Pretty amazing pizza, and the workers are consistently nice people. Rain or Shine they smile and give you what you want. They will however give you attitude if you are a pizza snob and complain for not getting a deal under 5.00. To bad jose! this is much better pizza than most and it's still pretty inexpensive. Don't want to pay 5-6 bucks for 2 slices and a drink? walk 10 blocks and go to Two Bro's pizza.
No frills pizza with a smile. Fresh and yummy, makes my tummy feel soooooo... damn nothing rhythms. ha. oh well some other time.
One of my go-to lunch places. The pizza alone is worth 4 stars, but the price pushes it over the top. As others have said, this is just good, no-frills pizza. Stick with the plain slice for $2 because it's always hot and fresh out of the oven. The crust has that slightly-crispy texture that every New York slice should have, and the sauce has a bit of a tangy flavor, although it seems to vary a little bit from day to day.
One tip: If there's space available in the tiny shop, eat it there. It's definitely best really fresh.
A pretty good slice all things considered. At $2 it is still a decent bargain but it would be nice if they did a two slice + soda for $4 deal.
I just started working in the immediate area and used to attend Baruch College and this was a go to spot along with Mike Dues pizza down the block on 25th and 3rd Ave. I'll have to do a taste test one of these days.
The decor is beyond shabby and the proximity to a methodone clinic further add to the shabbiness of this spot. Case in point, I had three dollars and four quarters in my pocket ready to order two slices but let a disheveled older gent ahead of me. He ends up asking for some free food explaining how he was just let out of the hospital and has not been fed. The workers, apparently immune to things like this, swatted him away like a fly.
I bought by two slices. The older hungry gent got one of 'em. My belly ended up full anyway, I guess from my good deed of the day.
Good pizza, a staple for Baruchians.
The price keeps going up but the pizza quality remains consistent. Good spot for quick slice. I wish I can give it more stars but one time I bought a slice and paid with a $20 bill and the guy at the counter gave me this really loud annoying tsk sound. What's your problem man? That really irked me even to this day.
I just can't let it go man! Argh!
Only 3 Stars for you!
This has to be my staple work "go to" place. Whenever I need some food for lunch and do not want to spend money, my hard earned $2 goes straight here.
The pizza here is pretty good, the crust is slightly crunchy, and it is always hot and pretty fresh all the time since it seems there are so many people coming in and out of it.
My average meal is most likely a slice of cheese pizza and an Arizona ice tea from the 7-11 down the street. All in all for a $3 meal, you can't really beat it, especially around here.
The convenience is just hard to beat!
Frank's was average, at best.
I ordered a plain, a Sicilian with mushrooms and pepperoni and a veggie for some hungry Community Managers. I didn't get the Sicilian, instead I got another pizza that appeared exactly the same as the plain but with mushrooms and pepperoni on top.
These overly doughy, lackluster pies reminded me to, in future, direct the calories and cash I have earmarked for pizza toward other outlets.
This was simply okay pizza.
What was best about it was the nice zesty sauce that was better than many others I've tried. Other than that, the pizza was slightly too bready and there just wasn't enough cheese. The price is nice ($2) I guess but it doesn't make up for the actual slice.
yikes! ordered a whole pie and was totally unimpressed... soggy, oily and the sauce was just okay. the delivery was quick and easy, but it really didn't hit the spot when we dug in.
This is no-frills, we don't mess around, very satisfying pizza-on-the-run. $2 per slice, fast service, fresh pizza at all hours, all-around great value. Generous portions, great tomato sauce, excellent hangover food when I'm craving something substantial and slightly greasy. This is what I call a staple, a solid basic.
Plain cheese regular, and plain cheese sicilian, both are awesome. This is not gourmet pizza, so don't go in expecting that style of pizza. But this is very good eats. Definitely Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-worthy...
I think their pizza is good, but nothing to rave home about. It's cheap so you can't really complain about it too much.
My guess is that people that didn't like this place (there are very few) don't actually like pizza. Before I came to NYC I didn't really like pizza either. Well, I thought that i liked it--I named it as my favorite food many times during elementary school. I used to work at a domino's and during that time, I ate pizza pretty much every day. It was filling, free, and tasted ok cold or hot. Also it helped that you could have an almost limitless variety of toppings and combinations.
my favorite topping? everything!
"why eat a plain cheese pizza?" I thought.
Well, if you don't know the answer, go eat a slice at Frank's, and if you're not in to it, maybe you just don't like pizza. go eat a sausage or some pineapples or something.
There's a lot of places that will sell a cheap slice of pizza, but no others near my work that do it as fresh, hot, efficient, and with the right ratio of cheese gooeyness to sauce chunkiness as Frank's
Great pizza, reminds me of the old days (by old days, I mean the 70's/early 80's for me) when NY was filled with pizzerias like this. Definitely a throwback, kind of pizza I can see Tony Manero getting a couple of slices and strutting around town while eating it. Still some good places left in NY like this and Mariella's but now mostly it's pseudo corporate places like Bravo (not quite as bad as Domino's but not as good as indy joints). This place has good cheese to sauce to dough ratio.
Hands down the best slice in New York City, I used to hit this spot up back in the 90's when I was attending School of Visual Arts, when ever I'm in the neighborhood I drop in for a slice, I'm a sucker for piping zesty sauce on a cold NY day.
This place gets 5 stars and a snap in Z formation heeeeeey?!
There are two kinds of pizzas. The "I am pizza snob" Lombardis type of place, and then there's your "everyday I'm a real New Yorker and just need a good slice to tide me over till my next meal." Frank's falls under the second. It's a quick slice to grab before you head on your journey elsewhere.
But it's not just that. Somehow Frank's manages to cram everything a pizza should be in one nice sized slice. And they do it really inexpensively. And I'm not one for cheaper than average pizza. What you save in your wallet, you pay for in lack of taste. Frank's defies this pizza strategy.
Yes, it's a small hole in the wall, and you really have to squeeze your way through, but if you're on the east side around 23rd St, definitely grab a slice and relish what a real New Yorker slice is.
Being a grad student at Baruch College and this place being right by campus and cheap ($2 for a cheese slice & $1 for a can of soda = $3 meal!) well I must give it five stars. The pizza is very good nice and cheesy yum! I haven't ventured out to try other things, well because $3, works well with my student budget (no more fat paychecks, now it's cheap student meals again).
The service is a bit stupid though, but really what do you expect from a literal hole in the wall place. I went yesterday for an early dinner before class and I gave the man $10 and he gave me $2 change for a $3 meal. I told him, "I gave you a $10." He tells me, "No, $5." Getting irritated I say, "NO, I gave you a $10." He proceeds to look at the register and give me my $5. Geez, pay attention!!
But anyway, I still like the pizza and if anything I'll just pay with exact change - hoping I have it.
I have yet to find better pizza in this area... or actually, at all within the city for the cost-quality ratio.
If there's a line, it will die in 5-10 seconds. If the place seems so crowded that you may not be able to pop a stool and pour over the cheap deliciousness, give it a minute. 10 bucks says some awkward middle-school couple will get up. Or that guy on his way to work. Or the out-of-touch man who is drinking a coffee...
Frank's has such a simple, efficient concept. They are just constantly making fresh cheese pizza pies all day long. You want pepperoni? Cool, we're adding pepperonis to a slice of that fresh cheese pizza pie that just came out of the oven. And so on, and so forth. It's brilliant.
Unlike Bravo's and others like it, the pizza is constantly fresh. They just slice it an plate it - no waiting around for them to reheat an already cooked slice.
Frank's respects your time. And I respect Frank's.
The pizza is average, but for $2 a slice and 10 second service you can't ask for much more.
Cheap, tasty pizza. What else could you ask for?
It's not typical NY thin crust pizza, which I like. I like the crust to be a little "breadier". As long as you know this, I'm sure you'll enjoy.
Yes, only the true pizza fans know this is probably New York City's best pizza. The crust is great not too thick not too thin, and the tomato flavor is robust and bursting in flavor, because they probably added some
peppers to it, and a good amount of garlic. The little tomatoes in the sauce itself explode your taste buds with the spice added to it. And the perfect amount of mozzarella that pulls nicely when you bite gently into it, it's like a violin playing a note sweetly. If you get a slice.. point to the pie and ask for a slice where the crust is not blackened or slightly over cooked, but LIGHT.
They usually have 1 to 3 pies out, and you can ask for the fresher one if you like.
I usually buy one slice at a time.. and get a second fresh... with a large coke.
Their fountain coke too I think has real sugar, none of the corn sugar syrup crap. So even the cokes are very much addicting and delicious.
Don;t be a snob. Who cares if the place looks like a garbage can that has come to life. Who cares if you have your own best pizza in nyc place.. try this one. I seriously am not one to judge pizza because it comes in so many forms..(waiting to try Difara's) but I really think about Frank's and crave it when I have other plain cheese slices. Might be the sicilian sauce.
My Baruch friends used to eat this baby every single day.
Frank's. Between Park and Lexington. Don;t forget the name. It's thick and cheesy $1.50 slices.
A literal 'hole in the wall', but an enchanted hole. Not enchanted with elfs, wizards or magical pixies, but instead with great pizza offerings. (Of course with all the students around, you might find a 'Potter kid' or even a ''LOTR druid nerd" but I wouldn't count them as real because we all know they are just zitty teens that suffer from crippling masturbation and gender identity issues...) moving along...
When I first moved to NYC, fall 1997, my first job was down the street from Franks' Pizza. Everyone at work said it was 'great'. So, one day i tried it and was hooked. Its simply great cheese and sauce and a terrific crust. Two slices and a large coke (with ice) is about $5 bucks. This is New York, the town where parking is freakin' $500+ a month. So Frank's is a steal of a deal.
I'm not in the Flatiron District often, but when I am, I make an effort to have at least a slice, a coke and a moment to reflect. Its great!
don't know how pizza can be more delicious than this. the thin slice was good, the sauce was sweet and salty, and the cheese was thick.
the thick crust pizza, the square like one was full of yummy sauce and very tasty.
so cheap too!
Frank's Pizza...one of the most underrated traditional slice joints in Manhattan. An absolute must to stop by here before a concert at the Gramercy (Blender) Theater. Perfectly proportioned cheese/slice/crust factor and just a really great pizza sauce. I like this better than Joe's on Bleeker and Carmine- am I being sacreligious?
EDIT- Bumped down a star. How about giving us some warm slices? It just isn't the same when it isn't fresh.
I echo other comments: crust a bit doughy, but acceptable; cheese not drippy; sauce good but not remarkable; fast service; cheap price. Look forward to coming back when I'm in the area.
Good grab and go pizza. No drippage = 4 stars. A little doughy but otherwise a good NY slice of pizza.
I used to grab pizza here all the time when I went to Baruch. And I know what you are thinking when you pass by. The first couple of times I walked by it I probably thought the same thing. That place looks dirty and disgusting who the @##$ would eat there. But after hearing several of my fellow students rave about the place I eventually relented after finding few affordable lunch spots in the area. I was shocked that such a good slice could come from such a dirty gross hole in the wall joint. Soon I became a twice a week visitor. When I find myself in the area I make a bee line for Franks.
Why am I downgrading it to 3 stars? Because it tastes different. In a bad way. It's not the same tangy pizza I used to eat. The main thing is that is different is that it's very dough, or bread-y I should say. If you've every attempted to make your own pizza dough at home and it came out thick and dry out of the oven, then this is how it tasted. So once I got past the "bread" the sauce had changed too. It doesn't have that sweet tangy taste as it did back in the past. I hope they were having a bad day making sauce and making & baking the dough. It's very hard to find pizza for $2 a slice these days.

EDIT: They've now raised the price for $2 a slice :/
This is some very delicious pizza. It was the… Read more »
This tiny unassuming pizza joint serves up one of the best slices of cheese pizza in the city, imho. They don't offer much more than cheese pizza and soda, so if ya want salad pizza or pasta or just about anything that isn't a slice of cheese pizza then keep walkin. There's enough turnover that you're guaranteed a fresh hot slice any time of the day. Oh and it's dirt cheap! Places like this are one of the reasons I love this city.
I don't know why everyone raves about this pizza. It's your average, at best, around the corner pizzeria. The crust is too thick. The cheese is chewy and not flavorful. The joint itself is tiny, not particularly clean. It is, in fact, cheap. But I'd rather pay an extra dollar or two for a more satisfying slice.
The perfect balance of sauce and cheese on a warm thin crust and only $1.75. A great place to step in for a quick slice. The only have cheese slices but it appears you can order other stuff from the menu, but why bother.
I use to go to Baruch college back in 2000, this was the only place I miss the most from NYC, now I'm stuck here in Los Angeles, I can't find a slice closest to Frank's. I cry every day for just one more bite of plain cheese slice. I survived NYC b/c of Franks, I hope to retire and someday by going back to Franks complete my life journey. Though from the looks the place might not be much, but the taste brings back a flood of memories. Oh Franks how I miss thee. TT here I wipe my sad tears cause I didn't have Franks for over 5 years now. I plan my next east Coast trip around Frank's, See a musical then Franks. Go meet friends at Franks, Central Park, Franks to go. haha. Believe it or not Its the only best thing I cherish from my short time in NYC. miss you Frank's don't ever change. I'll hopefully be coming back soon and we'll have our delicious reunion. Yum
Frank's is my type of slice. I graduated and I'll still schlep all the way from work to there to grab a slice once in a while. I don't need no fancy toppings because a regular plain slice does the job. It has a good amount of classic tomato sauce (not overly twiddle with) and cheese on. One slice is not enough. Gotta do the deux. For you heavy appetite, you can order as you pack it in. This way it's fresh and hot!
I tried the pizza once. I didn't even finish my slice. I wasn't into it.
One day on my way to the subway I was walking by Franks and I saw a guy behind the counter put his hand in his pants, then put his hand back in the dough. Crotch pizza? No thanks.
I frequented this place mainly because of the location when I stayed in the SVA dorms; it is right around the corner. So convenient and oh so good. What is it? For me it is the sauce. And it's so cheap. I used to be in and out of there in under 20 seconds. The best part is, all you have to do is walk in and say "slice" or just point, because I am pretty sure I only ever saw one type of pizza out at all times. There is a certain power in not having to make a decision and saying so few words (or none at all) that make the resulting slice so rewarding.
only ever gotten a cheese slice here, but i've done it dozens of times, they don't even have to heat it up, son!!
if someone doesn't like Frank's, just say,
"wachong witchu?"
This is the cheapest pizza in Manhattan at $1.75 per slice. The owners, a husband and wife team, are extremely nice and friendly people. You cannot beat this deal.
