FDR is covered in goose feces, pockmarked, and inexplicably muddy. Some of the natural hazards include weeds that stand about 10' tall, blocking your view of the green. You could sink a shot in the hole, or your ball could go soaring over the fence and through the windshield of a passing car. Unless your intimately familiar with the course, it's anybody's guess.

The fairways appear to have fault lines and, in some spots, you might guess landmines were recently detonated. When you tee off, keep an eye on your golfball. There's a good shot it could get lost amid the field of white goose feathers. In many ways, it is a complete disaster. Yet, it is still worth at least three stars.

You get what you pay for. FDR is very affordable and, if you're a novice or on a tight budget, this will mean more to you than aesthetics and clean cleats. The golf course is also centrally located in South Philly. It's easy to get here and not terribly difficult to find a tee time.

You should be able to overlook the course's faults when you consider its conveniences.

FDR offers a few things where many up-scale courses fall short.  FDR has a driving range which accommodates about 20.  It also has a chipping green with two sand traps and a large putting practice green.  I live in center city and have found that anyone (who of course respects the course) will have no issues to hone their skills for free for the chipping and putting green.   The golden rule regarding FDR is to play somewhere else if there has been a significant amount of rain in the last 3 days.  The front 9 and holes 10, 11 & 17 will be muddy to the point that a nice drive may roll only a few yards past where it first landed.   A high iron shot may end up stuck in the mud.   At least 60% of the course does not drain well.  This being said the course has merits and without giving a hole by hole critique it has been for many the first course they have played and will keep coming back for convenience,

I typically play at exclusive country clubs because my work is picking up the tab.  When I venture out on my own and pay my greens-fees, FDR is my course of choice.  Not just because its close to my house but its pretty good overall.  Maybe I like it because I am a novice and the wide open fairways benefit my game and reduce the number of lost balls.  There are some water hazards to navigate but I guess not a ton.
I give it four stars for the conditions, we went last Friday and expected after the sweltering summer heat to be playing on straw and the conditions were pretty favorable.  You definitely get what you pay for but I would rather have a little less frills for $16 than a 5 star resort for $2,000 a foursome.

FDR, why do you hate me?

I came here on Sat with someone who had never been, and wished I had suggested somewhere else.

At 5pm, they were out of balls.  The ever friendly folks working warned me that they were low on balls, and didn't charge me for my tokens, which was nice.

Then there were no buckets by the machine.  So I wandered down to the tees to fetch a bucket.  Which I ended up not needing bc when I put in my token, I got 2 balls.  Sigh.

Revised suggestion:  When you call to verify that they are not closed due to weather, flooding, or an outing, also ask if the range is up and running before you drive over here.

This is a great course for the price. It is also usually easy to get a tee time here. You can get it the day before if you want to pick your time or the day of and you might have to be flexible. We were there one time and they were running behind a bit so they gave us free buckets of balls and we went to the range.

It is a wide open course with the exception of a few holes. If you have a new driver...or trouble controlling your drive, this would be a good course for you. There are few trees and only a handful of water hazards. Hole 4 is a bit difficult in my opinion becuase you can't see where you're trying to go if you are a first time player.

All in all, great bang for your buck!

FDR is one of the five city golf courses in Philadelphia, and is the closest to the Center City area. It's been around since 1940, and for an a public golf course that is almost 70 years old, it's a decent enough course for those who want to play 9 holes or a full 18.

FDR is great if you just want to get out and sharpen some of your game--it's a relatively flat course that does not offer many challenges, as it is wide open with very few of tree-lined fairways. Sometimes you can even find yourself playing a hole from a fairway of a neighboring hole. This is great if you have a nasty slice or just don't get out much during the year.

The course is not in top condition, but is not terrible for a city golf course--some holes are better than others. The price is fairly cheap, around $13 for 9 holes or $25 for 18 holes. It's a decent bargain for those just looking to practice their game. The course also has a driving range and putting green if you just want to practice without going out on the course.

With the need to remove a few cobwebs from my swing, I was actually in search of a driving range close to Center City and found it at FDR (which I've learned not too many people know about). Don't expect fancy. Don't expect astro turf with rubber tees. Expect grass/dirt and BYO tees.

For me, a couple of buckets of balls and some space to hit towards is all i wanted. This is where i found it without having to travel a great distance.
