Man, you'd be silly to go anywhere else.  A great cut at a great price with the hot towel and straight-edge treatment to top it off.  Awesome.

After years of having my friend tell me I must start going to Frank's and me resisting, I finally relented after my old barber shop closed down.  Well, I must say that I'm glad that I finally gave it a try.  The  place itself is cool inside, playing good music and looking good.  The barber (I had Mr. B) did a great job and I'm sure the others do too.  The hot towel massage thing on the back of your head before the back neck shave was a nice addition.  And lastly, and most importantly, the absurdly cute receptionist puts the cherry on top.  She is incredible.  All make it worth the price, which is a bit more than my old haircut ($28 for me, but it ranges depending on what you get done).

FYI, they do accept credit cards but you have to tip in cash.

I've been going to Brendan (Mr. Bee) since 2004 and his days at Astor Place Barber Shop.  i've since followed him to Frank's when he was propositioned by Frank 151's owners to helm their startup barber shop/cap retailer/hangout joint.  The man is ridiculously talented at a fade (or freestyling some crazy shit on the side of your head) and i've probably referred about 15 or 20 people because he's consistent and efficient.  everyone is down to earth (including the hot girls they've got working the desk), the music is always different, and the artwork on the walls changes pretty frequently.  the hot towel/straight razor shave on your neck is icing on the cake.  if you want a consistently good guys' haircut without all the bullshit, small talk, and high prices of pretty much everywhere else in the city, then Frank's is the place to go.  Hands down.

I just have a question, can you go in to buy stuff, or do you need to get a haircut

Frank's Chop Shop is seriously the proverbial shizzle.  I cannot recommend Mr. Bee's work enough.  The shop oozes a hip vibe, and the custom New Era caps they sell are quite dank, as well.  Be sure to also pick up a gratis copy of Frank 151, the first magazine to ever spawn a barber shop-slash-hat store.

Really interesting joint: kinda hip hop, kinda rockabilly.  They publish their own literary magazine, sell their own line of caps and sell a Bialetti espresso maker with their logo on it.  The vibe is "enlightened macho".

I go here for a shave and to have my sideburns shaped into crazy points.  Both guys who have done this for me have been artists!  Since legal issues keep them from using a proper straight razor they have a fake straight razor that accepts disposable single edge blades.  Not quite a classic shave, but a great one nonetheless.  The hot towel is a nice touch.  For $15 I call that a deal.  Recommend it to any dude.

They describe themselves as catering to the "modern gentleman of leisure".  It's by appointment only.  Worth the trip.  It's a relatively inexpensive indulgence that leaves you looking great.

Is there such a thing as a must-do on a trip to New York for the jaded 20something jet-setter? Yes, and getting a hot shave at Frank's Chop Shop be thy name. Indulgence and usefulness rarely wed this blissfully.

You can get your hair did, then go buy yourself a phat hat for the noggin and a matching shirt.  My boyfriend is OBSESSED.  They have some nice photos up of hair salons and people's hair.  They can do fades, designs, rockabilly steez, any thing you want.  They are artistes.  Their prices are also really good.  I'm waiting for them to open up something a little more catered to the ladies...
