What gets this LA girl walking half an hour from the Mission to SOMA every day when I'm in town for work, even if I'm lugging a 100 pound laptop? Only Four Barrel, baby. From the moment I wake up I look forward to my trips to Four Barrel, where the smiling hipsters behind the counter fill my cup with their rich, strongly caffeinated delicousness and fuel my power walk through the ghetto and to my office. Sometimes when I'm feeling really decadent I'll indulge in one of their banana chocolate chip scones, and figure I'll just pump my legs that much harder to burn the calories off.

The coffee's pretty reasonably priced, though the beans and the pastries are pretty pricey. It's still a great gift idea though for the coffee lovers in your life - I picked up a few bags for Christmas and they were (for the most part) a hit. Beware - the beans range from $16-20... quite a pretty penny!

One day I'll stop by when I'm not in a rush to get to work and enjoy their nice outdoor or indoor seating. I always envy those who can kick back in the mornings with their newspapers and cups o' joe while I'm hurrying on my way!

Cheers to one of my favorite local coffee spots - thanks for keeping me moving!

This place is very neat -- definitely a must-see in San Francisco. The coffee is great and if you tell the barista what flavors you like, they'll recommend a blend for you.

All of the coffee places in SF make me cringe every time I get Starbucks...

A perfect pick-me-up after getting yelled at by an obnoxious city driver:
    (1) kouign-amann, (1) Peeples Huckleberry donut, and (1) cup of Four Barrel Coffee while sitting outside in the afternoon sunlight.

The kouign-amann is the "almost a croissant but better" pastry. I'm getting the 1 with chocolate in it next time, darn totin'! It's flaky, super buttery, crunchy, and shaped like a galette but fluffier. I liked my fingers cleaned!

The Huckleberry donut was really good too - bits of the fruit inside, sweet and a bit gooey. Not sure if they're Dynamo Donuts but looked like something they'd put out.

The coffee was perrrrfect (simulation of the rolled "r" sound there). Dark but light in flavor, mild taste & smooth. The counter staff were really friendly & provided quick service...there's always a line here so that's appreciated.

Nice, clean, easy place to get coffee. Ample room for seating and a fairly good selection of coffee.

Ordered a cup of coffee - pretty good but i didn't see regular milk out so the soy didn't make it a perfect cup for me.

Bought 2 12oz bags of coffee beans. Pricey. Spent a total of about $34 for the 2 bags and cup of coffee.

Good selection of coffee, barista who was helping me was actually really nice, & the place seemed orderly and very nice. Will definitely come back if i'm in the area.

If you like drip coffee, go to Philz or Blue Bottle. If you love espresso, this is a true espresso bar!

The barista knew what she was doing.  My latte came out perfectly.  The foam was stiff enough to hold a design, and even better it could hold the raw sugar I usually add to my coffee.  That's good foam!

I was so impressed by the espresso machine that I inquired about it.  Apparently, the espresso machine was custom-built for Four Barrel.  So, there's nothing like it!

My only qualm was that the coffee could have been hotter.  It was warm, but I wanted it hot.  I like to sit and read with a coffee.  By the time I was done reading, the coffee was colder than I prefer.  The upside: no coffee granules/sediment on the bottom, so it's good to the last drop.

There are plenty of seats, for 2 people or 4 people.  But, the place seems to fill up quickly.  The set-up is good for a short stay, but I don't think it would be comfortable to study in for a prolonged period.

Why go to Starbucks when you have places like Blue Bottle, Philz and Four Barrel?  Good coffee.  Great service.  Delicious treats.  But get there early or your favorite goodie might be gone - they sell out fast.

Good coffee, fun atmosphere. Good spot in the mission, love the parklet outside.

Staff is super hipster + super helpful when picking out beans.  You can tell how passionate they are about their coffee, pretty cute!

Their coffee beans come in 12oz - 2 bags will run you about $32. Heads up.

Let me start by saying the decor is AMAZING! the restroom is awesome lol very hipster employees who aren't very friendly AT ALL!

I ordered a mocha  with an oatmeal and cranberry cookie. The mocha was alright, nothing special. The cookie was delicious though!

coming from LA I can't really be too harsh on judging the location, however, my boyfriend was wearing a LA hat (bad idea) and got harassed on the way out. We just laughed.

All in all if I knew that a mocha would have cost me $5- plus
the cookie $1.50 x 2 (for my boyfriend too) I would have
probably went to a coffee shop closer to the hotel I'm staying
    at.

Definitely a solid 2.5 stars, but I wouldn't round up.

After passing by here more than a handful of time, I finally came in to experience 4 barrel.  It's alright.  The employees here are pretty nice and I love the experience, which is why they got the 2 stars.  It's like they are demoing roasting all day, pretty cool, the seating isn't really up to par, with the tables too high from the bench, it's kind of hard to study, it's more of a conversational place.

The coffee::hmmmm, not sold.  Everytime I try out a new place, I judge the drip, 4 barrel for some reason taste watered down, like they took the espresso machine, used one portafiler and filled up a jug and sold it as drip. Gross.  I don't know, I can't explain it. It's just not the cup of coffee I would enjoy.

Sorry 4 Barrel, maybe next time.

On first sight it is impressive - the metal  fixtures outside, the wooden plank seating, the industrial feel and the buzz from hipsters/wannabe's hovering around. Think intelligentsia clone. But leaves more to be desired. There is no wifi, the seats are cutesy but not comfortable, they're pumping super loud and unidentifiable music and worst of all the coffee is watery. The expresso missed the mark too

Fantastic coffee - both made in-house or for buying beans to go.  The line can sometimes be long, but it moves fast.  or just pay $2 extra for a specially-made fresh cup of coffee, made with fancy filter machinery.
The pastries are amazing - they now carry B Patisserie pastries, except they don't advertise the supplier and I don't think enough people know.  These French (Breton) pastries are fantastic!
    Seating is a total gem.
Plenty of street parking thanks to parking meters!

In-house roasted beans, finished with crema so thick you could cut it with a butta' knife, and always served with a smile. Say what you will about hipsters, these lads and ladies are so sweet. I love how spacious Four Barrel is inside and I love the decor and I love the outdoor seating - sooo nice to sit outside when the weather is good like it was today. The warm afternoon sun was a pleasant surprise for January.

I just had a latte which came with pretty latte art - a leaf. I wonder if they have animals in the repertoire. Anyway, latte was delicious. Didn't have anything else yet so cannot comment on that, but I like the decor a lot.

I love coming to this place to get coffee. They have many single origin coffees and they are all tasty! The interior decor gives this place sort of an industrial feel which adds on to the experience. Four Barrel is great for having coffee and getting some alone time as well as gathering with friends to catch up. If you want to come do some work here beware because there is no wi-fi but I find that helpful because that means less distractions when it comes to studying.

You will often find this place with a line but the line moves pretty fast. There are 2 lines, one for your lattes, mochas,... etc. and one other line for individually dripped coffee on your left. Yum!

Oh and don't forget to lock up your bike on their bike racks outside!

I'm a Scrooge during the holidays.  Anyone who knows me and my relationship with my family can understand why.  So when I was looking to escape for a little bit and hunker down at a cafe to do some work, I was looking forward to Four Barrel.  I happened to come at a good time, as today is the day after Xmas, and everyone is in the Powell/SF Shopping Centre area returning gifts they didn't really want/need.

The line moved very quickly and I ordered a latte.  I asked the cashier if there was a password for wifi, and she informed me that they didn't have it.  DOH!  It seems they don't really want anyone camping, as there aren't any electrical outlets available to patrons, as well.  I get it, but I still needed a little escape, and was a bit bummed that Four Barrel couldn't provide that to me.

I sat at a little table started to people watch and was content with this for awhile.  My latte was delicious.  Smooth and not bitter.  I enjoyed every sip.  Next time, I'll get my coffee to go, or bring a book.

Like their coffee and mocha.  They serve their mocha with only whole milk or soy milk so don't ask for lowfat.  Mocha is made with good chocolate not loaded with sugar.  The lines are constantly very long and the espresso drinks take a few minutes to make.  One of the best aritsan roastery in the city (Sightglass is my other favorite).

Some observations, and how you know you're a yuppie at a snobby hipster coffee shop:

"Can I have a double skim latte no foam?"
"We only have whole and soy milk."
    "What's your wifi password?"
    "We don't have wifi."

There's a separate bar devoted to drip coffee.

Then again,, it is a coffee bar in the Mission and the coffee is pretty good. Maybe I should just be grateful they take credit cards!

By my measure, Four Barrel roasts the best beans in San Francisco. It doesn't taste burned (I'm looking at you, Ritual), holds up well in milk or alone, and is reliably complex and flavorful. I wish there was a place in the East Bay that hawked their goods, but until then, I'll cross the bridge to get at these beauties. If you have an espresso machine at home, I suggest you grab a bag of these beans and give 'em a whirl. (UPDATE: Now both SubRosa in Oakland and Local123 in Berkeley are using Four Barrel beans and have bags of beans for retail. Hallelujah!).

Their cafe, on the other hand, has its pros and cons. The decor is interesting and funky...but the tables aren't all that comfy, and the crowd slash lack of wifi makes this a less-than-ideal place to camp out for an afternoon (the primary function of cafes in my life). However, their baristas know what the hell they are doing, so if you want a tasty cappuccino and can find space to sit and enjoy it, Four Barrel is worth the pit stop.

Space: High ceilings, well-lit, with all the Mission essentials of exposed industrial whatever, hip art and gargantuan lighting fixtures. Jam-packed with folks in line and tables small enough to demand the choice: coffee or laptop on the floor?

Service: There are a couple people who will help you through the assembly line of getting your order. In my visits, one will always be pleasant, and the other simmering with resentment over the last 10 minutes of her shift.

Substance: Coffee's good, but limited. They got what they got and you better like it, no adornment. Scowls for decaf and soy. OK, OK, sorry!

Overall, this place is structured to discourage settling down to work and, at those busy-busy need energy to-go times of day, the line's out the door. What's the point of you, Four Barrel? I like everywhere else better.

There is a reason why the line is consistently out the door here.  The coffee is exceptional and the baristas know their craft damned well.  My friend and I were able to claim a coveted wooden booth by the wall and savored our cappuccinos.  The espresso was strong with light floral hints without a note of acidity and bitterness.  I was transported back to my days in Italy, where I drank two cappuccino cups a day.  Of course, the little leaf coffee topper enhances the experiences a tad.  The ambiance of this place is also fun - rustic and woodsy.  In addition to the mounted animal heads on the wall, booths that look like tree stumps, and forest lined wall paper in the bathroom, there is a huge roaster contraption that takes up half of the space.  Good thing the rest of the space also includes plenty of indoor and outdoor patio seating.

This place kills it. They are the real deal - roaster/coffee shop in one building. They work directly with farmers and bring in high quality green coffee to roast on-site and prepare expertly in a variety of styles. Unlike many "third-wave" shops the atmosphere here was friendly and welcoming, with some good jams playing from the turntable and excellent coffee served with a smile. A lot of shops could learn a thing or two from Four Barrel.

I love this place for its architecture and decoration, and of course the coffee. If you're a coffee fanatic, there are few better places than the bay area to be living in. Four Barrel makes the cut for one of those places that every coffee fanatic should try.

The reason for it is the entire experience that you get in the coffee shop. Right when you walk in, you see this huge space which goes against the usual concept of a cute little neighborhood coffee shop. At any given point you can easily fit about 50 people in the place and not feel like it's incredibly congested. The lines tend to get long, but they move fast enough where you don't feel like you're waiting a long time. Plus there is so much to take in visually that waiting never really becomes an issue. The furniture is minimal leaving the place extremely spacious. There are also some great spots outside to sit when the weather is nice. It's difficult usually to find a spot though unless you're standing outside scouting for one.

On to the price - I honestly don't think it's expensive. I pay for the taste and experience in a coffee shop. I think that's why people go there in the first place. Not just to go in and get out. If that was the primarily goal then there are places that serve that crowd. But this space encapsulates an experience - an experience that I'm ok paying around 3 bucks for for a Chai Latte that's expertly made. Also, do try their doughnuts. I had the spiced caramel one and it was good, but the chocolate one is what I hear all the craze is about.

Finally, the actually coffee is great. They have an entire counter to see how drip coffee is actually made and the staff is extremely friendly in engaging you with your questions, which I always seem to have. I love a place where the staff truly takes their time and shows that they want to be there.

And four barrel has that in its decor, ambiance, staff, and coffee. I love this place. Always a stop when I'm in the area.

Met up with an old co-worker here before grabbing brunch.  Thought the atmosphere and vibe of Four Barrel was great.  I really liked the table setups and open space.

I decided to get a cafe latte even though I normally don't really drink coffee in the US.  Call me an elitist, but nothing compares to a good 'ol café con leche from Spain.  Really not sure what people find so good about this coffee.  It is so diluted.

This rating is mostly based on the service that left me wondering if I looked like a homeless person ordering at a Michelin star restaurant in New York City.

The line was stacked about four deep as I rolled up with my Amiga. Since I was in the area after enjoying pizza perfection at Little Star, I figured some coffee would be a good way to avoid the post food comatose. Wrong, I ended up annoyed and underwhelmed.

    Awesomeness:
Four Barrel's coffee is pretty fabulous. I ordered a mocha style drink that tasted like perfection. Even though it was in a to-go cup, it still had the signature foam shapes crafted by an espresso master who was endlessly more nice than the lady who charged me for the drink.

The space is beautiful! Nicely done and cozy with a nice standing area out front. The overall vibe is very chill but the music inside is usually fairly loud. I'm fairly sure this place retains a "hipster" classification, and such it has some serious design swag.

    Not Awesomeness:
The lady who took my order! By the time I made my way to the counter I had a fairly good idea of my caffeination method, however she was uninspired to suggest anything to tip the scales.  Ultimately she rolled her eyes and sighed when I asked for the mocha. My bad, I'm sorry you can't fill that cup yourself and give it to me and have to get the attention of the barista. Life is tough. Nothing about my interaction with the bohemian goddess of the cash register added to my experience at Four Barrel.

Along the same lines, when going to get my drink and attempting to figure out WHICH drink belongs to me the barista went from a smiling gentlemen to a snobby pretentious jerk. Apparently it was my job to focus on my cup for it's entire journey and thus know where it has landed post assembly process. Reality set in and after feeling guilty momentarily the fact he can't tell apart the past three drinks he made on the counter may be the reason he is brewing coffee instead of assembling anything more complicated.

    The Dish:
I'll give it another spin due to the multitude of other fabulous reviews, but if the pretentious better-than-thou vibe that is displayed here is a reoccurring trend I'll stick to other local roasters.

I was meeting up with my pal in the Mission to catch up and arrived in the area a bit early.  In need of somewhere to camp till lunch, I navigated over to Four Barrel Coffee.  They're known for their delicious and, as it turns out, pretty strong coffee.  Another thing that I wish I had know earlier however is that they don't have WiFi.

I ordered a simple latte and it doesn't appear that they offer any syrups for flavor.  However, it's really unneeded because the coffee itself has so much flavor.  I'm not a connoisseur, but even I could drink this stuff unsweetened.

There is a public parklet that is open to anybody so you can enjoy your Four Barrel Coffee outside with your dog.  It was a fairly wet day in the city so the seats were empty this time but I can imagine them being quite busy on most days.  Prices are pretty much on par with coffee in the area and my latte was $3.75.  The shop is abuzz all-day, everyday and so it can get pretty loud normally.  If you want a quiet place to read, this probably isn't for you.  But if you just want to grab and go, you've come to the right place.

Been here a few times now. Honestly this is becoming one of my favorite spots. Basically coffee for me is tricky. You have your commuter coffee (Starbucks and Peets) that is super dark and roasted and brewed in a pot to pretty much no flavor and served hot. And then you have your extreme cutesy (Philz) with overly aromatic, more so drinking a hot blueberry rather than coffee. Four Barrel I find to be a very good balance in between. Their coffee is a a little bit acidic with a really good flavor. It's a little cloudier than other coffee I have had (like not all one black, mostly blends of dark brown throughout). Very comforting and overall easily drinkable. They have donuts here which believe it or not are sweeter than krispy kreme  (a little too sweet imo).

The interior has a rustic look to it which I like. It's a little small even though it's layout gives it the appearance of being huge. There are some outside seating/leaning area but it is usually covered with cyclists so good luck with that. There is a small coffee bar near the entrance which I still haven't tried. Seems more for fancy stuff. I wanted to try the normal first. Working my way up. It's pricey so give me a break :)

The coffee was good, let me get that out of the way. But the scene...jeez, get over yourself! We are talking coffee. Everyone there looked pretty much the same, and everyone there had at LEAST one of these things:

    1. Flannel Shirts and Skinny Jeans
    2. Those weird glasses with clear lenses, I don't really get those.
    3. Tattoos
    4. The Latest in iPhone technology
    6. The smell of cigarettes all around them

I had just recently read the book, Stuff White People Like, and I swear, it was the most creepily accurate thing I have ever seen.

Don't you think it is time to launch yet another Four Barrel? Obviously you have conquered the market as the place is always filled in your wifi-less store, lines out the door and spilling into your parklet. There are many more pockets of the Mission to cover so that hipsters can walk less and pay $17+ for a small bag of coffee beans.

C'mon Four Barrel. You openly mock your competitors and then shame negative Yelp reviewers on Twitter AND play awesome loud music on vinyl. We can find your delicious coffee in many fine restaurants, you give away coffee for free on your birthday and make us walk long distances to stand in line, then stand in line again and then hunt for limited seating. How could one not love the experience? Time to expand my friends. Your contrarian approach has won us all over so why not open more locations?

There is a coffee war brewing up (get it?) in San Francisco and Four Barrel can definitely hold its own. The coffee is good and strong, but my heart still belongs to Blue Bottle. Everything is pretty similar right down to the latte art. The mocha here is slightly more sweet. I like the spacious location and the giant machinery in the back, but seating is pretty limited. Overall, Four Barrel is a solid coffee stop.

Their menu is simple and short ... there's only a few choices on it . I had their mocha which was neither bitter or sweet ...  it just tasted like a cup of something warm . I also had their four cheese crossaint which was not bad . They also sell coffee beans and coffee makers here . As for the coffee shop , it's pretty big and spacious but I feel like there's too much empty space which is kind of weird . The tables kind of remind of the office tables for some reason .

I've been hearing about Four Barrel Coffee for a couple years now. So, I decided to check'em out. I ordered the drip coffee. It was kinda on the sour side but it had a nice caramelized finish. It reminded me of Sight Glass coffee. So, you know, it's ok. Not entirely sure what the craze was all about. I still think Philz Coffee is the City's best.

Ambiance-wise, this place is pretty nice. Ultra hipster central. Staff was super friendly. A nice stop if you're in the Mission area.

If you like getting your coffee served by a lumberjack then I suggest you come here.

This place is pretty hip...but more like where the OG adult hipsters with real jobs hang out. It's a huge coffeehouse that looks like a warehouse. The design is just cool. Open and Clean. There was always a line when I came here, but it was worth the wait.

I like that Four Barrel Coffee has a simple menu and a simple attitude overall. The staff is cool and friendly. I didn't mind waiting for my latte because I knew the staff took their time to make it just right. The mocha is rich and the butter croissant is so good. I was a little sad that I didn't try the maple bacon donut while there, next time.

There's bike parking, a record player, Wi-Fi, deer heads mounted on the wall, cute babies, fashionably hip dudes who dress better than me, fashionably hip dudes who dress better than me and have cute babies--just nice people overall.

I'll be back soon. This will be my go-to place when I'm visiting my sister and friends in SF.
