Jacksonville, FL
Went for breakfast on a sunday morning and loved the experience. Sat at the bar because there isnt much seating. The place is small, a narrow spot between shops in avondale. Great service from all employees. Decor was cool and matched the atmosphere.
Can't wait to go back and try something else :) -

We came here for breakfast on a Friday morning. We got there just before the crowds did, so we got seated right away. It has a cool, unique ambience with a nice local feel. It was nice that my brother (who works the night shift) was able to get "dinner" while we got breakfast.
The food was good, though not outstanding. I had the Greek omelet (Spinach, feta, tomato, and red onion). It came with a biscuit and a choice of fruit or home fries. I chose fruit, expceting it to be a little fruit salad. It turned out to be just a small bowl of sliced bananas, which I thought was kind of odd. The biscuit was disappointing to me, I guess I was expecting a buttery, salty biscuit (like Popeye's or The Cracker Barrel) but it was kind of bland. The omelet was good.
Coffee was very good. Service was decent, though toward the end of our meal I did feel a little rushed by the waitress. I guess she was trying to move us through because of the line forming out the door.
Overall, nice little place. Would go again, but not necessarily my first choice. -

There's no better place to go for a fantastic breakfast with friends on the weekends. Killer prices, an awesome staff, rockin' music and the best waffles you ever had make The Fox my absolute fave.
Coming from much larger cities, I was really disappointed that Jacksonville was really short on diners to hit up for a late-night feast or a hungover brunch. But I love The Fox so much, I don't even care anymore. It's about the only place you can get breakfast in town and have a fighting chance of a kid-free atmosphere. The only thing that would make this place better is to serve alcohol and be open 24 hours (or at least late night).
If you go during peak hours (10-1 on weekends), you might expect to wait 5 or 10 minutes for a table, but it's worth it. Highly recommended. -

Really great atmosphere and excellent service. I go here whenever I can. I try to stick to weekdays because weekends can definitely get busy and there isn't much seating.

I realize that this is a popular hangout for this part of Jacksonville. It really wasn't anything to write home about. The fool and service were ok.

This is a trendy little place with real character, and great breakfast. The pancakes, and waffles are unbelievable. Light, crispy, and yum-my.
This is written a few weeks since my last visit, and thinking about it is making my mouth water.
The portions, quality, and price make this place a must try. The only reason they get a 4-star is from the last visit. I have a feeling that something ticked off the staff, because a few of them were kind of pissy. Our waitress included. Fortunately, the previous 2 visits showed a great staff with the customer in mind. Again, our waitress included.
Besides that one oops! this place is a 5-star. -

This is the place to go for a diner-style breakfast or lunch in Riverside. The food, service, and prices are great and the atmosphere is fun!

Clean, great service, great value. No need to take up a lot of space, owner is there to great you at the door, free coffee while you wait outside.

Don't be fooled by the shoddy exterior/missing 'A' in 'REST_URANT'! If my lunch crew cuts out on me, I'm going to The Fox. Not much space for larger parties, but man, those diner booths can be entertaining. Oh, and the food is consistently good.
Today the manager took time out of his busy lunch rush to point out/laugh at the ridiculous couple riding together on a motorcycle in matching head-to-toe light denim and white helmets "like a couple of stormtroopers". Another time we took care in splicing a local lawyer's magnet listing services, including "DOG ATTACKS". He saved it for later. I can only imagine similar conversations led to the quirky collages and pastiche all over the walls.
The food is diner fare done well - prompt and accurate. Breakfast all day, and a good selection of hot/cold sandwiches. The turkey gravy is delicious, just don't expect to be able to ward off a food coma after eating the chicken fried steak.
Kids profess their love of The Fox in crayon drawings on the wall - one says "THE FOX VS. THE COOL MOOSE...FOX WINS!" Agreed, young buck. -

Jacksonville, FL
Good quick food. In the 5 years I've been coming here they have NEVER messed up an order. NEVER. That in itself is impressive.
The menu is pretty basic but then again they don't try to be something they are not either. They are a diner that serves basic diner fare. My personal favorites are the Tropical Omelette for breakfast and the Rueben for lunch.
If you like coffee, they offer a great cup of coffee. It's nothing gourmet. Just locally roasted Martin's Coffee... but very tasty.
the only negative about this place is that it is not good for larger parties to sit together. The tables max out at 5 (if you add a folding chair in the aisle). if you get there before the rush, you have a chance at maybe sitting in back to back booths. It has never really been a problem for me, but can see where it can get a little tight. -

Good, quick food! I usually got take out from this place when I worked down the street, and while nothing stood out a ton, it was always just what I said- good and quick!! Also, consistent.

I can remember a few months ago and our first attempt to eat here and ending up across the street at The Brick by mistake. I also remember sitting there and looking across the street and asking, "what are all those people lining up for over there?" Then I saw it was The Fox. I told my LDC, "we're in the wrong place". No wonder there was no wait.
But this weekend we got it right, I say facetiously. As we stood, 8th in line for our chance to be seated, I looked across the street at the empty Brick Restaurant and asked, "what is it about The Fox that makes people line up here like this?" I studied the crowd, both coming and going. I studied the chatter amongst the 18 to 30 year old group around us. My conclusion? They consider themselves chic for attending this weekend morning happening. How lucky for the owners of The Fox having become the provider of a fad. I was just hoping the food and service equaled all the hype.
I ordered the pancake breakfast - 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 3 bacon and home fries. The LDC ordered the French Toast breakfast - scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, and home fries.
3 Stars - Pancakes - Not very light or fluffy but an interesting vanilla cake taste.
2 Stars - Bacon - Was not hot, was tough to bite, tasted like it was precooked, not to order.
4 Stars - Eggs - Very rich yellow yokes, great taste, cooked scrambled and over easy, were prefect.
2 Stars - Home Fries - Not to my liking. They are deep fried wedge cut potatoes. I prefer fine chopped and grilled.
3 Stars - French Toast - LDC said it was okay.
2.5 Stars - Turkey Sausage - LDC said it tasted like hot dog.
4 Stars - Service - Waitress was friendly, professional, and attentive.
4 Stars - Seater and Greeter - Very friendly, good job dude.
As far as I can tell, The Fox is just another choke and puke, just another greasy spoon, just another diner. I was truly hoping it might be similar to Metro, something unique. It must have been the hype, or the exceeding expectation but we were not impressed. The crowds that line up here in abundance every weekend must be yearning for that neighborhood, good feeling thing. But if they think this is the best Avendale has to offer, all they need do is take a short walk across the street. -

I honestly dont understand the hype around this place. Besides that its an avondale mainstay, there isnt really anything worth shouting about here. The food is ok, but nothing exciting. Its overpriced for what you are getting and the service is normal, not great, just diner servers. SO WHAT. Personally I have had better food at The Cool Moose or even The Country Cabin.
Just a trendy place for indie kids to continue their snobbery. MEH. -

Thanks for the great find Yelp! I would have never found this place while passing through Jacksonville.
Located in a cool part of town, this place has it all if you're looking for a quick bite.
I got a bacon egg and cheese biscuit, which cost around $3. It came out in about 5 minutes and was delicious.
Very pleased! -

It's true. Everyone does love the Fox. It's your run of the mill diner in a lot of ways, and honestly, I can't really pinpoint what it about this place that really gets people's motors going, but it does. People really love the Fox!
The food is good and the servings are big. The food is really pretty standard. Salty, greasy, filling. But there is something in the small building's innards that is unique and sets this place apart.
The decor is old fashioned with a hipster touch. The booths are leather and the counter curves around the narrow kitchen [the exposed part at least]. It just looks like a fun place to sit and eat.
I'm not totally convinced that people don't love this place simply because people love this place. It's really good, but its a diner and it has what every diner has. The coffee is good. The food is flavorful. The prices are right.
The wait is long. But, it's worth it. -

Everyone likes the Fox. That's why there's a line out the door on weekends. The Fox is a perfect place to take out of town friends because the one-of-a-kind decor, awesome food, and diverse staff/patrons will fool them into thinking that Jacksonville is an exciting place.
Just kidding, Jacksonville's great. You'll observe an interesting cross-section of Jacksonville's residents eating at the Fox, from local politicians and businessmen to grungy young folks and normal families. How come? Because it's a go-to kinda place where you can relax, order some food, and not worry about it. The food'll come quickly, it'll be good, and it'll be inexpensive. Plus, the service is consistently fastidious. They run a tight ship.
If you want breakfast, go with the waffles or an omelette. The waffles are the star of the show there because they're basically perfect. Big, hot, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. They have a lot of neat omelette flavor combos available, and I like the Tropical and the Dougie.
They don't just do breakfast, though. I love the California Club, the regular Club, and the Larry David. Ask for potato salad on the side--it's creamy and amazing. The clubs are really, really big. Like, double decker big. The Larry David is a masterpiece of turkey, Russian dressing, and slaw. My boyfriend only orders this, ever.
So, yeah. The Fox has a lot of character and the food's really good. Most restaurants don't have any character and the food's bad, so if you haven't stopped by, you should go ahead and do that. -

The Fox is the solid diner that makes me want to get up in the morning for breakfast. You won't wonder if a meal will have shortened your life expectancy afterward so feel free to be adventurous with the menu.
The staff are efficient and hospitable, the service is wonderful and the food...well, it's all about the food and it keeps me going back.
Also a nice place to see who's who in Riverside/Avondale and other prominent good ole' boys. -

Pretty good diner food. This is one of those places that you can tell they care about the food. I went there for lunch, and I'll go back and try other things on the menu

Went in for a quick breakfast. Service was prompt and friendly, The food was good with the exception of the biscuits which I felt left a lot to be desired. Standard diner fare.

Jacksonville, FL
Fantastic neighborhood diner - blazing fast service and consistently good food from a sizable but well thought out menu. Comparing this place to The Cool Moose is a joke. I can wait in line, get a table, order and eat my meal at the Fox in the amount of time it takes the Cool Moose to make me a bagel sandwich. The cooks and servers all move with professionalism, while the vibe I get from the kids at The Moose is that they're just trying to get through their shift, performing as little actual work as possible, so that they can get to band practice.

This place combines 50's charm, fantastic service, and great prices. this is my go-to place for breakfast on Sundays. Apparently, the Riverside/Avondale neighbors feel likewise. If you get there after 9am (yes 9AM) on a Sunday, you will likely have to wait in line. The line moves pretty fast though so no worries! They have a great breakfast menu, including cheese grits (yay it's great to be home) and biscuits w/ sausage gravy. They also have a wonderful selection of breakfast omelets, named for the different neighborhood in the area. I highly recommend to tourists and locals alike.

Such a great place to simply grab a good breakfast or lunch. It really feels like everyone knows you when you come in the door. Skip the line and go straight to the bar!

Been here probably 3 times, and the only reason they get 2 stars is because of the atmosphere. The food is completely normal to boring. Nothing to get excited about and/or wait in the long lines for. You have to wait in line and stare at the other people eating silently wishing they would hurry up and pay. Hipsters will love it though.

You haven't had breakfast at the Fox? It's no wonder you are the way you are. You need to go soon -- you look like you really could use the Hawaii 5-0 (ham, onion and pineapple omelette, choice of grits, home fries or fruit, and biscuits or toast, served with one of those little umbrellas on the side). Seriously. Get a move on.

The breakfast was good, just a standard breakfast ,scrambled eggs, bacon, grits and coffee. The portions were generous and I left with a full tummy. The Fox has cute old fashioned diner atmosphere and good service. We could have lingered a little longer but it was beginning to get crowded. You can also purchase a Fox coffee mug if you want a souvenir.

The Fox does eggs right. I've only been in breakfast/brunch hours, so when I go to a place like this, the eggs are important. Anybody can slap some bacon together, but getting broken-yellow without crunchy grease-eggs is important to me. If you haven't been, check it out. Get there early and avoid crazy crowds.

Oh, The Fox... this is the best hole-in-the-wall joint in Jacksonville, located on the strip in Avondale. The breakfast and lunch fare are both amazing. I routinely grab a burger here; my current flame likes the club. The menu is formidable for such a place, so there's always an opportunity to try something new. I've been with kids, to whom the wait staff is especially attentive. It's definitely a place you have to hit.
It should be noted that they close after lunch. There is no dinner here. There is almost always a line out the door, but don't let that turn you away. It moves quickly. As mentioned in other reviews, the locals of the area definitely frequent the place. It gets five stars simply because it's such a cool place with nostalgia attached. Don't mistake that for a five-star restaurant--it is definitely not that! -

Great little independently owned diner! Service is friendly and the food is just what you expect from a spot like this. They don't overcook their eggs, and the pancakes are yum!

Jacksonville, FL
Food and service has always been pretty good. I'm always shocked that people will seriously wait outside the place in the heat or cold for a seat. Maybe I'm spoiled, but I will not wait for a table for simple breakfast or lunch fare. Personally I like Crazy Egg or Cool moose better (although the latter has been slipping lately). If you're at The Fox at a non-peak time, I would say give it a shot.

The Fox is an Avondale mainstay that offers good diner food. Is it worth waiting in line? Uh, no. So try out breakfast during the week-avoid the weekends.

I LOVE THE FOX!! I moved to Jacksonville about 6 years ago and found out about the fox about 3 years ago. I wish I knew about it long before. I have only had the breakfast here. The pancakes are to die for! The french toast os average. Tge inlets are great! The "honkey tonk" is fantastic as well as the "Ortega". The free coffee while waiting in ling is a good plus and meeting new people while waiting is always fun. The longest I've waited wad about 15-20 min but it's totally worth it. Also my 2 year old daughter loves it. The staff not only caters to us but pays a little extra attn to my daughter as well. This place is a must try fir everone!!!!

The service was ok. I got the French Toast Breakfast. I was kind of unimpressed because the French Toast definitely wasn't fresh, the eggs were a bit cold and looked kind of gray and over cooked. The server was nice, but I don't think I will be ordering the French Toast Breakfast anytime soon.

I like to go to the Fox for Saturday morning breakfasts. There's always a wait, but it generally moves pretty quickly. The interior decor is quirky and cute, and very diner-esque. The wait-staff, for the large part, is eclectic and "indie", and some of them can be downright rude, but it's strangely part of the charm. I highly recommend the sweet tea (I think they sweeten it with either honey or agave, and my boyfriend and I both agree it's a great sweet tea), and I always get the waffle when I go there..light and fluffy, with just a touch of powdered sugar and butter, topped with some maple syrup. Yum!!!!
