Deep fried french toast...... AH-Mazing!!

My new favorite random little breakfast place in the Bay. Great prices, great food and pretty good service.

I have one complaint...

WHY IS THIS PLACE NOT BY THE WATER?
Imagine having a breakfast as good as Fred's right next to water, looking at the Bay, SF, Alcatraz and the Bay Bridge...

Damn!!! All the breakfast places by water serve crappy foods!!!

This is the stop when I am Sausalito for a real good brunch.
But there are times I want the view, then I go to the Bridgeway Cafe. Crappy food, mediocre service, but that place got view. Fred's got nothing.

Oh wait. If Fred's was by water, there probably would be a line for people to wait and have breakfast....

OMG. I think I  found my favorite breakfast place to date.  We were on our way to Biketoberfest  in Fairfax  and my fiance knows I've never really been to Sausalito. Actually, I've ridden my bike through it, but never actually dined or anything there.  Anyways, he suggested breakfast and I went on Yelp and found two options. I asked him to chose and he went with Fred's Coffee Shop and I'm so glad he did!

There are a couple tables outside under heatlamps and since I LOVE patio dining, that was a given!  We were seated immediately by a friendly lady.

Coffee was perfect! Little on the strong but not too strong and definitely not weak! Just the way I like my coffee!! I ordered the egg white scramble with mushrooms and spinach. I then added onions. It came with a salsa and a generous bowl of my favorite fruit (orange, grapes, cantelope, banana, honeydew, kiwi). my meal looked and was so scrumptious I couldn't wait to dig in so I forgot to take a picture! LOL    My df ordered full order bacon, eggs and deep fried french toast. I took a couple bites of that french toast and it was heavenly. Everything was deliciously heavenly! Service was fantastic. I can't wait to go back!!!

Fred's is merely a destination. And, it is all about location, location, location. Average food, mediocre diner coffee, good service, parking.
It's a fun place to bring out of towners...because it is unique.

We had an excellent brunch here on Sunday. There something about the corner greasy spoon diner that just always sounds good, and Fred's definitely did not disappoint. The service was fast and efficient and the food was great. Everyone must try the famous french toast at least once! It was so good. My husband avocado omelette was fresh and fluffy. The 20 minute wait was well worth it and I can't wait to enjoy another Sunday breakfast at Fred's!

Forget all those touristy places near the center of town.  All the locals know that the best places to eat are just a hop skip jump away down the road.   We were on a bike ride to Tiburon last weekend and decided to stop by Fred's Coffee Shop for brunch after finding the Lighthouse to be full.

Fred's is just what you would expect from a small town diner.  It's cozy, friendly, and the food is good and plentiful.  I highly recommend the deep fried french toast which is so highly touted on the menu.  Although not technically deep fried (I saw them fry it on the grill while waiting in line for the bathroom), it sure felt like it.  It was covered in batter than cooked until a brown crust formed all over.  It was different than any other french toast I've had and it's not for the faint of heart.  It tasted great slathered in butter and syrup.  The portions were huge.  I had the two piece french toast with sausages and could barely move afterwards.  All 4 of us who ordered the french toast were pretty pleased.

I also got to try hubby's burger.  It was an okay burger.  Hand formed and not frozen patty but good burgers abound these days.

Though it's not worth going all the way over to Sausalito for breakfast or brunch, it's definitely worth a stop by if you're in the area.

Ok, I give 4 Stars for the food and 3 for the overall experience. The table where we were seated was wobbly but clean, however my bf accidently tipped a cup of coffee on a woman who was sitting with us at the table and I partially blame that on the very wobbly table as my glass of orange juice nearly toppled over too. Oh yes, they sit everyone together if the table is big enough... I didn't like that.  Now for the service, it was very crappy... no one seemed happy to be there but maybe because they were busy?? I have no clue..  Waitress didn't seem to care if we choked on the food or not.  I may come back when it's not busy and give it another shot.

A local hangout for everyone in Sausalito, much less Marin.

Easy for the kids, a good cup of coffee, french toast, pancakes, and eggs. Sometimes you are just too tired to fix it all for the family, do your self a favor and slide into Fred's

Damn, had breakfast here today, on our way home from staying in SF for the weekend. All I can say is damn, that breakfast was good. Nice little place, with some seating outside. Tables on the inside usually sit 8 people, so you'll probably end up sitting with someone, pick nick style. That was kinda cool, cause it actually made you talk to other people in there as opposed to staying within your little clan of friends/family.

First of all moms' had eggs and french toast... She said the eggs were floating on air once she put them in her mouth...and the french toast, was the bestus she's ever ever had.. Shes 65, so she's had a lot of french toast! Well she couldnt stop raving about it all the way home. LOL.  Me and pops both had the eggs, pancakes, and bacon, and that was well served and as fresh as you get. Coffee, was more than up to par. Service was excellent, as well as very attentive.

Overall experience here, I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the area, and if im ever in this area again, I will definitely stop here again to relive this religious experience.

Plus the asian girl who was running the register was hot;)

I come here regularly. The price is good and the food always hits the spot. This is a good place to share food as the portions run big. Everything is huuuuuge! The pancakes look like mini flying saucers and the omelets are as big as the plates. I have not finished an entire meal yet and I don't think I ever will. They serve lunch items / sandwiches as well. I've had their burger (cheese burger w/ mushrooms) and it's delicious! One of the best burgers I've ever had.

Come in early on weekends (before 9:30) to get seated without waiting, otherwise expect to get in line. They have outside seating, seats by the counter and communal tables. Very casual setting.

I went there today with my father and he is not a very sociable person, he prefers to have private breakfasts with family rather than meeting new people etc. The tables inside are rather big and usually different groups will share it, so we ended up talking to new people that we shared or table with and didn't really get a chance to spend some quality time together as we wished for.

So, in my opinion, if you're looking for some alone time with your newspaper or a cozy breakfast with a girlfriend, maybe Fred's won't be the best place, unless you can afford to wait for a table to sit outside.

But if you are hungry and happy and are looking for some adventure and want to meet some new people and start a wonderful Sunday, then I definitely recommend Fred's Coffee :) The food is great, the atmosphere is fantastic, the waiters are friendly and kind. It's just FABULOUS!

We go for the D.F. French toast, but stay for the cheesy eggs, good coffee and friendly prompt waitstaff...

While probably not the most healthy choice, the French Toast is like none I have had anywhere else.  Sort of like a huge donut with Syrup (pay for the real Syrup, or am I confusing another place...)

They might have other good stuff, it always looks good, but I can't avoid the French Toast...just make sure to do some Cardio afterwards!  Love it!

I thought this place was really good for breakfast. We sat at the counter and had omelette's. I had the egg white but added more meat and Jalapenos and my other half had the spicy one with the Hash browns and toast. These guys are are great breakfast cooks. The food is great and there is a lot of it. We pro bally could have split one dish and been really happy. It is a great place to stop and much better than the counter parts down the street. Tourist free or at least minimum issues with waiting forever. They are quick, efficient and it is just what you want in a breakfast joint.

We drove across the Golden Gate to grab breakfast at Fred's Place in Sausalito. We had woken up early to scope out China Beach and Baker Beach for potential fishing spots and were hungry by 9am. It was a lovely day, so the drive across the Golden Gate gave us splendid views of SF and the bay! Fred's is away from the tourist area, so a perfect quick getaway from the city.

On the recommendation of Jade M, I had to try the deep fried French toast. Since the pancakes served at Fred's are Swedish-style, I had to get some of that too! I asked the waitress if that was possible, and lucky for me, I was able to get both. It's funny because on the order ticket, it said "ODD" because O = pancake and D = deep fried French toast. I went all out and ordered a full stack with a full order of bacon. Needless to say, my stomach was larger than my eyes that morning, and I ended up taking half of it to go.

The OJ was fresh squeezed. The food was tasty, and the portions were generous. The avocado omelet with fresh salsa was also ordered, and so I got to try some of that. YUM. The eggs are whipped on the spot, and they're extra fluffy! It's nothing too fancy, but certainly hits the spot.

Four stars for an "ODD" breakfast that was delicious and filling! I'm glad they have Swedish pancakes, but I'll have to carry some lingonberry sauce with me the next time I go!

You cannot drop by Fred's and -not- have the French Toast. It's massive, fused together with glaze and just...there are no words. It's probably a heart attack on a plate but for months I drove over the Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday mornings driven with lust for it.

The place is dog-friendly with some outdoor seating and sometimes the waitstaff is kind enough to fetch a piece of bacon for your pup. If you come at noon be prepared to wait - even the locals aren't bored with Fred's yet.

I had some friends visiting the art festival in Sausalito, so after grabbing them from the city, we drove over the bridge for some tasty brunch at Fred's. I love my breakfasts, so I was hoping to be absolutely wowed from what I've heard, and for the most part, was not disappointed.

Seating was sparse, as this place is very popular, so we were seated at half a table across from other diners. Different than what I was expecting, but still a pretty cool way to meet people, even though we did not talk very much.

I opted for breakfast, having a plate of pancakes, sausage, eggs and toast. The pancakes were big, fluffy, and really good at soaking up the syrup. The sausage eggs and toast were great...although you can't really screw those up too bad!

If you're in the area and want a quick breakfast, this is the place to go. The staff is friendly, the food is really good, and the prices are easy on the pocketbook. I wouldn't call it the BEST breakfast I've ever had, but it ranks high on the list!

Came here on a tip from a friend who lives in the area and he said it was a must for breakfast. Being the breakfast person that I am, I had to come and eat here.

The sign on the window says world famous french toast and although I don't really like french toast, I decided to try it.  OMG!! I totally would've ordered another plate if it wasn't for the fact that it already was spilling over my plate. That's how much food they give you here. It was heavenly, deep fried and delicious!  No wonder there was a line for this place.  My friend had the pancakes, took a bit and thought those were pretty good too.  The freshly squeezed orange juice washed everything down.

The servers were all really nice and on top of things and the concept of sharing a table was new to me, but everyone was pretty friendly so overall, a great experience. Would go to Fred's again when I'm in the area!

I got taken here by a friend for brunch a couple of weeks ago. All I have to say is...deep fried french toast.

Location: Weird location for me since I am a non-driving San Franciscan. It's located across the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito. You better either have car, or enough drive to walk the bridge...it's worth it.

Space: It's your typical diner style experience. There are huge round tables where groups of strangers sit together and share the magical experience. Even though the interior decor was humdrum, to say the least, I will not deduct a point because of the beautiful view out the large windows.

Ambiance: Just your typical North Bay folk. We looked like the United Colors of Benetton inside a Tommy Hilfiger ad.

Service: Nice Korean family owned business. They were nice and helpful.

Food/Drink: This is the part that earns all the stars in the world. They serve amazingly thin pancakes that don't make me want to hurl. Most importantly they serve deep fried french toast. Their orange juice is also fresh and delicious. Even though I don't eat meat, it looked and smelled pretty appetizing. .5 star reduction for no alcohol...how else do you do brunch?

Overall: Deep fried french toast.

5 stars for their deep fried french toast!!!!!!!

OMFG....Fred's window does say World Famous Frech Toast & Pancakes!

My french toast tasted like a damn funnel cake! and I love me some funnel cake so to have both in french toast form was heavenly for me! Add some real maple syrup and I've gone to heaven!

I couldn't stop raving about it, my fluffy scrambled eggs were perfect, and my thick bacon was excellent.

My Mom loved her simple breakfast of eggs, toast & kalamata olive sausage!

If you're in Sausalito this is a great breakfast spot, good food, great, friendly service, & dog friendly.

Love the pancakes, love the scrambled eggs, love the unique french toast, and love the burgers and fries for lunch. Certainly not a health food restaurant, just a classic timeless gem that consistently makes a wonderful breakfast and lunch. They have real maple syrup at a slight extra charge if you ask for it which in my opinion makes a huge difference. If you want delicious food at a reasonable price Fred's Coffee Shop rules.

revisited here again the other day...  and although I still think the food is good (but not great), I am a fan of the home fries - warm and cooked through, crispy on the outside  (probably because the grill gets doused in butter, then the potatoes are liberally drizzeled with butter after they've been on the stove for a bit)  and also the deep friend french toast.  if you're ever craving funnel cake for breakfast - this is where you can find it!  Not exactly a healthy breakfast...  But a tasty one.

What a great spot for a weekend breakfast!

Get a seat outside and you can bring your doggy along to dine with you - always worth extra kudos for being dog friendly =)

I ordered the much talked about 'deep fried' french toast. Yeah, it was pretty flippin' delicious!! The BF ordered one of the egg plates with chorizo sausage - when he wasn't 'helping' me with my french toast, he was raving about how good the chorizo was.

Great breakfast spot - only complaint was the inattentive service. We wound up waiting for over 10 minutes to order because our waitress forgot about us. She was apologetic, but I think maybe she was attending to too many tables.

Either way - will def. be back when I have the craving for some really naughty french toast!

Good French Toast! Good and attentive service from the wait staff. A minor issue where our server got my egg order wrong, sunny-side up vs. over-easy. Considering how accommodating the staff was with us, changing the order wouldn't have been an issue but I chose not to bothered. Good hash brown but not so good linguisa. Pancakes were huge, let me say it again HUGE!!!

Warm and cozy ambiance!

Excellent breakfast food! Highly recommend the French Toast. It's the best you will ever have. Seating is difficult, it's a first come first serve restaurant. There's counter seating good for 8, 4 small tables outside and about 5 large family style tables inside.  So don't be shy, good eats with good people.

Wow, this is one of my favorite breakfast spots and I only just now found out about it.  Too bad it's all the way over in Sausalito but Fred's is the place!  Their French Toast was ridiculous and reminded me of funnel cake.  The pancakes were good and the omlettes are tasty as well.

Hash browns are perfectly 'browned' and not soggy or greasy and the staff are pretty decent, but it's really the food you are here for.  This was the perfect filling before a huge afternoon of drinking up in wine country and I would definitely suggest a fill up at Fred's before your next trip!

I have gone here twice and both times have been great.  The first time I had the deep-fried french toast (YUM!) and the second time I had the pancakes, along with sharing my guest's crab omelette.  She said the crab omelette was the best omelette she has ever had in her life.

The place is pretty small, and you can expect to have to share your table if you are just a 2-top (though this last time we sat at the counter and I think I like that better).

I definitely plan to go back.

Friday, July 3 means there will probably be tons of tourists in San Francisco and also lots of locals with the day off like ME! =D  This also means that it is a perfect opportunity for me to come try this famous breakfast place.  As hard as I tried to get up early to beat the brunch crowd... I just couldn't do it.  I called at 10:45am to see if they were open (just had to make sure) and to see how long the wait was... and surprisingly... their response "there is no wait right now"... =O  SERIOUSLY?! no wait?!  gotta hustle now!!  ...................... an hour later (I know I hustle pretty fast =P)  I arrive to Fred's... and actually parked right in front of the restaurant!  Second big shocker of the day-- parking easy in Sausalito?!  No way.. I just got lucky... but there seemed to be open spots in the street before turning the corner to Fred's.

The 3rd big shocker was that an hour later after I had called, there was no huge line out the door. I waited 2 minutes for the waiter to clean up our table, and BAMM! i was seated with menus in my hand.  I had a hard time deciding what I wanted, but I came here to try one thing:  deep fried french toast.  Their omelettes sounded delicious, and also looked gianormous!!  ... but I just HAD to try what they are known for.  I got the 2 french toasts and 1 pancake (swedish style).  I could have really done with just 1 french toast and 1 pancake or just 2 french toasts... it's a lot of food!!!  The pancake was large, but tasted like a regular pancake --swedish style or not.. it was ordinary.  The french toast wasn't greasy, aside from the massive amt of butter they put on it, and tasted really good.  It was nice and crunchy.  At $6.50 for 2 french toasts, I opted out of the 100% maple syrup... =P  I also got the side of hashbrowns, which were as everyone else has stated "not greasy and perfectly browned".  My friend got their 2 eggs with chicken apple sausage, which were really good.  Everything came in nice big portions.

Our total bill for 2 people + a grapefruit juice = $27 (incl tax and tip).... pretty steep for breakfast!  Nice to try once, but I wouldn't make the trek out to Fred's again.  Mama's in SF will do for me! =)

This place is the bomb!
Seriously good deep fried french toast. Great scrambles/omelettes made with what-you-want in it.
Fred's gets busy, and the under-staff but on-top-of-things waitress has to take care of many tables, so don't expect a quick eat and go. We went up to pay our bill after eating, and to our surprise some other table paid OUR bill, but not THEIRS. Ours was cheaper, and the cash register dude expected us to pay for the other tables' bill.  ?!?!?
So that was weird.
But back to the food. Thumbs up for the tastyness!

Best breakfast in Sausalito.

It's your local greasy spoon so don't expect fancy mimosas.

Do try the DEEP FRIED french toast.  Yes, I said DEEP FRIED french toast.  It's sinful. The linguica and chorizo are yum yum for the tum.  Fresh squeezed oj is really fresh squeezed. The fruit bowl is never only melon, it usually includes seasonal favorites like kiwi, strawberry, etc.  And enjoy the family style seating.  Hey, you might even meet some new people.  Like the friendly ladies who saw my husband and I sharing a french toast order.  Then when our egg breakfasts arrived the comment was, "Oh, here we thought you might be abstaining.  But it appears that was only an appetizer situation."

And sadly enough for me even though I eat obviously more than the local lady, I can rarely depart without a malt chocolate shake. I recommend the same to you.  Life is short.  Eat up!

I am with mnypny b. on this.
Reasons:
40 minute wait for our food, AFTER ordering. We waited 20 minutes just sitting at our table before someone came by and the place wasn't packed. People  who came in much later, were eating and almost done! They said it was because my boyfriends corned beef hash takes longer. I would have accepted that reason, BUT it came to the table cold, and tasted like out of a can. The eggs on top only warmed it up slightly :S

My scramble was ok, but the hash browns were cold, along with my english muffin with coagulated "butter" on top. Bf's hash browns were also cold and hardly browned. How hard is that to do right?

Three people took our drink order, but after 30 minutes, reminded someone about it. It wasn't even that busy.

Dirty dish rags were used to wipe down tables before the next party was seated.

Dazed and confused wait staff would bring other peoples orders to our table, then walk away dumbfounded.

No eye contact with staff so you could never flag anyone down.

And last but not least..... if one took a look behind the counter at the floor, overflowing garbage can, and the filth, I am sure they would not give this place such glowing reviews. The "cook" would just crack eggs and throw them behind him, landing on shelves that held bread, and most landed on the floor. The work counter was also filthy. I know, if a Health Inspector came in to do a random inspection, there would have been  some code violations.

There is no excuse for this. I have worked in the food industry. I also know a lot of busy restaurants that have their acts together, and have a clean environment in the process. This one doesn't.

We will not be back. Too bad. It was only a 10 minute walk from home :(

Love this restaurant. Bumped into Fred's on a Sunday morning, and while sharing a table isn't something I normally would do, it was nice--we ended up having a nice conversation with the two gentlemen across the table from us. We had the French Toast, and a really good omelette. Highly highly recommended for a nice neighborhood feel. My husband and I felt like we stumbled on a new favorite--very filling and very tasty!

Delicious.  Fast.  A little pricey for breakfast, but in the Acceptable range.  I had the egg white primavera omelette, which comes with cottage cheese and fruit salad.  I got a side of hash browns.  The coffee was good, the omelette was fantastic and the hash browns were just okay.  I was a great breakfast and far too much food for me to eat.

My husband got the deep fried french toast that everyone raves about.  "Oh!" I tasted it.  "It's like the fried dough at the county fair!"  But better.  He also had a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and couldn't stop smacking his lips and murmuring little "ooh babies" to it.

The only thing that I didn't like was that we were seated with another couple at a larger table - it's open seating.  Like some of the Sausalito residents I've encountered, they were lifeless.  Doesn't anyone say hi anymore?!?

All in all, Fred is the man.

love love love

selection here can't be beat.  you can mix and match and get everything your little heart desires.

we got the (2) french toast, but they let you do half/half so we got the pancake too!  bf liked the pancake, which was thin and chewy, almost crepe-like.  i preferred the french toast, which is made with extra love - fried on the skillet, then DEEP FRIED!  tastes like a beignet or donut!

they also have corned beef hash (from a can, my fave).

hash browns were crispy and non-greasy, bacon was too (almost).

bill for 2 was $20.  what a deal considering we had 1 pancake, 1 french toast, 2 eggs, full order of bacon, hash browns, corned beef hash, and english muffin.

we sat at the counter and saw the other orders come in - they also looked really good, including the burger and fries.

I usually skip breakfast or have a coffee in the morning.  Fred's in Sausalito is worth getting out of bed.  If you can't get up they are open til about 2pm.

The atmosphere is very small diner elbow bumping find yourself sharing a table with locals and tourist.  Yes there are lines at times but Oh My Buddha!!!  I can remember the taste by just looking at the pictures.

The only other Breakfast place that compares to Fred's that I have eaten at is Norma's in NY.  Fred has about half the menu of Norma's and about half the cost of Norma's too.

The food is so good and filling that you forget that people are around you as you dig in.  I will have Fred's for breakfast and won't be hungry till late afternoon.

Of all the things to do and see in the Bay area START you Day at Fred's.

I also want to add call ahead and make it "take-out" and walk/drive across to the small docks to the east.

Calling this place a coffee shop is like calling Starbucks a hamburger stand.

It just doesn't do ANY justice.

Starbucks is NOT a hamburger stand and Fred's is NOT a coffee shop.

Instead, Fred's should be called "Fred's, The Best Restaurant on the Planet."

I ordered a simple grilled cheese with tomato.

Four massive slices of cheese with two butter drenched tomatoes on thick whole grain toasted bread.

Honestly, if a phone sex operator read that line during one of their late night commercials, I would be their #1 customer.

Operator: You want me to talk about sex now?
Archie: Woah, slow down, let's talk about that butter, what kind of butter was it?  Salted?  Unsalted?  Clarified?

Oh, and the hashbrowns?  Drenched in butter.  And that, as usual, is a good thing.

Skillet.

For what it is, it does it well.

First and foremost, it's a local's coffee shop.  You share tables and there is no bayside dining.  The locals love it.  Tourists might find it to be way overrated.  This is not place to take a date for a nice view and to have brunch.

Fred died a long time ago of cancer; but, his spirit carries on.

They scramble their eggs in a blender for a long time.  It really whips them up.  The eggs come out light and fluffy.

The BLT is pretty good.  Prices are higher than they used to be.

My only complaint is that they need to clean the floor more often.  Coming back from the bathroom, the floor was so greasy our shoes were slipping and we almost fell down the stairs.  Yikes!

Good stuff!  My husband ordered the crab omelette, sooooo tastey.  I got the sourdough burger, great bread.  Friendly service.  My husband said the coffee was good too, and he's picky about his coffee.
Didn't have to deal with the wait because we went on Monday morning, we've avoided it so far on the weekends because the line always looks too long.

mmmmm.... found this place after a great run in Marin to avoid the SF chill.  What a great find!

It's unpretentious, huge portions, and taaaaasty!   When I go to brunch, I hate that I have to choose between eggs OR french toast.  I could get BOTH TOGETHER at Fred's.  And what a surprise when the french toast arrived...deep-fried perfection, not soggy or greasy, like a glorified beignet.  The fried edges crunched like a funnel cake.   I didn't even need the maple syrup (waste of $2)

The interior welcomes you like a cozy roadside cafe, with its mustard-colored walls and kitchy iron boat wall art.  You miss out on the views of the bay and SF that draws diners to Sausalito.   But, I will definitely be back!  Service was great, the drip coffee is well-brewed and it's all about the food.
