I visited this little place on a whim, during a drive from Austin to Houston. What a discovery! If you enjoy traditional Czech/German food or not, you can probably find a hot dog to appreciate here.
I had a regular frank with chili and cheese, with a side of baked beans and a side of sauerkraut. I also tried a bowl of chili on its own. The chili was good. The sauerkraut was good. The cheese wasn't so good, though. It was that liquid kind of cheese that they serve on nachos at high school football games. However, I don't count that as too many points against them because they did warn me that it was "creamy cheese." And they do offer regular grated cheese, if you request it.
The menu also includes interesting variations such as: bratwurst, knockwurst, burgers, bacon and cheese frank, fire frank (spicy!), Chicago frank, Italian frank, and Greek frank (with cucumbers, feta cheese, and sour cream sauce).
Frank 'n Stein also earn points for serving some Texas beers and local wines from the Lehm Berg Winery. And I loved the fact that the drinks came in frosted steins.
This place is small and cozy. You can see the kitchen from any seat in the house. And the couple that own the place are Texas friendly. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys discovering small local culinary treasures. :) -

Great little place to stop on the way from one tiny Texas town to another. You gotta love a joint that so completely understands how messy a good dog can be that they just put big old rolls of paper towels on the tables - no sissy napkins here, pal.
The restroom is a special treat, with a larger-than-life cutout of the Frankenstein monster himself, a cartoon bubble over his head reading "WELCOME TO MY LAVATORY."
You can find just about any kind of dog you want on the menu, and if you don't find what you're looking for, just ask - they'll fix it up for you anyway if they have the ingredients. There are also burgers and other options on the menu, but you'd be missing the point if you didn't order a frank and a frosty stein.
Sign up for their "frequent frank" card and make this a regular stop in your travels. Visit with the bikers and the high school kids who both hang out there. Enjoy watching the couple who owns the place drive each other crazy. Frank-n-Stein is just one of the many, many reasons I love small town Texas. -

Sadly this placed closed down several months ago. I miss my Chicago style dog that you could get loaded several different ways!
