I LOVE Ford's. I eat there at least once a week and I send all of my friends there.
Their burgers are always perfectly cooked and their salads are huge and delicious.
The staff is terrific. Awesome guys with a laid back attitude. They seem to really enjoy their jobs and are always very friendly.
It may not be the fanciest place but it's clean and comfortable.
Meh personified. If there was a statue of meh, well there is, it's the sign on this place.
I'm drawing a blank on describing my meatball sandwich. I finally peeled off the slab of mozzarella they threw on top. The sauce probably would have been okay for spaghetti, but was way too wet for a sandwich. The meatballs were okay, slightly inconveniently large, but not like trying to eat an apple in a bun.
I bet when you're drunk this place is the bomb. Gonna hafta test that.
Went here for a bite after Motorhead at The Roseland. The garlic cheese steak was excellent. Probably one of the better ones I've had. Trust me, I'm a fat guy who's eaten a shitload of cheese steak. I've also eaten a shitload of french fries too. These ones were pretty...meh. So skip those.
It was late; I may have been drinking and had spent most of the evening doing my best version of the running man. So around 2:00 am I was hungry and had heard about Ford's on 5th earlier in the night. So I skipped on down in my Hammer pants. Upon arriving I was greeted rather warmly and told I could push tables together for my group. The cooks seemed down right happy to see me. Maybe it was the pants. Anyway I ordered the cheddar bacon burger oh but I didn't stop there. Oh no. I had them add a fried egg. If you have not tried a fried egg on a burger I highly recommend it especially when it's not quite done so it's a little runny. Ford's did it perfectly. I don't care that they don't have fries they have a really good potato salad. So for late night grub I got what I expected and then some.
Stopped at Ford's for lunch today with my boyfriend, he eats there for lunch pretty often and wanted me to try it. I had a turkey/bacon/avocado sandwich and it was yummy. I had some red potato salad which was also yummy.. it's amazing how superior red potatos are to regular ones!
The chairs were comfy and the staff was friendly.
Yeah not so good. Had the buffalo burger-it was overcooked and tough. Partner had the italian cheesesteak and it wasn't good either. Service was good- but then we were the only ones in there. No ambiance.
My Italian steak wasn't very flavorful and my partner's buffalo burger was overcooked an tough. I won't go back.
Had a half hour to kill before a meeting and empty chinese restaurants did not hold much appeal so I ducked in here. They did the place up nicely, very comfortable chairs and well laid out.
I passed on the $145 dollar entree (did come with a bottle of Dom Perignon) and went for the $6 burger. While not the best it was far from the worst. I would have it again. Good bun and fresh vegetables in the salad and burger was nice.
Alas I would have given it half a star for the aforementioned great hours, guess they will have to live with 3
Delicious! We stopped here for lunch on a cold Saturday afternoon and the sandwich I got really hit the spot. I had a simple panini with lots of yummy melted cheese and pesto. The sandwich came with chips and with the drink added in my lunch bill was less than $10. Great place!
NW 5th has to be one of the greatest streets in portland right now. Where else can you get coffee, breakfast, lunch, dinner, clothes to wear to dinner, art and video games?? Ok, maybe on a bunch of streets in the pearl, but the whole experience won't be as casual or fabulously Portland as 5th street.
One of the highlights is Fords on 5th. Its a casual diner style restaurant with paper menus. You order at the register and rarely pay over 8$ a person.
I hear the cheesesteak sandwhiches are fantastic, but I only have eyes for the hot dogs.
I like the casual atmosphere, although it does feel a little cafeteria like. They have bar stool seating along the front windows - there is not a better place in town for people watching.
So I head into this place, optimistic. It has gotten some decent reviews on YELP! as well as a couple other sites, so I say "what the heck, I'll try it". Well, it didn't suck, but I didn't have near the 4 star experience that others have had.
Let's break it down....
OK, Old Town or where-ever, this place is in a dodgy section, face it. Any place that keeps their key to the restroom on a giant spoon..... wait, go back..... yes, you need a key to get into the restroom; Only places in dodgy sections keep their potty rooms locked up so the riff-raff doesn't take sponge bathes in there.
Atmosphere. somewhat clean, for the most part. I've definitely seen better, but I have also seen worse. Also, kinda seemed like a terrible version of one of the Kill Bill movies. Kind-of "Asian" artwork, (if you want to call pictures of Geishas artwork, & I am sure there are those of you who do) with equally horrible music! I'm not really sure what to call that music other than terrible. Thankfully it wasn't blaring to the point where I couldn't try to tune it out.
& for the few moments I took myself out of the B-Movie, I felt like I was at the regroup from last night's Frat party. This is surely a "guy's joint" personified.
Staff. Not friendly, not helpful, not happy to see a new customer. I think the guy was down right annoyed with me just for me asking if we could sit anywhere we wanted.
Let me tell you about the food. I started out by saying, the place didn't suck. It didn't. BUT! It wasn't great. I ordered the French Dip sandwich. I felt that the meat was seriously under seasoned, as well as a little on the skimpy side. I took the meat from one half of the sandwich, put it on the other half, & just had that. I will say though, the au jus was pretty good, which surprised me considering I found the meat pretty tasteless.
My husband ordered the BF Burger. While the texture & concept of the burger was good, again, the meat was under seasoned & tasteless. & seriously..... NO FRIES??? REALLY??
So, to summarize, I won't be running right back to 5th Street for another steak sandwich.
So, earlier this week a buddy of mine and I decided that we have been stuck in a lunch rut, so to remedy this we are embarking on a no-repeat lunch destination throughout the winter (or until we cave). Our first stop was Ford's on 5th. Most of the food is prepared on a greasy grill (but they do offer more healthy alternatives). Some of the staples include hamburgers, hot dogs, and Philly cheese steaks. The food is middle of the road and really only deserves a three star rating, however, I discovered that they are open until 4am on Friday and Saturday. Hell with Lunch. This totally warrants a "Thank you for helping me sober up" bonus star! It is pub food without the pub. Now I can gain lbs at Ford's instead of blackening my lungs while eating similar food at a dive bar.
Ford's is a great, small restaurant in Old Town. The staff is friendly and they always whip up a quality dish of food. I give them only 4 stars because as a burger joint, they don't have a deep fryer so I can't get my fries or tots (more my problem them theirs). I have to say the $4.95 breakfast they have is one of the best in town (especially if Sage makes it); two eggs your way, three pieces of bacon and garlic buttered baguette ... forget about it ... such a great breakfast (and good for you!) ... ha!
This place is really great for what it offers and when. Local angus beef, Blue Joe coffee, pretty good salads in a place with just a little bit of a 1950's diner feel to it....but with the obligatory NW art for sale up on the walls. If you're going to pay 6 bucks for a burger, I can't think of a whole lot of other places that can provide better for 6 bucks (and if you're not a carnivore, there's a good, filling caprese salad). The cheesesteaks are exactly what you would expect in a top notch cheese steak sandwich. As far as it being greasy...well, it's got NOTHING on any McMenamins in the greasy category. The only reason I took off that last star was because they had to nix cannolis from their menu. It's okay, since they weren't real cannolis anyway, but they were still better at 3am on Saturday than a donut.
when i drink, i have no desire to eat, i just thought it was the cool thing because everyone talks about how damn hungry they are after drinking, but then i learned, i could go on with my night without food. for a fatty to say something like that, something must be wrong! i eat to savor flavors, but when i drink i can't taste crap, so when we came here after a night of dancing, i dont remember loving the sandwiches, just eating it because it was in my face.
oh yeah, and the taxi guy that took me here told me of a better steak place, too bad i can't remember what the heck he recommended. yeah i could've walked here, but i ended up in a taxi. someone said "hurry up and get in!" so i did. the end.
but i will give them the stars for being open REALLY late and not being so expensive.
I came by with my B.F, we read all the reviews and wanted to check this place out. WOW! we really like this place. I had a mushroom steak sandwich with cheese and potato salad and my B.F had the bacon bleu burger with potato salad also. My steak sandwich was loaded, a lot of beef with loads of mushrooms, tender and tasty! My B.F tends to be over picky about his burgers, He told me that this was one of the best burgers he has had. John, (my B.F) asked one of the staff about the meat, He was told all the beef has been dry aged and comes from Strawberry Mountain? I am not sure where that is but I must say that beef is FANTASTIC!, tender, juicy and flavorful. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the restaurant was clean. The only complaint we had was that we had to wait about 5 minutes for a place to sit; We came around lunch time, every table was full and people were waiting for food to go. We had to stand near the soda refrigerators we felt in the way but the staff kept assuring us that we were not in the way and they would get a table ready for us as soon as they could.
NowI really don't comment on other peoples reviews BUT I am going to make an exception here. I read one of the reviews where someone stated that the area is dodgy? Well we didn't feel intimidated, So what if they have a key on a spoon for the bathrooms, they were clean, for the artwork we liked it and yes pictures of Geisha's would be considered art!, No fries, oh well we like fries but the potato salad was really good so I didn't miss all the grease! as for the beef Good beef DOES NOT NEED TO BE SEASONED, mine was great and like I wrote earlier John thought his burger was one of the best he has had.
We will definitely be back, we have been talking about this place ever since.
