So glad to see such great reviews. It is literally true, there're not enough good things to say about Freddie. Here are the main ones: his abilities are beyond comprehension, the salon is gorgeous, he makes sure his services are affordable. Whether you need a trim, a new style, cut and color, Brazilian Blowout, extensions, are getting married, whatever you need - Freddie is the best. You might not get the customer service you get at other salons and if that matters to you, don't bother to go. Freddie doesn't kiss anybody's ass, unless you consider charging such ridiculously low rates, "ass kissing." Honestly, you can tip him $20+ without thinking twice, because he won't charge you enough. I don't even think of it as a tip, but an adjustment. He gives me a baseline and then I pay him what I can afford.
Freddie could charge twice what he charges me, but then, I wouldn't be able to go to him. So there you have it. He literally wants to be affordable. Oh and one more unbelievable feature - I can call him any time I want and he will cut my hair. I called after work on Friday, and he said "come in at 8:30." I only needed a trim, but he would have stayed up all night if I needed extensions, or had some other hair emergency.
I am lucky, most of the time, I only need a haircut. But if you need a process that takes many hours, you have to call Freddie. I should also mention that I get stopped on a regular basis by strangers who comment on how beautiful my hair is. I admit I am blessed with nice hair, but it looked like crap before I met Freddie. -

I've been contemplating on making an appointment here. Whenever I go to the gym upstairs from this place (which is hardly ever :P) it always strikes my curiosity. To be honest I had assumed by the size and location that it would be expensive. Then I came on Yelp and read that they were affordable so I called and made an appointment. Guy: Who would you like to make an appt with? Me: Well I dont know? I've never been there. Guy: Okay so how is 11 am on Monday? Me: Perfect!
So I arrive a tad bit early, 10:50 to be exact. I was scared when I first came because it seemed so dark inside and I thought they were closed and maybe didnt open until my appt time. I tried the door anyways and it was open. The door made a chime sound so I thought someone was going to help me...waiting about 8 minutes and no one came. The salon is really big and there was a giant Christmas tree in there which blocked the view... so I went back and two women were there with clients, a young one and older hefty size lady. The young blonde girl- rude never even looked up but the other lady asked me who I was there to see... I told her well I dont know his name but I spoke with a man and he told me to come in at 11 so here I am. She said "okay hunny go take a seat and he should be here any minute". So then I say this peculiar man come in wearing tights and some combat boots... he says good morning but I notice he has a heavy russian accent...this cant be the guy whom I spoke with. Finally its about 11:15 and no sign of this mystery man.... I started getting anxious, trying to call my husband like is this for real? Should I leave? Did this person even pencil me in? UGH! Finally this older gentleman with long hair comes in from the back and asks me the golden words "Have you been helped yet" Me: Nope, ive been waiting here and I was supposed to have an appt at 11.
He said " give me two minutes and I will take you back" Me: Okay (relieved!) So the guy who ended up doing my hair was the owner "Freddy" super cool, young at heart, a little crazy but awesome at hair. I told him he was legit! The best part is he charged me 75 bucks for color, wash, cut and style. In this economy that was music to my ears. I paid him 100 because he made my day. :) I will def be back and im so relieved to have found a hair dresser I can stick to! Everyone else on yelp is correct- no customer service but the price is right and so is the job that they do.
Oh and I really really really want to clean that "front desk" of theirs. So cluttered! my OCD drove me crazy in there. :) -

I can't say enough good things about Freddy. Here's the deal. If you are a good person. Then you'll see him as a good person. There's no doubt in my mind, that the bad reviews on here partially due to the bad attitudes and the expectations that you can treat a stylist with disrespect just b/c you're paying them for a service.
I get, color, cut and keratine treatments from him, and he's always MORE than ccomadting to my awkward work schedule. I've been in his chair at 2am finishing my hair. He's amazing!
My hair is who I am (sad but oh so true) and I trust it to one guy.... Freddy. -

My hairdresser of 15 some odd years moved. Yes, she moved....all the way over the hill to the Frederick Michael Salon. So, not quite as drastic a situation as initially thought, I was game for change.
This review is solely for the salon, since my hairdresser only rents the space. She (Denni Wooley) is reviewed separately.
Parking: A dream on Sunday. A nightmare on almost every other day. It's located in a strip mall with about a dozen other businesses, so you do the math.
Location: Conveniently located right off the 8 freeway.
Decor and layout: Open and spacious. Simple, modern decor.
Facilities: Large, clean bathrooms with a nice spa-like decor. There's even a shower in one of the bathrooms (I guess for post spray tan or massage).
Front desk: Usually it's the owner, Freddy, that sits up there and mans the front desk. He's got an easy vibe about him, and is not pretentious. Yup, that works for me.
All in all, a very nice upgrade for my very nice hairdresser. She deserves it! -

I've been to Freddy twice now for an updo. Both times my hair looked better than I imagined. Freddy's magic fingers does wonders. The first time I brought in a pic of a soft updo and when he was done, my hair looked EXACTLY like the picture. The second time (yesterday) I told him I wanted another soft updo but left everything else up to him. The staff is fun and really takes care of their customers.
I will always go to Freddy for an updo.. as long as he's available and will take me. My normal hairdresser is a good friend so I can't ever leave her but even she has said that Freddy is the best for updos.
You will not be disappointed. -

I'd been waiting to get my hair cut until the morning of a friend's wedding, instead of paying to get it cut earlier and then again just for styling (I'm cheap like that). So at 9:30am on Memorial Day I found myself standing out in front of a completely dark and deserted Paul Mitchell School (like I said, I'm cheap), despite the receptionist having assured me they'd be open and having booked my 9:30 appointment. My bad hair and I alternated between seething and panicking as I frantically called nearby salons to see if they had any last-minute openings. I had to leave for the wedding at noon, and by 10am had accrued enough rejections that I was starting to lose hope. But thankfully I kept widening my yelp search radius, and found Frederick Michael. He answered the salon phone himself, and just happened to have an opening at 10:45. I was saved!
The salon is really spacious and nicely laid out, and Freddy has got to be the coolest hairdresser I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. I had so much fun chatting with him throughout the haircut, and was really impressed by the cut I got, too. When he was done I asked if he could do beachy waves. He asked where the wedding was going to be (on the coast), and explained why, given the texture and natural tendencies of my hair, an updo would be better. I decided to go with it, and am so glad I did. It turned out absolutely gorgeous, and stayed non-frizzy and beautiful throughout the night. Freddy seriously knows his stuff. I was just in town for the weekend, but am planning to come back down to SD to get my hair cut the next time it starts looking straggly. Thanks Freddy! -

I love this place! I followed my hair stylist Kelly over here to her new home sweet home and I absolutely fell in love! I already have yelped about how great Kelly is and how everyone should trust her with their hair :) so I will go more in detail about this salon. I love how this place was very roomy and I like how they have couches for you to lounge on while waiting for your hair to color etc. Instead of having to just sit in the chair the whole time. I don't know if there was something special about Saturday but they had BBQ, salad, and beans catered!! I got my hair done during lunch so it hit the spot as I got my hair done. I am sure the other staff is just as professional because I saw all their up do's, colors, and cuts and they were all very nice. 5 stars for this place glad my stylist is apart of this team .

My hair sylist, David, recently moved to Frederick Michael's Salon. He has been my stylist for over 3 years now and I LOVE him. He pays such close attention to detail and never makes me feel like he's in a rush to finish the job. He really listens to what I want and helps to find the styles that best suit my personality and features. I highly recommend him!
As for the salon, it's a very clean, nice place, and the parking is definitely a lot better than most other salons I ventured to in San Diego. -

This salon is beautiful! The booths aren't crowded together, there are plenty of comfy couches to wait on if you're early, and everyone who works here is really great.

This was my first time going to Frederick Michael Salon. I found this salon on Yelp and could not be happier with my up-do. Everyone was very friendly and the place is beautiful. Freddy did my hair and I was impressed with his skills and the environment he creates. I'm going back for highlights and what I love MOST, they're open 7 days a week. Thank you for a great experience. You guys rock!!!!

So he did give me a free wedding trial, but it would've been nice to at least get some respect. I made an appointment, but he was 30 minutes late for my appointment. Then when he took me to the chair there was hair all over the floor. As I was explaining the hair styles I wanted for the wedding, he was yawning and not even apologizing for yawning. He then told me that I would have to come to the salon for the hair style I wanted rather than travel to me for my wedding day. Since then, I've found out I don't really need to do that. While he was doing my hair he burned my head 3 times, each time not being just a little burn, but really like digging the curler on my scalp. After I left the salon, my friend asked me if I got a hair cut as well. I told her I didn't. She told me I was covered in hair. I looked down and sure enough I was covered in someone else's hair. Totally gross!
He was also supposed to do my friend's hair for her wedding this past weekend. But he didn't even show up. Thankfully, she had a backup plan. -

Went in to Check out Freddie's skills as I am hiring him to do my hair for my wedding as well. He's got a great personality and has been doing hair for years. I got my hair highlighted and trimmed (although he jokingly threatened to cut it all off) - and I'm going back for more.
He did a great job on the highlights - I'm picky because I hate when it looks CHUNKY.
but he did make a comment about how much darker my natural color is. Now i"m thinking of going back for another color treatment. It's so affordable, I'm not hesitating.Listed in: Wedding Stuff

Went to Freddy's for hair and makeup for a fashion photo shoot. We had 2 models, one had a sleek pulled back sophisticated do and the other a romantic updo, both the hair do's were done by Freddy and were gorgeous. The makeup artist Faryal did a beautiful job on both models, accentuating the eyes and creating a look perfect for our theme.
What a gorgeous salon! Definitely makes you feel like a million $$$. -

Great hair stylist. Guys, she makes you look GOOD and she is funny to talk too. I have come to Becky for years now and I am never disappointed. The Price is great for a great quality and timely hair-cut. What ever style you want, she can make it happen.
In closing, if you want to look sharp, go to Becky. -

My hair dresser I've had for 10 years is here and it's a great place. In the middle of remodeling, but will look great when it's done.

Got my hair cut at Freddy's salon at the last minute. He did a great job and the price was awesome. This salon is still being built out, but all signs point to this being a place where folks can hang out, get their hair done, and have a good time.

I want to like Freddy, really I do. I mean how many stylists out there who $30 for color? Not many... I've given him three chances and although he did a decent job with my wedding hair, there is much to be desired of his customer service.
If you like to wait 25 for your stylist to finish his cuddling session with his girlfriend on the couch behind you, while he's 25 minutes late for your appointment try him out!
I've been to him four times (including my wedding trial) and he still doesn't recognize me or know my name or know why I'm even there, and we've had some pretty deep talks. It's a little strange. After waiting 25 minutes, he silently walks me over to a chair, goes over what color I want my hair (all over dark - pretty simple) and then disappears for another 15 minutes. But at least he didn't disappear to order pizza like last time!! He returns and starts putting the color on my roots, then his phone rings but he finished applying color to my roots. He sits in chair on the other side of the salon for oh about 30 minutes and finishes his conversation while I give him the evil eye because my roots are turning BLACK...not the color I was going for. Finally he puts the color through the rest of my hair for about 10 minutes then washed it out. Needless to say my hair is dark (pretty much what I was going for) but my roots are much darker.
My appointment was at 6:30 I walked out at 9:18. That's ridiculous!!
I didn't complain about the time then since he's made it obvious that he doesn't need the business from all the stories I've heard of him walking out on brides if they get too snippy at him, so I just figured I would Yelp him. I guess it's true when they say you get what you pay for.
BIG LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE
PS. he gets an extra star for the free wedding hair trial and $30 up do on wedding day. He should just stick to this. -

The rule is, "never get a haircut out of town", so why I waited to get one while in San Diego for a wedding, I don't know. And true to the adage I ended up with a neo-mullet, ala Carol Brady, courtesy of Mrs. Edward Scissorhands on Thursday night. Friday morning I found Freddy's salon on Google and called to explain my story. He said he would fix it and when I asked how much he said, "don't worry about it." I couldn't believe my ears. I showed up and he casually snipped away at my hair all the time chatting jovially with coworkers and customers alike. In short order I had a classic cut and true to his word he didn't charge me a penny. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and I definitely would recommend the salon to my relatives in SD. Unfortunately, I have no idea what they charge!

My husband and I have been clients of Freddie for many, many years. Naturally we followed him when he opened his beautiful, spacious salon in Mission Valley. Freddie is one of the most generous people I know. His prices are amazing and when we are at his salon he treats us like royalty. Most importantly, however, he does an amazing job on our hair every time. He just straightened my hair last weekend, a process I had wanted but was very nervous about doing. It came out beautifully! Thank you again Freddie, for all that you do!

Freddy did my bridal hair and my wedding party's hair. I was a little nervous to hire him after reading some of the posts, but I am very pleased. He did two free trials and the prices for the wedding day were awesome! He was late for my trial appointments but he was on time at the wedding. My hair was perfect on my wedding day!

Becky at Frederic Michael is awesome. Every time I get my hair cut, I get people from all over asking me where I get my hair cut, even people standing in the grocery line. It's amazing!! I have sent so many of my friends and they are so appreciative. None of us will ever go anywhere else. Becky, you can't ever stop doing hair!!!!!!!!!!!!

I discovered Freddy by coincidence and have never regretted it. He is professional, efficient, and friendly all the time. He is the only stylist I've trusted with my hair for all types of events. He colors, cuts, styles, straightens, does updo's for wedding and other events; you name it, he does it! His Salon: Fredrick Michael in Mission Valley is spectacular! Friendly, modern, stylish and extremely comfortable for high end pampering! I've recommended so many friends and family to Freddie and they, like me, are always 100% satisfied with his customer service and salon experience.

I have been going to Freddy for a year and a half now and I could not be happier!!! He does an amazing job at what he does and his prices cannot be beat!!! The salon he owns is really nice. A lot of space and he's done it all himself. I won't be going to anyone else for my hair as long as I live in SD!!!!

Becky does my color&cut at Frederick Michael. She does an awesome job in covering my gray. The product used leaves my hair very soft. Her haircut and style gives me a lot of volume. She's funny, enthusiastic and very easy to work with. The salon is looking good, thumbs up!
