Review from Connie L.

Not that I need to write an update, but I wanted to. Was a little bothered by the fact that FOLT didn't have all five stars. (:
I emailed Anita (I think she's the owner, although I'm not entirely sure) about my Dachshund mix's "pudding poops". Ever since we switched S' kibble to grain free, he's been having these poops that are just a joy to deal with. My sister and I are co-owners, and she finally gave up, saying that I should just feed S the kibble and ignore it, but I was determined. It's not exactly fun to have poop that has the close consistency of diarrhea every day of your life. We had also changed S from Orijen to First Mate (which are both grain free and theoretically should not be causing these issues), and then he was on a whole bunch of supplements ... long story short, I'm not made of money!
Anita (or the very nice lady that helped me today) went over the virtues of The Honest Kitchen after I had asked about it, and gave me some samples to take home and tinker with. She was extremely generous! She was also very knowledgeable about the various digestive ills that might be causing the wiener dog's issues.
I mixed a generous tablespoon of Embark with 1/8 cup of kibble, and after an apprehensive sniff, S proceeded to lick the bowl clean without chewing his kibble! He ran upstairs to take his usual post-meal nap, but I tapped another 1/4 tablespoon of Embark into his bowl and he came running down! He's never done that!
If THK doesn't work, (and I PRAY that it does), I'll still be extremely thankful to have this store as a resource.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I LOVE this place. I only buy my dog food from here, because of the selection and service. They know the products extremely well and offer a return/exchange if something isn't working out. Prices are competitive & they have a frequent purchaser program.
I enjoy conversing with the workers and how quickly you can get in and out of the store. Plus they allow my dog to peruse. And, they give her yummy treats.
The low light is they have limited hours. If you work late then its best to go on Saturday. -

I love that the people here actually care about how our cats are doing on the food that we buy here! That's music to a mom's ears!
Kitty and bunny adoption fairs are held here regularly! Maybe this is where you'll meet the furry love of your life! Check their website to make sure you don't miss these events. I recommend them!
Our babies have been on their raw (with a bit of canned) diet for over a month now, and they are doing great! We've accepted that they won't accept 100% raw and will continue to combine it with some canned, but we don't give them any grains whatsoever. The change has been remarkable! Their personalities are more loving, much pushier, more bold, more energetic, playful, and affectionate. Believe me, if you knew our cats before, you might not have thought there was any room for improvement -- already the most purr-ocious cats on the planet -- but yes, they're even more of what they already were. Purr-fection! Even our feisty, temperamental girl is much more approachable and more pettable now!
I had always thought that serving raw would be too gross for me, but it's no big deal at all. Rad Cat comes pre-mixed with whatever it needs to be a complete nutritious meal.Listed in: Best Service, My 'Hood, Best Place to Shop, For Pet Parents

Kathy your the best! My wife and I just got a maltipoo so we don't know much about dogs. Kathy was kind enough to take 30 min and explain exactly what type of food would be healthy for our puppy. So I ended up buying a sample pack of raw and a small pack of orijen! My dog loves them both! I will be coming back to buy a big bag this time! Thank you Kathy!!!!!!

If you're looking for quality foods and products at reasonable prices, this is your pet store.
I recently changed my cats' diet to a grain free one and looking online and at large chain stores, I found the price of food would be as much or higher than the prescription food I was getting before! I discovered For Other Living Things carried both EVO 95% and Orijen so I stopped by to check it out.
As soon as you walk in the door you immediately feel welcome and at ease. The staff is both knowledgeable and very helpful. The store isn't laid out like a large retail store which makes it feel more inviting. My first visit I ended up staying 30 minutes even though all I wanted to do was check prices.
The great store, staff and selection does NOT come at a premium price. I spot checked food, toys and accessories prices, they usually matched or beat the large retailers and online wholesalers. Sure some basic things were tad more expensive, but those items weren't budget brands: F.O.L.T.'s "budget" items are on par with or better quality than large retailer's mid-tier.
Also, they have adoption fairs in this nice little area of the store with a couch and a old wood stove. They have a calendar on their website with the schedule too. So you can plan ahead if you're thinking about getting a new pet.
As I hope to continue to frequent this exquisite pet store, please do so as well. This is my favorite pet store so hopefully it can be yours too! -

I have patronized this store since the day that it opened. It is obvious that Anita and her daughter Kelly truly love "other living things" and thoughtfully stock their store to only offer the healthiest and the safest products on the market for your pet, whatever it might be.
When I lived in Sunnyvale, it was my source for everything for my 2 dogs. Even living away for 4 years, I still return to pick up toys and treats for my furry boys when I am in town, and am greeted like an old friend.Listed in: 30-Day Yelp Challenge, Bay Area Blitz

Wow you truly don't find this kind of service anymore! I give them 5 stars for customer service alone. This is a family run business and I've received really great help and advice from both the mom and daughter. The daughter told me opening up a pet store has always been a dream for her moms and it shows! I was looking for a product that they didn't carry and the owner called around and had it shipped to the store for free. She was just so helpful and nice. I live kind of out of the way but I will definitely try to make the trip out to support this local business.

I only wish I would have discovered FOLT a little sooner. The selection is fantastic here, and the only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because sometimes the customer service isn't that great for a smaller pet store.
Since discovered this store, we go here for most of our dogs' needs. They have a nice selection of food, treats, and rawhides/bully sticks, though not a great selection of harnesses, clothes, etc.
FOLT also has a pretty good loyalty program for frequent shoppers. I think it is $5 back for every $100 spent, and a free bag of food after 12 bags purchased. -
Review from Cindy F.
I popped in for some Evo canned dog food the breeder said I "had" to get for my new chi baby, and found it here for the same price as online. I didn't get a chance to browse in detail, but they do offer ultra premium dog/cat food. They also offer a nice selection of natural chews and even organic toys for your dog! They don't have as much selection for basic needs, but I like this place more for their ultra premium foods and specialty items I was able to find here.
The owner is a wealth of information, and they do have a loyalty program. I will definitely return to learn more about their ultra premium dog/cat foods! They also offer Sirius puppy training classes, which is a very well known positive reinforcement program by Dr. Ian Dunbar. -

This is a great local pet store. They have a wide selection of cat and dog food/treats. We originally came in looking for a raw diet for one of our cats. The woman that helped us (I forgot her name now) was so great. She seemed very happy that we were interested in switching our cat to raw and helped us get samplers of a few brands along with a few free sample packs of dehydrated foods. The cat likes Rad Cat in particular, so I've been back 3 or 4 times now to get more food. They have pretty good prices on our other cat's canned food (Natural Balance) and hay for our chinchillas.
Customer service has been great each time. I've seen most of them more than once and they always ask if I need help finding anything in particular. They also have a frequent buyer program for some foods.
The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that it doesn't carry 100% of what I need. I still have to go to Petsmart for Mazuri chinchilla pellets. The selection of chew toys that would be safe for chinnies is fairly small, too. Not a lot of variety, but what they do have is great quality. -

FOLT is my kind of pet store! I'm all about supporting local businesses. I would highly recommend this place especially if you have a little bunny friend!
This was the location where I scheduled an appointment with http://therabbithaven.org and met my sassy dwarf lionhead bun. With the assistance of the Haven Staff, I got all my essentials at FOLT including:
- Treats and Cushions for the Carrier and Cage
- Transportation Carrier
- Oxbow Orchard Grass Hay
- Oxbow Adult Rabbit Pellets
- Critter Country Litter
- Litter box
This place has all the goodies that my bunny will ever need! I will continue to come to FOLT since they are the only place I know that sells Oxbow Hay in 9LB bulk.
Quick Tip: If you come in the first Saturday of each month, there will be a bunny adoption showcase provided by The Rabbit Haven. Their staff will also provide free nail trims for your bunny too! -

For Other Living Things is hands down the best pet shop I have ever been to. Their entire staff is knowledgeable about a wide variety of pets (they even know TONS about bunnies, which is hard to find!). They always have the freshest, best food for your animals and really know what it takes to make a great impression on both their human and fuzzier customers! They also have the Rabbit Haven into their store on the first Saturday of every month, which is great since it gets buns adopted who might otherwise never find a home.
Definitely a 5 star experience every time I visit here, which is quite often! -

Impressive for their high quality, lower-priced, bird-safe parrot foods, toys, and accessories. Staff are well-informed, helpful, and genuine. Very clean, bright, and addresses the needs of many kinds of pets. Much better than chain pet shops. After decades of living with parrots, I don't say these things lightly.

OMG, if you have a rabbit and you live in the south bay, I would highly recommend shopping here. I love this place. The hours are not the best (I think they are closed on Sundays and typically close very early), but their selection of rabbit stuff is great. They have a lot of stuff, which you can check out on their website. They can even special order it for you and let you know when it comes in. Their staff is very knowledgeable. I asked about a particular item, and they were able to tell me immediately about the status of when the item was to come in.
I was able to find the best quality items here, and I come back at least once every 2 weeks to buy stuff (like grass mats, woven baskets, fresh papaya and the maze haven). They even have a newsletter and loyalty program, where you get money off after a certain number of purchases (I can't remember how much you have to spend).
If you are interested, they also host a rabbit rescue on the first Sunday of every month. You can adopt a bunny and buy all the things that you need from here. The exercise pens and cages are a little expensive for my taste, but some of the other supplies like feed and litter are reasonable. -

All things that go Bark, Purr or snort you can find something for all and everything in between.
I always stop in for treat for my lab he likes the pig ears! but they also have all kinds of things for birds, cats, rats, and Noah's!
Now the prices that's another story but I don't mind spending my money with family owned business. Dislike Wally mart or Tar jay.
I say when in need for a chew bone check them out! -
Review from Ken K.
For Other Living Things is a mom and pop type pet supply store that not only caters toward customers who have the usual cat and dog but literally for those "other living things", such as those cute lil furry creatures like guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters and uhm...gerbils that Richard Gere would love to get his hands on. (btw I looked it up, apparently it's still an urban myth that Ricky did some gerbiling at one point and needed surgery to get it outta his arse, although ironically Gere and Ger(bil)e are not THAT far apart).
FOLT rests in a strip mall, and once you enter you are greeted by the knowledgeable staff who not only know their products but can also help you with questions or finding that pet toy or feed that is appropriate for your pet.
FOLT staff appear to be pet owners and animal lovers themselves, as most of the products they stock, while may be a little bit more expensive on first glance, are overall much better for your pet than say if you got something equivalent from the bigger name stores like Petsmart or Petco.
For example, did you know that the wrong kind of feed or hay for a guinea pig is bad for the lil' furry one? Something about too much calcium or phosphorous which could lead to health problems. Getting a generic kind or mass produced variety from the big name stores will likely cause those problems for your pet, whereas if you select carefully and get the right feed, you can ensure a healthy, happy furry one (oh dear Ricky might be excited reading this right now I better stop!)
Guinea pig owners and fans might know of the great site cavyspirit dot com and also the spinoff cavycages dot com. They emphasize not to use store bought cages for guinea pigs, but instead custom design one that is not only safe, but spacious and comfortable. After all, how would you feel if you were holed up like a prisoner in a 3x3 cel (then again some do that on a daily basis, and it's called a high tech slavery cubicle....ok I take that back). Interesting enough, FOLT is listed as a place where you can purchase the raw materials (cubes/coroplast) to build that guinea pig (or small rabbit) cage. It's more expensive that if you get coroplast from a sign shop or cubes you can get from costco or office depot, but it's a one stop convenient shop.
Top notch customer service, plus a market niche for those who want nothing but the best for their pets (unlike Ricky G).
A quick tip, Pet Club does have the better prices on Care Fresh bedding, though cash/ATM cards only. Go to FOLT for gadgets/toys for the little guys, feed and other things. Your pet will love you long time! (No jokes please). -
Review from Anna L.
Yeay! A Mom and Pop shop for my animals. I happened by this place in December and found some cute items for my bunny to chew on.
I won't go into the boring details, but I happened to find out that an organization called the Rabbit Haven comes by every 1st Saturday of the month, showing adoptable rabbits, and offers free nail trims and rabbit care tips. My poor bunny had the longest elvira nails, and he finally got them trimmed by a wonderful group of volunteers who also taught me how to hold him.
*He still doesn't trust me since then, but at least his nails are better! -

This is the BEST place to find whatever you need for just about any kind of pet you have. Period.
You can feel good about shopping here for a number of reasons:
1) The friendly and helpful staff are also incredibly knowledgeable. Anita, Kelly and Dennis really know their stuff, and can quickly and efficiently help you find what you need.
2) The products they sell are top notch: a very wide selection of retail items, and a broad array of high-quality and healthy food and snacks for all types of pets.
3) As much as possible, they try to stock "Earth-Friendly" items, that are good for you, your pet and the environment.
I really could go on and on, but to put it simply, they are a refreshing alternative to huge chain pet supply stores that sell animals, junk food, and employ people that know next to nothing about pets.
I love For Other Living Things! -

This is exactly the kind of small business that deserves your money. They host and are involved with all kinds of local animal rescue groups and shelters. They have good prices on great products, and I know they put a lot of thought and research into sourcing -- looking out for health and environmental issues. They're very friendly and helpful in the store.
Also, this might sound weird, but if you love animals, you should "like" them on Facebook. They post a lot of interesting/cool stuff, not just marketing b.s.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Anita and her staff are fantastic! Most pet stores have a very poor selection of items for animals that aren't dogs or cats. Having three house rabbits limited me to shopping online to get the products I wanted until I discovered FOLT. They sell all the good stuff for rabbits, rats, ferrets and other pets! I can buy the higher quality food and pellets most places don't carry - plus lots of healthier treats and good toys too. The prices are reasonable and sometimes less than the big chains. It's great since they sell all the OXBOW line and stock things like critter castles.
Another reason to support FOLT is because they do not sell animals and strongly support pet rescue! They host adoption shows for a variety of local rescue groups, which gives them a big bonus in my book! They host a lot of adoption events - including Rabbit Haven, Rattie Rats and Mickaboo, plus it seems like there are often kitties there too looking for a good home.
Editing to add - I don't know too much the kind of toys dogs like, but needed to send a gift. Anita spent 10 minutes talking with me and making recommendations on what's popular with the pooch set. That's great customer service in my book.Listed in: Be A Good Bunny Slave!

For Other Living Things is a cute little gem, quietly existing among all the giant corporate pet stores that surround the bay area. I love to support independent businesses and FOLT makes it easy because they are FANTASTIC. Although FOLT is a bit more out of my way, it is my new favorite pet store!
They have excellent customer service. Anita takes the time to inform you about their various products. She helped me make adjustments to a harness that I was purchasing for my dog. She provided me with suggestions for my dog's anxiety. They immediately place orders for you (if something is out of stock or if you need to special order something). They offered to help carry items to your car... and even though I declined, it was the thought that counted! Most importantly, they greet your dog and make your dog feel welcomed. =)
They focus on holistic, natural and/or organic product lines.
They also sell replacement squeakers, which is way cool because those are so freaking rare to find! And they are affordable... which is a huge plus in my book. Yay!
COOL COOL COOL is their Frequent Buyer Program: If you purchase from the Natura Pet product lines, your 13th bag of food is free. If you purchase from the Natural Balance product lines, your 11th bag of food is free. (Or something like that... they also have the frequent buyer program with other product lines but I can't recall what they are.) This is so incredibly helpful and cool!
Someone's review mentioned that they only take ATM/Debit and cash... Please note that this is incorrect, as I use my credit card here all the time.
A really fun place to browse and spend your money at... so be careful! Please go and support your local business! =) -

Mega barks and howls. My pup and I love this store!
It's not super close to our house so we don't get over there that often but when we do, it's fun times all around. My Mom also frequents this shop for their dog supplies and more treats for my little fuzzy child. They sell a lot of organic and healthy treats for dogs, specifically homemade style items that you would never find in a big store. But the really cool thing is that it's not just a dog store. It's a shop for all types of animals, which is way more fun to wander around in than just a dog and cat store. However, I try to keep my focus on the things that are actually revelant to our pet..or else I could be hanging around in there for way too long.
The staff is super helpful and they always seem to have a plethora of inventory on whatever I am looking for. Pricewise, they are a little bit more affordable than some of the other shops around, but not priced as low as some others. So I guess they are kind of smack dab in the middle of affordable...assuming you consider purchasing organic gluten free treats for your pup affordable. I obviously do considering how often I find myself in shops like this, to my pup's delight and husband's chagrin.
The shop is a little hidden in an old style wood plaza in Sunnyvale, but parking is plentiful and the shop is never crowded. If you've got an animal love in your life who needs a little organic spoilin'...check it out.Listed in: Going to the Dogs!

Five stars: A star in the pet supply world, FOLT is a great place to get food, toys, and environments for your pets. Anita, the owner, knows her stuff and is happy to tell you why she doesn't carry any particular brand of food you're looking for, and is just as helpful coming up with innovative solutions to strange pet issues (she helped me come up with the perfect caging solution for my handicapped parrot). The rest of the staff is friendly and helpful too - and the section for bird supplies/toys can't be beat!
And if I could add a sixth star, I would - because FOLT is a certified Green Business: http://www.greenbiz.ca... -

This place gets kudos for their dedication to healthy and happy pet care. It's a local business with good, enthusiastic management and employees, I was looking for a particular cat flea medicine, and the fellow was helpful enough to come over and look through all the products with me, wasn't a pushy salesperson at all, just trying to assist me. Looking around, I was amazed at the variety of holistic, natural and just very healthy food products they had for dogs and cats (i'm not a bird man), but yes it is expensive, I remember that too.
But this is a quality place, trying to do the right thing for animals, hats off to them~ -

This place was recommended by a Petsmart employee after I told her that I could not find one item for my allergic pet at Petsmart. I am so happy with her recommendation. "Living Things" has several choices of duck treats with no fillers or additives. My dog loves his treats from "For Other Living Things". I visit every other week to stock up.
The store is small, but the food that sell is of an excellent quality.
Another pro is a knowledgable staff. They have been very helpful answering questions about the products. -

Still a fan and boy is this place treating me like one! They recently started a customer rewards program, so that for every $100 you spend you get a $5 credit to spend at the store.

THIS is where the pets go, people. If you're not thrilled with the big chain stores, try this "mom & pop" where they really know their products and their animals. You won't find measly little cages that are totally inappropriate, or pet "snacks" that are loaded with junk. Also, they refuse to sell live animals, which is a must for me. Instead, they host adoption fairs for local rescues.
PS They really know birds. And they don't ignore the rabbits and rodents, either. They have tons of rabbit toys. Chew all you want, I'll buy more. -

I love this place, but since it's quite expensive, I have to remove a star :) They have a great variety of dog foods, and everything they stock in the store is of excellent quality. The staff is all well versed and can answer most questions asked of them. They also greet the animals when they come in.
The store offers supplies for many different types of pets, including dogs, cats, birds, rodents, and reptiles. I recommend it to other people, but I would look elsewhere if you prefer more economical prices. -

Extremely nice, helpful staff; they helped me stock up on everything the first day I had my puppy, and gave me lots of helpful tips as well.
The quality of their dog food is top-notch, a bit more expensive, but what with the recalls, who cares if its $2 more. *Update: I checked online, the Innova Evo dog food I buy here is the same price on the discount websites--yippee :)
Not the biggest selection of harnesses, leashes, collars (I ended up getting mine at another store), but good toys, I got a nice crate for $40, and a very yummy-looking selection of treats (dried chicken wrapped apples? lamb sausage? sign me up!)
Overall, an excellent store, but it is small so don't expect to find absolutely everything you need there. -

I used to go there once every month to get a bag of food for my bird that Pet Club doesn't sell.
The store is way out of my way, but since they were the only place I knew that sold it - I would make the special trip. Although I would prefer to be treated with a modicum of respect and not as an irritant, I sucked it up because they had the food the bird needed.
I've never found the staff to be pleasant on any occasion, and many times felt like I was literally bothering them. Except once when I asked for a particular book I was looking for, and the lady insisted the book they had on the shelf was better - (and $20 more than the one I wanted) she was really pushy trying to get me to buy it, even after I told her I'm not interested in that book, I want the one I want.
Then I found Andy's Pet Store in San Jose. They carry the same food, for the same price, and the folks there have yet to make me feel like I bother them when handing over my hard earned money. They usually initiate any conversation about my bird - but are not pushy with the upselling either.
An added bonus now that Andy's has moved to Notre Dame Ave. is that they are CLOSER to me then when they were on the Alameda.
so long "for all living things". I won't be back. -

I feed my cats a food not sold many places -- sold here (although I do call first, sometimes they have to order!). Always friendly, and they hooked me up with a card from the manufacturer (buy 10 get one free) and keep the info in the store (I'm way against wallet clutter!).
Thanks!
Recently bunny sat for a friend (note: bunny and cats --- um, NOT together - doh!). The selection at FOLT of bunny paraphernalia is over the top and priced better than the larger stores, of course the staff was wonderful with recommendations and advice! -
Review from Jan P.
High quality pet food store with great customer service... This place is my only source for our pet rat's special lab feed. It is extremely high quality and recommended by rat lovers alike. With this feed, our rat is now a venerable two years old!! It is family owned, and everyone is very knowledgeable about a wide range of pets. I like that there is a bird homed here, as he is very cute.
I notice that this store also has a lot of events, from training to seminars to in-house adoptions. Definitely a plus, as it shows that they care. Or maybe because I get to pet really cute animals while I get Gus some more food. Teehee.
Other than specializing in small animals, they also carry Innova which is the only thing I will feed our dog. However, I choose to purchase it at AnJan's which is closer to our home.
& One time they let me get a few biscuits for free for our dog, yay!
Note that they are closed on Sundays, allow pets to enter on leashes, and take ATM/debit or cash only.
Also, they have a frequent customer club so if you visit often, make sure you inquire about it--which I don't think you will need to do as they make sure to ask. :)
They are located in a strip mall anchored by a Starbuck's, so look for that! -

Really, theres nothing to dislike about this place! I swear they are the Trader Joes of pet supplies! I visited today with my bf to get another harness for our joint custody pup and we found one that his dad hopefully can figure out and won't just cut, especially because the harness was 25.00! Anyway, I asked about some ear wipes I saw on the online catalog and she (sadly I've been here many many times now, and I can't remember her name) went to the back to get them out of a box for me...since they had just arrived. Everyone there is always so kind and helpful.
They also have a points program now! They get your info and you just tell them your name when you make purchases! woohoo!Listed in: Dog Friendly Places and…, My Neighborhood
