Thanks for the great find Yelp! I would have never found this place while passing through Jacksonville.
Located in a cool part of town, this place has it all if you're looking for a quick bite.
I got a bacon egg and cheese biscuit, which cost around $3. It came out in about 5 minutes and was delicious.
Very pleased!
I can remember a few months ago and our first attempt to eat here and ending up across the street at The Brick by mistake. I also remember sitting there and looking across the street and asking, "what are all those people lining up for over there?" Then I saw it was The Fox. I told my LDC, "we're in the wrong place". No wonder there was no wait.
But this weekend we got it right, I say facetiously. As we stood, 8th in line for our chance to be seated, I looked across the street at the empty Brick Restaurant and asked, "what is it about The Fox that makes people line up here like this?" I studied the crowd, both coming and going. I studied the chatter amongst the 18 to 30 year old group around us. My conclusion? They consider themselves chic for attending this weekend morning happening. How lucky for the owners of The Fox having become the provider of a fad. I was just hoping the food and service equaled all the hype.
I ordered the pancake breakfast - 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 3 bacon and home fries. The LDC ordered the French Toast breakfast - scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, and home fries.
3 Stars - Pancakes - Not very light or fluffy but an interesting vanilla cake taste.
2 Stars - Bacon - Was not hot, was tough to bite, tasted like it was precooked, not to order.
4 Stars - Eggs - Very rich yellow yokes, great taste, cooked scrambled and over easy, were prefect.
2 Stars - Home Fries - Not to my liking. They are deep fried wedge cut potatoes. I prefer fine chopped and grilled.
3 Stars - French Toast - LDC said it was okay.
2.5 Stars - Turkey Sausage - LDC said it tasted like hot dog.
4 Stars - Service - Waitress was friendly, professional, and attentive.
4 Stars - Seater and Greeter - Very friendly, good job dude.
As far as I can tell, The Fox is just another choke and puke, just another greasy spoon, just another diner. I was truly hoping it might be similar to Metro, something unique. It must have been the hype, or the exceeding expectation but we were not impressed. The crowds that line up here in abundance every weekend must be yearning for that neighborhood, good feeling thing. But if they think this is the best Avendale has to offer, all they need do is take a short walk across the street.
I honestly dont understand the hype around this place. Besides that its an avondale mainstay, there isnt really anything worth shouting about here. The food is ok, but nothing exciting. Its overpriced for what you are getting and the service is normal, not great, just diner servers. SO WHAT. Personally I have had better food at The Cool Moose or even The Country Cabin.
Just a trendy place for indie kids to continue their snobbery. MEH.
I like to go to the Fox for Saturday morning breakfasts. There's always a wait, but it generally moves pretty quickly. The interior decor is quirky and cute, and very diner-esque. The wait-staff, for the large part, is eclectic and "indie", and some of them can be downright rude, but it's strangely part of the charm. I highly recommend the sweet tea (I think they sweeten it with either honey or agave, and my boyfriend and I both agree it's a great sweet tea), and I always get the waffle when I go there..light and fluffy, with just a touch of powdered sugar and butter, topped with some maple syrup. Yum!!!!
The Fox is the solid diner that makes me want to get up in the morning for breakfast. You won't wonder if a meal will have shortened your life expectancy afterward so feel free to be adventurous with the menu.
The staff are efficient and hospitable, the service is wonderful and the food...well, it's all about the food and it keeps me going back.
Also a nice place to see who's who in Riverside/Avondale and other prominent good ole' boys.
Fantastic neighborhood diner - blazing fast service and consistently good food from a sizable but well thought out menu. Comparing this place to The Cool Moose is a joke. I can wait in line, get a table, order and eat my meal at the Fox in the amount of time it takes the Cool Moose to make me a bagel sandwich. The cooks and servers all move with professionalism, while the vibe I get from the kids at The Moose is that they're just trying to get through their shift, performing as little actual work as possible, so that they can get to band practice.
The Fox does eggs right. I've only been in breakfast/brunch hours, so when I go to a place like this, the eggs are important. Anybody can slap some bacon together, but getting broken-yellow without crunchy grease-eggs is important to me. If you haven't been, check it out. Get there early and avoid crazy crowds.
Oh, The Fox... this is the best hole-in-the-wall joint in Jacksonville, located on the strip in Avondale. The breakfast and lunch fare are both amazing. I routinely grab a burger here; my current flame likes the club. The menu is formidable for such a place, so there's always an opportunity to try something new. I've been with kids, to whom the wait staff is especially attentive. It's definitely a place you have to hit.
It should be noted that they close after lunch. There is no dinner here. There is almost always a line out the door, but don't let that turn you away. It moves quickly. As mentioned in other reviews, the locals of the area definitely frequent the place. It gets five stars simply because it's such a cool place with nostalgia attached. Don't mistake that for a five-star restaurant--it is definitely not that!
This place combines 50's charm, fantastic service, and great prices. this is my go-to place for breakfast on Sundays. Apparently, the Riverside/Avondale neighbors feel likewise. If you get there after 9am (yes 9AM) on a Sunday, you will likely have to wait in line. The line moves pretty fast though so no worries! They have a great breakfast menu, including cheese grits (yay it's great to be home) and biscuits w/ sausage gravy. They also have a wonderful selection of breakfast omelets, named for the different neighborhood in the area. I highly recommend to tourists and locals alike.
You haven't had breakfast at the Fox? It's no wonder you are the way you are. You need to go soon -- you look like you really could use the Hawaii 5-0 (ham, onion and pineapple omelette, choice of grits, home fries or fruit, and biscuits or toast, served with one of those little umbrellas on the side). Seriously. Get a move on.
I eat here every so often for lunch and its always a good atmosphere and great food. I really like the coyote burger although I think its going to be the death of me if I keep eating it everytime.
