I walked into this place after the St Patty's parade this year...yeah I was pretty drunk so you can just imagine my confusion when I placed my order for a shrimp burrito with the very nice Asian lady behind the counter. I then noticed the slew of other Asian guys in the kitchen grilling a whole bunch of really delicious-looking chicken breasts. I almost changed my mind and ordered the chicken burrito but I was so glad I didn't when I finally stuffed my face with one of the best burritos I've ever had. Really, shrimp? Yes. Really. Now remember, I was pretty drunk, so you can take this with a grain of salt but I ate the whole massive roll in about 2.5 minutes and of all the festivities that occured that day, that was one of the only things I actually remembered.
I'll be sure to write a proper review once I eat there sober.
As most have mentioned in previous reviews, this is a Mexican place that is owned/operated by Asian folks. This is not so strange to me, being a New Yorker (there are plenty of these in neighborhoods in Queens and the like). I had a shrimp burrito which was actually really good and WAY bigger than I would have expected for the price. They deliver for free (or maybe for a dollar...I can't quite remember) and will bring you your food until after 1am on weekends. That's some good stuff when you have a late-night-drunken-craving for Mexican.
PS...Try their hot sauce. Yum.
Chinese Mexican, hahahahaha. Wait, I don't get why that's so funny. Or relevant to the food. I thought fusion cuisine was supposed to be "in".
Truth is I don't really care who makes my tacos, as long as they taste good. The soft tacos at Fresh Tortillas are tasty and filling, something akin to a "homemade" version of Taco Bell: meat, cheese, non-nutrient rich veggies, they're a cheap alternative to the sub-par pizza places that seem to be a dime a dozen in South Boston. And while the tacos certainly pass muster, the real winner here is the torta. Avocado, queso, meat, lettuce, and tomatoes layered on a crusty roll, I don't care if it's authentic, it is G-O-O-D. Notice I didn't say great, this is no Tacos Lupita, but hey, a girl can't always drive to Somerville when she gets a torta craving. And for the times when you're in the neighborhood and you REALLY can't drive (over imbibing + car = bad idea dummy), Fresh Tortillas stays open late on Friday and Saturday. Who doesn't like waking up with salsa on their face?
PS, ask them for some hot sauce, their version is scrumptious, and a needed perk up for their other wise bland chicken.
Okay it gets three stars cuz there are no burrito places in southie near me...
HOWEVER.. the meat to rice ratio is lacking... Got a chicken and steak burrito that was mostly rice. With TWO meats you'd think thered be more. Other than that it did the trick but wasnt spectacular. Works in a pinch but ill be heading over the bridge to El Triunfo from now on
This is my go to place when returning from a night of drinking. The service is excellent, the food hits the spot, and the owner (Tony) is the best. I have been a loyal customer for 3+ years and he has gone as far as opening the restuarant back up when I arrived late one night to cook for me. As the name alludes to, the tortillas are fresh and and perfectly warm when you get them. I tend to go for the soft shell steak tacos but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
Fresh Tortillas deserves 5 stars as it's the most authentic-tasting mexican style food I've had in Boston. Their flour tortillas were warm soft, and tasted homeade - a rarity in Boston. Store bought tortillas tend to taste differently than homeade ones, and there is no match for a homeade tortilla with some melted butter or other toppings. The rest of my soft taco had onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and cheese - all prepared exactly how I remember it being done in Southern California (where by the way, there is a population of asian hispanics). The lettuce and onions were crisp, the tomatoes fresh. If you have a hankering for mexican food, I recommend giving this place a try.
Suffice it to say, the menu is suffering from an identity crisis.
Out of sheer amazement, we ordered the following, and everything was bad. Malo. Chinese-symbol-for-"gross."
-chicken fingers
-chicken wings
-fries
-quesadilla
-tacos
-crab rangoons
I guess Lee Chen is chinese for Spanglish?

I always want to come here after drinking, yet it's such a bad idea. I always get a stomachache.. However, they are convenient, right in the center of Southie..
YUM!!
Got takeout from here the other day. The tortillas were soft, warm, and tasty. The rice was flavorful. The tortilla chips were freakin crispy and yummy. The steak! tender and perfectly seasoned.
will not be the last time I hit this up.
I miss this place so much!! I've never had chinese mexican food and while its not the best mexican food, its friggin awesome for last minute delivery. When i lived in dorchester we would get FT at least one per week. They were really inexpensive and you get what you paid for basically.
I did like the guacamole and we were huge fans of the nachos and alawys got crab rangoons with out... mexican!!? Yep.
I recommend it but please by all means dont expect top quality. I loved it though.
If you have ever wondered what Mexican food make by Chinese cooks tastes like, this is where you'd find out. Open late, counter-order service place that is just asking for all the drunk people to come in and order food at 2am. That's exactly what I did too.
This is by no means a gourmet restaurant....far from it. But I have to give it 4 stars because it's exactly what you would expect. Quick service, tasty food and fairly inexpensive. (I should give fair warning that it's possible that I found the food to be tastier than it actually is, but still....it definitely hit the spot.)
I keep asking myself, how did Lee Chen's Taqueria come to be? Was Salsa's (around the corner) there first, or did they think they were cornering the market when this place decided to be a Mexican restaurant.
The food was fine. I ordered nachos for take out, and by the time I got to eating them, they could have been GROSS; but they weren't. Still crispy, covered in cheese (a feat by itself). The guacamole was alright. The order was taken care of in 5 minutes. So I can't complain, but I can't really condone this place either.
Beats Taco Bell though!
Lee Chen's is awesome. Never had the stomach probs as mentioned above. Only good tacos. This place is not *authentic* but it's awesome. BTW they make the tortillas fresh and there is not a spanish/mexican/latin restaurant in the greater Boston area that does that. This is not gourmet. It's simple food: meat, cheese, lettuce, tortilla. Done. Plus it's cheap and close.
Well, I went here sober and wile it was still light out, which could very well explain why I'm only give it 3 stars and the other reviewer gave it 4. But, it was decent. We wanted something quick but also different from your basic slice of pizza or sandwich so we decided to give it a shot.
I had soft corn chicken tacos & my boyfriend had beef. They were nothing to write home about but they were good. Not greasy, which is a big plus. The chicken was not shredded though as you'd find in most Mexican restaurants. It was cubed. Tacos came with shredded cheese & lettuce and a side of salsa. We also shared chips & guacamole. My expectations were not high and I was pleasantly surprised by the guacamole. The chips were only okay - not the warm kind you get at a Mexican restaurant.
Service was fast. You order at the counter. The food was inexpensive. This is definitely not an "Oh my God, you have to try it!" kind of place but it's worth a stop if you're in the area and want to try something new. And, you won't be too full so you'll still have room for popcorn when you go see "Blades of Glory' after.
This is a fantastic taco on the go place. i too have never had any stomach pains from this place. Perhaps its the mix of alcohol in your stomach being mixed with taco goodness that is upsetting you. But as always i digress...fast cheap and delicious. what more can you ask for from a taco burrito place in south boston, run by asians, Its a must go to. my only wish would be that they stayed open a little later on friday nights. Much love to the fresh torilla
Eh so so Mexican. It kind of weird when you walk in. It is a former Chinese fast food restaurant turned into Mexican but still has the Chinese people working in it. So a Cine's take out place with an identity crisis. It was a little trippy when I went in after a night of drinking. The food is ok (still in search of a great Taco Truck in Boston).
We call this the Chinese Mexican place. The food is just plain bad. Even when I'm completely hammered I still find the food gross - and that's saying a lot. The low quality of nearly all of the dishes here just doesn't cut it . The meat is prepared for the Mexican cuisine Chinese style, like you would find in a plate of beef & broccoli or say chicken and snow pea pods - only it's chewy as hell and flavorless. The people working there are nice enough and food is cheap so I do feel kinda bad slamming this place, but hey it is really, really lousy.
so its not the BEST restaurant in southie, Its a chinese/mexican fast food joint.
The burritos and nachos are good. the delivery is exceptionally fast and the customer service is always pleasent.
I am sitting here reading the negative reviews of this place, feeling a bit puzzled. The only solid complaints I can spot are that the crab rangoons and chicken wings are bad. ? Is it any surprise that a burrito joint makes less than superb crab rangoons? Lets say you ordered a slice of pizza from a sushi restaurant, or a steak from a donut shop, how good do you think it would be? As a connoisseur of burritos, I can tell you that these are fine, very good actually. If you want better quality food, sure you can go to Salsa's. If you want mexican food delivered fast, order from here. If you want crab rangoons, order from a freaking chinese food reaurant!!!
This is not an authentic Mexican food place. And I'm ok with that. I don't even know what authentic Mexican food should taste like. I'm not Mexican. I'm mostly Irish. I've never been to Mexico, and I don't care if this place is less authentic than Taco Bell. Authenticity is not to be confused with quality. The burritos are awesome. Fully loaded with rice and veggies and pretty cheap given the size. The crab rangoons are delicious, not sure why others don't like them, I think they're rad. Steak tacos you say? One time I ordered 20. And I didn't even like the concept of steak tacos at the time. But I sure did afterward. They used flank steak/london broil and it was cooked to perfection. And for anyone who questions the cleanliness/food poisonoing potential, you can see the entire operation from the seating area/counter. One time I was in there and needed to use the boy's room, they directed me behind the counter, down to a back stairwell to a restroom in the basement. I saw the whole operation up close and personal and there was absolutely nothing to make me reconsider eating their wonderful chinese tacos. In fact it was really really clean and well kept. Also, delivery is super fast as others have said. I lived about 5 miles away, would call at all hours on Friday nights, and the food would show up in 25 minutes guaranteed every time. The delivery guy was funny too.
Inexpensive, healthy, and Fresh. The mixed vegatable burrito I had was the best I've ever eaten. Some places see mixed vegatables as the lettuce, tomato, and onion that would come on any other burrito, but Fresh Tortillas sent it over packed with broccoli, mushrooms, peas, and celery. And all cooked perfectly. Hell yes!
