These are great sandwiches!  Get there around 11 or 11:30am for hot sourdough bread!  Freshly sliced meats (not the traditional pre-cuts like other places).  Sandwiches are around the $6 dollar price.  The only downfall is make sure you bring cash.

I FINALLY made it out here for lunch! Although it was sandwiched between two buildings, it was easy to find thanks to the satellite feature on Google maps. [Have you TRIED that yet? It's awesome! A little unnerving though.] I literally got a panoramic view of the location and the surrounding buildings.

You Yelpers weren't joking about the speed of service. You literally tell the guy what you want, and once it's your turn to pay, your sandwich is done. I ordered the #5 Classic- Roast beef, Ham, and Turkey w/ American cheese to go. For $6.50, it's a deal... it's HUGE. [Check out the pics I posted.] I don't know what other reviewers are complaining about... Quiznos and Togos charge *almost* the same amount! It's true... it's all about the BREAD here... because I found the meat and fillers to be just okay... but the fresh bread... wow. That seriously made the sandwich. [On a side note: This bread doesn't have a strong sourdough taste to it.] I could only finish one half of the sandwich and saved the other half for later. I re-heated the bread in the toaster oven... and VOILA! Just like new... well not really... but CLOSE! Almost as delicious as the first time.

Try this place at least once... and if it's not your cup of tea, oh well... MORE BREAD FOR ME! =]

These yelpers were right on the dot.  Awesome deli.  The place is tucked between a church and an office building up for lease.  The only way i spotted the place were the umbrellas for outdoor seating (came here for lunch).  It's a small joint but boy does this place make some quick sammies. I ordered the peppered turkey.  The turkey was great, the fixins like lettuce, tomato, cheese, mustard were perfect, and the bread was terrific.  So terrific that the person making my sammie gave me a fresh warm one right from the oven (they bake their own bread +++). mmmmmm.   I wasn't able to finish the other half so I took it back to the office.  It's a nice change of scenery here since the outdoor seating faces St. James' Park.  I'm coming back here fo'sho.

The BEST friggin' sandwiches in San Jose!

When me and my boyfriend started dating, we went out for lunch...the rest is history! I've been hooked ever since. FRESH bread (hence the name Freshly Baked), yummy meat and a really nice staff. i recommend the #1. I usually get turkey, mustard, lettuce, tomato and pickles. Mmmm mmmm!

My definite go-to spot for a simple, healthy lunch.

The line can be really long at lunchtime, but getting a sandwich with that warm, crusty, straight-from-the-oven bread is so worth it!  The meats are good quality, but the highlight is definitely getting your sandwich with freshly baked bread.  It puts a great big smile on my face just thinking about it!  Yummy!  The shop is inside of an office building, so it's easy to miss.  Just look for the tables and umbrellas outside.

The yelpers are smoking crack. Seriously, this is the best place for sandwiches in San Jose? If it is, I feel sorry for San Jose residents b/c they are deprived of good sandwiches. I went here today for lunch and was simply dumbfounded when I got my sandwich. The bread was ok but by no means sourdough, meat does seem like it came out of some package and that pathetic shredded lettuce seem to bode of a subway nightmare. The only side offered with the sandwich was a pickle, which was disappointing when you're used to getting a real side dish. It's also cash only and kind of hard to find. Very limited outside seating and only street parking. Inside was reminiscent of Midwestern donut shop circa 1988. You also don't know how much your drink costs cuz there are no prices posted. I guess I will end on a positive and say that service was friendly and speedy and the sandwiches came out quick.

If only I still worked in Downtown San Jose!  Glen and Victoria just push out consistently good sandwiches day after day.  (Glen is very friendly.  Victoria can be all-business, but hey, she has to be.  She runs register and needs to keep that line moving.)

It's probably already been mentioned, but this is the child of The Sourdough Eatery and both make crave-able sandwiches (aaaw jeez, now I need a sandwich!).

Fresh baked sourdough bread, warm and right out of the oven.   Meats are smoked in-house and thinly sliced for a tender bite.  Their house spread?  Slather it on, I don't care about the waistline today!

The sandwiches are huge, but I'm always amazed that I finish it.  It may be the only thing I eat that day, but I'm not going to let that bread get cold.  #5 - The Classic!

(Just can't wait till tax season is over and DH returns to me for our regular daily lunch-out routine!)

I hate to be a buzz kill and I love a great sandwich as much as the next guy, but while I thought the sandwich was good, it was not great by any means.

Yes....the bread is very, very good. I mean you could put a piece of shoe leather in between two pieces of that Sourdough and it would taste good.

But the one thing that didn't do it for me was the turkey.....it was very processed looking. But they say that they BBQ all of their own meats...but this was the type of turkey your mom would buy at Lucky's for $1.99 pre packaged.

I also got some salami on it and "the works" and that was solid.

But I'm sorry, it was hard for me to get past the look of that turkey.

The people that worked their were very nice and the atmosphere was good for a downtown San Jose crowd.

I'll keep trying until I find that sandwich that rivals "Scotty's Market" in San Rafael. That is what a sandwich is all about.

I tried this place for lunch today since my sister (Vanessa B; yes I am embarrassed she is my sister but she recommends good places to eat) recommended it. It was fabulous. The bread was fresh and the sandwich is huge. And, they served a pickle on the side (unlike Mr. Pickles; go figure). I will definitely come back here again.

Fresh baked bread right out of the oven

Sliced open and filled with decent deli goodies of your choice.

Parking is a pain due to the need to input coins into the meter on the street.

It's like Lee sandwiches America Style!

We found this place by accident but was really happy to because they have freshest bread in town!  I've never been to a place where they put too much meat into the sandwichs but I'm not complaining.  You can def get really full for only $6.50!

Some of the freshest bread I've ever tasted. Perfect combo with fresh ingredients... I couldn't stop eating it! *dreams of sandwich... and drools* It's so cheap too, for such a GINORMOUS sandwich. Definitely have to eat it fresh, because the awesomeness of the bread fades fast!

Located/Hidden between two large buildings, this place is very easily passable if you weren't really looking for it.

The sandwiches are great.  For $6.50, its even better!

The bread is always fresh and the texture of it is just unbelievable!  Forget Subway, Quznos, etc. This is what you call fresh!

The menu is simple and to the point.  I tried the Roast beef in addition to horseradish and ate there.  Everything from the bread to the meat was great, I needed a little more horseradish though.

I also had the garlic herb turkey to go.  Eating to go kind of ruins everything because the bread isnt so warm anymore and it loses some of the texture.  The garlic herb "crust" doesn't go deep into the turkey, so in the middle you taste mostly turkey.

My coworker loved his sandwich and rated it 4/5.

Get in line, tell them what you want, and in less than 2 minutes you're out the door!

Food:
My favorite sandwich is the ole #9.  Ham and turkey baby!  Great rottiserie meats and the freshest, tastiest bread you will ever eat.  I have never eaten any other sandwich here but my friends all order different ones and they love them as much as I love the #9.  They keep a nice assortment of chips on hand with a cooler filled with every imaginable beverage.  This is a healthy eating spot as well.  Dieters should feel comfortable here along with the big eaters.

Service:
I was introduced to Glen and his wife (Owners) about 9 years ago from a work friend.  I have religiously eaten there ever since.  They are two of the nicest, hardest working people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.  They are the true example of how a Mom and Pop business should be run.   As it states in my profile, I am a bit of a germ-o-fobe and this place just rocks.  Extremly clean and lots of effort into keeping all of the food fresh.

Summary:
For the best selection of sandwiches in San Jose there is no other choice.  The Fresh Baked Eatery is #1 in my book.  You can eat inside or outdoors.  GO THERE, you won't regret it.

Wow definitely a highly recommended place! It's a somewhat of a tricky location to find. But when you first walk into the Deli the guys over the counter would show off their hot steaming bread and takes your order. When I was the building was under some renovations, but they are still open during the time of it. There were some seats open in the Deli for some indoor seating and there is also more seating outside.

The sandwiches prices are normally at $6.50 each. I had gotten the first choice for Turkey sandwich. And by far this is one of the better sandwich places I eaten yet. No one will beat their freshly baked breads.

Though, I'm pretty disappointed that they only opened a short time, but this is by far the best place for sandwiches in the area! 5 Stars!~

WOW! I really mean it.. WOW!

I wasn't sure of visiting this place earlier, as the menu had primarily meat choices. But Aniket D's review prompted me to visit here.

Upon entering, there was a little line. When we got to the counter, we weren't sure of eating there, after looking at all the meat around. At the same time, someone behind the counter, just cut open a fresh loaf of bread, and showed it to us, steaming from inside :) We gave in.

We asked for the Veggie, which is Cheese + Red Pepper + Onion + Tomatoes + Lettuce + Mustard + Mayo

I've never liked Mustard, but I must say, it tasted excellent. The whole combination was just too good. And to top it all, fresh bread, with a slight crunch on the crust

The interior is nice and cozy. The Building is under construction

Veggie lovers, don't hesitate. Go here, and maybe close your eyes until you get to the counter (If you don't like the sight of raw meat). Once you get your sandwich, let the aroma and the flavor do the talking. You probably need to open your eyes to not stumble onto anyone ;)

3.5 stars rounded up.

Yummy bread, it was still steaming when they sliced it to make my sandwich. The bread has a nice crust but it's not too crunchy. My gums are intact, yay!

Boring filling - I had pastrami with everything except onion. I wouldn't get that again. Maybe another filling has more flavor? The cheese was also boring.

Picky Chris had a pastrami and lettuce sandwich and he added extra yellow mustard to it. He claimed to like it but it looked even more boringer (yes I realize that isn't a word but you know what I mean) than my sandwich. He's a bread person though..

Boyfriend had a salami sandwich and thought there was too much meat in it.

Good meat to cheese ratio and excellent filling to bread ratio. There was never too much or too little of one thing...though the sandwich was pretty big so overall I couldn't finish it.

Great value. $6.50 for a huge sandwich and a pickle. Bottled drinks are pricey - save money and get it to go.

Excellent, smart, friendly, and efficient staff. Great service!

Parked on the street and used quarters for the meter. Thanks for the warnings Yelpers!

Cash only. How quaint.

This is one of my favorite sandwich shops. I can't enjoy it as much anymore though because I've moved out of the neighborhood.  Also, it doesn't help that their closed on the weekends too! When I use to come here with the bf, we'd order the garlic herb turkey and roast beef sandwiches. Both came on warm sourdough bread. Yum! Just thinking about it is making me hungry.

The place is somewhat difficult to find though b/c it's hidden within buildings. It's actually inside a company building too. This place gets really packed so be sure to come before the lunch rush at 12 or a little later around 1:30. But if I remember correctly, they close about 2pm .

You've got to be kidding!!! I was visiting San Jose and went out of my way to check out this highly rated place. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT. The only difference from Subway is the bread is better and the people are friendlier. Other than that same iceburg lettuce, tomatos, meat, etc. If this is the best San Jose has to offer I'm avoiding it like the plague. I was so let down my opinion of the town is forever tainted!

God, I love this place.  It's my "underground" sandwich spot.  Mainly because if somebody doesn't tell you about it, you won't find it yourself.  When I was offered my current job downtown, I actually thought of this place as incentive to work here.  I even considered not writing this review (because I want to keep it underground) but then again, I also want to keep them in business!

A totally awesome, simple, deli with the BEST fresh bread.  Meat, cheese, sauce, basic (fresh) condiments.  I never have to inspect the lettuce (you know what I mean. For the starting to decompose brown slimey crap).  And the sandwiches are HUGE.  I have made it a habit to give the other half to (a lucky) somebody so I don't eat the whole thing like pig.  Because if I have it - I WILL eat it.

And, they're really fast.  The line can be out the door (okay, that probably still is only 5-8 people in line! This place is small) but they are superquick sandwich slangers.  I get orders for my work of 6 sandwiches and if there's a small line, I'm out of there in 5 minutes.

The only thing that sucks (for me) is that it's cash only.  But I always have my ATM card..... And they aren't open on weekends.

What a deal - about 6 bucks for a huge ass sammich? Yes please.  The staff is friendly but have no patience for those who don't want what they want - so, do your homework first before stepping to the counter.  I like that they're straight to the point here, I can always appreciate that in any food joint, the less pretentious, the better.

Their homemade bread is made perfectly - crusty on the outside and warm and pillowy inside.  Their meats are choice too, freshly sliced and prepared.  Their "special" is tasty, the sausages are one of a kind.  I've had their peppered turkey, salami, proscuitto, ham, and so far, no complaints.

Street parking is available.  They close at 2:30, so make your way there as soon as you're available for lunch, the place gets packed yo!

For those who thought their sandwiches were bland or boring,  you didn't get the turkey sandwich. The turkey rocks my world. It's amazing with each bite. I don't know why, but man, it rocks! The bread is crusty, but soft and there's some dressing on the sandwich that makes it a little piece of heaven. I tried the roast beef but it was bland and boring. Turkey only!

Very similar to Sourdough Eatery: just cash, strict ordering rules, a bit pricey but the sandwiches are very good. They may be pricey but for the size of the sandwich you're getting your money's worth. And unlike, Sourdough Eatery, they are more warm and welcoming - in my opinion.

This place is great, a lot of people talk about it so one day I said why the heck not! It took me a little bit to find the place since its kind of hidden behind a few trees and a building. But the hunt was worth it, the food was great! The bread was very warm, so you knew it was fresh, and the place itself felt like a cozy kitchen.

I wouldn't have been able to find this place on my own without a few little hints from previous reviews.

It's ridiculous how well-known this place is, and how dedicated their regulars are. Huge groups of people roll in the minute it opens. Their sandiwiches are simple (turkey, roast beef, pastrami, etc.) but it's the bread that makes this place SO AWESOME! It is truly freshly baked (you can even watch it being made when entering) and made consistently perfect all throughout.

The service is freakishly quick. The sandwich literally pops outta nowhere! The portions are also reallllllly huge, which makes up for their slightly steep prices (all sandwiches are $6.50). Overall, this place truly met all my expectations. Thanks god it's walking distance from SJSU! I will be returning very soon =)

This place is next to St. James Park at the bottom of a business building....when you are in the mood for a sandwich on warm, tasty, fresh baked bread...this is your place! Screw Togo's, Quizno's, Subway or all those other sandwich joints!  The bread is freshly baked as the title of their establishment states.

Negatives - cash only!  I assume this is because the line is super long at lunch and it helps them speed up service.  You only can order from the sandwich choices and they do not allow substitutions.

The sandwiches are pricier but hey...it's worth it to me.

To hell with Subway, Togo's, Quiznos, Panera, and any other chain sandwich place you can think of. This place is the shizzzzzzz. Huge sandwiches ( half of their sandwiches is like one whole sandwich to me) with hot, FRESH french bread ( crispy on the outside, yet impressively soft on the inside), meat that they cook themselves, and crisp veggies. I haven't tried anything but the simple turkey sandwich,  but even that is marvelous. I never knew what fresh turkey was until I ate here. You can truly taste the difference.  I usually like my sandwiches plain- just meat and cheese- but something about thier sandwiches tickles me in all the right places. Blah that they're only open until 230, and blah that it's only open on the weekdays- yet not enough to take away a star. Beware it's one way street parking, and the restaurant is enclosed inside another business building. Also beware that it's cash only, but there is an ATM machine located inside. Mmmm gimme some of that bread right now!

The Fresh Baked Eatery is a wonderful little sandwich shop that is nestled inside a corporate building. It is located on 3rd St. in between St. John and St. James. You can park outside where the parking meters line the streets. If you plan to run in, order and go, 15 minutes is more than enough time. If you plan to eat there, I suggest an hour (depending on how slow you eat).

You walk in, someone takes your order, you pay and your sandwich appears (magically) within minutes. The bread is baked fresh daily and is ABSOLUTELY delicious (sourdough). Although the fillers are average, the bread is what makes it amazing. When I started eating there a year ago, it was $6.50/ sandwich, but the last few times I've been in, the prices went up... I just can't remember what the costs are now.

The owner is a nice guy who appreciates his regulars. Everyone there is friendly and quick with service. You can eat outside or inside or you can just take it to go!

It's a quaint little spot if you work in the area. Sometimes my cravings for their yummy bread is so overwhelming, I make the 17 mile drive from Cuperfino JUST to get the sandwich... hmmm, yum!

Old country (turkey and ham) is good ... and the roast beef is delicious too... I think I've also had the pastrami, herb turkey and turkey, but I prefer the first 2- 3 I listed.

YUM!!

this is my favorite lunch spot when i was working downtown. Though the prices have gone up (when i first went there it was 6.00) it's still worth it in my opinion.
Love the fresh sourdough bread, and they do roast their meat there. If you come early enough you can see it done.
So what i love about the place great sandwhiches, quick service, and still cheaper then alot of the other options.

Fresh Baked makes excellent sandwiches. The bread is amazingly delicious, and the fixings are good and well proportioned. The menu is simple but offers variety. This is the best deli in the downtown area, as shown by its popularity despite its slightly-out-of-the-way location.

This place is tucked into the mezzanine of a nondescript older office building across the street from St. James Park. I prefer the outdoor seating, but it fills up at peak lunch times. Try going at 11:30 or 12:30 instead of 12:00 for better luck. Otherwise, try your luck on the park grounds...

I have always been satisfied with lunch here, and it is one of the few sandwich shops (the other being Zanotto's) where I don't feel the need to order chips to have a full lunch. However, be aware that Fresh Baked is not cheap. Sandwiches were $6 when I first started coming here, and now they run for something like $7. Ouch!

BEST SANDWICHES IN CALIFORNIA. I won't write anything more than that simply because there really isn' a need to. If you enjoy sandwiches, come here. I like the sandwiches so much, I would have them cater my wedding. I'm serious as a heart attack.

Anybody that rates this place less than a 4 is high off their kite. Let's just get this out of the way.

Common criticisms:

"It is cash only": JEEZ, WHAT DID THIS WORLD DO BEFORE CREDIT CARD MACHINES? Seriously, if you don't carry cash then have fun eating at all the corporate restaurants.

"It's always busy": Maybe cause the food is so good? Maybe they should just hire 10 people making sandwiches and only make 25 cents a sandwich so you can get your sandwich 4 minutes faster?

"The sandwiches are a little pricy": They use premium meats and bake the bread fresh at the shop. Can you get that combination at Subway, Quizno's, Togo's, or even any other sandwich shop around here? Don't worry, I'll wait for an answer...

Bottom line: this is a small family run restaurant. They focus on a lunch crowd because most people will only eat sandwiches for lunch. They make their money when they need to and don't have to work long hours. If I were running this business, I would do it the exact same way.

Thank you Freshly Baked, for keeping things simple and real.

$6.50/sandwich may be pricy, BUT
***You pay more for the specially freshly baked bread and premium meats and cheeses.***

Newer review:
They hired more people, so the sandwiches may not be made the same way.  I noticed that the sandwich that I got had way less meat and it was more losely packed (yes, it sounds weird, but when you eat your sandwich, you see the cross section of it).  The bread is still good, but I'm deducting a star because it seems more commercial and expensive now.  It's $1.50 for a can of soda!  Although I agree w/everyone on here that this place is pricy, but I guess you get what you pay for.   Service is more warm and friendly compared to Soughdough eatery and the atmosphere is nicer.

I'd be careful with those peppers, sometimes it's foul smelling and very limp.

Thank you to my fellow Yelpers for recommending this place.  Everyone's praise is right to the tee.  This is one of those places that makes me glad to have spent the long seemingly-pointless hours (excluding Freshly Baked Eatery) reviewing restaurants and reading reviews.

Oh #7 was delish!  Freshly baked bread, just like their name was fit to the tee.  Soft plush, perfectly toasted.  Line was nonexistent and short, higher than my ideal price on a sandwich, but most sandwiches from togos or quiznos are around the same price anyways.  I wolfed down every last morsel.
