Good selection: kiwi tart, mango tart (delicious), Irish mint, plain tart (terrible here), cookies and cream, honeydew tart, and more. I think there were at least 12 to choose form.
Lots of toppings to choose from.
I don't how much it was per ounce. But really, who cares unless you're buying for 1,000 people.
Clear plastic chairs and tables give it some style although it's no Pinkberry.
There aren't any tables or chairs outside which is a shame especially in San Diego. There is a corner bench which is kind of awkward in this setting.
Consistency runs on the slightly runny side which is the main justificaiton for 3 stars.
First and last time all in one evening.
What is the most important thing about the ice cream/fro-yo experience?
If you said the samples, then you are correct.
Let's be honest, even when you arrive at your "go-to" vendor, you have to sample. It's necessary for a complete experience. That being said, the man behind the counter tried to deny me this sacred ritual. He only granted me with ONE sample cup. WTF?!? Did he not realize that this was my first time here? DId he not realize that I need to try a few of the flavors before making any decisions?
If he did, he certainly didn't care. In hindsight I should've demanded more cups, but instead I had to put more flavors than I would have wished in my cup and dealt with the good along with the bad.
I was not impressed with the quality of the yogurt. Consistency was all over the place (mainly too icy) and the flavors weren't anything to write home about.
At a whopping $.38/ounce I expected more. The fruit toppings didn't look all too sexy either...
Next time I'm in the area, I'll look elsewhere...
I dunno..this isn't a 4 star fro-yo place in my opinion.
1) Sample cups are a little hard to get. You have to get them from the guy at the counter. And he was about as friendly as a hobbit. I can't imagine if this place was actually busy, how hard it would be then to get a measly sample cup.
2) The flavors are interesting at first until you try a few. I was excited about the chocolate covered cherry and it tasted like cherry rolaids covered in chocolate. gross.
3) The "frozen" yogurt was a little melty. If I recall it is called frozen yogurt for a reason. I put the yogurt in my freezer for an hour and it's finally reached the right consistency.
4) The guy behind the counter was not friendly at all. He was on the phone the whole time. Not.Good.For.Business.
Yelp, please take your "People Love Us on Yelp" sticker back. This place is not worthy.
Normally I don't like the self-serve places because I HATE when all my flavors mix together in the same container (someone needs to make a container that has compartments in them so you can have 4 types of fro yo in there without them all melting eventually and tasting the same), BUT I love this place because it's one of the rare places that has "lychee" tart flavored fro yo which is my favorite.
If you know what lychee fruit tastes like (canned or fresh), then you should come get their fro yo here cause it's so good. I wish I didn't share it with my bf or else I could be eating it still. :-( Guess I have to go back soon! One last thing, they said soon they would have a minumum $5 spend for all credit card and/or debit purchases.
Pretty interesting flavors, though I do notice they are a little more sugary tasting that Tutti Frutti down the street. I like the Lychee flavor the best! The taro is a little on the 'vanilla' side.
I'm heavily debating between 2 stars and 3. Hmm... perhaps by the end of this analysis I will decide which Forbidden warrants.
First off, the location is über convenient for me, as I live two blocks away in University City. Due to convenience, I should be frequenting this place much more than I have been, yet somehow I always find myself driving to Convoy instead. Conclusion: It just ain't THAT good.
Pluses:
+A fair amount of flavors to choose from
+They have lychee! This seems to matter to no one in my predominantly white posse but me. In an attempt to get my friends to try it, I was informed that this stuff actually tastes like some form of fruit-flavored booze, which begs the question - Do my friends lack a sensible palate or am I, in fact, a borderline alcoholic? I fear I may already know the answer.
Minuses:
-Original Tart is my go-to flav. To the Yelper who said they like their ish creamy, kudos to you; Forbidden's is definitely creamy. However, IT IN NO WAY TASTES LIKE TART YOGURT. My opinion, it tastes like motherflippin' Cool Whip (add texture, subtract sugar). Technically, if that's what I was looking for, I could take a trip to the frozen section at Vons next door, spend half as much, and jack some fresh blackberries from produce on the way out. Which brings me to my next...
-Toppings blow. The fruit isn't fresh nor abundant. Selection is lacking.
And the verdict is...
2 stars. Just thinking about that Cool Whip "Tart" makes me cringe. What a spiteful thing to do to such a reliably good yogurt.
This place replaced the short-lived "UC Sweet Spot" which itself replaced the long lasting institution that was the Baskin Robbins (31 Flavors) Ice Cream of University City, which I grew up with. But enough history...
Forbidden Yogurt is one of those new generation frozen yogurt shops, where you do it all yourself (dispense, add toppings), and they charge you by weight. Make it all your self means it's made exactly the way you want it, if you have any skill with dispensing and adding toppings.
Luckily, I once worked in a frozen yogurt shop about 900 years ago, but pretty much anyone can do it without making a mess. They have a good variety of yogurt flavors, and a decent amount of dry and fruit toppings, as well as topping sauces. Tasty stuff.
The decor goes for modern, with clear plastic chairs. It doesn't feel as airy as the old 31 Flavors did, since more of the store is hidden behind the yogurt machines.
If you live in this area, why trek out to Yogurt World on Convoy or at UCSD when you can come here and be close to home and have less line.
I'm a fan of mixing the peanut butter, heath bar, chocolate flavors, and adding something like Cocoa Pebbles and Caramel sauce on top.
Okay yeah, i know my yogurt joints.
FIRST: Their motto is so weird. its like the place where you can eat something so good for you and feel bad about it or something.
SECOND: The choices for toppings aren't all that great. Meaning, not enough fruits for me.
NEXT: Yogurt Choices aren't all there that you usually see at other places
LAST: Nowhere to SIT.
Only if i'm desperate and will not go to convoy.
This place is great! And super convenient for me too. I stopped in last night to check it out and was pleasantly surprised. I expected the different flavors of yogurt and I expected the different toppings. It was just put together in such a nice way that it made me smile.
I ended up getting some yogurt to take home (the chocolate yogurt with oreos is awesome!) and was in and out in no time flat.
Again - this place is great!
Apparently do-it-yourself frozen yogurt places are taking over this planet. A few years ago, the only yogurt option in my neighborhood was Golden Spoon. Now, there are 5 yogurt shops within about 2 or 3 square miles. Sadly, aside from Yogurt World and Yogurtland, there are few standouts and Forbidden Yogurt is kind of "just another yogurt place" that doesn't really stand out in the crowd.
First of all, the flavor selection they seem to have is a bit odd, and they lack many of the flavors that you'd come to expect from places like this. The other area that could be improved is the toppings department. The choices for fresh fruit were pretty limited.
This place serves its purpose though; it's pretty hard to screw up yogurt and it's also open a bit later than some of the other places around which is nice.
I have traveled far and wide for yogurt, and this is one of the best I've had. We were in SD for the weekend when we stumbled upon Forbidden Yogurt, and my hubby and I loved it so much that we were back the next day. While the 38cents/oz. is a bit higher than most stores, the 18 flavors and 50+ dry toppings from which to choose make it worth it. The store has plenty of seating and friendly service. We look forward to going back to SD just to get some more of this froyo!
I was in desperate need of a pick-me-up after a long workout, and I noticed Forbidden Yogurt's "Grand Opening" sign out front. The store is located in the Vons shopping center, next to Lorna's, and at the site of the old UC Candy store. Walking in, it's somewhat obvious that it's a very new business, as the smell of new paint and furniture permeated the air.
While I was there, a young boy presumably from the Tae-kwon-do Academy down the strip, filed his cup all the way to the brim with yogurt. He brought it to the counter, and stated, unphased, that he only had $5.00. After weighing it (30 cents an oz.), the total came to $5.21. The guy at the counter just took the five dollar bill and let him go on his merry way. The boy, who couldn't have been more than 8, ran out the door yelling that he would bring an extra quarter in next time.
Typical frozen yogurt flavors, plus Lychee, Banana, and Kiwi Strawberry. The cups come in sizes S, M, and L.
Small plain tart + strawberries + mochi = deliciousness @ $2.76 (K.I.S.S. = Keep It Simple, Stupid)
Forbidden Yogurt + Vons shopping center + empathetic environment = delicious.
The yogurt here is awesome and they have some really good flavors (pumpkin, raspberry, banana), but they don't have those frequent yogurt eater cards like all the other places in the area, so that takes a star away. Also, the guy working here is not the friendliest. And the strawberries need to be cut into smaller pieces. But it's close to our house and we will most likely be back.
Edited to Add: We went here again, and unfortunately they don't offer consistency. The first time we came must have been a fluke. The flavors all tasted the same and it's just another crappy yogurt place in the area. We'll continue driving to Yogurt Lounge, even though it's not exactly close, but they are consistently good.
Lots of flavors, but super creamy---especially the peanut butter and all the non fruity flavors
the tart is a bit too tarty or in other words, too sour
It's a cute little place, ample of sitting space and parking, many toppings. 38 cents/oz.. close to people who goes to UCSD, thus its convenient.
but.............I still like yogurt world the best. :)
As far as yogurt places go, I think this is the best so far. The fruit is freshly cut, unlike others like Yogurt World where the fruit was previously frozen and soaked in fruity syrup. So what, is costs like 4 cents more per ounce but it's so good.
I even took 2 buses to get here one time. That's right, it's so good that I am willing to take public transportation to get there.
Do not be fooled by the cheesy name of this fro-yo place...I am five starring it!
Why:
- Because parking is everywhere, versus Yogurt World in the middle of a cramped mall strip.
- Because there are soo many flavors to choose from and they are all consistent= creamy and yummy! Try their peppermint york flavor or butterfinger.
- Because their flavors change every week, you can go on their website (http://forbiddenyogurt...) and look at them before you go.
- Because the owners are super down to earth and are grateful for all the customers.
Now what are you waiting for? Go get 'em, tiger!
To me, the quality of the product is dependent on the quality of the service. Because of this, Forbidden Yogurt is probably one of the best yogurt places I've been to.
The owners are friendly and very easy to talk to, so it's not hard to like and buy what they're selling.
There is a variety of flavors and dozens of toppings to satisfy your fruit tooth or sweet tooth. Fruit toppings are very fresh. Yogurt flavors that rock : English toffee, Georgia peach, Dole pineapple, Lychee.
Cool note: the owner might start a wall for customers that load up on the most yogurt. I've gotten up to 20.4 oz in one sitting, and I will go back to top that.
finally got to try this place out tonight. i feel like jerry seinfeld in my curiosity of this store. it's like the episode with Baboo, the Pakistani restaurant owner....the doomed business location....keeps changing. In the time I've lived in the area, it's been a baskin robbins, a candy store, and now a yogurt place! at least they are keeping a theme. but I think they may have gotten it right finally...DIY yogurt.
control! power! magnitude of options! spontaneity! sugar! sugar! sugar! healthier than ice cream! (well, depending on your toppings of course).
it's a little hard to not be over stimulated and want a pull down of every single flavor. but somehow i managed only 3: vanilla bean, raspberry, and green tea (that was my 'good idea in theory' choice...stick to green tea ice cream, friends). put on some random toppings of my liking, some nice fresh chopped fruit and off for the verdict...
'bout 4 bucks. not too bad, not too bad. thought the flavor was good, def comparable to golden spoon...but....
more power!!
yep, chill place. I shall return.
Okay, so I don't eat frozen yogurt all the time, but I know what I like. I only get the tart flavor (i figure if i want the different flavors i might as well go to a traditional frozen yogurt shop, not one of the new asian style ones) and I like it super creamy. Most places I've been to, the tart flavor has been really icy. So far I've been there twice and their yogurt has been super creamy each time, just the way i like. I think this will now be my default yogurt shop of choice.
their peppermint froyo is the best, i wish they'd get it back tho! they replaced it with york patty, but people can just mix chocolate and peppermint together. i miss my favorite flavor!!!
eating dinner next door at lorna's, i couldn't help but notice superstoked folks coming out of what i have dubbed froyo nirvana.
after i finally decided on 3 flavors (belgian chocolate, pistachio, & peanut butter), i was greeted by bins upon bins of the most awesome toppings ever! my cup full o' love (only 39 cents an ounce) cost a mere $2.99!
ty, one of the owners, is rad. this place has been open 2 weeks and is the bomb diggity! oh, and if you have a hard time making up your mind (me), samples are available.
I'm so stoked that there is a new self serve frozen yogurt place in the UTC area. There were plenty of flavors and even more toppings to choose from. I tried the butterfinger, york peppermint patty, peanut butter, banana, and café latte and it was really good! The place has ample parking and free wifii. At 38 cents an ounce, I will be back when I feel like trying the tart and fruity flavors.
Typical yogurt place. I like how it's self serve and I like how they have free wifi and a very friendly staff. They had some cool flavors like pumpkin pie. This place was good, but there's so many yogurt places popping out now that this place is just another one of them.
I went to try this place last Friday. I was super excited to hear of a yogurt place opening in a plaza with much better parking than some of my favorite yogurt places, and also one closer to home.
I was happy with the amount of topping and flavors. There are about as many topping as Yogurt World, including all my favorite such as fruit and jellies. They also have a wide selection of flavors with some I have never tried before like Lychee. The store rotates flavors so they are constantly changing, which is pretty cool.
The one criticism of the store I had is that despite all the different flavors, taro was not one of them. Taro is my favorite flavor and a staple at almost all the other yogurt places that Forbidden is trying to compete with. My one suggestion for the owner would be perhaps to find out a couple of the most popular flavors offered at various yogurt places and keep those flavors around, and then rotate some of the other flavors. Or else, for people like me, I still had to go to yogurt world after to satisfy my craving for taro.
Forbidden Yogurt gets three stars for decent yogurt, some neat flavors (I had rootbeer float, for crying out loud!), and some good toppings I haven't seen elsewhere (Reeces cereal anyone? I love the stuff...) The yogurt here isn't for people who like tart yogurt (as in people who prefer their froyo not taste a bit like ice cream). My husband agreed with the reviewer who said the tart original was WAY too sweet. He also noted that the strawberries here aren't cut up hardly at all (they were huge, basically just halved) so that makes it hard to eat them in the frozen yogurt. I liked mine, though! I had a weird combo of rootbeer float, Heath bar & Reeces cereal. I think I'd probably mix different things in the future, but for what I mixed it was still quite decent. The three stars are also because of the price... It's kinda spendy for frozen yogurt, even though I got a small cup with far less than I normally get at places like this it was still over $9 for my husband and I to get yogurt (granted he got a lot, but still!) Maybe I'll return someday if I'm in the UTC and want froyo, but I'll stick to my regular haunts otherwise.
This is such a find. I have tried many other frozen yogurt places and this is by far my favorite. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had pomegranate AND lychee flavors!! Of course, they get 5 stars just for that, since what other fro-yo places offers my favorite fruits as flavor options?! The guy who works here is friendly and really good with kids - if they don't have enough for their ice cream, he'll tell me to be sure to bring the correct amount next time. (He then took the difference from the tip jar, which I was nice enough to replenish!) This place is also close to my apartment.
The owners are a fantastic young couple and the yogurt is great. I am a simple girl who prefers vanilla/chocolate swirl but my husband is very excited to try the many different flavors and huge variety of toppings (even freshly cut fruit). The only warning I would give is be careful you don't get a brain freeze :o) This place is excellent!
I finally got a chance to come back. Still no taro but an improved quality in toppings. The selection of flavors is impressive in name but not in taste. Unpardonably expensive at 38 cents/oz when there are other places (e.g., Tutti Frutti) which are cheaper at 5 cents/oz and provide a frequent buyer's card.
