Everytime I come here I am reminded what a phenomenal place this is.

The reviews speak for themselves.  It is probably my favorite restaurant in all of North Beach.  Family owned, friendly, and fabulous every time. Whether you are a big group of 8 or here on a dinner date - it's a bit romantic with a completely chill atmosphere.

More importantly the food will not disappoint you. When they say everything is good is not just a cop out, it's the truth. Can't decide? Just close our eyes, spin in a circle 5 times and point to something. It'll be the best choice you ever made.

A very cozy, warm, and friendly place that serves rock solid dishes.  Upon entering, we were greeted by several people... all of whom  were very friendly.

We opted for grilled vegetables, chicken parmesan, veal parmesan, and ravioli with mushroom sauce.  The grilled vegetables were among the best I've had.  Not overly oily and overcooked as are commonly found at other places.  The parmesan dishes had a unique and delicious sauce that seemed like a blend between traditional tomato sauce and a more creamy cheese.  The ravioli were cooked just right and smothered in a delicious but rather heavy and rich cream sauce.  This dish would make a better side dish than entree due to its heaviness.

All in all a good experience and a place worth revisiting.  3 1/2 stars.

Franchino is a great family run place and a great choice if you're looking for Italian food in North Beach.  The service is great and the food is great.  My bf loves their gnocchi and I've liked everything I've gotten.  The prices are very reasonable.  Try the chocolate cannoli, it's awesome.  Great wine selection as well.

Cons: seating is tight, but it's a pretty small place.

Food here was very good.  But the table seating/reservation system was awkward at best and very cramped once we sat down.  Menu was good but nothing to knock your socks off.  We all had traditional dishes.  Waitresses were very good - helpful and attentive.  It was worth coming to once.  But probably won't be rushing back here.

I love this restaurant! The food here is as good as East Coast italian food. There aren't many places like this on the West Coast. The customer service is great too. The owner himself even hailed a cab for us after dinner!

I'll be honest, Franchino wasn't my first choice; it wasn't even my second or third. It had nothing to do with the food or reviews, it had to do to its proximity to Bi-Rite (yes, I admit I have a problem). Despite missing out on a Bi-Rite trifecta, I'm glad we stumbled upon this place.

The restaurant is is small and narrow, but not to the point of feeling cramped. I was fortunate to avoid the wait many have described, but that's not to say the place was empty. On a Thursday evening, there was a steady stream of people dining - I recommend reservations.

My colleague had done a little homework on the place and knew she wanted to try their italian sausage. They were extremely accommodating when she tweaked her order slightly. I, on the other hand, hadn't any research aside from venue and was overwhelmed by the long list of pasta choices, eventually settling on the linguine con vongole with red sauce.

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and cleaned my plate. The sauce was extremely flavorful and the dish loaded with clams. Not being able to store leftovers and being notorious for overindulging on pasta, I was pleased that portions were generous without being gluttonous.

Service was friendly and efficient. Throughout our dinner one server and a woman (I suspect the owner's wife) attended to us. The owner's wife was friendly, funny and cute; she reminded me of a grandmother trying to stuff us silly. When my colleague ordered the tiramisu, she brought two spoons despite my protests. When she learned I hadn't tried it (tiramisu just isn't my bag), she playfully scolded me. For what it's worth, my colleague gushed about the tiramisu.

Franchino was a nice little surprise; good food, good people, good prices. I would definitely return next time I'm in town. I wish I knew about this place years ago, when I stopped into the over-hyped Stinking Rose a few doors down!

+ okay bread with olive oil and vinegar (though this should be a given at any good Italian restaurant)
+ the calm appetizers were good

    - the owners (i think - daughter and wife) weren't very friendly, but the husband was very quirky and cute
    - I disliked their award winning pesto gnocchi. It basically tasted like dough covered with pesto sauce.
    - They don't have fried calamari
    - I am really disappointed when a waitress / waiter can't make any recommendations. Saying "everything is good" is a cop out.

Best Italian I have had on the West Coast! Atmosphere was top-notch. Very authentic. Great service, lovely people? My only complaint? It's hard to get in ... you absolutely need a reservation, the place fills up quick. Parking is also not fun. But it's worth every penny!!! To die for (get the Ravoli Porcini and the Veal Parmigiana)

It's no wonder that by 7pm there is a line down the block to eat at Franchino. Be warned that this is not a place to dine three hours...it's an incredibly popular, small family-owned restaurant, i.e. they need to turn some tables!

Regardless, they were incredibly accommodating to our group of six even though by the time the entire party arrived we were an hour late for our reservation. Water glasses were constantly filled. They didn't try to give us the check until we asked for it. Service was friendly and efficient.

Onto the food - simply scrumptious! Linguine con vongole was perfectly executed and there was not an overcooked clam in sight. You must order the gnocchi with gorgonzola cream sauce as it was DIVINE. I also tried a friend's tomato cream sauce and another's red meat sauce and both were delicious as well.

Get here early, order some house wine with your meal, and you'll be swept away to foodie heaven.

I just went to Franchinos last night for the first time and loved it. We went in because I have passed by it several times and it looked, and smelled very good with a huge menu posted outside.
When we got to the entrance we were greeted by Franchino himself!  He has an awesome attitude and is very friendly, and said to my group  at the front door with a thick italian accent, " Come in to my restaurant, I promise you will love it. Listen I will tell you what, if it is not to your satisfaction then dinner is on me" -Franchino.

I ordered the new york steak with a side of pasta with meat sauce, believe me- it was perfect, couldnt have asked for more. Pretty neat that waitresses are Franchinos wife and two daughters. Overall, a  great Italian family owned it restaurant, and all at a decent price. I will have to make Franchinos one of my regular places to eat.

My group of friends and I came on Saturday before a marathon to carb-load. No tables were available and the owner told me that he'll get us a table (group of six) as soon as he could. He wouldn't give me an estimate of how long the wait would be. I had to talk to him several times to try to get an idea of the situation. He was charming though, in his heavy Italian accent.

I ordered the pasta pescatore and pesto linguini to go for my boyfriend. My pasta was loaded with clams, mussels, fish and two prawns. The sauce was exactly like the tomato sauce that I had in Italy, it had more oil, but had a rich and complex flavor. I could definitely tell that the sauce was freshly made and with care. The pasta was just a tad overcooked though. I certainly want to come back and try their risottos.

The place is small and family ran, and it shows. The staff speak Italian to one another and they obviously take pride in the food. Certainly worth a try amidst the tourist traps in the area.

    4 stars for the food
    5 stars for the pasta
    1 star for the service

Yes, the pasta here is perfection. The gnocchi is the best I've ever had, tender and flavorful (I usually don't even like gnocchi). The fettuccine with prosciutto & mushrooms was also excellent. I tasted 3 sauces - pesto, cream and tomato - and they were all out of this world. Our appetizers - a caprese salad and grilled vegetable antipasto - left more to be desired, though.

I probably would have rated this 5 stars if not for the owner. I don't know how they treat people in Italy, but I've never been treated so poorly. We waited 30 minutes for a table of 4 (they told us it would be 10 minutes). Just as a table was coming up, 3 people arrived and chatted up the owner - he took a look at us, thought about it, and then gave them our table. Without even acknowledging it or explaining it to us. Normally we would have left, but we were too hungry, and 5 minutes later we were seated - by someone else. The owner completely avoided us for the whole meal. When we got our check, the guy who seated us said he could tell we were upset, but that "we take care of the locals here". Well guess what? I'm a local too. And the people you screwed us over for shared a few dishes and drank water while we ordered over 2 plates each and a bottle of wine. Bad, bad policy.

We went here because we couldn't get a reservation at Sotte Mare. The clams were great, but my Choppino was average. My husband did not like his chicken. I tasted it and it was a bit overcooked.

The decor is casual and the restaurant has a cozy air of mom and pop restaurants. The price is super reasonable and they give you loads of food. I might go back for the comfort.

As an Italian, I feel like my opinion of this restaurant may weigh a little heavier than others...

This place is fantastic! My dad stumbled upon it while driving through San Fran on business and we have been here every time we are in town. Family owned by the cutest little family ever for almost 30 years. The food is very delicious and authentic.

They have excellent chicken Parmesan that they serve with either the veggie of the day or the pasta of the day. Their sauce is amazing (and I am super picky with my sauces, trust me). Everyone else loved their dishes too-- we plan on coming for dinner again during our week stay here.

I highly recommend! I know the Stinking Rose is super close and this place may seem small, but it's amazing and you are crazy not to try it.

A local family run Italian eatery catering to the local crowd. May take a little while for them to acknowledge you when you walk in if they don't recognize you. This didn't bother us as we understood the dynamics.

The rating is about the food which was all ok, bur rather ordinary. We tried the homemade minestrone and the ravioli porcini which was filling and tasted fine. Price was reasonable $24.85 before tip.

Food is good. Not great. Family running and experience is awesome. People complain about the wait or reservation issues. Then yelp how they find a great place close by that was no wait at all. No wait among places that have a line should tell you something. This place is a great experience with good food. I say 4 star food 5 star for owners / staff.

Update. The owner guy is too macho and rude to his wife and kid. Stopped going due to him. He can really rub you wrong. The wife and daughter are awesome.

Two doors down from the stinking rose, it could not be a more different experience. Far far away from tourist traps and the Wharf, here's a little restaurant operated through the ages. Wife and husband prepare a nice dining experience, and it's cute to see how much the son (who's often around) actually resembles both from the 30yo pictures on the walls.

Food-wise, it was very good. Not by any stretch the best Italian food I've had (e.g. the mantticotti had a very blend tomato sauce) but I was happy especially about the way the pasta was cooked. In the end, wine was cheap, dinner was good, and we left smiling.

Went back here a couple weeks ago, super excited to go since I'm a huge fan of the ravioli. Something was different about it, though - it was much spicier than before. We were wondering if sausage had been added to the meat in the ravioli? Sadly, I'm not as big a fan of the newer version.

I usually use Yelp to find a restaurant but tonight I decided to just walk up Columbus and see what I stumbled upon figuring I didn't have a reservation.  Let me tell you that was the best decision I have made in a long time after finding Franchino!

We started with a sampler appetizer which was DELICIOUS.  It had a little bit of everything and each bite seemed better than the last.  My two favorites on the sampler were eggplant and I believe goat cheese as well as the prosciutto and melone.  Bruschetta was really good too.  It was all good - I may as well name everything on the sampler!

For dinner I had the homemade ravioli with ragu and my friend had the carbonara.  Each were fabulous.  The ravioli literally felt like silk and melted in my mouth.  I was so full that my friend finished my plate after clearing his own because mine was just that good.

We were too full for dessert.  In addition to the great food the servers were absolute dolls.  They were the daughters of the owners who were out of town for the first time celebrating their 35th anniversary.  Well the owner should trust their kids because it was incredible despite their absence!

Cheers to Franchino and I'll definitely be back!

Very good flavorful authentic Italian food! I love that its still a family ran restaurant. I would definitely recommend ordering the seafood marinara dish (they have it with or without pasta) and if you enjoy pesto, they have a really good chicken pesto linguini dish. They have a large selection of pasta dishes and the few that my boyfriend and I have tried have all been delicious!

One thing that I was a little disappointed by was their tiramisu. I had high expectations given its suppose to be an authentic italian restaurant but their tiramisu was just average, and it wasn't made in the traditional way that tiramisu is made with the alternating layers of lady fingers/mascarpone-cream mix/ cocoa power. I thought that Mona Lisa #3 (which is near Franchino) had a much better tiramisu than Franchino's.

I had a long, thorough review written when I accidently cleared the screen and couldn't get it back.  Anyway, the food and overall experience was so above-and-beyond disappointing.  The food was so blah- mediocre would be a compliment. It tasted like cafeteria food, except that I got about twice as much when I was 10 years old.  Which brings me to thumbs down #2:  the portions were a joke, how little we got.   Three tiny, thin slices of chicken on a plate each.  Entree served. The waitress was rude.   I can say the owner was very friendly.  There were plenty of open tables so we got seated immediately.  The food came very quickly (but then again, it tasted like it was put together in a minute).  My husband and I felt violated for how much we paid for such a lousy and tiny meal.  JUST.SO.BAD.

On a positive ntoe, this has been one of those one-day-you'll-laugh-about-it experiences that we will always remember about our time living in San Francisco.

First experience here tonight with a group of 6 friends, many from out of town, and don't plan on returning, with a plethora of options in the vicinity.

I had called a few weeks ago to make reservations for group of 6 @ 5:30pm.  Lady answered with a friendly tone and was happy to take my name down.

However, tonight, I arrived to get a table a few minutes before 5:30pm, restaurant was still empty with 2-3 tables occupied only.   My party of 5 was present with 1 friend just finishing up parking.  The server came to our table and gave us an attitude that she normally doesnt seat a party until every single one is present.  I was quick to respond that I did make reservations for 5:30 for our group.  No form of apology or embarrasment expressed.   This set the tone for the evening, we were peeved.

Luckily enough, our pasta was presentable and we all seemed to enjoy our plate of carbs.

Given the first impression of service and the rude welcoming, I will certainly not return to give them business.

    Sad to say.

I've reviewed Franchino before--this is another place I always visit when I am in SF.  I'm glad to say that the place is as good as ever.  Mr. Franchino and Mama Josephine keep the place feeling as much like a family gathering as possible.  It's the kind of place where everyone is so comfortable that conversations among strangers always occur.

This time I ate light--melon and prosciutto, homemade soup, and Mama J's panna cotta--the best dessert in SF.  I even talked Josephine into giving me a mini-lesson on successful panna cotta--I felt like Guy Fieri.

The food here is delicious, yes.  But the Franchino family (the daughters are waitresses) is a North Beach treasure.

Not knowing where or what to eat one night, my friend and I decided to just choose a destination. He suggested North Beach, and I thought perfect. A walk through North Beach is always nice on occasion.

After parking, I got onto Mobile Yelp and narrowed down my options to a few, with Franchino being one of them. After checking out the other place, we decided to check out Franchino, which I liked better cause it had that family restaurant feel to it.

The service here is friendly, and food is solid. We ordered the Smoked Salmon Appetizer, Fettucini Franchino, and Spaghetti Carbonara. Smoked Salmon Appetizer was good and plentiful - I liked that they decorated the top of the thinly sliced salmon with onions, bell peppers. It added a very colorful spread to the top of the light orange colored salmon.

Both pasta dishes were delicious and solid - fresh and delicious pasta, and sauces were simple yet very tasty. I finished my entire pasta dish! I was pretty full 3/4 through it, but I just couldn't stop...

Prices aren't too bad here, and I would definitely recommend Franchino if you plan to dine in the North Beach area.

A reliably good, cozy meal -- this was our third visit to Franchino with friends/family visiting from out of town, and it has been a great experience every time. As Yelp might lead you to believe, this is one of the best options on the fun but otherwise touristy and mediocre main stretch of North Beach, and we would agree.

The long menu was slightly overwhelming, but we asked our waitress to narrow it down to their 3 best pasta dishes, of which we ordered 2, and they were in fact very very good.

I stopped by this cozy family Italian restaurant on a week night with a few companions. Given its high volume of reviews and generally high rating, I had high expectations. The place certainly felt like a family restaurant with that sort of charm and the menu prices/items seemed in line with other places in North Beach. We didn't feel particularly welcomed but it seems that the owner or dad wasn't around to greet us like the other yelpers so that could have been the reason.

When we asked what the waitress would recommend, she directed our attention to the left side of the menu and didn't mention a single non-pasta item, which wasn't a great start for a group of hungry carnivores. We all ended up going with various pastas.

The pesto gnocchi came highly recommended but was probably the only disappointment. It felt a little one noted and plain. The dough itself was well cooked so I suppose the complaint is really directed at the overall dish.

The seafood pasta was probably the best dish we tried and I would consider getting it if I came back.

All in all, I thought it was an okay place but was a little disappointed given the other reviews.

Amazing little family owned establishment opened in the 1970s. My friends and I came in very early before they were officially opened. However, the owner was very welcoming and took great care of us. The food here is amazing and I ordered the Cannelloni and my friend had a lasagna and tiramisu for dessert .

i guess you shouldn't expect much from an touristy italian restaurant smack dab in the middle of columbus street.

first of all the seating system is strange, they don't necessarily honor reservations ahead of people who just show up.  the owner, the old guy, just lets people duke it out amongst themselves and has a bit of  'you should be lucky to dine here' attitude.  it's amusing but can be easily off putting.

the food is average to below average.  the flavors were very dull and did not taste fresh or home made.  my bruschetta was oily on stale-ish bread and my gnocchi in red sauce was bland.

the old guy sings in the middle of dinner and tries to get the restaurant to start clapping in rhythm for the heck of it.  at first it's funny, but then it reaches an awkward point where you just want to stop and finish and what the hell are we clapping for anyway?  especially when he starts it again 5 minutes later....

I'm a big fan of family-run businesses and this place was fantastic. I struggled a little bit with the menu choices as I am on a vegan diet for a month, but the risotto primavera was delicious and so was the garlicky spaghetti d'olivo (I'm not sure that's spelled right, but it'll still help you find it on the menu!).

The service was superb and friendly. The owners and their daughter were serving so it felt like we had joined their family for dinner in their home. I had an engaging conversation with each one of them at some point during our dinner.

As I said, the menu all looked delicious, but, since I am on my vegan diet, I was limited. However, my dinner partners were not and they raved about their dinners.

The only reason I could not give five stars here was because the by-the-glass wine selection was not very good wine (six choices, each $6.95 a glass) and the olive oil on the table was pretty low grade. If I wasn't so cheap, I would have sprung for one of the bottles of wine on their short but comprehensive-looking list.

Okay, a short comment about olive oil. I'm really picky about my olive oil at home and expect it to be at least as good, if not better, when I eat out. Many restaruants server cheap olive oil for dipping bread these days, and I think most serve Italian olive oil that comes in a bucket! The best olive oil is always fresh olive oil - and in California, that means local, Californian olive oil. The stuff imported from Italy can be 6 months or older and loses all of its peppery taste...but I'm ranting.

If you love enjoiying good Italian food in the company of a sweet, friendly Italian family, go say "hi" to Franchino for me.

Realistically, this was more of 3.5 for me.

We came here during 4th of July weekend. Found the place solely based on yelp star-rating and number of $ (it has a pretty high yelp rating, so I was expecting some delish food). We walked from Bay street and Mason to avoid the parking disaster that is North Beach. Good call.

We walked past a lot of good looking Italian joints on the way, this literally was the last one. After passing a ton of fancy ones that were packed and smelled delicious, I joked to my friend that we probably chose the crappiest one that would be empty and cheaply decorated. I wasn't half-off... The decor wasn't amazing or as updated and new as others we'd passed, but it had a homey feel and the people were nice.

An older Italian man greeted us outside and ushered us in. He was cheerful and welcoming and lighthearted. He gave us a very small table in a tight corner. It was extremely hot inside. This is a family place and you can tell that everyone who works there is immediate family. I like that in a place. All of the servers were uber-friendly and our food came REALLY quick and piping hot.

We had 2 Peronis, the Chicken Parmagiana with a penne of sorts, and Risotto Primavera with the tomato sauce. Total bill after tip: ~$56. The food was good, but not amazing. Something about the vegetables in the primavera seemed frozen to me, but it might have just been the cut. They didn't taste frozen and I definitely cleaned my plate. I didn't taste the chicken parmagiana, but it was different looking than I am used to. It seemed really gooey on top and completely drenched in sauce. My friend had nothing bad to say though.

I would have liked to try the meat raviolis in the mushroom sauce, or the risotto with mushrooms in a cream sauce (those two menu items are just off the top of my head, but I remember seeing things like that and being interested).

Overall, very decent. Probably wouldn't return again for a while, just because of the sheer multitude of Italian restaurants in the area that I would want to try before going back there a second time.
