16 reviews for Frida's
It was pretty good. Actually my entree was really good, but I didn't like the chips and salsa much or the margarita, so that evens it out to a pretty good place.
Our waiter was excellent and the atmosphere is nice.
Frida's is a happy little upscale Mexican spot new to the Southport Corridor with a lovely patio outside, ceiling-to-floor windows that open up to the street, and a dark interior space larger than one would expect...I imagine this place would be pretty loud if it filled up for dinner.
Now, if you know me at all, you might be thinking to yourself, "What were you DOING there, Katie?" You would think this because EVERY Mexican meal I've eaten in the last 3 years has succeeded in making me ill (use your imaginations). Well, I'm happy--err, sort of--to report that enjoying lunch/brunch at Frida's didn't make me ill. Why not, you ask?
Because it was bland and a half! I ordered the enchiladas verde with chicken, it having been explained by our delightful waiter that the green sauce was spicier than red. So bring on the spice, right? Wrong. Sure, it was slightly stung the tip of my tongue, but that was it. The enchiladas didn't taste like anything. Nada. The rice and beans that came with the enchiladas didn't offer much flavor, either. Big ol' sad face. On the other hand, the sangria our party imbibed was delish (on the strong side with cinnamon-y green apples in the mix) and the guac was fresh.
I'm willing to consider that maybe I just ordered the wrong dish, and that many of their other Mexican standards will cause excitement to rise up in my palate and allow my stomach to stay settled while doing so....but maybe not. We'll see.
This is a much needed addition to the Southport corridor. We have been without a Mexican and Italian restaurant for a LONG time- and recently both have been added!
As for Frida's- First off the ambiance is nice. I liked the colors and the setup. It's a fairly large space for Southport.
The waitstaff was OK. Our waitress was sort of hard to find when we first got there. One friend waited at least 5 minutes for the waitress to get her drink order while the other 2 of us were sipping away on our margaritas.
Prices- I felt the prices were pretty much in line with any other place on Southport. The drinks weren't cheap though. I had a frozen margarita and I've gotten a larger serving for less money at other well established Mexican restaurants in the city. And I know it's stupid, but the margaritas weren't served in margarita glasses. They came in regular old glasses. The glass/ presentation is half the fun! The ceviche was an appetizer I was really eyeballing (and might return for as a carry out item) and I swear it was more than $10 but I could be totally wrong. So don't quote me.
The food was good. Not as good as Mayan Palace or Fernando's... but it was good. I'd return even though I found a hair in my food. A big long hair. EW. But if I return maybe just margaritas, guac and salsa with chips- less chance of hair in my food. I didn't have the heart to tell our waitress but it was gross!
I got the skirt steak (Carne asada) which was really good. Good flavor and they gave me a lot to eat. The steak itself was large. I got refried beans rice, guac, green onions and they even gave me tortillas if I wanted to cut up my steak and make a fajita out of the meal. But the steak was so flavorful I really didn't need to do that.
All in all it was good. I might not return for food after the hair experience but I'd go back for drinks- provided they keep the hair out of my cocktail.
We went to Frida's to celebrate a college graduation. I had never been there before and I wanted to bring a special bottle of wine. I called and was told that they had a full bar but that for a $6 charge I could bring my special bottle. That's very fair.
The food was very good. Chicken and Mole, just spicy enough and the chicken pretty moist. Tilapia, very fresh, prepared with light batter and served hot. Prices were again very fair.
Service? One waitress (Lucy) and while she was quite busy she was always attentive, smiling and very pleasant.
We had a great time and I would go back.
Tostadas de Tinga with shredded chicken were fantastic. Big fan of the red sangria. Service was slow...only one waiter for the whole restaurant.
I was very disappointed in Frida's. It is super cute and looks like it would have such potential. Our waitress was beyond sweet, but the food left much to be desired.
The margaritas were way too sweet and syrupy. Not a fan, and I LOVE margs. The guac didn't have very much flavor. I know it's mashed avocado, but put some salt, some lime and a little jalapeno in there! All of the entrees were bad. The mole sauce on my chicken was nasty, and the chicken was way overcooked - the dish was inedible, so I ended picking at my husband's Bomba Frida (which was also not very good).
I suppose we will probably try it again since we live so close. Then again, maybe not.
I came here last Saturday night and there wasn't a wait, which was a plus. The restaurant was busy and people appeared to be enjoying their meals.
The salsa for our chips was ok...it was kind of like spicy tomato paste. My boyfriend had the beef enchiladas which were a bit gristly. I had a chicken dish with chopped peanuts and a spicy sauce. I don't remember what it was called. It came with 3 small tortillas, rice and black beans. It was good but I've never had a Mexican dish like this. The margaritas were good, but the drink itself was too salty.
Our waitress was very nice and attentive.
The menu also said to "check back next week for their full bar".
I feel this place has potential, but they opened before they were ready. I do like having a sit-down Mexican restaurant nearby!
MY 100TH REVIEW! YAY!
Frida's has excellent margaritas and great service -- that's why it gets 3 stars from me. They have a fantastic location on Southport and that being said, they really need to step up their game food wise or they're not going to be there for long.
I know it's their first 2 weeks in business and they are expanding their menu every week for the first 5 weeks -- but why not just open when you are ready? The tamale I had was very dry and I had the worst ceviche of my life there -- it was like shrimp swimming in tomato juice -- warm tomato juice at that.
The chips and salsa were pretty good though -- and like I said, the margaritas were great.
Despite the sub par food I would still return in a month or so to check it out again once they get their sea legs. :)
not really impressed with this place. I was really excited to see that they were opening up another location on Southport, especially since there are no other mexican spots near it, but my everything about Frida was just average. Food, drinks, service...I have had better.
I will give it another try once they are more established and have a bigger menu.
Solid food, decent atmosphere, overall decent. It isn't going to blow you away, but it didn't disappoint either.
Have you ever finished a restaurant meal and wondered to yourself, "why would anyone bother operating such a dump?" If you haven't, then head over to Frida's on Southport for the experience of a lifetime. If sitting under klieg lights while sipping weak margaritas sounds like fun then Frida's is your kind of joint.
Interestingly, one would be willing to forgive the horrible decor if the food was noteworthy, but it isn't. The guacamole is desperately bland. I ordered the Carne Asada and would not have minded that it was the toughest skirt steak I've ever encountered, if it was at least seasoned. But like everything else on the menu it was bland as can be.
Arthur Miller was right, "Attention must be paid!" In a town which features some of the finest Mexican cuisine to be found north of the Rio Grande, I cannot imagine why the owners would open a Mexican restaurant only to ignore the food and ambiance.
I was looking forward to trying this restaurant, but I must say it was a less than average experience. I cannot give an accurate rating or review for the entrees, but I can review the chips/salsa, guac and a picther of sangria. Ok, Ok, and Ok. I really wasn't impressed by any of it. Not to mention, there was no one to greet us when we walked in the door. We ended up walking back towards the kitchen and asking if we could sit down. Our bill was what shocked me the most - $36 for a picher of sangria, chips/salsa and guac. A rip off.
Sadly this first time experience at Frida's was not so great. My friend and I had to walk back near the kitchen to get the wait staff's attention to see if we could be seated. We ordered a pitcher of sangria and guacamole. The pitcher of sangria was 85% ice, and was something I could make at home. There was no punch, nothing special about it that left me wanting more. The guacamole was good, but we had to flag down the waiter for more chips even after he passed our table several times and noticed we were out. I could understand if it was busy....but it was not, and when chips and guacamole are the only thing we are eating, they are sort of important. Dishes that others were eating looked and smelled delicious, so I would be willing to go back and see what other menu options they had to offer.
I was pleasantly surprised by Frida's. The food was very good - we had enchiladas and chile rellenos - and both dishes very pretty flavorful. The service was excellent. I'll definitely be back.
I really wanted this to be a 4-star restaurant. I gave them 2 stars for good service last Friday. Their margaritas were a little to syrupy sweet for me. The carne asada was a tough cooked through piece of beef jerky. The guac was pretty good and my husbands enchilladas were just OK. Plus their AC was broken during this heat wave. However, I will try it 1 more time and see if it improves since it just opened.
I dined at Frida's last night with friends for dinner and have to say I was very impressed. All three of us tried something different, and nearly licked our plates clean, it was so delicious. We started with complementary chips and salsa (which gave them my first star), and the guac we ordered was outstanding. One of the best guac's I've had in awhile (two stars). The service was good--not great--and the lighting was pretty dim (- one star). However, our main entrees more than made up for their shortcomings. I think this is a place that lets their food speak for itself. I had a peanut-chili chicken dish and my mouth is watering just thinking about it. My friends had the chili relleno and tortas (Week 1 & Week 2 menus) and loved theirs as well. We did not try dessert or margaritas/sangria but I will definitely be back for more so I can because they both looked delish on other diner's tables. Oh, and although it was chilly last night, there IS a small patio and I can imagine it would be a great people watching location. Overall, a great new SoPo gem!
