Very nice location. Lovely grounds and amenities.

The food is a bit expensive for the area - but tasty. They have a real chef unlike most of the places in the area. And if you have more inexpensive tastes you can venture across the street to Waffle house.

I'm a local, so I haven't experienced the hotel rooms. But, I'm a fan of the Flowering Almond Spa.

I am not one to visit salons on a frequent basis, but this is a nice retreat for locals or guests staying at the Founders Inn. The staff is very professional. The spa is clean and well-kept. I recommend the algae wrap or a massage to de-stress.

This Hotel was advertised as 5-Star. Whether this was a historical review or a prediction, I couldn't tell you, but it wasn't a current portrayal.

When I checked in I was forced to sign a form saying that a "Resort Fee may be applied to your bill" in order to receive my key. I was told at the time that this Fee was waiveable and that I could speak to a Manager in the morning to do so.

In the morning, the Manager on duty told me that the fee was in fact not waiveable, and that it was applied to everyone, but was not able to give a satisfactory answer as to why this fee was only added to the bill at the point of check-in.

If I'd wanted to pay this extra amount I would have chosen a different hotel.

The grounds and reception areas were beautiful, so I can see why someone would choose this place for a meeting or ceremony.

I wish that this quality extended to the individual rooms. I was housed in the James River House, where the appliances were old, the lighting was inconsistent, and decor was outdated.

Not antique or retro or colonial. Outdated.

Apparently they found a sale on cheap wallpaper, because in some rooms the walls, nooks, ceilings, and pretty much everything except the floor is covered by it. The carpet was interesting. It looked like the unacknowledged love child of a meeting between corduroy, Crayola, and Timothy Leary. The upholstery had multiple stains.

I wouldn't say to completely avoid this place, but I would hesitate to use it as anything more than a venue for a ceremony or meeting...and I'd get a room somewhere else.

I wasn't able to get out to look around the grounds as much as I would have liked.  This is a thoroughly charming Inn.  The room was quaint and nice.  Comfy quilt on a comfy bed.  There was a nook by my window.  They had a fridge, which I'm always grateful for.  Nice shower head in the bathroom.  They have a unique dinner menu downstairs in the pub.  A little pricey.  The staff is very friendly.  There is a 24 hour Waffle House across the street.

While out here working my butt off for The Man, my company has put me up in a nice hotel. This place is a very nice resort and spa. I can only speak for the York Lodge which is where I'm staying. There's the main hotel and there are 2 lodges that are not attached to the main hotel. My room is clean and spacious. The bed is very comfortable. I wish they would replace the furniture or reupholster them because I can see stains on the cloth and it kind of creeps me out. I'm not a big fan of the colonial decor, but I guess if it's a decor style you like, it's cute. I do see that the rooms will probably need to be redone in a few years, but it's still a nice place to stay. I am consulting at a business that is on the same "grounds" as the hotel so they give me rides to and from work at no charge! The staff couldn't be more friendly. The main building is nicely decorated and clean. I'm here for work, but I would imagine this is a lovely place to stay and relax the weekend away! I plan on staying at Founders for the duration of my business back and forth to here. I think for what everyone is paying to stay here, a few updates and fixes would really make this place worth the buck! I look forward to bumping this pretty hotel up to 4 stars!
