Review from Tom S.
The drive up 422 and winding toward French Creek went faster than I expected. Soon enough, we found ourselves parked near a lake and walking along a surrounding trail with our picnic basket. The lake was alive with seasoned-looking small boats and canoes, filled with folks celebrating the Memorial Day weekend.
We sat at a picnic table by the water to enjoy a far-too-large meal courtesy of the tremendous Wegman's in Phoenixville. After a moment to digest we wandered slowly around the lake, along sometimes muddy trails with terrific views of the water.
Our walk took more than an hour at a leisurely pace. Satisfied, we prepared to exit the park but stopped for a map before we left. As it turns out, our walk covered a tiny section of the park. If the park were a pizza, the lake we circled is merely the size of a french fry.
So much more to explore! I can't wait to go back. -

We came here on a vacation from July 19-23rd. Although it was the hottest summer on record for the area, it was all-in-all a great trip. Our campground spot was D-25 and it was far away from everyone else. We were tucked behind the driveway for our campsite and had complete privacy. We also met a new raccoon friend, and quickly remembered not to leave food outside the tent. No one bothered us and we were very close to many of the breweries we had planned to visit. I would stay there again in an instant (as long as the temps were below 80 degrees!

We took a somewhat disappointing hike through the park over the weekend. French Creek is OK if you're just looking for a walk in the woods, but if you're craving a little more challenging terrain or some scenic views you'll have to go elsewhere. Also, the trails can be poorly marked, and the map is not very useful.
There's a nice lake with boat rentals available, but I would go someplace closer to home if I wanted to test my sea legs. -

This was one of the larger parks thats closer to harrisburg, located in berks county, not that far from reading, pa. it really is beqautiful, there is a large lake there, one evening we just sat there at the bench and watched the geese fly by. there is a grist mill and some historical buildings.
There were enormous amounts of deer here, the park is very large, and just going to the office, i noticed that there were literally dozens of deer sitting ina field, eating from a grove of apple trees. 68 acre Hopewell lake will keep you occupied if you like sailing, boating or fishing, the park itself is 7500 acres. Has Yurts, cabins, tents and primitive back woods camping.Listed in: Pennsylvania State Parks

This may ultimately get elevated to five stars.. stay tuned...
Took the dog on yet another hike in yet another PA state park (where we may have broken yet another off-leash rule... boyfriend is much more of a rebel than I am, much to our dog's delight. Also saw a few leash-less dogs running around near the water and doing some swimming, so blind-eye-turning may be pretty standard here).
Dan R.'s review is right on: this park is enormous -- hence the opening for future edits to elevate the star level. We explored one of the trails that sort of crosses the road and meanders down around the dam/levee area (where there's a bit of stagnant water so note to selves: next time, bring mosquito repellent). We didn't see any deer, but the promise of seeing a few will definitely bring us back.
Also, there are literally miles and miles of trail to explore. I think the stats I saw were 40 miles of trail, 7,339 acres of land. All of that land makes for varied experiences and views. We passed regular old tent campgrounds, cabin campgrounds, lake access (and what looked like boat rentals), picnic tables, and some kind of historic furnace/smithing/ironworks thing. Other than the water (and the mosquitos.. gah!) there weren't any major "highlights" per se.. but it was beautiful in the sort of general deciduous-woods-and-trails way. I look forward to returning. Armed with mosquito repellent. -

The campgrounds are pretty crappy, there was an abnormal amount of bugs everywhere for mid-July. Large Group sites are meant for 30 people, but the bathrooms were holes in the ground that smelled really bad down wind. The gravel roads are not fun either.
There are two lakes, that are kinda cool. I heard the pool is nice, but it cost $7 to get in.
I think I'll be going camping elsewhere next time -

The park is very nice but the campground sucks. The showers were freezing cold. The tent site was rock hard. And there were way too many children running around.

You can camp here all year! We like loop D because there are no RVs! Great place to camp with the kids.

Nice hiking....definitely need bug spray but I didn't have to pick any ticks off the dogs. I let the dogs off leash and they had a blast. I ran into very few people and so far its my favorite hiking spot in this area. I need to do a lot more hiking here and nab a park map so that I know where I'm going next time.
