ive been kinda on a cheap food binge so this place definitely hit the spot. the place feels kinda sterile but at the same time dirty, and the ladies making the dumplings look like they want to kill themselves, but this place is definitely a serviceable joint.

the pot stickers were actually larger than i thought they were going to be. while the filling is a bit lacking, i cant complain because of the price. such a good deal, even in chinatown. as for the sauces, one is a vinegar-y soy sauce and one tastes like a diluted sriacha.

no english is spoken here, so chinese was used. i didn't try anything else here, but maybe the pork buns will be next.

This little nook of an eatery is awesome! Talk about cheap eats, this place takes the cake, not to mention the dumplings are good!

It's also true that the people that work there don't speak a lick of english. I wanted to try the soy juice but couldn't seem to get an explanation of what it was for from the owner.

Regardless, this is a freaking fantastic place.

Hard to Not Like 20 Cent Dumplings.

Fu Zhou Re Ban Xiao Shi's dumplings are still king, but Lao Shandong (the Chinese name for this joint) is much more conveniently located.

The skins are too thick for my liking here and the homemade dumpling sauce isn't as good as Fu Zhou's.

If you like your dumplings at home, you can buy 30 for $5 here.

I miss you so much. I would take the train from New Haven just to purchase the $5 frozen bag of thirty of you. Seriously.

And while I'm at it, I'd get five of you fresh, from that curt woman who cooks you, and I'd walk down to the park to eat you after dousing you in soy/hot sauce.

Chinatown hole-in-the-wall with a small counter and 4 seats.

$1 = 5 meat dumplings (mad watered down hot sauce and soy sauce provided)

***Old ladies try to RIP YOU OFF the first time if you're TOO NICE or TOURISTY, but just remind them of the huge menu that reflects their prices.

"Hi, can I please have 5 dumplings?"

-"Two dolla"

"But the sign says one dollar for five..."

-"Okay okay" *sigh*

Today I was talked into coming here instead of the nearby Tasty Dumplings. Yes, it is 25 cents cheaper, but so much is lost!

The dumplings are sad and stuck together and not juicy and delicious. They rip when you try to pull them apart - and nothing gushes out! I mean, that's just not a good sign. In addition, as soon as we walk in the door the lady behind the counter starts pointing to us and saying "$2 you! $2 you!" to which you then have to counter, "no, only one please."
It's sad and dark and full of sad alone people eating sad alone lunches. I've been told there are some sort of pork bun things that occasionally grace this shop with a ray of sunshine, but that they are fleeting and fickle. Today they were not slated to make an appearance.

I finished this lunch full, true, and I had still only spent $2 ($1 for 5 dumplings, $1 for a bottle of water...oh the extravagance!) but I just didn't have that happy greasy satisfied feeling that Tasty Dumplings always leaves me with. I think I've reached a point in my life where I can sacrifice 25 cents for quality. I mean, what else am I spending all this time in the cubicle for?

The name of this place is simply stated on the window: "FRIED DUMPLING." It's pretty much all that you can get there, in addition to a pancake, which is just a sheet of dough.
This old school Dumpling bar does not have a swanky, overated interior design or theme. Dumplings go for 5 for $1. So when you order, you just tell them how many "dollars" you are willing to shell out, and that's how much you get. They are very generous with the size of their dumplings.

There is a small bar against the wall where approximately 6 people can sit and eat their order. I usually sauce up my dumplings ans walk down to the park nearby and eat there.

The prices are pretty much on par with most of these little hole in the wall dumpling houses. I am a loyal Dumpling House patron because of their sesame pancakes, but ever since they revamped the quality of the dumplings has gone down.

I was introduced to Fried Dumpling today and I'm glad to report that their dumplings are a bit better. The good news: the skin is nice and chewy, and the filling doesn't clump like a dry martian meatball but falls apart slightly like it's supposed to. The bad? Perhaps that there's not enough filling and the dumplings stick to each other too much and completely fall apart if you try to separate them.

But for $1, I'd drop in for a visit if I were in the area. You could definitely do worse for dumplings.

Can't really complain about the cheap fried dumplings, but truth be told that they are really inconsistent with the dumplings.  Sometimes the are really cripsy & offer a nice bite, sometimes they package some limp barely fried treasures.  I would probably prefer to buy their frozen and pan fry - pot sticker style on my own for better quality, but I still support them when i want some dumplings along with that congee and stir fried noodle dishes on that sunday morning - afternoon takeout!  I prefer the joint on eldridge st. but mosco is much more convenient.

God I love this place.  I love the fact that it is the epitome of a hole in the wall.  I love how the Sriracha sauce is watered down by half, how the entire place is smaller than some people's (read: assholes') kitchens.  I love how the owner, a gruff lady who cooks the dumplings and who has been behind the counter every single one of the hundreds of times I've been here, no matter the hour, barks to take your order in Shanghainese and Mandarin-- I understand one of those, but she clearly doesn't mind that her white customers likely understand neither, because she'll speak to them in a sharp amalgam of English, Shanghainese and Mandarin anyway.  I love how she mutters to her comparatively-quiet coworkers, sometimes comments about the customers, who are busy putting together fresh dumplings right beside her.

The dumplings are great, fresh and handmade, perfectly crisp and the inside juicy and perfectly seasoned, and all way better than Tasty Dumpling's around the corner.  Comparable steamed pork buns can be found all over Flushing, but they're good here nonetheless.  Surprisingly, the hot and sour soup was delicious, and I've found myself indulging my craving for it on hot summer days (note: this place has no air conditioning, and does have tons of food sizzling away over a giant fire just a few feet away...).  A huge deliciousness factor is in the fact that anything you are served is always just cooked and piping hot, actually.  Who wants lukewarm food?

Catch this place between 2pm and 5pm on a weekday and it'll be filled with high school kids-- but part of the draw is that seating is so spare and the food is so fast that the place fills up, and empties out, quickly.

This is one of the places I miss most while away at school.

I love the Shanghainese woman who is the owner here! She is so sweet and I love her Mandarin. Very sharp and wonderful to listen to.

Anyhoos, how can one go wrong with 5 fried dumplings for a dollar! My mom gets 10 dollars worth at times so that her wonderful kids wouldn't have to trek to Chinatown to get these delicious dumplings!

There isn't much seating and the condiments are kind of shady (at least to me) but after 5 delicious fried dumplins, you're ready to take on the day!

Fried Dumpling has always been my tiny rest stop in between arcade sessions at Chinatown Fair. As many people have said before me, it's 5 dumplings or 4 small pork buns for a dollar. To me, that's perfect since an entire meal for me would probably come out to 2 or 3 dollars.

Lately, I find that they have been skimping on the dumplings. This is probably just because of the slump in the economy as a whole. Really, you can't blame them. How far do you expect your single dollar to go nowadays? Anyway, they've always been skimping on the Sriracha and soy sauce. They're watered down a lot, but it's a good thing that the dumplings don't need to much of either in the first place.

I always come here whenever I don't know where to go to eat in Chinatown. It's quick and a bargain. Also, if you ever want to make your own dumplings, then you can easily buy a bag of 30 for about 5 dollars. Since they're homemade, you can be sure that they taste better than any frozen version you find in an Asian supermarket too.

I am SOOOO lucky there is not one if these places in Portland.  I love potstickers/dumplings and this place does it up great.  The 5 for a $1 price can't be beat in my opinion.  The dough is perfect.  They're perfectly cooked.

Buy some and eat them in the park that is nearby.

First, let me say that I'm a BIG FAN of Fried Dumpling on Allen St. I've gone there several times, and have never been disappointed. So when I found this place smack-dab in C-Town, I was soooo happy since I hang around this area pretty often.

Went there today, and was hugely disappointed :( While we were waiting in line, the lady behind the counter pretty much yelled at everyone she was serving for diff. reasons. We ordered 1 order of dumplings and a large soy milk, she kept yelling at me "$2.50! $2.50!!" while thrusting her hand at me... it's like dude, the money's right here, just hold on for a freaking sec! Keep in mind, there was only like 1 other person behind me... so it's not like it was busy.

After I handed her the money, she shoved me the dumplings and soy milk. Look... I don't expect first class treatment or anything. I'm used to going to Chinese restaurants with rude waiters and they don't bother me at all, but this lady... VICIOUS! She then proceeded to yell at the people behind me for not speaking Chinese or something... I heard them say "Let's get the hell out of here before we got yelled at again"

So now the food:
-Dumplings- soggy. Not at all like the ones on Allen St. The inside was allrite, but they look pretty pathetic...
-Soy Milk- more like water... I could taste a hint of soy, but it was reallyyyy watered down, unlike the one on Allen St. (sooo delicious there! I drink like a gallon everytime I go there)

Me- sad and disappointed :(
I wanted to like this place so much... I really do, but meh, I'd rather walk all the way to Allen to satisfy my dumplings craving, rather than coming back to this place to get yelled at by that lady. Maybe next time I'll peek in to see if it's another person and give this place another try... MAYBE.

Lao Shandong is pretty good. Its quality can be inconsistent, but when they're good, they're really good. Buy a container of warm soy milk to go with your fried dumplings. Tasty and cheap. Speak Mandarin Chinese for less hassle. Compare to Zhu Ji Dumpling Stall in Flushing, Queens, which I think is better. In fact, for non-Cantonese Chinese food, Flushing usually beats Chinatown these days.

The Chinese equivalent of the Dollar Menu at McDonald's, Fried Dumpling serves dumplings all the time.  For price, nothing can really compare with a buck buying a set of either 5 pot stickers or 4 pork buns.  I was there and they were making the next batch fresh.  An item to note, there is no seating!  Expect to stand and eat.  Condiments include your choice of sirachi sauce or soy sauce.  What do you expect for a buck?  A plate, a fork and a quick bite.  This is an niche place and can potentially be hit or miss.  Most times, though, it's a hit!

Expect curt service and non-English!

5 dumplings for a DOLLAR!!!  What more do you need to know?  Yes, it LITERALLY is a hole in the wall and yes, there isn't much seating, so a group is out of the question.  SO what?  Did I mention the 5 for $1?

Their dumplings are crispy, juicy and full of flavor.  Damn right, it's good eating for LOW cash.  I've gotta give them love because I've had some bad dumplings in the area.  Apparently, it's QUITE easy to fuck up dumplings.  The place is aptly named for what they do best.  Word.

If this was the only place around that you could get 5 dumplings for $1, I'd probably say it's great, but there are several places with that deal, and this is the worst that I've tried.

Their dumplings are the thinnest I've had in the city, and the little meat that they did put in didn't taste very fresh. The texture was more chewy than crispy.

Also, I don't expect smiley, customer-is-always-right service in Chinatown, but the lady here was just a pain in the ass. I asked for a serving of dumplings--it says dumplings $1 all over the place. I handed her the bill and she said, "Two dollars." I pointed out that it says $1 on the menu and the window and we went back in forth for a minute before she rolled her eyes, took two dumplings out of my package, took my dollar and waved me out of the place. I have no idea why she wanted to give me 7 for $2 when that's nowhere on the menu, but maybe she thought I'd just pay it anyway?

Anyway, Tasty Dumpling around the corner and every place on Eldridge is better tasting and friendlier, so don't ever go here.

A tiny hole in the wall spot for scrumptious dumplings, 5 for $1.

Pick up two dollars worth of dumplings (on which you put hot sauce and their special soy sauce blend), a $1 hot-and-sour soup, and for the authentic experience, a $1 bowl of hot soy milk to drink, then go to the park and eat lunch with the Chinese grandmothers and their grandkids on a bench at the playground.

Or sit at the counter and watch the old Chinese ladies make the dumplings from scratch all day.

Or pick up a bag of the just-made dumplings and bring them home for a late-night snack.  You really can't go wrong.

This place is related to the one on Allen St. at Delancey, which has a slightly larger menu.  There are many similar places in the depths of Chinatown that are also good, but this is my personal favorite.

This place is close to court and cheap, and it satisfies my frequent pork cravings.

They don't like to give change, at least not coins, so they tend to throw in an extra dumpling as opposed to give you a quarter back for your 75 cent coke and $2 of dumplings.

I do sort of wish that the vinegar-y sauce they have was a little more flavorful, since sometimes the dumplings could use a bit of tang.

Beware that $2-3 dollars worth of dumplings will make you feel full at lunch time, and then by 3:30 you may find yourself spending $3 on a chocolate bar at the salad bar next to your office.

One of these days I'm going to try taking home the frozen dumplings.

5/$1.  If you need to know anything else, you're going to be disappointed.  They're just as hit and miss as every other cheap dumpling place, but when they're on (and they usually are) they're exactly what you want when you're looking at places that sell dumplings for change.

This is a wonderful little place. I first discovered it during my teen years when I used to go to Chinatown Fair and play video games. After a long bout of Puzzle Fighter or DDR, you mosey on down to the dumpling ladies for a cheap and satisfying meal, then go next door to the Thai grocery for some mango juice to wash it all down.

It's on a shady side street that leads to the park and if you aren't paying attention you could walk right by. I usually order $3 worth and go and eat them in the park.

If you are broke and want a really tasty and fulfilling lunch come here. For five dumplings for $1, the only way you can go wrong is to not eat here.

DUMPLINGS THAT REDEFINED MY UNIVERSE...

$1 for 5 delicious, pan-fried dumplings?  Who says New York is expensive?  Actually this bargain makes everything else seem expensive by comparison.   After my first visit here I found myself comparing all my other purchases that day to its equivalent in dumplings.   $6 for Pinkberry?  That's 30 dumplings!   $30 for a polo at Uniqlo?  That's 150 dumplings?  Is that worth it?  Maybe these dumplings could become our new currency since the dollar is so out of favor.

This is the most authentic little dumpling shop in Chinatown. The place looks as if it could exist in 1907 the same way it does in 2007.

Everything is made on the spot, with a giant table covered in flour and dough and 2 little grandmas kneading away. Five pork dumplings for $1. Four pork buns for $1. Soy milk, Hot and Sour Soup, and a few other traditional items exist on a short and sweet menu.

For $4, I walked away with 15 dumplings, a container of soy milk, and the biggest goofiest grin on my face. There is no reason to ever be hungry in this city.

A Wednesday haiku for Fried Dumpling:

Five for one dollar
Yes, open on Thanksgiving
How do I love thee?

***please click on the little FUNNY button because that's damn hilarious***

Fried Dumpling pretty much saved my arse because I had absolutely nothing to bring to Thanksgiving dinner. The dumpling place on Allen Street was closed. So was the one on Eldridge Street. So was the one on Mulberry Street. But thank god for this little shack on that little street, where you make a right by Hop Kee.

***Please click on the little USEFUL button for that little bit of info***

You can order 30 dumplings for $5.00 but you have to cook them yourself. Or get the usual 5 dumplings for $1.00.  I can't wait to go here for Christmas, yeeeeeeeeah boooooooy!

***Now please click on the little COOL button because you've already clicked the other two so why not go three for three***

Not the best in NY but the better of the two on this block.

I tried the two dumpling places near Mulberry & Mosco recently. This place was better than the Tasty Dumpling around the corner on Mulberry but in general the dumplings are smaller, colder, and greasier than the Eldridge places.

Fried Dumpling has a very focused menu - just a couple dumplings and some things like soy milk. The location gives off a pleasant out-of-way dinning experience as it is on a small side street and is just a small hole-in-the-wall of a place.

For a snack in this neighborhood I am starting to eye the guy who sells meat-a-stick just across the street at Mosco @ Mott.

2 stars cause NY has show me much better dumpling experiences. I think I am getting jaded.

When I used to have to run errands in Chinatown a couple times a week, this was my go-to place for cheap eats, since it was perfect for a student budget and watching the ladies make the dumplings is a great way to spend a half an hour.

Recently, I bought a fancy-schmancy rice cooker and on the same day it arrived, I was in Chinatown, so I thought I might as well buy some dumplings to take it for its first steaming spin.

Oh sweet happiness!  Not only does my rice cooker steam them in a half an hour, but they are SO DARN GOOD!  Delicious filling and perfect skins.

And this is why my freezer is never without a bag of the Fried Dumpling's dumplings.

If you're walking through Chinatown on a cold day during the winter, this place is your best friend. Why wear gloves when you could get something to warm your hands *and* your stomach, without giving you too much of a hit on the wallet?

Straight out of the styrofoam container, these things come out piping hot (burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth-hot), so it's good to just hold onto the box for a few minutes while they cool down a bit. Thanks to the frying method, the skin is crispy and delicious; the filling of pork and chives is well balanced and very tasty as well. The whole package is a bit greasy, but hey, they come advertised as fried, waddya want?

Really, though, all you need to know (as it's been mentioned numerous times) is that the dumplings are five for $1.

Great deal for yummy dumplings.  I think it's 5 dumplings for $1?  I am sort of a glutton and I can be full with $3 worth.  A little oily, but the flavoring is really good, strong and flavorful.  Adding a little vinegar makes it even better but they can totally stand alone.
Supposedly the soy milk and hot and sour soup is alright too, though I haven't tried them myself.
I don't really know how people who don't speak Mandarin here manage, since i don't think the staff speak any English at all, but I see a lot of non-Chinese people come here so they must figure out something.
