Review from May A.
Nice walk...
Came here to visit the Fort last month in January but was disappointed that it was closed for the season until May. Fort Adams wasn't part of our vacation itinerary but it would've been nice to see a part of history. We did walk around the perimeter and got a beautiful view of the bridge and Newport harbor. We took a few pictures of the outside and its beautiful surroundings to take home a little bit of history with us back to California because who knows when I'll be back to the east coast again... -

What a beautiful spot. I came here with a wedding party to take photos and it's easy to see why.
There's the harbor to your right, looking out to the beautiful bridge. Unfortunately, there was a giant cruise ship blocking most of the view, the but photographer managed to work around it. That's how big this park is, as long as we walked far enough, we could cut it out of the pic.
What really amazed though is the fort itself. No one has talked about the history of it here yet, so let me do just that:
Fort Adams is the largest coastal fortification in the United States. It was established on July 4, 1799 as a First System coastal fortification to keep watch for our enemies. It was used by the army and navy in different capacities up until 1965 when it was given to Rhode Island for use of a state park. And there you have it.
It's gorgeous, epically long and stone. I wish I had more time to explore or actually go in it, but what are you going to do,
I hear there is a kickass jazz festival here too.
Overall, an amazing park. I wish there was a little more information around about the things to see and do here, but ah well, I enjoyed just walking through for a little while. -

Wanted to see the Fort again after many years. Was here and used to watch the boats go by in the harbor. One of the best views of the Harbor entrance you can get is at Fort Adams. Loved this place in my Navy days when it was really just an eye sore to most.
I am glad to see that they are rebuilding and restoring it. Hopefully I will get back again to see it restored.
If you get here take the tour keep up with the guide the history of this old fort is really interesting and the architecture is really a marvel of it's time. -

I came here not for the fort but for the beach. In my quest to check out every RI state beach, this was the last on my list. When I told people that there was a beach at Fort Adams, no one believed me. And I know why.
I first actually checked out the fort itself - well not the inside of the fort - I didn't feel like paying for a tour, but I walked around the outside by the water. This is a nice short walk that gives a good view of Newport Harbor and the bridge.
After that, I got back in my car and drove to the first parking lot to stop and see the beach. The beach is really really small. This is not a beach to go to for a beach day, but it is sandy and have a good entry into the water. In the end I think this would be a great place to stop after walking around Thames street for the day. It's free to park and free to swim - much better than any other Newport beach in that area, but it's definitely more of a bring your kid to the beach for an hour place.
So next time you're in Newport and you feel like a quick dip in the water, check it out. You're not going to find and bikini clad women or ripped guys here, but hey it's a beach. -

Seems to me this must be yelped already and I just can't find it.
Middle of January, so it looks like my craving for summer is right on schedule: Only seven more months until the 2008 Newport Jazz Festival at Fort Adams! Won't I feel silly if they change the location this year. Usually the second week in August.
I confess to not knowing much else of what goes on here aside from the Newport Folk Festival. It's a great place to be on a sizzling summer day/weekend with jazz greats on the stage, and boats crowded in to hear on the ocean behind the seating area. I do not like reserved seating as you're stuck in seats. General Admission gives you some freedom and if you get there by 10 a.m. or so, you get a good spot.
I'm getting used to the 3 stage arrangement, but I don't like missing so much. Often I think the artists appearing on those smaller stages should be on the main stage. Why don't they ask me about these things?
They began serving wine and beer last year, but the lines were formidable so I was having none of that. Sure would be nice to be able to bring a bottle of wine. But nooooooooo :-p
There are plenty of vendors selling all kinds of clothing, jewlery, art, music, and a variety of food vendors selling Thai, BBQ, Greek Salads and meat skewers, Chowder, Steak and Cheese/Sausages, coffee, lemonade, ice cream and the like.
Just bring lots of sun block and a light longsleeve shirt, to protect you from all-day sun and wind, especially if you're light complected. Other things I like to bring:
sweatshirt
water
crackers, cheese and fruit
comfortable chair (lowish so people don't freak behind you)
blanket (so you can make more room in front of your chair and so you can stretch out and close your eyes towards the middle of the afternoon)
binoculars
camera
comfortable, yet stylish, footwear
