Grrrrr.... so much Yelphate for Fred Segal.... really?! It's part of the fabric that is Los Angeles, people!! I remember myself as just a wee Brett at the tender age of 7 begging Mommy to take me on a field trip to Fred's... it was my utopia, even then. I'd gawk in awe at the lovely wares and exceptional-looking people buying them. "One day, Mama, you'll see... One day that will be ME!"

There isn't much to be said for Fred Segal except that it's a MUST STOP SHOP for any fashionista, fashionisto or fashiontyke alike. Whether you're browsing for fun, splurging for sport or licking the window displays like the rest of us, the selection and accompanying scene are marvelous. Gorgeous items sparkling and shimmering away, beckoning your touch and commanding your drool. Ah, yes, it's my Mothership.

It's a guarantee you'll find the latest and greatest in both new and upcoming fresh fashion (aka Fred Segal Trend... find: Elizabeth & James, Hanii Y, Gryphon, Current / Elliot) and the standard haute couture you've come to know, love and covet!

Trés chic accessories, shoes and bags (and don't forget the see-and-be-seen Fred Segal café) round out a complete and unparalleled los angeleno shopping experience. One star down the tubes for price and price alone... most items are inaccessible to the masses or require dedicated savings via self-control (which I simply do not possess). You see, despite the fact that the new patent leather Valentino flats were unrelentingly screaming my name, I still long to steal them rather than plunk down the seven hundo prerequisite to take them home sans handcuffs. Le Shopping Sigh.

Elitist snooty service. Play the "Get out the Gold Amex and watch the attitude change" game! Great fun!

The nearest place I could compare Fred's Seagulls to was Selfridges in London, but Freddy had squeezed all of the stock into a disorganised, poorly laid out shop.

I also loved the looks we got pulling into the parking lot in the Ford F150 we hired. I love to conform.

I have an intense dislike for this store. A lady friend of mine tried to return a damaged item that she got on sale. She's foreign, and at the time she didn't feel confident dealing with merchants, so I went with her for support. The employee at FS treated my friend like shit, talked down to her, was very disrespectful, and I just about kicked his ass.
I would never return to this store for any reason. Their stuff is overpriced and their employees are haughty.

A place for people who try to be trendy and have too much money, Fred Segal is not the best organized store. But it's a shop with gems worth checking out occasionally.

I've never experienced anything like Fred Segal. I purchased a $150.00 shirt from their website, but never received the shirt or any explanation for why my order was not filled. I called the store and spoke to a rather rude woman who took down my information and told me that someone would contact me with my order's whereabouts. When no one called me back, I sent Fred Segal both a letter and an e-mail asking for an explanation. I've never received a reply. Given that Fred Segal has treated me, a new customer, with nothing but contempt, I cannot recommend the place.

Wasn't too impressed.  The best part of this place is the greenery that encapsulates the building, it looks like Stephen King  did in "Creepshow" after he touched the meteor, all covered in green shit.

Shoe selection, okay, some Christian Louboutin's, Jimmy Choo's, the usual suspects.  Clothing selection, okay, overpriced and forgettable.  They had tons of cute sunglasses on display, for you to play with, didn't have to ask a sales girl to assist you in pulling out sunglasses behind a glass case, that was fun.  One sales person greeted me, in the shoe section and the only person that seemed nice upstairs was the visual merchandiser.  Wouldn't come back to this location, it was kinda' small and a waste of time.  I had much more fun at the Melrose Trading Post and didn't have to jack an old rich couple to buy anything.

A girlfriend of mine just left me a voice mail asking if I want to run over to the Fred Segal sale with her tomorrow - and she sounded so excited I thought there was something more coming at the end of the message, like we won a free shopping spree or something...which would really be the only way I would ever consider stepping foot into this place again!

I went with this same girlfriend last year to this same sale. I had only been to the store one other time 3 or 4 years ago and remembered it to be so boring that my best friend I was with at the time, who literally is not capable of leaving any store empty handed, did just that. We were in and out in less than 10 minutes and never returned.

That being said, I am not one to miss a good sale so I agreed to go and check it out. We went on the 90% off day so I was in high spirits when we walked in the door - that quickly changed. After walking around for a good 20 minutes or so me and my girlfriend both had arms full of items and headed for a dressing room. Of course the place was swamped and getting into a dressing room was a challenge. I usually come prepared to try on right there on the sales floor when I go to sample sales, but at a store sale I come expecting to be able to try things on. Besides, it wasn't even an option while on the sales floor because you would have been knocked over and likely would have had some girl reaching for your stash.

So we head to get in line for a room, but there were about 3 random lines and none seemed to head to the dressing rooms. There were 2 female sales associates helping some guy who seemed to be picking things out for his girlfriend and they happened to be standing in front of the dressing room door.

I asked one of the two girls if there was a line we should be in to get into a room. She looked at me as if I had just insulted her Mother and said "I have no idea, I'm with a customer."

Now, let me say for the record - I do love a good sale, but I am not one of those women who enjoys the pushing, shoving, the snatching and all of the attitude that comes along with it. I have a very low tolerance for people who are simply rude, the fact that it is a SALE! is not an excuse to me for people to be nasty and crude.

I have worked in retail before so I am actually somewhat understanding when sales people seem to be having a not so great day, whatever, I don't take it personally. But when the attitude I am being given is so clearly based on snobbery and stuck up bitchiness my patience goes out the window.

I replied to her: "I was simply asking you a question and your attitude is really not necessary."

She said back: "And I answered your question."

I said: "Actually, you didn't."

And then she turns away from me and says under her breath,
"Well, I don't know what you expect me to do."

Unbelievable!

I replied: "I expected you to do your job, but I guess asking you do that is asking too much."

She rolled her eyes and let out this big sigh.

I added: "I hope this isn't a career choice for you because you are absolutely terrible at it."

The other sales girl working with her, who watched the whole thing, then jumped in and opened the door for me to the dressing room they had been standing in front of and says to go ahead in. Turns out, there was no one even in the room, but rather they were holding the piles of clothes in the room for the guy they were helping. I was just laughing at that point, I mean they had to be kidding me, right!

To sum up, we tried on our stuff and I ended up leaving with two things, even with 90% off I still didn't find more than that worth buying. And I made a point to let the manager know about her rude ass staff member before we left. Of course, he apologized but honestly, it could not have been less sincere. Not that I was expecting much, clearly this was not a huge out of the ordinary experience in their establishment. Perhaps if I had been spending a few grand on their overpriced, non special items and requiring the help of two or three personal shoppers I would have been treated with a bit more respect. Looks like it's my fault folks! LoL

Needless to say, I will not be joining my girlfriend tomorrow. These places seem to forget that we, the customers, pay their salaries, we keep their doors open. A fellow Yelper says in her review "the staff has a bit of an attitude, but we've all come to expect that in the fancy stores of LA." Hmm...expect or accept?

If they only want to be pleasant and helpful to a select group of people, well then they can depend on only those people to pay their bills. My money sure as hell is not going to help do it.

I got a text from a friend that said "Fred Segal sale 80% off". Oh yeah, I forgot "THE SALE" is this time of year. I begrudingly went because I hate going to sales this late in the game. Holy hell, there were more people at the last leg of the sale than there were the first day last year, which I bet is comparable to the first day this year. I saw this Vanessa Bruno dress that I have been wanting since I worked there [RH, same difference so whatever]. It was missing all the buttons and the inside slip and while it was 80% off, to pay 20% of $800 is still a lot of money to pay for something so damaged. I found a perfect version one size smaller. I was so overwhelmed by the crowd, I didn't even bother to try it on.

I wore it to work today and literally got at least 15 compliments on it and even asked by one if I had the dress custom fitted.

I rarely shop here anymore, but the fact that the one dress I have been thinking about for over a year was here at a bigger discount than when I was an employee makes me happy.

I only came here on accident because I was driving with some friends down Melrose and had to make a u-turn and we ended up in the parking lot. We didn't get out of the car to go inside, but rather to ask the paparazzi in the parking lot who was inside. It was Paris Hilton.

I think she was in the restaurant or in the department next door. I decided to kill time so I went to the luggage section building and the shoes. Pretty good place to window shop at. Looked around for 10 minutes then went back to the paparazzi.

So there I was with my point and shoot while everybody had huge professional cameras walking backwards with the crowd trying to snap a photo of this retarded bitch. I knew this would be my only chance to harass her so i started yelling 'What did you buy?' 'How much was your car?' 'Say That's Hot!' 'C'mon say it!' 'Where are you going after this?' 'Why do you have big feet?' Okay, I just thought of that last question and i'm kicking myself for not thinking of it at the time.

I always thought of FS as the more downtown, streety version of Barneys. I come down to LA usually when they have a sale I seem to time it right. The
store is kind of laid out weird. Their sale is worth attending but the last time the crowds were so thick I gave up the shirt wasn't THAT great.

Come August and Lindsay Lohan's leggings will hit Fred Segal!  Omg freak out!

It's hard to ignore that this is one of the places the "stars go to shop," but I like it.  It's a friendly boutique experience.  And these people leave their customers alone until help is needed.

The seasons latest fashionables are almost guaranteed to be here, but whether you want it to be is another question.  One thing I personally love about Freds...they always have all the right sizes...and while I'm at it...the best accessories.

You can even get a personal shopper or hire agent represented make-up ppl...yanno, if you drive a Lexus or somethin...

I hate to say this, but if you're hesitant to drop your paycheck like me on Fred's wait till their holiday sale, you'll feel better about yourself having spent money on clothes instead of charities.

Mens' shorts $546
Thom Browne Cashmere Sweater vest $1400
Cute little bowl in the Home section $440

Me and my friends: Laughing hysterically. Not the place to be on your last day of vaca in LA with empty wallets and maxed out credit cards. WIth a nod to my friend who works in the baby/toddler/future actors of Hollwyood section...Fred Segal seems a little worn out. And I don't mind so much being ignored by the staff, but seeing them cluster in little cliques sure makes you feel left out!

I mentioned the big once a year sale to my buddies and we'll make the road trip from AZ for it. We'll just be sure to make FS a first stop and not a last.

Fred Segal is my favorite place to shop in America (Santa Monica location is better than Melrose).... and I have ALWAYS found the staff to be friendly and helpful; but then again, I'm friendly and have a good attitude. Great assortment. If you're not prepared to deal with sometimes high prices, stay away.

Many of the clothing and accessories you will find at Fred Segal are designed by local designers. Moreover, the styles are unique and cutting edge.

I prefer the store in Santa Monica, as it is much more spread out and there is more to see. However, the shoe department at the Melrose store is more eclectic and there is more variety. If you've ever been to New York, where you feel a pulse wherever you go; you may feel something lacking upon touching L.A. soil. However, you should know that behind the walls and doors of Fred Segal, there is an amazing excitement and a piece of that N.Y. pulse.

I really enjoyed browsing through this store - what afantastic selection of designer labels. I didn't break out the credit cards as I knew it would only lead to trouble. My friend and I had lunch at the restaurant there and it was truly excellent. I had the carrot juice to drink, enticed by it's vibrant color, it tasted even better than it looked.

The staff has a bit of an attitude, but we've all come to expect that in the fancy stores of LA!

I am still trying to figure out why this place is still popular. Maybe because it's a Melrose institution, but it hardly packs a punch anymore. Outside the Men's section upstairs, all of the sales people are lazy and just socialize with themselves. Are they there just for props and giggles? I don't get it.

In terms of merchandise, they have some decent stuff about 20% of the time I've been there. But, honestly, some of the stuff you can get at American Apparel for 1/20 of the cost. No seriously. Just because some Indie Designer made this shirt doesn't mean it's worth $300. It's vastly overpriced.

I really only let myself browse here, as bringing the credit card can turn into trouble come bill pay time ;) Housed in this ivy covered building on Melrose is an oasis of one of a kind and designer goodies. Clothing, jewelry, handbags, the works. If it's designer and it's cool, FS has got it.

And if you can't really afford what they are selling, do what I do and go to this place to get inspired and then head over to the Bev Center to recreate the trends at half the price. So for inspiration and pretty things to touch and look at, I give it a strong 5 stars :)

This review is just for the shopping aspect, I reviewed Mauro's Cafe separately.  I really only go to Fred Segal for: their perfume selection, and to browse at the bags and shoes.  A lot of their bags aren't really my taste, but some of them are really cute, same with the shoes.  Also, a lot of them are out of my price range (thousands).  Paying $60 for a tshirt?  I can live without it.  The staff in the perfume department are very nice and helpful.  The staff in the clothing department, no so much.  They were a little less than thrilled at *just* the T-shirt when I requested a gift box.  Sorry?  Cool to look around, and if you're into celebs and/or the Hollywood scene.  They do have some nice merchandise in the accessories and beauty/fragrances area, but the rest of it is a pass.  Parking is kinda hairy, narrow narrow spaces and expensive cars you don't want to ding!

If I were a size 2, I would love coming here for their unique selection of clothing and accessories. Oh yah, and I'd have to be rich to do so.

Would I come here regularly? No. It's way pricey. I've found all kinds of other boutiques and hole in the wall stores with comparable, unique clothing at a fraction of the cost.

However...there's some sort of allure involved here... Maybe the ivy-clad exterior has some sort of magical powers. Who knows. But...anyone who's anyone's heard of Fred Segal and you can't help but want to make your way inside -- to catch up on the nifty LA trends, or even just to potentially spot a celeb. It's part of the LA experience and just something you HAVE to do.

I was going to splurge and buy a semi-expensive wallet (which was UBER cute!), but...I went to Von Dutch and ended up buying a hat instead. It was sunny that day. The hat served more of a purpose than the wallet would have. I already had a rubber band holding my MONIES together, HA! :)

I managed to catch the huge Ron Herman sale yesterday and scored a cool dress for $9.99!

However, it was a madhouse and pretty much everything cool was picked over.  People were ransacking the place which was understandable as quite a few things that were $400 were all marked down to $9.99.  People were dragging around empty boxes and they were just throwing random things in there, without caring about the sizes, rips or dirt on the clothes.  I guess they plan to resell on ebay or something.

I did see some people trying on clothes hither thither.  Um, don't wear a thong, ladies when you go to these sales. I don't need you to show me your lumpy cellulite ass.  Oy, my eyes.

And yeah, if you just have one thing to purchase, just be patient.  No one is going to let you cut in line nor do they want to buy your item for you even if you give them the whole 19 cents leftover from your $11 (9.99 plus tax is $10.81).

Definitely favor the Melrose location over Santa Monica. They do a great job of bringing in the newest designers and making it shoppable. The free city gear is sick and I wear my hoodie daily. They have a good selection of lingerie downstairs. Its an easy place to replenish my skincare and candles when I run out. I also love the cafe for a brief stop of a glass of wine in the middle of shopping

Fred Segal has no equivalent up here in the Bay Area and I literally fly back down just to shop there.  However, I am not a fan of the Melrose location at all.  Too small and not as friendly as the one on Broadway (in Santa Monica).
Nonetheless, this is an amazing store and is a must stop if you're in the area.

My brother and I went here for their semi-annual sale, and he had a Pretty Woman moment! And I don't mean that he laughed as someone playfully  closed a box containing a pearl necklace in front of his hand.

He had a saleswoman suggest to him, seriously, that the clothes in her store were not his "style." Translation - he was too poor.

And let me say that I will spend good money on clothes when they are worth it. But Fred Segal's actually had me saying "$300 for a shirt that's the size of a piece of floss?!?" That's right, I turned into my mother. Do you really want to turn into your mother when you are out clothes shopping?

Only go to FS if you are looking for a laugh, or trying to show your friends from out-of-town how ridiculous the New Money bling-bling people of Hollywood are. Like stephy s., I'll go to places like this to get inspiration on how to tear up my t-shirts to look fancy, too, but the vibe at this FS just made it not worth it.

I've been obsessing about getting a Spruce slim fit hoodie for a long time now, went to Nom de Guerre's SoHo location while I was in NYC and they didn't have any there, and didn't have time to go to Williamsburgh. So out of curiosity I called Fred Segal to check if they had one and would ship it out to me. they did and would ship! Awesome! So I got one on its way, will edit this review when I get it, but overall the customer service has been great, they were very helpful over the phone and was able to get it ordered and shipped quickly.

also it's awesome that im in NorCal and they're just down in LA, UPS Ground is cheap and fast! Takes about 2 days only!

Fred Segal on Melrose has a much better clothing selection than the store in Santa Monica.  Whoever the buyer is does a fantastic job of selecting items for the shoes, fine apparel, casual and sporty departments.  Head here if you need something that's stylish, sexy and a current trend.

I always find something I love in this store.  Whether my bank account can afford it is another story.

The haircare area is limited.  There's a cafe next door convenient for grabbing a bite to eat on-the-run and to mingle at with other store patrons.  For haircare products, you should definitely stop at the Santa Monica location.  They carry the Kerastase line.

What turned into a weekly ritual has sadly turned into only 2 times a month.  They need to open a Fred Segal in the Bay Area, please.

I browsed the designer racks, spotted Denise Richards, bought a pair of flip flops, and then moved on to Forever 21 where I spent less money on 2 shirts than I did on the flip flops from Fred Segal.

Had a fun lunch here at the cafe. Consisted of a 4 dollar lemonade, and a 12 dollar chicken salad. Pricey, yes... but the food was fresh and the atmosphere was nice and surprisingly unpretentious. The store itself was enjoyable. Everything was cute and expensive, no surprise there. A nice way to spend an idle Sunday afternoon, browsing and admiring all the things you can't have.

I don't want to focus on semantics (but I will regardless), so this is actually not owned by Fred Segal.  This place is owned by Ron Herman and they pay a license fee to use the name Fred Segal.  But that's not important.  This store is ok, I prefer the Santa Monica location.  The layout is confusing, and the merchandise seems disorganized.  The staff is bitchy, but bitchy retail staff never really bothered me.  I mean, they work in retail, if we operated on a caste system, retail employees would be pretty close to the bottom.  Oh was that bitchy of me?  Oops.

Another store I was not impressed with. Ever since seeing Clueless I imagined this place to be legendary. WRONG. It was actually a waste of my $20 car ride to there. They had like 2 cute things in the whole store. I guess this place was "the place" back in the day... when Clueless was "the movie"- or atleast for me. Haha.

What is up with not being able to actually go over and check out the jeans yourself. You have to point to the pairs of jeans you want to see and tell the sales lady to bring them to you. That is not efficient shopping and I have only so much time to shop. The only thing I bought here is a $125 book with great pictures of LA for my coffee table and obviously it was way too much but its fabulous. They had a great selection of photography books but I would rather go to a bookstore for those and support the dying bookstore industry.  As for the clothes - unaffordable is an understatement.
