We had been craving dim sum for a while and my sister remembered coming here before so we decided to give it a shot. We're totally happy that we did! The various dishes ranged from good to great - we stuck with more of the steamed dishes so I can't speak for the fried stuff. The shrimp dumplings were ok but I thought the pork siu mai was delicious. The sio pao (steamed buns) were great as well. We were excited to finish off the meal with sesame balls stuffed with red bean paste and an order of their egg tarts. The restaurant where we used to get these last two closed down and we've been missing them. The prices were really decent too - we fed 4 hungry people for around $55. Glad we found a new place!
The only thing I would list as a negative is that the people going around with the carts were kinda pushy, so be prepared to either decide very quickly or tell them you're not ready yet. We basically sat down and were immediately hit with a list of things to choose from, which was a little overwhelming. -

In my endless search for finding good Chinese in NoVA, I have tried this place out several times because of it's easy location. I can easily get over the 80's tacky interior and filthy carpets if the food is good. Unfortunately, the food is average at best and they love love love to overcharge their non Asian clientele (as if I can read the bill in Chinese). Ordered the same thing 3 times, always a different amount, and doesn't ad up to the prices noted online or in menu. When you question the bill, suddenly "no good English."
This place definitely caters to other Asians, as I watched a young Asian couple seated next to us during lunch have 8 plates at the table and got change back on a 20 dollar bill. My friend and I who each had our own lunch entree and shared an appetizer had a bill that rang up to 32.88. All this and vege's aren't fresh, mushrooms are canned and the meat tends to be on the chewy side.
I won't be back. If you're Asian you might have better luck, but if you're white, bring a calculator and check your bill!! -

Not bad for a dim sum spot, but I love dim sum so it's acceptable. Give yourself extra time for parking - the shopping center is generally a mess and I usually end up having to park in the Home Depot garage (not sure if that's allowed but it's what works).
Service is pretty decent and so is the food. I guess it's all about the novelty for me - the excitement of seeing which cart comes up to your table and what to get. If you want better dim sum, try going across the street to Mark's Duck House.
If you're looking to hold a banquet or a Vietnamese/Chinese wedding, this is a good spot. You can rent out the entire restaurant and have them serve a traditional 10 (or some other high number) course dinner. I've seen this place really get transformed with the help of an event planner so there are ways to pretty this place up for a wedding reception. -

Today my friends visiting from out of town wanted Dim Sum, so they picked Fortune. Why? Honestly, after our visit today I have no clue.
I didn't feel like eating the Dim Sum fare, so I ordered straight from the menu. I felt really rushed while there; our waiter was extremely impatient. What made me angry was what happened when I got the check. My meal came out to be almost $13, although I specifically told the waiter i wanted the lunch special of Beef and Black Bean Sauce, which was advertised around $6.
Upon requesting to speak to the waiter in attempt to correct this mistake, he decided to inform me THEN (when I had to pay) that they weren't serving lunch today because today "is a holiday". It's January 2nd. What holiday is it? So I asked him just that, in which he replied "New Years." I informed him that it was not New Years anymore, but he was stubborn and argued that he gave me a lot of food; the dinner-sized portion. As if HE were doing me a favor by giving me all this food without my consent.
All in all, I would've been okay with paying the extra dinner price if the waiter weren't so rude to me.
The beef and black bean sauce was bland. I found a piece of hair in it, but didn't say anything (and no, I didn't make up that up just because of the poor customer service).
Needless to say, I wont be back ever again. -

I must say I was not blown away with the food from Fortune. I have taken a vow to not review a place that is like this(one off not a chain and ethnic) until I have tried it a few times. So....
I have sat down for dinner and Lunch and gotten take out and each time it was nothing to write home to Mom or Dad or Uncle Lou or the neighbor that you hate because they give you those stale candies at Halloween because they could buy them in bulk and not have to spend much on the decent candy that's fresh...holy moly I'm off track! Anywho... nothing special here but if you want decent "Chinese" Carryout grub on your way home from work.... it's better than most. -

Fried pork chops were great.
Noodle dish was decent.
Not a place I'd go out of my way for, but tasty if I'm in the area to go shopping. -

The dim sum is NOT as good as SF dim sum as previously indicated. The dim sum is decent. Some dishes are excellent, a lot miss the mark.
This place is clearly a banquet hall on the weekends. It has that feel; dark, long, laden with cheap/fake chandeliers commonly found at Chinese/Vietnamese reception halls. Makes the ambiance soooooooo romantic. A real charmer, let me tell ya. Honestly, the ambiance is that of a dim sum resto. The staff were surprisingly friendly, and some were super expedient with getting what we needed, the others were high schoolers disgruntled with their weekend job, and well I don't blame them and all, I'm jet saying that service was spotty though overall acceptable and even decent.
But the real deal is the food. For a place so huge you would expect more of a selection, but I must admit the selection was not what I'm used to in Houston/SF, despite being PACKED. The portions were actually pretty large, which believe it or not is to the dish's detriment. Seems to be all filler and less on flavor. The one dish I must recommend is the giant oyster, though I do worry about an oyster so big as to how they got it so big. Be prepared to wait on the weekend, but because my (disabled) grandmother was in our party, they put us toward the front of the list. Some might say this is not good practice, but as there is practically no seated waiting area, I thought it was very nice of them. -

Dim sum is a Cantonese term for snack. In America dim sum usually means that small, bite-sized dishes are be pushed around on carts by servers who offer the dishes to customers. It's a fun process.
We used to go to Fortune Chinese Seafood Restaurant often when we lived in the area. We still see our old doctor so we check in whenever we have an appointment. Last summer they had young Asian dudes and chicks work the carts. Each server has a small cart. Each cart is different. They push the carts around the restaurant visiting every table. If you see something you like, then you ask for it.
You can also order from a menu if you want. They have live lobsters and live crabs in a tank as you enter. -

Been to this place forever. We even had our wedding here. But time has changed and so is the owner. A few years ago, we noticed the owner is no longer there and we saw a lot of new faces. We normally go here for Dim Sum since they're the top 2 around DC area. The other is China Garden in Roslyn. The quailty of the dim sum has been going down hill with the new owner. Not sure if they have a new chef back there or not.
My favorite is the white crepe with shrimp. I can eat that all day :) The small clams w/ bean sauce used to be great(they used to cook it hot when you order) but now if they're cold if they sit out on the cart for a while. Oh, you need to try the crysthanamum tea. It comes with rock sugar. Put the sugar in the pot and let it sits for a few minutes.
Anyway, I notice that there are less people here on the weekend. It used to take hour to wait for your name to be called. The dim sum is average but you don't have a lot of choice in DC. -
Review from Brenda D.
I've been here for dim sum and weddings. The dim sum is pretty average, but the service is pretty fast and friendly. There isn't really anything that stands out in my mind as being extremely delicious. I guess I would come here just because it is close by to where I live. There is plenty of parking around and the restaurant it is huge inside so the wait is never too long.

I spent 60+CAD for 2 people one morning in a high end Chinese restaurant on Bloor Street in Toronto. All we had was Dim Sum and tea. Yeah it was expensive but it was really GOOD Dim Sum. I spent 70USD for 3 people in a restaurant that no longer exists in the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. Again for just Dim Sum and tea. That place was really good also.
I bring this up just so you don't think I'm a punk ass talking sh*t out of the side of my mouth when I tell you that the Dim Sum at this place is at the lower end of the scale when it comes to flavor and aesthetics. It is almost an insult to the tradition of Chinese Cuisine to call this stuff Dim Sum.
On this visit, the chicken feet, and the dan tat were good. The har gow was ok. The rest of it was sub standard including the jasmine tea that was the color of black coffee. You gotta wonder about an establishment that can't even serve a decent pot of tea.....that's an epic fail. Especially disappointing was the sticky rice which was just rice. No chicken, no egg, no lap cheong, no peanuts, no nothing ...... just rice. Six Dollars for rice.......Yeah, there is a reason why it's called Fortune. All in all the dim sum experience here is watching cart after cart of ground shrimp shaped into various shapes and breaded and fried. It's mostly cold hard chewy and flavorless. My recommendation is to order only from the hot cart.
1 1/2 stars. The quality of the food is once again going down hill.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Fortune serves average-good dim sum in an okay setting. I don't think our service would have been as good if my friend hadn't spoken Cantonese, but once she did the waiters loved us and catered to our every need! It definitely fulfilled my dim sum craving, and is decent Chinese food.
The location is kind of inconvenient for those in DC, but the restaurant is pretty big with many tables and a stage for weddings next to a dance floor (I guess it has to be big if they're serving an Asian banquet). The lighting is dim and the place is pretty clean. The bathrooms were very nice! Chinese restaurants in LA were never this clean!
The dim sum was fairly expensive and nothing special. Some were good and fresh, but some were sitting on the cart a while and not so good. At first they served us lipton tea and I got angry. Who the F serves Lipton tea at a Chinese restaurant?! My friend spoke to the waiters and then they brought us Jasmine tea (my favorite), special, piping hot plates and conversed with us about Asian places to eat at in DC.
Not a bad restaurant, but not the best dim sum and fairly expensive (though it was a cheap east coast meal). -
Review from Will C.
Highlights:
- Mmmm... bok choy was delicious.
- Fresh egg custard tart from the kitchen had me close to tears. Butter and flaky crust with soft, warm filling.
- Pork buns were hot and scrumptous.
- Asian talent a plenty.
Our waitress was very kind and helpful, and definitely added to our dim sum experience. I'm sure it was of some added benefit that I spoke Mandarin Chinese.
The restaurant is much, much larger than it appears from the outside. Be sure to get in early or else you'll be waiting behind several groups of Asian families. And when I say Asian families, I mean the entire spectrum of young to old Asian crowds and friends. This my friends is a good sign of a non-compromising restaurant that cooks authentic, Asian food. And it tastes authentic.
They do dim sum here the way it should be done. Served on steam carts. But instead of middle-aged Asian ladies, I'd say at least 50% of the cart-pushers are teens. One of my gripes is that there were a couple of dishes that one could tell had made several rounds around the restaurant and were lukewarm by the time we dug into them. For example, the bbq pork.
Location is sort of out of the way, but it's certainly worth the drive for some very good dim sum. In terms of atmosphere, food, and comfort last Memorial Day was the best lunch meal I've had since I moved to DC. -

I hadn't been to Fortune in years, so we decided to stop in for some Dim Sum. As usual, we tried about 10 dishes between us - fried shrimp, steamed dumplings, Chinese broccoli, duck - you name it.
Everything was good. Outstanding? No, but good.
Best thing was the stuffed crab claws, so be sure to get a plate of those when you go.
The service is attentive and friendly. I certainly won't let YEARS come between me and Fortune again. -

I have fond memories of coming to Fortune in the 1990's and until recently I was always pleased with their quality of food and service.
Last weekend, on March 6th, 2011, a group of friends and I had gone and we saw a cart full of pineapple sticky buns - as would be expected, we asked for it, and when we saw the server using his hands to pick up the buns, we asked that he used tongs, and he stated "they didn't give me any tongs." I asked that he please not use his hands, he went to get chopsticks, and rudely threw the buns on a plate, took the order card, filled it out, and threw it on the table. He then didn't say thank you, and refused to speak to us.
To make things worse, when we only gave a 15% tip, a waitress came back and asked why the tip was so small . . . If you can make the trip, go to New Fortune in Gaithersburg, MD.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I've been going to this place for years, because it was close to home. I would never go here for dinner. The food is eeehhh.
Dim Sum is where it's at. I've seen the bad reviews of this place, but until I can find a better and cleaner place for Dim Sum, then Fortune it is!
It's grimmy like a Chinese restaurant should be. But the Dim Sum is pretty good.
As for the dinners, I only go here when people have their wedding receptions here. It's about what you'd pay for a regular dinner reception, $50+/person. I'm beyond the food even at receptions, merely because it's the same ol' food. And all they serve for beer is Heinekin. -

Not sure what all the fuss over dim sum is about.
I was not impressed with Fortune. As a pescetarian, I had three options. The food was decent but I was hoping for more to choose from.
I find the concept of the food being brought around to every table by cart very disturbing and have no desire to try dim sum again.
Really depressing interior and location too. -

My wife and I wanted a good banquet-style Chinese dinner for New Years Eve so we tried out Fortune. It was one of the best Chinese restaurant experiences we have had in a long time. I consider that a considerably favorable review having grown up in Hawaii and having moved here six months ago from the San Francisco Bay area. Our order was as follows:
Roast crispy chicken with garlic
Eggplant w/garlic sauce
Szechuan Crispy Beef - Proper
Soy Sauce Noodles
Char Siu Bao
We started with the char siu bao and they did not disappoint. They were not listed on the dinner menu but our waitress dutifully ordered them up for us. Next up was the noodles and the eggplant. I am not a huge fan of eggplant but they were expertly cooked and served with an amazingly flavorful sauce, sweet and garlicy. The soy sauce noodles were fabulous, reminiscent of lo-mien from the Hawaiian Chinese restaurants of my youth. They were crisp but not overly crunchy and the sesame and onion flavors were very pronounced.
Next up was the roast garlic chicken. Perfectly crispy skin with tender, juicy meat. It was one of the best restaurant chicken dishes I have ever had. Last up was the Szechuan crispy beef. If you don't like this dish, you don't like food and nothing will ever satisfy you.
I am willing to overlook poor service for great food, but the wait staff at Fortune was friendly and attentive. We will be making Fortune our go-to Chinese place from now on. -
Review from Eric O.
Coming from SF and being Chinese myself, I have high standards when it comes to dim sum. It's been a while since I've had it back home, so I was pretty excited to try Fortune.
The first thing you'll notice is that this place is huge. Doesn't look it from the outside, but once you step inside you'll be amazed at how open it is. When we went on the weekend, there were a lot of high school / college kids pushing the carts. I'm guessing they're cheap family labor. Given that there are so many of them, there isn't much of a wait time to get a particular dish--awesome. Plus they're totally Americanized too, so for those non-Chinese speakers, you're good to go.
As for the dishes themselves, they weren't bad. They have a decent variety and the prices are reasonable. I did notice that on the whole, the food was lukewarm. I guess they need better heating in those carts. But overall, the food's alright. It's good if you're looking for your fix of dim sum, as there really isn't much around the area. But seriously, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to some SF dim sum. :)
Oh one last thing--to the egg custard lovers like myself, I must say that I was a little disappointed. While the crust was fairly flaky, the middle was a bit hard, not moist and fresh like it should be. Boo. -

This place is so tacky, it's part of the charm. Fake flowers, gaudy decor. You sit down and boom, there is the food! Lots of choices. We love the pork croissants, shrimp in white crepe, shrimp/banana rolls, bok choy, garlic green beans, steamed chive dumplings, fried taro, coconut buns, lemon tarts. parking is a breeze, it can get crowded but since it is instant service, they move they crowd. Regular menu mediocre, don't bother. Oh, and China Garden in Rosslyn? Let's see: it's difficult to locate and if you don't get there by 11 am (it opens at 11:30) be prepared for a long wait with no where to sit. It's in a mall. We just love Fortune, it's a family tradition. No, it ain't San Francisco, but neither are the prices. Yank Sing charges $17 for one dim sum dish of sea bass! You'll feed three hungry Italians for under $30 at Fortune and enjoy the heck out of it.

Absolutely the best source of Dim Sum in the DC area. Forget what it looks like, what it sounds like, and just put it in your mouth and let your palate make the call.......You'll thank me later......Garlic Green Beans, Shu Mai, Ha Gao, Pork Buns, Sharks Finn, Roast Duck............oh, the list goes on forever......
Easy access, plenty of parking and most importantly.......you'll walk away with $$ left in your wallet.....a definite staple to any diet in the DC Area. -

I've been going to Fortune for over 15 years, and though the service can be spotty or rushed at times, and the dim sum not as varied as one might like, it holds a special place in my heart. For the brand new visitor, know that the Fortune is absolutely different depending on when you go - weekends at brunch hour are packed (there will be a wait) but the dim sum will be hot and varied. On weekdays and off times, there will be no wait and the servers more attentive, but less choices and often the same cold plate of pan-fried noodles or sticky rice being pushed around. If you don't mind lots of people, go for the weekend.
The servers were all recently replaced by teenagers - all of them nice, but occasionally lackadaisical. Don't be afraid to flag them down and always ask your waiter to bring you anything you don't see. Your waiter can also explain what certain items taste like if the kid pushing a particular dim sum cart doesn't know too well.
There is also one server, an older lady who has been there forever, whom I affectionately refer to as the "dim sum pimp" - she will push whatever she's got on her cart like a crackhead selling bootleg DVDs in the laudromat. I love her. She's also great because if you get her giving you dishes, if anything doesn't have the right sauce or isn't hot enough, she'll rush and correct it before she serves you. She's just that attentive.
I have specific favorites that I always have to get before I can leave - here they are in no particular order - savory beef chow fun is sauced just right, roast pork is sweet with a perfectly lacquered exterior, pork siu mai are standard and tasty as are har gow, baked porked buns are large and doughy - could use some more pork, spring rolls are filled with julliened veggies and tender pork and are so very good, pork and chive dumplings are enhanced by sweet bits of shrimp, string beans are cooked to a tender crisp and lightly sauced, and the jiao zi (fried pork dumplings) are my ABSOLUTE favorite in the world. Like kill the cook for the recipe good. How they manage to get the pork exactly the right amount sweet and gingery, I'll never know. And not a bit of greenery in the filling. I could eat 50 of them and then eat 50 more.
All in all, this is a solid place. For me, it's a tie between the Fortune and China Garden in Rosslyn (which specializes in a slightly different style of dim sum - all the steam cart standards plus a few variations) and both do me fine. -

huh... im surprised i havent reviewed this place yet. this was the first dim sum place i went to in the area, but i'll have to say, it's still my go-to place. during times when it's not busy, the dim sum dishes can be cold, but im pretty sure that goes for any dim sum place. go when it's busy, the wait goes by pretty quickly because turn-over is pretty quick. the dishes are pretty tasty, the cart-pushers satisfactorily quick to come over (and for some reason, im partial to the one lady that says everything is good and we should try it - we just say no thanks, more har gao please), and all in all, makes me happy. it's not worth the trek to maryland just for dim sum - be happy with fortune.

I've only been here for dim sum. we arrived around 1 pm and the wait wasn't too bad. they told us 15-20 minutes, but it only took about 5 minutes to get a seat. the food is decent. i've definitely had much better dim sum. the one in rosslyn i think taste better and has better service. the service here was just alright. the people pushing around the carts look to be about 14 years old. and they dont seem to care. majority of them dont stop so that you can take a look at the food. you have to stop them. my favorite dish wasn't coming around, so we asked the waitress and she brought it right over, so that was nice. otherwise - good to fulfill your quick dim sum craving.

During the weekends, this place is a big banquet hall...Asian weddings with 10 course meals. Besides the weddings, we would come here for dim sum. There's usually a wait for tables, but you get seated pretty quickly. This place can get extremely busy during holiday weekends. It is usually better to arrive a bit early, when the dim sum service begins. We normally try to get there around 11:30/12:00. We've stopped by a few times at the tail end of dim sum and been extremely disappointed, with very limited selection and cold food. The dim sum is okay, the service is a hit or miss depending on who is pushing the cart. There have been times where the cart bypasses us and we have to try to flag them down.

Went here for a wedding reception and the seafood platters are huge and plentiful. Dishes included lobster stir-fry, tom rang muoi, steamed fish with soy sauce, roast chicken, and maw fish soup. As the only vegetarian in the group I was able to indulge in the vegetable stir-fry which was excellently sauteed with a white sauce - typical vegetarian dish at most Asian restaurants, but more delectable at this location. The fried rice is poorly cooked with a hodgepodge of cooked frozen carrots, peas, and corn.

I'm not squeamish about MSG at all. MSG is in everything from Chex Mix to mushrooms and ham. Used appropriately, its addition to food makes flavors pop. However, there was so much in the dim sum here that I was chugging water without relief for the rest of the day. While the food was pretty good, the post-prandial effect is not worth it.

Went here on Sunday for dim sum. Got there around 1, had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. Dim sum is open til 3 on weekends. Lots of variety, roast duck, crab, and the regular stuff you'd see. The food didn't taste very fresh, and some of our dishes were cold. The only items that stay heated are the dim sum itself, everything is on regular carts and open to air. You don't go to these restaurants for the service, but the carts constantly came around. Had to ask the server for water and hot tea about 5 times before getting anything. If I had to recommend a better dim sum place it would be china garden in Rosslyn.

For years and years I have had dim sum here. It's the most convenient and good dim sum in the vicinity for me. It's pretty consistent and always have the dim sum staples. They even serve dim sum during the weekday which is always a plus since its less crowded. The food isn't that great though since it isn't crowded.
One thing that annoys me, is that they charge you for soda refills! It's such a little thing, but who charges for refills?! Oh and my mom swears that they cheat you sometimes when they add up the bill, so double check before you pay.
My heart and tummy still vote for Oriental East in Silver Spring for dim sum though =) -

My sincerest apologies!
My previous review was for the wrong restaurant. That should have been to some other dim sum place.
I enjoyed Fortune. I went there with my gf and their family.
PROS: the staff is young.. lots of young people (im not being a pervert).. the benefit is.. that they all can speak English and probably Chinese as well. Therefore.. when I dont know how to say a dish in Chinese.. I can just ask for it in English. At other dim sum places.. most of the workers only speak Chinese.
CONS: everything tasted good.. but the duck at dim sum was fatty and greasy. i wont get the duck again.1 Previous Review: Show all »

In the busy 7 Corners shopping plaza adjacent to the home Depot. An excellent spot for Dim Sum, just make sure you drink plenty of fluids since MSG is one of the main ingredients in everything. Easily one of the top Dum Sum in NOVA, just show up a little before lunch rush since it can get a little insane in there, especially on the weekends. Good news is that it's huge, so your wait will never be that long. Loves it.

Go here for brunch. I am sure it sounds odd for me to recommend a Chinese place that focuses on seafood for brunch...but trust me. A group of my friends and I have had a dim sum brunch tradition here for many years. The dim sum brunch service happens every day from 11am to 3 pm but Saturday and Sunday are the most popular.
This place is great for dim sum, especially if you have never had it before. The staff is lightning quick to bring items out and will answer any questions about the food.
Items I like? Garlicky green beans, pepper and salt chicken, scallop dumplings, pork dumplings (I have a dumpling thing), shrimp with sugar cane. Some of their dishes are, unfortunately, too greasy but enough of them are really good. -

I love me some dim sum. I don't know whether it's the treasure-hunt thrill of diving into a little metal tin to explore its mysterious contents, or the competitive thrill of knowing that there's just one plate of shrimp dumplings left AND IT MUST BE YOURS, but I should probably be glad it isn't readily available where I live.
Fortune is not at all close to where I live - it's across the country, actually - but what can I say, I'd heard good things. We went on a weekday for lunch, and the place was pretty much empty, so the service was fairly fast (although the lack of other patrons meant we kept seeing the identical dishes, each time older and colder than on the previous pass).
Fortune clearly has a seafood emphasis, but I didn't consider any of the things we tried to be outstanding. There were all the usual standbys: the shrimp dumplings, the spiky deep-fried shrimp balls, the crepelike pancakes with the sauce from the little oilcan. The food was tasty and they had a pretty good selection, but it wasn't excellent, just good.
The decor in there is pretty awful - acoustic tile ceiling with some stained and missing tiles, and an intensely purple ballroom-type area in the back - but it's the kind of clashy, cheerful awfulness that actually makes me more confident about the quality of the food, because the owners clearly have no time to waste on frivolous considerations like ambience - they're busy cooking, for cripes sake!
My friend and I agreed that for a quick and inexpensive meal (about $10 each with beverages), Fortune is pretty good. But it's not the kind of dim sum I'd travel thousands of miles to have again.
