When the news of eye glasses was introduced into my life back in 2008, while living in another state, ahem, taxachusetts, I chose to return to NY for my first pair of frames. My first pair of frames was a pink pair of pro-design's. They were sleek, kind of cool, looking pink frames with pink and white, alternating on the legs. Unfortunately, I lost the beloved pink pair in a evil Macy's day sale, as with the name that this yelp account is named for. I was on a search for a 2nd pair knowing the price can't be beat at other eye places, but the location wasn't ideal for me.
During the first round of frame searching in 2008- my thought was to compare the opthamologist's from my then health care provider to French opticians. (btw, this is a new location- less than a month old and I am loving it!!! it's less crazed than the main k-town drag.) I found that my eye doctor was honest, concerned and asked me questions I didn't think were important when it came to eye glass shopping. I brought my previous prescription in from my out-of-state provider which the dr was happy to explain. We talked about options for contacts, which doesn't make much sense for my "dosage" ... sigh.... :(
Up to date, I've ordered 2 pairs from French Opticians. 1 Pink pro design frames and 2 gucci black frames both for EXTREMELY reasonable costs (20-30-40% off the cost of frames). Try comparing that to a boutique eye doctor shop and compare the value AND customer service. I am loving the new frames. Tailored for me. What I love the most about this place is that I walked in without an appointment and was out in less than 45 minutes with a new, brand spanking new pair of glasses aiding with my sight. All of the counter persons and owner (older gentleman) speak English, which I emphasize as a huge plus, considering its the 32nd street k-town area. They'll take a respectable deposit if one cannot pay full. I believe they take select vision insurance- do ask. They're nice and knowledgeable. I don't hope to be back anytime soon, but these will be my go-to-people. ;)
I've got a weird predilection for eye examinations.
"Number one. Or number two. Or about the same."
The phrase, softly muttered over and over, becomes a mantra. So, though it's called an "exam", I think of it more akin to a brain massage.
Anyways, fetishes aside, French Optical Fashion was fantastic. I found the place through Yelp by choosing the closest optometrist to my work so I could come during lunch, and it was a harmonious coincidence.
The exams, to begin, are a phenomenal value. $50 for a contact lens exam? I doubt you'll find any cheaper unless the place also doubles as a tatoo parlour.
And, for that price, there is absolutely no compromise in quality. The interior is spacious, clean, and refined. The equipment seems modern (don't hold me to this, I seemed to have misplaced my optometry catalogue), and the service was welcoming.
I should mention that French Optical falls with K-town borders, and, not betrying it's location, it is indeed operated by Koreans. However, the counter girls and dudes all speak English, and the actual optometrist doesn't even have the slightest hint of an accent, so it's not like you'll be fighting through any language barriers.
The optometrist was extremely thorough, not only telling HOW I should be taking care of my contacts, but WHY I should go through the motions of doing so, not through scare tactics, but rather, detailed explanations of the what exactly is happening to my eyes. Her talk might make me feel guilty enough not to wear my contacts for the entire day (eeeh...big "might").
I'm not sure what the prices run for frames, but the contacts were a few bucks more than I would pay by having my parents pick them up at Costco ($27 vs. $35 a box). But as a testament to how great of an experience I had at French Optical Fashion, I'll be going back next week to buy from them to show my support, and I would highly recommend anyone who needs an exam to follow suit.
I actually had an eye appointment at the place across the street (European Optical), but I wanted to dip in here first just to see what selection they had on the frames. As I was looking around, I saw that the optician and optometrist were talking with a non-Korean, FedEx delivery man. I thought he was delivering something at first, but I realized that he was actually a customer and that they were helping him with an order. It was refreshing to see that a merchant located in Korea Town had employees who were fluent in both Korean and Engrish and kept their manner professional with all customers, regardless of race. And I know that we're supposed to be in a post-racial modern society, but that is so much easier said on TV than done in reality.
I have VSP vision policy through my company and although French Optical is not in my healthcare provider's network, they were still able to get a $140 rebate for my eye exam, frames, and lenses. After rebate, the total transaction was $270. A bit pricey but I have some thickass lenses and I also purchased Gucci frames. You get what you pay for I guess. The exam was great and the optometrist actually found that my left eye was not as weak as I once thought. This was most likely a mistake made by previous optometrists and something she was able to pick up on. My new frames look and feel great and the vision is perfect. Everyone was helpful along the way and it was a pretty seamless process. I'll probably come back here again to get future eye work taken care of.
Awesome, $50 for a contact exam (promotion, usually $75 but cmon) and the optometrist is the nicest, and most thorough around. I got tester contacts (the monthly kind), and they were not offended when I told them I would be ordering them offline because I can get them for 30 bucks a box, whereas they could order them for $60. If you need an eye exam I would recommend no one else. It's exactly the same caliber as every one I've gotten at lenscrafters in the past, only 100 bucks cheaper!!!
Not often does googling "cheap xxxx" yield good results, but this proved an exception. Contact exam was indeed inexpensive, staff was great and very friendly (even after I admitted I had neither had an exam for eight years nor taken my contacts out in eight months!), appointments easy to come by, and I was never left waiting.
Highly recommended for the uninsured, and likely for the insured as well.
So I'm in the City with my cousin from upstate NY who hadn't had her eyes checked in ages. After a short yelp consult and talk thread search I found a handful of options and started calling around. This place sounded like the most affordable.
They charge only $30 for a regular eye exam! If you wear contact lenses your eye exam is gonna cost you $50! To put this into perspective for you so that you may understand what a steal this is.... A Costco eye exam is $60!
This seemed like a family run business and the staff were all knowledgeable, friendly and professional. The doctor took her time and gave my cousin a thorough examination and a free trial pair of contacts.
If you live in the City and need eye care and don't want to pay out the wazoo.... go here!
When I can't stand how much my ophthalmologist charges me for contact lenses and glasses, I come here. For basic eye exams, my friend recommends them as well, but if you have eye issues, stick with an ophthalmologist.
Their selection of contact lenses are very good, be they regular prescriptions or colour contacts. They carry all the predominant brands (Acuvue, Bausch & Lomb, Fresh Look, etc.), and they also provide a great kit with contact case and a generous bottle (sometimes two or three) of contact lense solution. However, they do not stock a wide range of prescription lenses, especially for colour contacts, and ordering can take up to a week for delivery.
Their assortment of frames are also impressive for a small mom and pop shop. They have a lot of high end frames (except Oliver Peoples, but they do have Prada, Gucci, Chanel, etc.), as well as frames from Korea, which are excellent when you need a little more bridge support. They have very quick turnaround time for fitting your lenses, and if you have great negotiation skills, you can usually haggle a bit on the final price.
This is a great place to stop for lenses and glasses when you don't want to pay an arm and a leg, even for the branded stuff. Since my insurance for eyecare has always been crap, I'm not sure what they accept. However, they do take FSA cards, so be sure to consider that when you're signing up for your annual benefits and need a new pair of fashionable glasses!
$30 is an amazing price for an eye exam. Appointments are easy to set up and it was surprisingly thorough. She explained a lot to me and since I didn't know my previous prescription she had me come back with my glasses to make sure my new prescription wasn't uncomfortable different. They also have a good selection of high end glasses and sunglasses. This is a great option when you need a really basic exam and/or updated prescription.
I walked in today without an appointment. Was seen on the spot. The sales girl and the doctor (DR. PARK) were seriously the nicest people. I live on the UWS and as most of you know this area is really pricey. I was looking for something less expensive even if the service was going to be crap. To my surprise, it was inexpensive and a pleasant experience. I highly recommend Dr. Park because she was so informative. I have an irritated eye and instead of trying to just charge me and take my prescription she said to come back when my irritation is gone so that the exam results are more accurate! I was really surprised by her honesty and concern.
She's 75 bucks... and she's a sweetie.
Hope this helps!
