Nobody sees Savannah without seeing Forsyth Park.  It's massive, sporting several different areas between the fountain, the tree-covered walkways, and the large open fields of grass. On previous visits to Savannah, we have had a wonderful time just walking around and taking in the atmosphere.

On our most recent visit there was unfortunately a children's book festival covering pretty much the entire park, which packed it with massive crowds and threw a monkey wrench into our plans to get some good photos of us together during our last trip before we get married. So that was some unfortunate timing, but we were still happy to see the park again even if it was amidst throngs of screaming children and irritated parents and costumed storybook characters.

    I miss this place!

Something about the environment- the happy people walking their even happier dogs, the young couples falling in love on the trail and the restful trees shading those under it from the blazing Savannah sun.

Having had access to it for over a year, I just miss walking and running on it's paths. Definitely take advantage of this park when you're in Savannah y'all!

It is a beautiful park with lots of photo ops, surrounded by beautiful architecture, trees, statues and a lovely fountain as the focal point.

LOVE this park. Came upon it on a beautiful december morning with a blanket, bottle of water, and some saltines after a hard night of drinking. What a place for a nap! Sorry I know I sound like a bum but really what a cure for a hangover. This place is absolutely gorgeous! There is no place I'd rather lay a blanket down in public and read a good book or bring my honey for a romantic picnic. After lying down for a little while in a little clearing near the fountain we made our way through the rest of the park. What a sight for sore eyes. There are huge, beautiful trees everywhere you look with moss dancing in the breeze and happy people walking their dogs and biking or jogging by. As you walk through the park you see a center with a cafe (where we stopped to get a bite to eat-pretty good), a playground beside it, and a large outdoor stage with a field for an audience. There is also a large monument in the center of the park which reminds you of all the historic value Savannah has in itself. The architecture in the homes surrounding the park is stunning and the gardens are rich and healthy. You must stop by this park if you are in the area and can appreciate these types of things!

A very nice park that seems like a great place for family outings. There are 2 open fields in the middle of the park, next to a large playground. The outdoor theater seemed like a great place for a holiday concert! Stop off at the cafe while you are there - you won't be disappointed!

Took my first trip to Savannah, and made it around all the squares and finally into Forsyth Park.  It is a dreamy little park, with tennis courts, jogging, fountain, and it's own arboretum.  The spanish moss hanging on the trees makes this the epitome of the beautiful south.  Didn't spend as much time there as I'd like but enjoyed seeing runners, walkers with dogs, little old ladies snacking by the fountain. Definitely a must see in Savannah.

Reminded me a bit of Wash Park in Denver, the big park in the old part of town where everyone frequents.

When you go to Forsyth Park, you could walk through a morning's farmers market, walk past a frisbee football game, run in a race, let the kids play on the playgrounds or enjoy looking at the nice scenery.

That is what I did last weekend and it was very relaxing.  This is a large park and very clean.  Both times I have been there have been brides getting their pictures made.

I highly recommend if you are in the area.

This park is beautifully simple. Sprawling thick grass on either side of the romantically lit center walkway, leaves endless possibilities. I would love to catch a symphony on the stage behind the splash pool. (or play one there myself ;) we even felt pretty safe walking our dogs at night.

I would like to add an additional review here, since there is no seperate page:

This is such a beautiful park with dripping Spanish moss trees (my first time seeing these types of trees!).  I love the magnificent view from a distance, of these trees on parallel sides, leading straight towards a fountain in the center.  The view really makes for a breathtaking photo.

I actually had an initial impression that this park was quite large, but it turned out to be much smaller than I thought.  We walked around this park and snapped photos for about 30 minutes or so.  For those on a time constraint, Forsyth Park can easily be made into a quick stop.  For those with more time, it could also be made into a leisurely activity.

For those who want to sit and read or rest, there are benches on parallel sides, in front of the trees.  I saw many people sitting on these benches.  One elderly lady sitting on the bench, in particular, called out to us "good morning!", which was welcoming, as this was our very first stop in Savannah.

This is exactly what I wanted Savannah to be. Twain meets Steinbeck in the great American memory. Rarely, in this country, does a place feel old. Europe can do it, Asia can do it, but American cities haven't had the time to imbue a place with generations of memories. And on the occasions when a meaningful old place is created, it is usually torn down and replaced with something shiny.

But this place feels like an exception. The trees are old, the moss is old, the buildings all around it are old, and the passing cars seem out of place. If its history wasn't so obviously American, you could mistake it for Rome.

This place is magical. It was our first stop as we got to Savannah over the weekend and we spent about 3 hours just taking it all in. First off, the park is just beautiful - as is most of downtown Savannah - but there is so much going on here. There are all kinds of sports, dogs, plenty of people watching and even a cafe nearby if you need a snack.

This is a must for anyone and everyone visiting Savannah. Bring a blanket and a book or good magazine and just enjoy it!

Within biking and walking distance of my old dorm house, I was a frequenter of Forsythe Park. Always a big stop for, tourists, locals, and SCAD students, this park was positively packed on nice days. Fortunately, the park is fairly large and even if there were a lot of people it was possible to find a spot on a park bench or a secluded spot under the trees. Surrounded mostly by residential homes it definitely has that quaint southern feel to it, basically it "has Savannah written all over it."
There always seemed to be events going on here too like runs and sidewalk chalk festivals, making it a meeting ground for all people.
The park is absolutely beautiful with the obvious highlight being the fountain (actually purchased from a Sears catalogue way back when.)

A breathtaking park that has a variety to offer. Located in the center of the old time Savannah squares.
It is a great place to bring a picnic, a ball to toss around, a cup of coffee or just a simple good book.
All types of people and dogs are all around. A million little shops and coffee places on the outskirts of the park! Hello Savannah!
Spanish moss covers the side walks and makes it a place that seems  magical!

Hello fountain, hello trees, hello endless luscious grass, I want to be a bum that lives here.

This park is smack in the middle of old Savannah and it couldn't be more fitting.

We walked around to see a wedding being set up as well as a projector to show a movie at sunset. People were walking dogs, kids, and themselves, they just liked being here.

The night was as warm as the days' dew sitting on the wild honeysuckle waiting for the fragrance of the air to take over. Yes, I felt very Blanche Devereaux the whole time I was here, it just feels Southern.

If you're in the neighborhood, take a stroll or jump on a trolley, it's a very nice place to be.

Stop 5 in our trolley tour, we enjoyed the air conditioned visitors center with reasonably priced lunch choices in their cafe. This park is large and full of history and interesting things to look at. There is even a splash park for the kids.

The cafe is a nice touch. The food was decent, though not exceptional, but after a week of spending too much money on food, it was nice to get a meal that wasn't above $25 total for three people. The bathrooms in this visitor center were also very clean and there were some couches for resting. I can't believe the city would fund such a nice visitor center.

    Absolutely gorgeous!!
This park is EXACTLY what you would imagine, if I told you close your eyes...
now think of a beautiful, romantic, old-time park in the deep, 'ole, south.
Feel the heat on your face, hear the beautiful, bubbling fountain in the middle of the park.
Now open your eyes and walk down the pathways under the hanging Spanish moss filled trees.
    Just gorgeous!
My daughter and son-in-law were married in front of the fountain, and it could not have been more romantic, classic or beautiful.
Not a dry eye in the park.

Had passed by a few times and finally this weekend was able to spend some time in this park. It was great, we had a nice bottle of wine cheeses and played some music while laid on our banquette. Really enjoyed the experience.  The only negative have to say is that I wish they would take better care of some part of it.  Some plans look like they are dying and some of the walkways need attention as well.
Overall it was very peaceful and relaxing experience!

The Grand Central Park of Savannah. Well, not as big, no lake, no zoo... but it's an analogy fer cryin' out loud.

The classic, sculptural fountain is gorgeous, but you'll be admiring it from a few feet away while your hands grasp the wrought iron fence. No one's going to be stealing the wishing pennies from this fountain. There are big trees for shady picnics, big lawns for sunny picnics, a playground, paved paths for walkers and beautiful gardens, and, well, that's about it. It's big and pretty and picnicky. It's good for tourists to stroll through, but even better for residents to hang out in.

When you visit Forsyth Park, be ready......it has to be one of the most beautiful places in North America.  Words cannot describe how gorgeous it it.

The huge oak trees dripping Spanish Moss, the magnificent fountain and the stately homes lining the park make for an unforgettable experience.

I suggest you start walking on Bull Street from Oglethorpe or Bay towards Forsyth Park.  On the way you will experience all the squares with beautiful historic homes.  Bull Street runs directly into Forsyth Park, the view again is a show stopper!!

And I haven't even seen the place when the azeleas are in bloom!!

Beautiful park, and NOT as far a walk from the River St./City Market area as it might seem at first. Maybe 15 min? And depending which street you walk down, you will probably pass a number of parks/squares and stores along the way.

I suggest bringing a football or a frisbee or something to make good use of the open field space. But if nothing else, it's lovely to stroll around, sit on a bench and watch other people, or swing on the playground like a kid again!

Very lively, active park. In a single Sunday afternoon, I witnessed basketball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, dog-walkers, SCAD students doing photography homework... Plenty of people watching potential.

The park spans several blocks, with enough of space for quiet contemplation apart from the action. The fountain in the center dates back to 1858, with significant renovation. Like any other area of Savannah, you will trip over historical markers without even trying.

CLASSIC SOUTHERN PARK WITH A GORGEOUS FOUNTAIN

After a great day of strolling through the squares of Savannah, we ended up in this gorgeous park.  The park is filled with oak trees dripping with Spanish moss and an elegant two-tiered cast-iron fountain is the focal point.  We sat on a bench near the fountain and enjoyed the sound of the water and the shade provided by the trees.

A great place to relax in the beautiful city of Savannah.

A dream. I love this park, I was drawn to it. It is my ideal, when I think of a beautiful city park.

It is lush and green, and the paths are lined with huge oak trees dressed in flowing Spanish Moss. The Dickens-esque light posts and surrounding Victorian mansions make for a gorgeous and nostalgic experience.

If you like the haunted mansion area in Disneyland, you will love this park. The folks at Disneyland really hit the nail on the head in their replication of the look and feel of this part of the South.

My favorite park in Savannah, GA.
I like the park because it always has something going on and lively with lots of people (but not too many to hinder exercising).  It's clean and beautiful. Lots of shaded areas.
Tennis and basketball courts are available for free.  Great roller blading terrain.
Surrounded by historic housing, hotels, coffee shop (Sentient Bean), and organic grocery store.
Parking lot is small but there is also street parking.  Parking can be hard to find on crowded peak hours.

    Great small city park.

Well maintained with beautiful trees & invigorating fountain.  There are quiet areas to relax.  However, if you want to pursue more vigorous pursuits you can find an activity on the sports courts, run, or bike.

You can drink & snack @ an inviting cafe in the park while watching the park life go by.

It is small in size.  So don't be thinking in terms of Golden Gate Park, Balboa Park or Central Park.

The tree lined pathways are perfect for a dusk stroll when the street lamps are just coming on. People smile as they pass each other (a nice reminder that you are in the south).

One of the best things about Savannah... Free events here are great and well- attended. Great spot to read, tan, walk your dog... Two great playgrounds, a garden for the blind, and a historic training fort is getting a makeover and will soon be reopened as a visitors center with a cafe and a band shell.

Just be careful here after dark.

Forsyth Park is a true treasure of Savannah, the type of park you'd expect a Southern city known for its beauty and level-minded planning to have . . . yet for years Forsyth was neglected, believe it or not! I used to live in the Forsyth Parkside building at Whitaker and Gwinnett and there's a photograph in the lobby that shows a mist-covered but dirt-barren Forsyth Park in the 1970s . . . not a blade of grass on it. Apparently, like much of the city, the park fell into neglect for years but thankfully has been saved. The lower end of the park, towards the river (Gaston Street side of the park) benefits from ample tree cover and is a lovely place to stroll about while the southern side of the park near Park Avenue boast two huge playing fields often used for soccer or ultimate Frisbee, a basketball court, and tennis courts. The northernmost end of the fields is a great place for pic-nics, as are the shady parts of the northern end of the park in good weather. There is a wide concrete path that runs the entire perimeter of the park and is great for running. This is also often used by cyclists and skaters to move from one end of the vast park to another as is the center concrete path that runs right through the middle of the park.

The famed fountain is on the northern side (towards the river . . . people seem to get their north and south mixed up a lot in Savannah). The fountain is beautiful and worth seeing and photographing, but please, if you're a tourist understand that there is ALWAYS someone taking photos by the fountain if not holding a wedding or some other event there . . . meanwhile, there are people who live in Savannah attempting to walk around the fountain on their daily business. All I am trying to say is, this is a living city, not Disney Wolrd or historic Williamsburg . . . please be understanding of those who live in Savannah and don't block the through-fare around the fountain forever!

The park is very safe in general during the day, but aside from its perimeter walkways mentioned above, is closed at night and thankfully there's often cops around at night making certain people are not lurking in the dark parts of the park . . . still, don't wander into it, especially the forested northern side, after dark. There have been incidents of crime. Also, when rounding the corners of the perimeter walks (say, at where Whitaker St meets Park Ave in example) be wary because cyclists often cut these sharp corners fast, and I've seen runners and kids on bikes smack right into each other before. It's not pretty . . .

May is a great time to see and photograph the flowers and other botanical delights of Forsyth Park, by the way.
