9 reviews for Forti's Mexican Elder Restaurant
Even after reading a few reviews of Forti's I was surprised by a couple things.
For one, how tucked away in an industrial/sketchy residential area it is, almost hidden from the road.
Secondly, how big and extensive the interior space is.
But the food? Well it delivered as well. I ordered a combo, number 2 I think. It had a taco, tamale, enchiladas, rice and beans. It was all pretty good. Not the most amazing Mexican food ever but pretty solid.
The service was very good, the prices reasonable and the atmosphere is quite something. The older gentleman that saw me taking pictures and dragged me by the sleeve over to a mural so that I would not miss a shot of Pancho Villa was a very warm character addition to the whole experience.
Forti's is probably one of El Paso's more interesting places to dine.
Hot...spicy hot...almost inedible unless it is your thing! I had the shrimp fajitas, good and only a little spicy served with delicious fresh corn or flour tortillas. I was unable to eat the salsa it was one of the hottest things I have ever tried.
Forgo the margaritas...watery and not very flavorful.
This is a huge favorite with the local population and just a little hard to find but a great place to try when in El Paso.
Tried here based upon the other reviews I read here. The place at first seemed empty when I walked through the door, but once all the way inside it was pretty busy.
Decor is that of an outdoor Mexican courtyard. Everything seemed clean and properly set up.
Service was quick and while not overly attentive, was attentive enough where I could enjoy my meal and not feel like someone was looking over my shoulder the whole time.
The food: First, the chips and salsa - The salsa was spicy. I am used to the weak stuff being put out and having to request the spicy stuff but they put the spicy stuff out by default here. I didn't ask for the weak stuff, I mean what's the point? Want ketchup? Go to Mc Donalds. The chips appeared homemade. A little thicker than I'm used to, but still good.
For dinner I had the #1 combo of a taco, tamale and an enchilada with rice and beans. the first thing that caught my attention was the beans. Very flavorful and they had texture! Most places the refried beans are more of a paste, not something actually resembling beans! Next was the rice. Again, very flavorful and appeared homemade. I knew I wold be ok the rest of the meal if the rice and beans were this good.
Everything else was delicious! The only thing that disappointed me was the enchilada. It seemed flat and didn't appear to have that much cheese in it. The tamale wasn't wrapped either, so I'm assuming they unwrap it prior to putting it on the plate.
Overall, not bad. If the enchilada had more cheese and the tamale had appeared more "authentic" i would have given 5 stars.
I have been going since I was a little kid. I recently re-visited and immediately was reminded why I loved it so much.
The atmosphere is so authentic. I always feel as though I am traveling in time and will see Pancho Villa at the bar. The service is quick and prompt. The owner and his wife, Consuelo, are there almost daily. She is always making it around to every table to check on her guests.
The must try is the Salpicon. Homemade daily with a recipe that has been passed down for generations. It is so tasty and a bit spicy so make sure to have plenty of water available.
If you are craving authentic Mexican food with the authentic Mexican enviroment, Forti's is your place.
Listen, I've tried, tried quite hard, to have better Mexican food than this, and it just hasn't happened before or since. As I recall, anything with cheese is automatically amazing.
On a road trip through the southwest with one night in El Paso lead us to Forti's. We asked for a good dinner spot at our hotel and were directed to Carlos & Mickeys which we of course checked out. It was packed and looked like a great time on a Friday night, live music, rooms full of patrons, margaritas a plenty. Downside... 1 1/2 hour wait. Having driving all the way from San Diego, we decided we couldn't wait, so we ended up at Forti's.
Off the beaten path, for sure, but a good time none the less. We were seated right away, there was a musician playing in the bar, dancing, and tables full of couples, families and groups out to have a good time.
We ordered a margarita and settled right in. Envious of the queso de fundido that looked so delicious on a neighbor's table but worried about the trauma is might cause to a long traveled belly we opted for the guac instead. We also ordered a combination plate (2b to be exact) 2 tacos, a relleno, an enchilada, rice and beans. More than enough food for one person. The chicken tortilla soup was enormous. (we were wondering why is cost so much until we saw it) The bowl of bisque like soup was huge, and accompanied by a plate of crunchy tortilla strips, fresh Mexican cheeses, sliced avocado, sour cream, etc. Couldn't even put a dent in it.
The service was fine, a little slow because of the engagement party at the table near us, but that's what we get for asking to be seated in the thick of it. I'm sure on a typical night there wouldn't be any issues.
We went home stuffed and happy, well before we would have even been seated at Carlos & Mickeys.
This place has the best Mexican (or New Mexican) food I have ever had. I love it spicy and boy did they deliver! The place doesn't look like much from the outside (or the inside for that matter), but they make some good food and margaritas! It can be a bit loud in the main dining area because of the live music, but I guess that is part of the charm. The food is excellent, the service is friendly and the prices reasonable, so I would highly recommend Forti's and will hopefully be returning soon.
What a gem! I live in Denver and I love L-O-V-E love green chili. This place delivered and then some. You will think that you are lost while you are trying to find it--Don't worry, you're in the right place. From what I'm told, the building used to be a hacienda and is also haunted, so watch out at night. The food, though, what can I say. It was incredible. The chips and salsa to start off are made in house, with a spicy (but not too spicy) salsa that sneaks up on you fast. You can stuff your face with their chips and salsa while browsing their small but unique menu. Two people in our group had the Chicken Tampiquena, and one had the steak tampiquena. Both were outstanding. The chicken was ordered Borracho (that means drunk!) style -- doused in tequila before cooking. Then chicken was spiced and cooked, then covered in green chili. Piles and piles of wonderful green chili. And served with a cheese enchilada and refried beans. $15 well spent. The steak was similarly prepared and served over green chile strips. No margaritas for us this time, but they did look good!
So My boyfriend was taken to this restaurant by one of the football coaches at UTEP and I traveled to EP for business often. On every trip he would ask me "Did you go yet?" Finally, I got with one of my Superintendents and off we went. Not an easy place to find if you do not know the area, but well worth the search.
We arrived around 6:30 on a weekday evening and were seated right away. The salsa is to die for. You can actually taste that the chili's are roasted. That flavor is so specific and a treat to the taste buds. I never order Chili Rellenos at a restaurant because I am always disappointed. But I went for it, along with a tamale. Again, a roasted chili... This is by far the most excellent Chili Relleno the has ever crossed my lips and the tamale was equally wonderful. I do not recall what my friend had, but he raved about it. We both left nothing on our plates.
I had 2 drinks and our bill with tip came to under thirty dollars. This we could not get over, what a bargain. The restaurant itself is an eclectic mix, very interesting, and the waitstaff excellent and knowledgeable. This is apparently has been a local favorite for many many years. A big do not not miss.....
