, pretty people.
Service: You go up to the counter, order and then they come give it to your at your seat. This isn't really a service oriented place, which is what makes it so nice and casual; You don't have anyone coming up to your table to ask you if you need anything. The people at the cash register are mostly nice and speak Spanish.
Food/Drink: The food is very bland, but in a good way. It's comfort food, like white people comfort food. There are crepes, sandwiches, omelets, and , of course, frites and frankly, they all taste the same. The taste is good, but it's very parallel among all their dishes, making this place, the perfect place to eat when you do not know what to eat, but also want to eat somewhere pretty. They have some beer and wine, but no hard alcohol, which makes me sad.
Overall: It's pretty, it's 3 blocks from my house, it's good food, come.
Great food, but I honestly think the prices are a little high.
I love the crunchy Rivera salad. I'm a sucker for anything with fresh jicama. The "fritz" are pretty good. Definitely a stoner treat. They also have cold beer on tap, which was an unexpected surprise.
Ambiance is a little odd. The decor is very modern with lots of white plastic and techno music. Not my bag, but then again...I am super particular about that sort of thing.
I met up with a friend here for dinner on her recommendation. Aesthetically, this place is off the chain! High ceilings, very cool white decor with textured walls and interesting art, cool window seat facing Mission, great 80's music, very loungey. And the bathroom.....talk about funky! Cooled tiled mosaic and startling recorded old-style foreign language instruction tapes playing.....I learned how to make a sentence into a question in Polish while I was in there.
All these things listed above were why this place got four stars. The crepes were 3 stars and the fries were 2 star fries. A place called frjtz better have some good pommes frites, people. These fries were pretty bad---were they bought in a giant bag of frozen grossness? Are these really from potatoes, or these potato products? I brought a crepe home for my husband and he liked the crepe but asked if the fries were real potatoes...... 4 stars may seem generous but this place is actually really cool..... The aforementioned icky fries are wrapped in paper all Euro style and served upright in a sundae glass. Great presentation!
They should change their name from frjtz to "White" or "White Lounge" or something.....don't call attention to your terrible french fries.
I've been here at least a dozen times and each time it's been an order of large fries for two please. Although, the main attraction are the fries, the other items like crepes and mussels are also very appealing.
The sauces are so delicious! My favorite is the curry ketchup, but their ketchup with truffle oil & artichoke comes in at a close second. The decor is funky and very chill. The fun part is splitting fries and enjoying a Beligum beer (or two) with a good friend.
Plus, the bathroom is hilarious. I chuckle to myself when I no longer hear music from the main dining area but rather a Norwegian language tape. It's great!
Pass by trying to go to Blondie's Bar and I saw Belgium Fries? OOOHHHH!! That peaked my interest. So we decided to have a little snack consider we had dinner already. End up ordering a small order of fries with Artichoke White Truffle Ketchup and Saffron Aioli. Overall the fries was okay and the dips was okay. I thought it would be better.
The decor of the place is very interesting. They have mood lights on the floor and the bathroom teaches you how to speak french while you do your business. Yes I learned a few things in the bathroom.
I know it really isn't fair to grade you based on a beloved establishment all the way on the opposite side of the country, but tough luck. Life Lesson Numero Uno - LIFE IS NOT FAIR.
With that said, Frjtz, you are no Pommes Frites. When we moved to San Francisco from New York, my gorgeous lover suggested we try your frites because they reminded her of that little hole in the wall on Second Avenue off of St. Mark's...
NO. NO BUENO.
Your selection of sauces, while leagues apart from the run of the mill fast food joints, is somewhat lacking. Mostly just fancy mayos. Where is the innovation? Where is the intrigue? We are Americans, not Belgians. We do not have enough of an affinity for mayonnaise to sustain your menu of "sauces."
The culture snob in me enjoys how you name your crepes and salads after famous artists, but if you name something after Caravaggio, the damned thing better live up to its namesake and the word mediocre cannot linger on the tip of my tongue. Caravaggio deserves better.
Excuse the barrage of bitch-slaps. It's tough love. You can do better, I have faith in you.
eh - I remember it being so much more yummy - I think because the fries weren't as thick...? Or maybe that's just what I was expecting. Anyway, you can't go too wrong with fries and beer.
I like the creamy wasabi mayo dip.
refreshing change from the normal restaurants, known for one thing and one thing only the dipping sauces for your fries they got more then 10 to choose from. mussels are good, good for groups try to sample every sauce
food ***
price $ inexpensive
ambiance *** calico, white and black almost like dalmation colored
I was in the neighborhood and my friend wanted to have fries there. I was actually in the mood of a fattening cheesy burrito. So, I guess I can do crepe. It's just a fancy French burrito.
So it was a nice and chic place, and they named their food after artists. I ordered the Picasso (its weird putting "the" in front of name), which has Gorgonzola cheese, roasted peppers, grilled eggplant, and red onions. It was not bad, blah. My friend ordered a Canaletto, which has goat cheese, fresh tomatoes, shallots, parley and olive oil. They just felt like a lot of crepes, but not a whole lot of fillings.
We also shared the fries. My friend ordered the wasabi mayo, and I had the bacon mayo, since I was in mood of some fattening food. Seriously, ANYTHING taste better with mayo and bacon. I feel like they need go beyond just mixing mayo with something. Perhaps something like an aioli sauce, bernaise sauce, or even teriyaki and hoisan sauce.
I'm on the fence between 2 to 3 stars, but I went for a 3 mostly for the decor.
When I was little I was promised a trip to Disneyland for my birthday. I was so excited. The months prior were like torture. I couldn't wait for what I just knew was going to be the happiest moment of my childhood.
Finally the time came to make the trip. We were even going to stay in the Disneyland hotel! I thought Minnie Mouse actually lived there, which I was just dying to "bump into her" in the elevator or something.
So we drive there. The drive from SF to LA as a 10 year old seemed to take about 3 days. Back then you could ride in the back of a truck. My dad had a camper shell and a mattress back there, so me, and all our luggage hung out for the 3-day trek in the back. When we get to LA my very humorous father tells me if I don't lay down a gangster might see me and shoot me. In these days the news about LA was all drive-bys and Rodney King, so this terrified me. I stayed suctioned as flat as I could, the whole time trembling in fear. I was scared to even get out once we got there. My dad assured me it'd be fine cause we were in Disneyland where nothing bad happens.
Then came the first day at Disneyland. It was hot. The lines took 3 hours. The candy made me sick on the rides. The characters were all so fake and none of them talked. Yeah, I had "fun" but this was NOT what I was expecting. Such a let down. And then to top it off I got food poisoning from the shrimp at the Disneyland hotel.
This trip was so built up in my mind as the happiest time I'd ever have in my life and all I remember about the trip was waiting for hours in blistering heat, getting sun burnt no matter how much sun screen my parents put on me, almost getting shot on the drive there, and vomiting uncontrollably for 24 hours after the trip.
This past weekend I had a similar let down. I had been DYING to go to Frjtz for months. Seeing friends of mine posting glowing reviews, hearing the chatter about the "french fry place", and knowing that a place that specializes in fries (my fave!!) was in MY city.... I couldn't wait to go.
So Saturday night came and my group was not only hungry but also drunk. What better place to go to satisfy your drunken french fry urges right?
WRONG.
The fries were a joke. I swear they use frozen Ore Ida Steak Fries. And the dipping sauces? Gross. Here's some ketchup with ranch sauce mixed in. Or mustard mixed with mayo. I was expecting some top notch dipping sauces but these were haphazardly thrown together and tasted straight from the bottle.
The sandwich? It's served open faced on a thick dry bread with cheese on top that made it hard to grab and eat. The chicken itself was pounded too thin to cut down on cooking time but instead resulted in over cooked, dry, rubbery chicken.
I was SOOOOOO beyond disappointed. Where are the sweet potato fries? Where are the fancy dipping sauces? Where are all the good things everyone else seems to be buzzing about?
I keep wondering if maybe I'm wrong, but no. I couldn't even eat my fries. And that's unheard of for a drunk Ali. I think I had 5 fries total. Every 2 minutes, I'd say, maybe it is good? Nope. Still not good.
They are getting 1 extra star for the mixed greens. They were fresh and tasty.
yuckosville. Bland crepes and smelly bathroom. You are paying (too much) for ambiance. I'd rather burrito myself with that place next door.
What really caught my eye about this place is the ambiance. The place is gorgeous, cozy, and pleasant to look at on the inside. I came around dinner time on a weekday and they were almost dead empty. I came here for the fries and right away had the hardest time picking which kind of dip I wanted. I went with white truffle artichoke ketchup and one called the moroccan something or other. (It's a new flavor they have). My friend got the pesto mayo. My favorite out of all three was the white truffle artichoke. It had a lemon taste to it. The moroccan dip tasted like cocktail sauce and the pesto mayo just tasted like light pesto.
My friend and I also each ordered a salad. She ordered the Warhol and I ordered the Chagall. I could've gone without a salad. The Chagall came with a spicy mustard dressing and boy was it spicy. It had the "shooting up your nose" effect that wasabi gives.
Overall this is a nice place to eat. I will most definitely try the mussels next time.
Great fries with awesome dipping sauces! Yummy vege burgers! Great fresh-squeezed lemonade.
Salad, fries, and a nice glass of wine. What more could a gal ask for on a Monday night. I am thrilled that Frijtz opened up a location on Valencia and within walking distance from my house. Hayes Valley is just a bit too far.
I do wish the salad and wine selection had a little bit more variety, but you cannot go wrong with their fries. Also wish price was a little lower.
Regardless Frijtz is here to stay as one of my favorite, though not frequent, Valencia mid-week eats.
I lo-hove Frjtz. Its all about the truffle oil fries for me. Nothing else. I can easily sit on their lounge couch by the entrance with my large fries, artichoke mayo dip and Stella beer all night without a care in the world. I haven't had the crepes, but a friend had one and loved it. Great place to start off your mission bar hopping on a Friday night.
Oh and I also love their language learning tapes they have in the bathroom. If you go there enough, you might learn another language!
Shatangi likes fries. The sauces are way bland but not a bad concept. Friendly staff but "kitchen" can not accommodate more than 2 orders at a time. NOT good for groups. Same review for the other location (go figure).
Shatangi told you...
It's ok. Frjtz is here for the fries and the beer. I didn't have the beer this time but I did have the fries. Fries are fries unless they are pacific catch sweet potato fries. Otherwise, I'm definitely not impressed. The fries are good and crispy - the way that i like them but not enough to warrant the prices. I suppose the other reason to come here is for the dipping sauces. These are fun to try but I can hardly make that a big enough reason to want to come back here.
Besides, if I want beer, I'm going to Suppenkuche which has the best beer in SF.
Great crepes, OK fries. The fries seem to depend on choosing a good dipping sauce; I got (spicy) Thai Chili at the recommendation of the cashier, but wish I'd gotten something else.
The Canaletto crepe (tomato, goat cheese, olive oil) was amazing, and a bit pricy at $9.50. They have an assortment of other items from mussels, to burgers, to weekend brunch, and I would expect equal quality from them. The place is well-decorated, but it was pretty empty when I went.
Overall, I'd say go for the food, not just the frjtz, as long as you're willing to spend.
I love the food, the decorations, and the bathroom (you'll just have to go). They have great fries and I love the hot sandwiches! I love all the different sauces for the "fritz" especially the strawberry mustard- WOW. Their lattes aren't bad either. And it's hard to beat the atmosphere!
After 6 months of wanting to try their savory crepes, I was a little disappointed. I tried the crepe with the rosemary chicken and swiss cheese. Let's just say that it was dry, and the flavor did not blend well at all. The chicken tasted like boiled chicken with no broth, I saw rosemary leaves in the dish, which turned me off. The cheese, I was expecting to be a little bit more salty, but it was rather sweet, so I wasn't really digging that. I do say, however that it was filling. I also ordered a small fries with the pesto mayo sauce. My stomach got a little upset from that. So never pesto mayo ever again. I don't think I will come here for their crepes, but rather their fries, and stick to something that doesn't contain mayo.

So tasty!
This was the dinner stop on our third day of our culinary tour of San Francisco. We actually found this place on Yelp, and I have to say, thanks, Yelpers!
The two of us split an order of mussels and a large order of fries with the chipotle remoulade (meh) and the white truffle artichoke ketchup (NOM NOM). The mussels were tender and tasty, although the first couple had some grit. The fries were crisp on the outside and very starchy, which worked well with the sauces.
The restaurant itself was very pretty, and I wish I had seen the window seat before we chose a table!. I love black and white print wallpaper and local artwork, and they were two for two! The atmosphere was fun and relaxed, and we would definitely go back if we lived in town, if only for the nutella crepe!
Never been to either location until last night when a friend and I stumbled in for some coffee and a cookie. Yes, no crepes. The latte was tres delicious. And the vibe here was very fancyyy, I guess the all white look gives off that vibe. It almost seemed to hip and fancy given the style and food of the place.
But I am definitely down to come back and try some of those frijtz!!
Okay, the fries are back on track. The previous time must have been a fuke.
Cripsity-crunchity outside and perfectly done centers make this the go-to spot for a savory late nighter with a pint of Hoegaarden.

kinda overrated i think. fries were decent, crepes weren't great - i thought the batter they used (for the savory crepes at least) gave it the wrong taste and texture
only plus point for me is that its self service. so if you're with friends in the mission and want a nice sit down area where you don't have to figure out the bill, fritjz is the answer
I come for the mussels.
I stay for the dipping sauces!
Seriously.
They have over 20 different sauces to dip your fries in!!
I think their real specialty (besides the belgian style fries), are their crepes..but I've never had them.
The mussels are just so tasty I've never wanted to try anything else! The ambiance and decor make it a great place to bring a date or an evening out with friends, I've done both :)
There are plenty of beers on tap..I recommend having a Chimay while you wait for your food!
I've just discovered they have a location in Hayes Valley too!
Can't wait to go!
Although food is supposedly the function a restaurant serves to its customers, I believe that you have to take other factors into account to really be fair in rating one. After all, eating at a restaurant is an experience, not only a way to fill the tank.
That being said, the food (I had the quinoa salad) was okay. Just okay. The fries (frites? Frjtz?) were not bad, but nothing to make me drool-and-dream over. I didn't get food poisoning, or gag, but I also didn't cry out in disbelief after my first bite.
As for the decor, that was worthy of a few stars! You can't really define it beyond "eclectic"--a mix of retro superhero nostalgia, sequins and a clean white French-Victorian vibe.
Probably the coolest feature of this restaurant, however, is the restroom. The voices are not the product of very thin walls, but a recording of language lessons (I think it was some Asian language when I went).
Uhhh . . . really, are you serious? Are they really 'famous' for their french fries and dipping sauces? They kind of taste like Ore-Ida fries. Yes, the fries you get in the freezer section at your supermarket and cook in the oven. Cafeteria fries! I hate to say it, but I've had better fries at fast food chains. I thought maybe the dipping sauces would make the fries taste more extravagant and make up for the lack of flavor, but i thought wrong. Their white truffle artichoke ketchup tasted like it had acetone in it! It really tasted like Sally Hansen's nail polish remover! Their new lemon aioli mayo dip wasn't that bad, but it gave me a stomach ache after a few dippings. To say the least, I was so disappointed, especially with all the hype I've heard. I was also feeling like a fatty and got the ham and cheese sandwich, omg, salt overload! I'm not sure about their other entrees and what not, but I don't really want to find out. This place was a huge let down.
One positive is the decor. It is super chic and urban, very LA. However, instead of sitting in a posh/hip restaurant, hopefully looking uber cool, I'd rather have a delicious meal, no matter the decor. Carls Jr. CrissCut Fries, here I come! Mmm. . . with extra BBQ sauce!
The place is good. They have a unique mix of flavored mayo and ketchups for their famous fries. Tamarind ketchup and pesto mayo is my favorite combination. Sandwiches are good too . Right portion size and fairly fast to get your order (if the place is not too full). The best part of the experience has to be to ambiance. Great decoration (love the big white couch) and good crowd (not too loud). It is a step up in casual eating for sure but not exactly a "nice" dinner place.
I wish I could give them 3 1/2 stars and the reason for not giving them more is because I base my experience on one simple question
- Would I ever come back to this place?
Yes, If I am in the neighborhood. I would not go out of my way to sample their menu. Good, nice but not very memorable.
I'm sorry...aside from the lovely service staff at the counter and the delish pinot grigio I had three glasses of, this place just doesn't compare to the OLD Hayes Valley Frjtz. I know it's not fair to compare, but come on: this isn't apples and oranges. It's a chain now, for god's sake. Let's try for a little consistency, people.
First, it's cold and sterile. Second, it's all white. I feel like I'm going to soil something (and not my pants). Third, the Basque language-learning cd's playing in the bathroom made it really hard for me to concentrate on the matter at hand (TMI, I know...). It's like the Freaking Clockwork Orange in there.
But there is a big, cushy couch area that you can lounge on and eat off of trays on (we did not do this but I may on my next visit). The fries are still standard and they still have spicy peanut yogurt sauce. Three. Fricking. Stars. I eat that stuff with my fingers and forget all about the fries.
Just go, get some pinot grigio, order three containers of peanut yogurt goodness, and get your freak on. Just steer clear of the bathroom. Unless you want to learn to say, "who is that colleague" in basque.
I ate here for the first time at the Valencia location, and was pretty impressed. The Fritz burger is definitely a winner, though I probably wouldn't do the Iowa (Bacon cheddar) again. The fries were very good, and the new bacon mayo and lemon saffron aioli are real winners!
I'll be back to try the crepes and salads.
I love fries. I love crepes. I love being able to order fries and crepes at the same time at Frjtz.
I don't love the prices, but the food (esp. the Pesto Mayo sauce) is delicious.
Their frjtz aren't that bad, but they aren't the best out there. i'll be on the lookout for other belgian fries. they serve 'em wrapped up in a tall sundae type glass with various dipping sauces to choose from. I even tried their chicken, tomato, pesto and mozarella crepe - the crepe was a big square filled with a generous amount of chicken which was wow; however in my opinion, even though there were that many ingredients I didn't think the chicken was seasoned well--it was pretty bland. I still haven't found a crepe place in the city that beats Crepes a Go Go.
You order your food at the counter and they give you a number. They bring the food to your table. They'll give you a carafe of water if you want, but you get your own cups, napkins, ketchup and mayo at the counter.
Friendly customer service.
I really, really wanted to like this place. I mean, fries and mussels, what's not to like? I ordered the Pompeii mussels and the mussels had no flavor at all! The sauce all the way on the bottom of the bowl was excellent, but no way to get to it with all those dry mussels in the way!
The fries are some of the best we've ever had. However, what kind of a Belgian fry place doesn't have regular aioli? That was the most requested sauce when we traveled through Europe, so they should look into adding that to their long list of sauces!
In short, go for the fries, skip the mussels.
Stop #2 on our foodcrawl? Pommes Frites from Frjtz!
Stop, wasabi. Stop, white trash ranch. Seriously yummy.
We were thoroughly happy.
Yeah White Truffle Artichoke Ketchup!!
Yeah Lemon Saffron Moroccan Aoili
Yeah lots of Belgin sauteed mussels.
Yeah crepes at 10pm
Yeah fresh salads
Yeah meal under $3
Yeah lots of fuckin garlic fries drizzled in parsley and chunks of garlic (ahhemm.. i didn't have a date that night)
But, where the fuck is the bacon??????
The art is a bit modern for the joint but, it's kinda art deco-ish, I guess. We thought the skateboards with mother of pearl on the bottom was neat...
This is a solid place if it is kind of late, and you are starving, and you want some fancy-ish bar food between drinking establishments. Its also the place you should go if you enjoy trying to pronounce restaurant titles that don't contain any vowels...frjtz...I think I've sneezed that word before.
The crepes were OK, and the fries were pretty solid. A+ on having some beer and wine available for us that can't stand to be without for more than 5 minutes. I liked the selection of crepes, but wish there was a better way to present the menu to make it a little more manageable. The price kind of snuck up on me, but it still wasn't too bad - $20 for a beer, savory crepe, and a small fry.
The interior has a club-ish vibe, which is kind of interesting. I enjoyed it, but I can see how this may stand out in this 'hood as too trendy or hipster. I can also see how it would probably look dirty during the day.
All in all, a good find for a 9:30PM dinner where you can sit down, have a beer, but still get food brought out speedily. I'll go back when I hit this situation again.
